What's your final cut set-up lile?

hello, i was wondering what people's editing set-ups were like. i am trying to get more into editing and curious to know what people have to get their work done.
i have a mac pro (2.66, 7300gt), 24in dell monitor, and a couple phillips speakers, along with fcs2 and cs3. i'm a recent grad so i've only done school projects and it worked great. i do eventually want to improve and stuff but i don't have a big budget. is this set-up usually pretty good for a lot of things? is there equipment that you must have with an editing system?
thx

The other question to ask yourself...
What kind of jobs am I going to take? Am I going to have to say NO to HD gigs? Will I say yes to DVCPROHD and NO to HDV?
Am I going to be doing broadcast or distrobution jobs where I'll need to make sure chroma/luma is calibrated correctly?
Are you going to wait until you NEED something before you buy?
For now you need:
CPU
Software (and manuals)
Deck
Storage solution
Speakers (sorry, I always use headphones - I'm the only one)
External Monitor - Anything from $100 bestbuy close-out to a $5000+ HD monitor.
Oh... and I'd invest in a good microphone too - you WILL find you need to do a VO for SOMETHING!!!
Good luck, let us know when you make your first million! I'm just starting my 3rd... but I lost the other two somewhere.

  • Final cut set up

I am new to final cut and macs. I have been working in final cut, but sometimes while I am working I get message saying that I am dropping frames. these is very annoying, so what I am really asking for is how to set my computer and final cut to work together the best for me. any help appreciated.

Regardless of what platform your NLE is based upon, it comes down to something simple: data rate. Also known as "bandwidth" and "throughput".
And, more importantly, sustained data rate. Your media drives must be able to sustain the transfer rate required to read the file such that the video plays in real time.
With DV-NTSC, the minimum sustained transfer rate is 3.6Mb per second.
An external FireWire800 drive or additional internal SATA drive for all of your video and audio should do the trick provided that something else isn't interfering with playing the file.
The dialob box indicating that you are getting dropped frames lists a few items to check. Go through this to make sure you're meeting its suggestions.
Any number of background tasks can contribute to dropped frames during playback. For example, if File Sharing is enabled and another user is reading or writing data to your drive, this would cause dropped frames. Or, if you're ripping an audio CD in iTunes to your drive in the background while your editing, this would cause dropped frames.
Also, the default playback size of a DV clip is 50%. Sometimes, just setting the Viewer window and Canvas window to this size can resolve dropped frames.

  • Describe your Final Cut Pro editing workflow?

Being new to Final cut I would love to hear more about your workflow in Final Cut in terms of capturing clips, organizing clips, etc. Do you first color correct all your footage and then begin editing in timeline, do you color correct as you go? etc.

You color correct AFTER you have locked the cut. Doing so beforehand would be a waste of time.
I have a tutorial DVD on my organization workflow... Getting Organized in FCP.
Fro documentary, after I organize, I lay out the "radio cut", which is narration and soundbytes only. This is when I build the basic story. Then I go back and add footage, maybe add music at the same time. Then go back and add music or fine tune music, and add pacing to the cut. Maybe make a few changes.
But this is all dependent on having a script. If I had no script, I'd watch all the interviews and try to find a story, build minor sequence with storylines.
Narrative...that is VERY script based. I might have a separate sequence for a string of scenes...but I follow the script very much in the beginning, then go back and dissect the heck out of it...what works and what doesn't, work on the pacing.
BTW, I might be compensated by the above posted link.

  • What happened to Final Cut's integration with Motion??  Renders are hosed..

So is it just me? I have a HUGE project (1.5 hour bio/documentary) that is crashing Final Cut every time it tries to render or export. I was getting an error that said the crash could have been possible to a "ProGraphics plug-in." I can't locate any plug-in anywhere on any drive that's associated with "ProGraphics" at all. From what I gather it's something to do with Motion integration, causing problems with renders. Basically, I've used many Motion effects within my Final Cut sequences. They're nested everywhere, and were rendering just fine a few days ago (although I was still having issues with exporting). So basically I either need to wait for a fix, or go back and re-cut without the Motion graphics. Uggh. Disgusted and in need of a patch (or a drink).
My versions of all software are current, as is my operating system. I've done all updates and patches (I'm a versiontracker geek so I keep up with this stuff). I've deleted preferences, dumped all render files (that's when I figured out the rendering issues with Motion), rebuilt permissions, created a clean User Account, etc. I've done hardware tests on the drives and RAM. I'm out of options.
Can anyone from Apple confirm that there are indeed issues with this, just to reassure me that I'm not going insane?
    Thanks.

Try searching the forums for that ProGraphics term., might find something that helps.
Chances are you lost or damaged a system-level hook in one of your recent efforts to stay up to date. Most of us would not update QT or the pro apps until big projects are out the door or securely backed up. We often print to tape or export a completely flattened movie before running major upgrades to the Mac OS.
However, I just popped open an old FCP project that has some Motion work in it from about 8 months ago. Everything hooked right up and some tests rendered okay.
Huge projects with delicately nested elements need careful workflow decisions. I try to pre-render or use proxies where ever possible. Hard lessons learned over a decode of After Effects work. Hope you get better advice but searching for the ProGraphics error term will get you results faster.

  • What is the Final Cut Studio Universal Crossgrade?

I got an e-mail with an offer to purchase a "Universal Crossgrade" to Final Cut Studio for $49, but I'm not clear about what this is.
I already own FC Studio. Does "Universal" mean that all of the components are now in a single app so there's no more "round tripping" between apps?
Does "Universal" refer to the fact that this is compatible with both Power Mac and Intel based machines?
I'm confused about about what's new in this latest version.

    Mike,
The order form (http://images.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/pdf/Crossgrade.pdf) makes it look like you have to send in all 4 DVDs (Final Cut Studio, Motion 2, DVD Studio Pro and Soundtrack Pro).
This is the part that makes me a little squeamish. I haven't had any problems that require a re-install lately, but IF I DO before my new disks get here, I'm stuck. Also, what happens if I get the new version and there's a bug or something else about it that I don't like? Once again, I'm stuck.
    Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

  • What comes with final cut x

    Hi all,
I buy the Final Cut pro X version, from the App Store, at $299, does that includes Motion and Compressor? I was on the phone with an Apple Tech and she said that it was part of the $299 but when i look in details, it doesn't say...
    I am confuse.

So that is what I read $400 total. But apparently a lot was cut from the original version. Don't have the details but... How about DVD Studio Pro and Soundtrack. OK, ok, I will look on other forums thread, pretty sure all that was answered already :-)
Tom, when you talk about Final Cut Studio, it's version 7.0.3 isn't it?

  • OT: What to abbreviate Final Cut Server to?

Obviously FCS is out of the question... FCSe, maybe?

...now why is FCS out of the question? What does it currently stand for. Because I have a Quantum Super loader 3A that has an option to "Enable Support for FCS"... I ASSuMEd that stood for Final Cut Server.

  • Is there a Limit on what Ram that Final Cut will Utilize?

I just purchased 16 GB of RAM in particular to do Video with... Currently I am using Final Cut Express but want to purchase Final Cut Studio. I know that FCE only uses 2GB of Ram no matter how much you have, does Final Cut Pro have a RAM limit or will it use whatever is available. In other words is it worth me getting FCP or just stick with FCE?

My Mac Pro has 12 GB of RAM, and even though FCP only uses, as stated above, 2.5 GB, I almost always have DVDSP and Photoshop CS3 open at the same time (except when capturing), and this is where the extra RAM is handy.
It's nice to be able to design a DVD menu and design and print disc labels and box art while Compressor is encoding my FCP sequences.

    Hey guys.
My mighty mouse just arrived, its quite cool. i find the side squeezers very faffy to use though, quite an effort. The scroll ball is great, and it clciks in nicely.
I was wondering what you guys have your buttons set to do?
Right now I am set to:

    Side Squeezers: Dashboard
    Scrolling speed: Maximum (Fast)

    That was an exciting response!

  • What are the FINAL CUT STUDIO capture presets using a "Blackmagic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card"

A S-VHS cable and a/v cables are connected to the breakout box.
    What are the presets:
    1) Sequence Preset?
    2) Capture Preset?
    3) Device Control Preset?
    thanks

    1) Sequence Preset?
    2) Capture Preset?
    3) Device Control Preset?
Is this realted to your other question? Don't post more than once, please. GEt it right the first time and then wait. Patiently.
    1. Your sequence rpeset will be determined by the production's output taarget, it has nothing to do with the Balckmagic capture unless you alreday know what that will be. And you do, in fact, because VHS only comes in one way. When you bring your fist captured clip into a sequence, FCP7 will aks if you want to confrom the sequence to the clip's settings. Say yes. Done.
    2. Your capture is going to be regular ol' DV. There's no reason to try to use any other advanced codec for VHS. But you probalby hsould have a time base corrector or frame sync in the loop to help correct and stabilize ancient tapes. Your preset if NTSV DV
    3. There is not control for a VHJS deck. So une unctrolled device.

  • How to export your final cut pro X project to be opened on another computer

I have a fcpX project that I am currently editing, I want to give it to my video partner so he can continue editing it where I left off and complete it. How and what can I do for this to happen? I will putting the files

Duplicate the project with referenced events onto the external hard drive.

  • What OS for final cut server

Should I install on Snow Leopard server or just Snow Leopard?
What are the pro and cons?
I have a server in our office and FCS system and I am just thinking about combining them.
    Thanks for the response.

You can run both on one Mac, no problem, if it's a stand alone workstation. You don't need OS X Server in that case. You only need OS X Server if you're going to use XSAN or Ethernet and connect two or more workstations.
FCSvr 1.5 requires FCP 7 (FCS 3), and Snow Leopard (server or not), for best performance.

  • I finished adding my transtions to my timeline.  I was having crashing issues so I shut down everything before I rendered the project and now it tells me that the project is unreadable or the file is too new for this version of final cut. What Happened?

I finished adding my transtions to my timeline.  I was having crashing issues so I shut down everything before I rendered the project and now it tells me that the project is unreadable or the file is too new for this version of final cut. What Happened?

    What Happened?
No way for us to know.  But if your system was crashing, there definitely was a problem.  The FCE error message you got normally indicates the FCE project file has been corrupted.  This probably happened due to whatever caused your system to crash & shutting down the system.
First, make sure your system is running correctly.  Then, use the Finder to navigate to /users/yourusername/Documents/Final Cut Express Documents/Autosave Vault and find the most recent backup copy of your FCE project file.  Copy the file to your Final Cut Express Documents folder (copy the file, don't just move it).  Then double-click the copy to open it in FCE.  It should open ok, but will probably not have your most recent edits (transitions).  You may have to rebuild the transitions, but at least you will be back in action.
