What's wrong with my iPad - out of the box?

I happily received my new iPad. But unlike what I'm supposed to see on my start-up screen, I only get a picture of a USB cord pointed at an iTunes icon. It only stays on a few seconds before the screen goes blank. Additionally, although I have it charging, via its charger, into a regular outlet, the battery doesn't seem to be charging. (When I have it plugged in, there's a "socket" icon inside the battery icon, but when it's not plugged in - and I had it plugged in overnight - the battery had only white space inside it. I am a longtime Mac user, but this is frustrating. What can / should I do?

That definitely doesn't sound correct. Try plugging it in to your Mac and see if it will recognize it. Try holding down the sleep button to make it actually turn off. Then power it back on again. You will get an Apple logo during a power on. If you don't get that, it may be dead.

All of that sounds like normal behavior. That "socket" is the charging indicator. The white space is the battery full indicator.

  • Apple wants to charge for a repair but won't tell me what's wrong with my iPad

So my iPad mini is 1 year and 5 days old, and it suddenly won't power on.  Nothing, even with a different charger and cable.  The Apple website said to send in for battery/power issues, so I filled in the form and gave them my credit card for a little over $100.00 and sent it to them via UPS.  That was 2 days ago, now I get an email saying they need to charge me $225.95+tax and I have 48 hours to either pay it or have them send the unit back.  Nothing on their repair status tells me what is wrong and why the sudden increase in price for an iPad mini repair.  I can call or chat online for another $19.00, but that seems like hiway robbery to me.  I mean, I already paid you $100+, can't you even tell me what you found that needs another $225?!?!?  On the repair status, there is an area called views of your product with a broken image file, so I can't even see what they are referring to.
If I way the $19, will they even be able to tell me anything, or will they just read what I can see on the webpage?  I'm starting to think it will be cheaper to just buy another iPad mini at this rate.
    Has anyone any advice ?

Well, I called Apple and talked to them last night.  They were surprisingly very friendly.  They emailed me a picture of the iPad with what they were concerned about.  Now there is a dent in a corner, that I know wasn't there before.  I take create care of the iPad and use a full bumper case.  I explained to the repair tech that this dent is new and was not there when I took the iPad in for UPS.  Actually, when I took the iPad to UPS, I had the unit in the original box (I'm OCD that way).  The guy at UPS told me to take the iPad out of the box and then he weighed the iPad, some bubble wrap and an empty box.  He then said it was good to go and I walked away with the original packaging.  I honestly suspect the damage happened at UPS.  Plus a small dent in a corner shouldn't affect battery, right?  Anyway, after talking with a few people at repair, they noticed that their records show the iPad being 1 day out of AppleCare.
The last guy was going to just charge me for the battery replacement, which I am good with.  But, guess what, Apple can't partial charge, it's either all or nothing.  So, after about an hour of being on the phone, they will repair or replace the iPad at no charge to me (just this once, only).
I have to admit, that calling and talking with these guys was very helpful.  Everyone was friendly and cheering.  Plus I wasn't calling India (no offence to India).  I am definitely going to continue purchasing Apple products if this how their support works.  If only Cisco could learn to work that way...

Delete the music in your iTunes library, then go to iTunes store, Quick Link, 'Purchased' to redownload again.

  • My 2nd mini iPad in a year and same problem happened,it stopped working. what's wrong with mini iPads?!

I got a replacement to my daughter’s iPad mini in September b/c her 1st one stopped working and now it happened again. I took it to the Apple store and  i was told that there's  nothing they can do. What's wrong with the iPad minis?

I have an iPad mini and it works great, so do many other people.
Is it possible your daughter abused the device?   If it gets dropped, even in a damage proof case, it is a shock to the iPad.   Most survive, but if it happens often, it might be a problem.
Charging often, not completely, leaving in charger while in use a lot?
Leaving the iPad in a hot car, or freezing the iPad?

  • What's wrong with my iPad?

I have an iPad first generation which is stuck on the apple logo and a black screen while its on the charger, other than that I can't turn it on and iTunes does not recognize the device so I can't force recovery.. HELP?!

If its only 5 days old, I wouldn't even try to troubleshoot the problem. Return it for a refund (you are within the 14 days allowed by Apple) and get another one. I sure wouldn't want a device that wasn't working properly after only 5 days out of the box.

You need to upgrade to 10.10.3 - it's on software update.
That will give you the new Photos.app.
It will also be possible to download the up-to-date version of iPhoto:
Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I was using the app "Aralon Swords and Shadows" the other day when it unexpectedly closed out of the app. I decided to put my iPad to sleep. When I tried to wake it up again, nothing happened. No buttons work and my iPad can only be used as a large paperweight. What happened?

  • Damaged iPad out of the box can't be exchanged. Help!

    Hi guys,
Since the new iPad is not officially available in Serbia yet (and yet the new Retina Macbook pro is available) I bought it in Bulgaria. It is a Black 64gb 4g model. However when I brought it home and unpacked the box the upper half of the back of the iPad looked as if it had been sandpapered, it really looked bad. Morever the rubber between the glass and the bezel wasn't aligned properly, it just looked very bad! Trust me I am not nitpicking. The problem is that unlike most people who live in USA, UK, Germany etc. I can't go back to the store and have it exchanged, I can't even call Apple with my telephone because there is no Apple support in my country. I don't feel happy that I have given so much money for a device that looks worse than a used one, especially when I've been struggling to afford it. I am a language professor and I've been planning to use it in my lectures for keynote presentations, as a lesson planner etc.
    All the best,
    Vlasta

It may or may not have anything to do with Apple. The package could have been opened at the store (or anywhere) before it was sold.

  • TS1702 What's wrong with my ipad if the apps are not downloading

I am trying to download some apps but all it says is "waiting" and I have been "waiting" for about an hour.  I do not have any (other) apps downloading except for the ones I am having problems with. Please help whenever possible.

I have posted these suggestions many times and some of them have worked for other users in the past. Give them a try - in the order that they are typed below. Maybe something will work for you.
    1. Tap the "waiting" icon and see if you can pause it. If it does pause, then tap it again and see if it will resume. If that works, repeat the same steps for each "waiting" icon.
    2. Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    3. Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
    4. If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
    5. You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.
    6. You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered.
    7. If all else fails, download the updates or the apps in iTunes on your computer and then sync the content to your iPad.

  • What's wrong with my ipad (mini) ?

last month i got a brand new ipad mini 32 gigs wifi+lte. this thing has ios 6.1.3 installed on it and it running on a 3g network from vodafone which also powers 3g on my iphone 5. it all works fine except for a few very strange issues outlines below...
pages, numbers and keynotes are not syncing icloud documents. the documents appear fine on the iphone and the mac (which has paid version of iworks suite from the app store). i have toggled icloud sync and documents sync under cellular to ON-OFF several times.
mail would not show my flagged emails except ones flagged on the ipad. this used to be the case when i was using ipad 2 as well.
reminders dont sync promptly. i have to wait to open the app to see them sync. in the iphone and on the mac they sync just fine.
the ipad seems to reset APN settings automatically! many ipad users in india who use vodafone 3g complain about the same thing.
as u can the problems i outlines are mostly to do with icloud sync. can someone tell me how to fix this. i would appreciate if there is a way out of "starting the ipad as new" cause there is a significant game data i would loose.

  • What is wrong with my iPad (4th Gen) screen?

    Hi all,
My iPad 4th gen screen has stopped working.
It just shows a white fuzzy screen with a thick grey bar across the screen. I have done some percussive therapy (hitting the back) and the thick bar changed colour but other than that nothing happens. I have tried a restore as well but still no luck!
I have trawled through google and some of the ofrums here but i cant find anything about this. Does anyone have any ideas? It has just ran out of warranty as well.
    Zack

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

  • What is wrong with my iPad? White screen

I opened my iPad this morning and there was a white screen. I could do nothing. Couldn't turn it off, couldn't do anything with buttons except the hard reset.
After about 5 minutes, it went back to normal.  Now tonight, it has returned, and this time it isn't going away. Additionally, the white screen is getting less bright, and all edges of the screen are starting to darken, as if its dying.  I have a genius bar appointment tomorrow but just wanted to get some idea of what I'm in for, if anyone has experienced this. I've included a picture.

Yes, thats what I meant by hard reset. I did do that. It came back on with the white screen. I can barely see apps in the background, but when i press the screen nothing happens. I'm trying a system restore now, but i don't think thats it, as the reset logo and progress bar is lightly visible under the bright white screen. I guess this is a screen issue. I couldn't seem to find alot on any similar problems with a google search. Weird.
