What's wrong with my Mac's disk drive?

I have a Macbook running OS X Mountain Lion (10.7.5). It has multiple users on it because I share it with other family members. A member of our family is getting a new computer and is giving me and those who share the computer with me, the old one. The Mac I use right now has a 500 GB hard drive. However, the Mac I'm getting is a Macbook Pro with only 200 GB of storage. When I went to see how much space is used up, I saw this:
Also, I can delete other profiles if that causes a problem and make one master profile for everyone. And lastly, it seems that whatever I delete goes into either the "other" tab or "backups" tab. I don't know what these consist of. Thanks for all your help!

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the available space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • What is wrong with my mac

    Hey
I purchased a crucial 256 m4 ssd. it was not working stable at all on my mbp mid 09 15'' 2,53. lags, freeze, read and write speed around 37 mb/s. Crucial said i should try in an other mac and I did a 13'' mbp from mid 10. same specs as mine mbp. It is working awesome there.
The question is that is wrong with my mac?
cause obviously there is something wrong, everything is and were up to date. including EFI, trim, sms, pram.
should i file a claim, (pruchased the mac last year and have 10 months left to do so accroding to the EU law)

  • What is WRONG with my MAC G5?

    Hi all,
I've posted several times in various forums about a number of problems I've been having that remain unresolved, and would like to appeal once more for help. I have a 6 year old 2GHz PowerPC G5 (2004) with 4GB of RAM, running FCS 6.0.6 and OS 10.5.8. I must reiterate that, despite the computer's age, it was working just fine until a kernel panic in December that has since left the computer feeling sluggish. I've performed a clean install (twice) of both the OS and FCS. I've bought new RAM and reseated in every possible way. I bought a new external harddrive (used to store my media) in case that was the culprit. I even took the computer and display into an Apple Store where they tested it for 2 days finding "nothing wrong with it". Yet even they couldn't get the "High" quality setting back in FCP. It defaults to medium now (unlike before) - which is my biggest concern. The computer's internal drive has 30% free space. The external more than 15%. And naturally, I've repaired permissions and trashed pref files, etc., with no results. Oh! And I've run the Hardware Diagnostics disk, three times, and everything keeps passing. I also just cloned the internal Maxtor drive onto an external Lacie drive and booted up from that - with no obvious improvement. Trying to eliminate the hard drive as a factor.
One more symptom -- perhaps related, perhaps not -- is that I can no longer put the computer to sleep without it crashing, followed by jet engine fans coming on. This happens every single time. Unfortunately it wasn't happening (as frequently) when I took the computer to the Apple geniuses.
And last week, when I turned the computer on, the screen remained black. The LED flashed in what I think was a series of three fast flashes. I rebooted and everything has been fine since (with the display).
I think I've found some suspicious items in the console logs. But I don't have a clue how to accurately read them or fix the problem. Can someone please help me?
The windowserver_last.log is full of the following:
May 21 10:57:47 52 kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXGetWindowWorkspace: invalid window id: a2
May 21 10:58:33 52 kCGErrorFailure: CGXDisableUpdate: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Final Cut Pro" for over 1 second. Server has re-enabled them.

May 21 11:03:52 52 kCGErrorFailure: CGXDisableUpdate: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Final Cut Pro" for over 1 second. Server has re-enabled them.
Then there's these ones that keep popping up in the console or system logs:
24/05/10 1:47:43 PM /Applications/Final Cut Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/Final Cut Pro115 _RemoveTimeTask(), the current time manager task 0x416c943c being removed is also currently executing its tmAddr routine, so unexpected things may result ( Radar #4555679 ).

These ones are less frequent, but still showing up:

If I had the money, of course I'd buy another computer. But I don't. And deep inside, I still believe there's a fix. Am I right or wrong???
    Chris
    P.S.
I don't have a clue how to read Power Fractal (suggested to someone else in another post), but here's my score:
    Elapsed time: 1.6 seconds
    Achieving 6261.1 Megaflops
    Color Speed: 10
    Maximum Count: 4096
One more thing I gleaned from another post are similar istat readings that seemed unusual to that person. Backside fans: 51rpm. ???

First thing I would do is make your post clear(-er) (I find it easier to break things down into one item per paragraph or into lists); and what HARDWARE tests and steps you have tried - that we tend to repeat over and over with system failures.
I've posted several times in various forums about a number of problems I've been having that remain unresolved,

There are FAQs on kernel panics which:

C/ panics are hardware almost always, RAM, controllers, sometimes drivers, even corrupt NVRAM

NOTE: Power Mac G5 Thermal Calibration Service It is vital for all Power Mac G5 to run thermal calibration after fitting a new logic board or processors, without it, Temperature Control will not be able to detect the system temperture correctly. As a result, it could cause the cooling fans to run at high speed, eventually damgaging the logic board or processors.
Lastly, I would never run a Mac w/o UPS, which can lengthen life and protect equipment and even the PSU.
And for $1500 the iMac Apple Store Specials can be a good fast alternative to G5.

  • What's wrong with my external backup disk?

Owner of a Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 where a lot of precious files are kept, I decided to back them all up to an external 1 TB Transcend around a year ago.
Everything has been going well, until I witnessed this:
Several times the notification was a little bit different:
It could have made sense because of what the storage statistics said:
    BUT.
This is, there seems to be not a single backup on the HD, probably because I have manually got rid of them to make room on the disk.
But then, what takes up those 700 GB on it?
I am, sort of, not that good in this stuff, thus left clueless of what to do and how to go on backing up normally or manage the space on the disk the way I like. If anyone can give me a piece of advice, please reply! Thanks in advance.

lilsirecho wrote:Perhaps there is a limit to the size of an ext3 partition in mounting a USB external drive?
That can't be it, it worked fine for a long time. It's just that I haven't used the drive for a week or two and ever since I am not able to mount it anymore. I'm guessing something changed due to some update recently that made this happen.
Also, `fdisk -l` seems to be able to find my drive and its partition. 'sdb' and 'sdb1' also appear in under /dev. The drive is definately attached to my system, it's just that I can't mount it with hal or through the conventional methods.

  • What's Wrong With My Mac?

Hello, I'm having trouble with my iMac and i'm not real sure what it is. When I play a game, or a YouTube video, or something similiar, it will run fine then i see pixels discolored (some red, some green, yellow, rainbow colors to give you a better idea) appear all over or on parts of the screen just one. After they appear my mac freezes and i have to manuelly reboot it. if the pixels don't appear the screen acts as if it crashes, with pieces of windows everywhere and random stuff.
I have a early 2009, 24 inch mac with 2.93 GHz intel core 2 duo processor and 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory with NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256 MB graphics. my software is Lion 10.7.5
    thanks!

    Could be an overheating issue.
When was the last time you vacuumed out/cleared out the dust, lint and dirt for. all of your iMac's vents, ports and slots?
You have to power down your iMac, disconnect everything and unplug your iMac.
Use either a small electronics vacuum or a standard vacuum with hose and crevice tool attachment and slowly and carefully vacuum out all of the various vents, slots and ports around your iMac.
Then, reconnect everything, startup your iMac. Download and install iStat Pro or iStat Menus temperature monitor and report your iMac's new temperatures here.
If this turns out to be a GPU issue, this may solve the issue or it maybe too late and the GPU is damaged or failing and you may have to bring your iMac in to Apple for diagnosis and repair/replacement service.

You should certainly uninstall the worthless "Avast" product according to the developer's instructions, after backing up all data. However, the Huawei network device or its software may be contributing to the problem.

    Hi Keviin.
Welcome to the Disscussion Boards. Assuming your information is up to date (your running 10.4.6), I would advise you to check your systems updates and download Tiger 10.4.11. Then see if any of these issues are cleared up. Let us know.

  • TS2570 My Mac is stuck on grey screen what's wrong with it and am I going to lose everything

My Mac is stuck on grey screen what's wrong with it and am I going to lose everything

Hopefully you have a backup, but...
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Something is seriously wrong with my mac but I don't know what help me!

Problem: i have a 2011 mac book pro & recently since last month its been randomly freezing (sometimes the screen will just go blue or black or everything including the mouse will stop moving or its a kernel alert) this can happen when i try to open a program or just at random. when I try to turn it back on after I see the apple it stays at white screen and the fan starts blowing hard. after this happens i have to repeatedly turn it on and off just to get past the white screen after i do that. sometimes everything seems fine for a few hours works good everything. but sometimes it freezes & or gets stuck at white screen....
Things Ive done so far: After I called apple we did a few things..... we tried safe mode, we tried repairing the disk and disk permissions, moving to a new user, erasing cache, hardware test, removing certain apps, using specific key board commands to get past the white screen, reinstalling OSX, checking the ram and disk space....
and after all of this THESE ISSUES ARE STILL HERE! whats wrong with my mac anyone know how i can fix it?

Welcome to the club, my friend.
