What's wrong with my macbook? It shuts down after 1 minute!

Last night I updated my macbook with something, didn't see what it was, but it required a restart, so I did that. After that, when I was using my macbook it froze all the time, so I tried restarting it a couple of times, but the freezing kept getting worse. I couldn't use it because it froze even before I could click on anything. Then I tried rebooting it in safe mode, but it took ages (I know it is supposed to) so I shut it off before it was finished. Now I can't start my macbook!! I can turn it on and the sound and the apple logo is there, but after 1 minute it shuts down. I don't know what to do! I don't have a backup harddisk (I know it's stupid) and I have some really important stuff on there, so I really don't want to loose everything. Is there some way I can save everything?? Please help, I'm lost!  The macbook is 4 years old, it's a White one.

If Disk Utility isn't able to repair your drive it may be a lost cause. You can try a more robust repair tool, I'd recommend DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/ If that won't do it I'd say you've just learned about backups the hard way. Since you can boot into the recovery partition your hard drive isn't dead but your boot partition has become corrupt.

What's wrong with my macbook pro (15" early 2011) when i connect it with TV via hdmi

    Hello Alex,
It sounds like you are getting excessive CPU usage when connecting an external display via HDMI to your computer. I would try the troubleshooting steps outlined in the article named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
Reset the systemYou can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

when i plug in my charger to my macbook and have it charged all the way i can only use it for an hour before it dies on me again. what is wrong with my macbook? what can i do to fix it?

Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report in 10.7), then select Power from the left hand column of the System Profiler. Copy and paste the Battery Information back here.
Also it would help to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report in 10.7).When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.

  • MacBook Retina shuts down after a few seconds after every boot

    Hi there
My retina macbook keeps shutting down after booting and rebooting by its own a minute later. No error message is displayed or anything like it, it just magically shuts down.
It had been working fine until now but it seems to be going crazy for whatever reason...
When it shuts down by itself, I can't turn it on myself. It does it on its own even if the lid is closed and then shuts down again after about 30 seconds.
This only happens when it's connected to a power source (it doesn't even start when it's not).
I have tried to reset the PRAM without success.
The only time the issue doesn't happen is when I do a Safe Boot.
Can anybody tell me what is up with my Macbook (I really need it for work AND school).
    Thanks

Have you done a SMC reset?

  • On starting up, my macbook pro shuts down after 25 seconds of booting up.

Hi there. On starting up, my macbook pro shuts down after 25 seconds of booting up. The time bar comes on for a while before it simply goes blank and switches off without any notification. Battery iappears charged. Could it be a virus? Help please!! O

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • What is wrong with my Macbook Pro? (distorted screen, beeping, slow)

I have a late 2012 Macbook Pro (13-inch) that I got from Best Buy. It worked perfectly fine for a year, but then went crazy.
First, it started shutting down here and there, and icons bounced a lot in the dock. Then, one day, I googled something and it froze, then flashed a strip of multicolored barcode-like lines. So, I shut it down and it overheated then began to beep 3 times and flash a light.
I brought it in and they just wiped the hard drive. Then, it happened again while I was watching a video only a short time later. I was going to re-seat the RAM myself but the inside of the computer looked all messed up. I took it in and they gave me a new LCD but it has a dead pixel now. It worked fine for 1 month after that.
Then, I was using the laptop on my bed and it shut off randomly a couple of times while I was on Facebook and started beeping. I rebooted it and tried to fix it but it happened again the next day. I brought it back to Best Buy and they said it was hot and sold me a $20 cooling pad.
That worked for a few days, then I was watching TV online and it happened again. I brought it back to Best Buy and they replaced the RAM. Now, I was watching something online and it happened yet again. I was able to reboot and it worked okay now for a couple of hours but it did freeze again and I had to shut it down.
Everytime I go to Best Buy, they tell me "If we have this issue 1 more time, we will replace your computer." But, then, they say the same thing every time and that it's their policy. I have paid for Office now and only have 1 download left. Also, this is ridiculous because I'm a student and I've had my Mac gone for 2 weeks at a time at least 3 or 4 times. When this happens, I get stuck using my iPad and can't use flash so I've spent tons of money of apps for flash and other things to make my iPad functional.
Can somebody just tell me what's wrong with it? It "passes the hardware test" every time and the Geek Squad keeps asking me stupid questions like "Did you check your internet connection and reset your modem?" When I asked them the first time to do a PRAM test, they didn't know what that was and asked me to go on iTunes or clear my cache or something like that.
I have had a bad experience with them altogether. I got my Macbook for $500 because I had a PC before that I paid $700 for and it eventually broke. They were unable to repair that one because the hard drive had failed, although they had previously been convinced that I needed to uninstall my Norton to fix that problem.
Sorry if I'm ranting, but my Macbook is like a child to me (not to sound weird) and I'm sick of this problem. It's working fine at the moment but I know this will happen again randomly like always.

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search, and select the most recent panic log under "System Diagnostic Reports." Post the contents -- the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID” and "Kernel UUID," two long strings of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report. Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.

  • What's wrong with my Macbook?

I appreciate all help that anyone apart of the forum can provide me with, even the smallest bit of information.
I bought my Macbook in September of 2010.
A few months ago my Macbook was working fine; I was using it sometime in the night and closed it down before going to bed. When I woke up my Macbook was acting quite strange leading to its current condition. First of all the computer is not reading the battery. I can only use my macbook when it's plugged in via its wall charger. If the charger comes out, the Macbook automatically shuts down.
I also have my hard drive partitioned with Bootcamp, Windows XP. Whenever I boot to my Mac side it's really laggy and basically un-usuable. This has forced me to use Bootcamp for the past few months (which, might I add, works perfectly fine). When i try to load into Mac it also takes an insane amount of time on the booting screen. The only time it's even SOMEWHAT, but still barely, useable is when I boot it into safe mode.
The fan is always on, and loud, as soon as the computer is turned on.
I assume that this is something hardware-related, and I was wondering what options I have as far as getting my Macbook fixed. I need it for my upcoming university semester and me being on vacation is what prevented me from taking action towards the problem earlier. Is there someway I can get Apple to fix it for me or possibly replace the hardware, or the laptop. It has not been a year since I purchased my Macbook (which I purchased at Best Buy).

Your machine is still under warranty. Make a Genius Bar appointment to have it checked out right away and repaired as needed while you still have warranty coverage.

  • I need help figuring out what is wrong with my Macbook Pro

I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro with OS X Mavericks on it and for the past few weeks it has running VERY SLOW! I have no idea what is wrong with it, i have read other discussion forums trying to figure it out on my own. So far i have had no luck in fixing the slowness. When i open applications the icon will bounce in dock forever before opening and then my computer will freeze with the little rainbow wheel circling and circling for a few minutes... and if i try to browse websites it take forever for them to load or youtube will just stop working for me. Everything i do, no matter what i click, the rainbow wheel will pop up! The only thing i can think of messing it up was a friend of mine plugging in a flash drive a few weeks ago to take some videos and imovie to put on his Macbook Pro, he has said his laptop has been running fine though... so idk if that was the problem. Anyways, could someone please help me try something? Thank you!!

  • What is wrong with my Macbook?

I dropped my macbook (2007 model) and the screen is so cracked that I can not see anything. I got a mini-dvi - vga cord and plugged it into a monitor, but when i turn it on, it just goes to the mac background, and will not show the login screen. What is wrong with it?

it's putting the monitor as second display, so the login screen (i'm guessing) is only displaying on the first—main—screen, the the one that is cracked.
restart the macbook and don't touch anything. when the background appears on the secondary monitor, you know the login screen must be up on the first monitor. so type in your username, hit TAB once, then your password.
you should be able to log in now. then follow these instructions:
(bare in mind i'm running 10.6.8)
    1) press ALT+F2 to open up displays in system preferences.
    2) you should be able to see a dialog open up in the secondary monitor
    3) if this has a "Gather Windows" button, press it
    4) if step 3) works, you should be able to switch around the main displays, or turn on mirror mode, or whatever

  • What's wrong with my Macbook? It randomly switches off. Could it be the charger?

Hi..so I've had my macbook pro for almost two years now. No problems with it, but I find that their charger cables or headphones are weird as they always break for me one way or another. My charger started breaking a year ago, still works, just the green wires at the top have come out so I taped it. The charger still works. Anyway..today I was on my macbook, it was charging and it was on about 65%, then when I moved it somehow (I was adjusting it on my legs cause I was sitting down), it switched off. The charging light went off and the charger wouldn't work. After about 10 seconds I could switch my macbook back on. When the home screen came on, my date and time have been reset and I was disconnected from my internet and my background changed. I put everything back to normal and then after unplugging the charger and playing around with it I connected it to my macbook. It worked again. Now the same thing happened again. I somehow moved it and it switched off! What's wrong with it ? Can it be because of the charger or some virus or something? I tried checking the logs and Crash Reporter but nothing came up. Can anyone help? thanks

Let's address the breaking cable issue first.  To unplug any cable, you need to grasp the connector shell, and pull.  It is wrong to simply grab the cable wire, and give it a yank.  For the other issue, try perfoming SMC and PRAM resets.

  • What's wrong with my MacBook, it only works when its plugged in to the wall charger

my MacBook only works when its plugged in with the wall charger. What's wrong with it? it the problem fixable ?

    Marina -
What Kappy said, or maybe your Battery charging cable is faulty, or something's happened to the input slot.
I'd take it to Apple and have them troubleshoot it for you.

  • What's wrong with my Macbook Air?

Yesterday I was using it and everything seemed to be working perfectly. I turned it off and when I tried turning it back on, it got stuck on the grey screen with the apple at the beginning and didn't do anything else. I tried pressing shift while I turned it on and it finally worked. Now, it's being really weird, it's showing me a message saying 'Shockwave Flash has crashed' when I try loading a site on the internet, also, my Volume buttons are not working, they seem to be locked and if I turn it off and back on again, it takes forever to load.
    Help what's wrong with it?

Try booting to your Recovery Partion, by holding down the OPTION key while booting, and then select the Recovery Partion. Run Disk Utility from there, and Repair your Permissions, then Verify Disk. If Verify Disk finds reason to do so, run Repair Disk.
Shutdown, and see if it boots normally. If not, boot using the SHIFT key again (Safe Mode). From Safe Mode, update your Flash drom Adobe's site. Retry a normal boot.

    COULD ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME?
    Greetings!

I suspect your problem is related to the Antivirus software (Kapersky) you are running in MS Windows. However the previous posted suggested the possibility of a problem with the RAM and that may the issue too. If it is RAM it is one of these three things:
    1. Incorrect RAM (have you recently upgraded????)
    2. Unseated RAM (Open and reseat, it can come unseated on it's own)
    3. Failed RAM (simple to trouble shoot by checking each DIMM and each slot)
Try the RAM first, then after that I would recommend removing the Kapersky software and possibly unistalling MS Windows and uninstalling Fusion and then reinstalling Fusion and Windows but NOT using Kapersky again.
Finally here are some articles that can help you track down causes of KP's.
