What's your sound system ? Home Theater ? PA ? other options ?

Please chime-in and post your system even if you have no other comment .
I just ordered the supped-up iMac and Logic Pro and I am excited to get started .
Now I'm just using my old Pioneer stereo system which really puts out but it's a mess of wires and I would like to get a new system .
Option #1) I'm looking for a small PA like the Passport 150 . Anybody ever use their pa for sound ? What about the Bose Column PA's ?
#2) There are lots of home theater systems in all price ranges since logic does surround sound .
#3) Pro studio speakers . I don't really see why they cost more ??
As a horn player I do like to turn up the volume sometimes to play-along so little computer systems (even really good ones) would probably not do .
Powerbook eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Pro studio speakers . I don't really see why they cost more ??
well this is a pretty simple one.. because studio monitors are actually a great deal better than home theatre speakers, in terms of faithfull reproduction of sound.
fact is, most sound systems for the domestic market are not much more than cheap components put together in nicely designed boxes. the boxes range from nicely designed to very nicely designed, and some high end ones are even extremely nicely designed.. boxes. made of either nice wood, very nice wood or extremely nice wood. then, you print a pretty, lifestyle-ey brochure, full of fancy looking diagrams and lots of talk of acoustics and transducers. these brochures range from nice to very nice to extremely nice, depending on how much you want to sell the system for, targeting exactly the kind of living room that it is designed to look good in.
if you want to use logic to record and produce music properly, you'd be better off going for monitors that are intended to let you hear what is going on as best as possible, as opposed to a system that is designed to give as exciting a listening experience possible for watching DVDs in surround, while looking well-coordinated with the sofa. the studio monitor market is pretty broad right now, there is a good choice of very decent powered monitors available at fair prices.

  • Help! Suddenly no sound from home theater speakers!

I bought a Sony KDL 46W5100 TV and the BDVE300 Home theater system at BB. I have always had these two hooked up directly to
each other with an HDMI cable and the digital optical cord. There are no other components involved.
We have always had surround sound to the HT speakers when the television speakers are set to 'audio system'
II am in NO WAY an audio/video expert, but I've had to mess with the settings here and there
after one of the kids reset something and I've always been
able to return the system to proper operation.
I am not sure what happened this time, but I cannot get the home theater speakers to give me any sound when in TV mode or
the BD/DVD mode. Theater mode does nothing for the sound either. I know the speakers are connected properly as they work during the 'test' and also when using the FM radio. I also know I am not on 'mute'
I do get video when playing a DVD or blu ray but no sound. I borrowed a BVD E770W, hooked it up and ended up with the same result.
This would lead me to believe that I have some rogue setting in my TV or maybe my HDMI cable is bad? I'm not sure about the
cable as I still have video through it.
I've re-read all my manuals, searched the forums online and I found nothing
Can anyone give me some advice here?
My family would greatly apperciate it

Try unplugging the power cord to TV and Surround receiver for 15-20 minutes. Plug back in and retry. If test tone & tuner have sound, your receiver is working. This will reset your data lines and hopefully restore operation. If not, and the DVD & TV sound hookup is coming thru the TV, the firmware in the TV may need to be updated found here:

  • Cannot send sound to home theater receiver

I have a HP Pavilion g6-1c57dx Notebook PC with Windows 7
The display adapter is 'Intel (R) HD Graphics family.
When I connect my Onkyo home theater receiver (TX-NR3008) to the computer via the HDMI port, I am able to send video to the receiver but not sound.
    Can anyone help?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
You can either connect your tv to your receiver using either HDMI or component (existing tv only) and then connect your receiver to the TV by the connection of your choice depending on what is available on both your TV and your receiver.
Alternatively, you can continue to connect your tv to your TV in your current configuration and use the optical audio connection to connect your tv to your receiver for audio only.

Apple cannot help you locate the original owner. If you have no way to contact him/her, and you purchased directly from the seller rather than through a site that offers buyer protection, then the iPad is useless to you and you have wasted your money. The iPad is quite probably stolen and you should turn it in to the police.
This is why it's very risky and usually unwise to purchase out of a car boot from someone you don't know.

  • What network audio sounds systems (e.g. Sonos) are recommended to work well with Macs?

I'm looking to replace my audiophile stereo system with a network audio system at home.  Had NAD components with English Epos hand-made speakers that sounded great, but very immobile.  I need speakers in each room of the house that can be networked, but which sound good.  Can anyone recommend a good system?  I've heard that Sonos doesn't play iTunes and doesn't sound very good anyway compared to more high-end wired systems.
Have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air with Time Capsule router and Airport Express unit.  All music on iTunes.

    1) How does Final Cut Pro 6 handle native HDV?
    Just like FC5.... no worries
    2) Is it beneficial to convert to Pro Res 422
Just like the Cineform codec you will benefit from an all i-frame codec when working with titles and graphics. I wouldn't recommend capturing native then converting to ProRez as this will take an extremely long time. Many have found editing native up until the compositing then dropping the sequence into a ProRez timeline to render. I prefer to uncompress the HDV with hardware into a capture card and transcode on capture in real time. Depending on the flavor of HDV and the equipment you use you can probably find a method for this. I shoot run & gun field work on to tape, then with the deck I can export via HDMI and together with another product from Convergent Design it is converted to HD-SDI in the a Kona LHe into FC. The benefit for me is the all digital decompression from 1440x1080 4:2:0 to a 1920x1080 4:2:2 uncompressed HD-SDI signal to use anyway I need to. As to which level of PR I can't comment but I have used the lower level and it looks great. As to raid setup I can recommend www.maxupgrades.com to help you add two - four more drives internally for unbelievable speed and expanded storage space you will want. The owner (Syed) will give you all the support you need to take advantage of the Mac Pro capabilities for a low cost high performance raid solution. Sounds like you have a great setup in mind, you may want to look into the Kona LHe capture card for capturing and monitoring and a Convergent Design product like the HD-Connect SI or MI depending on the deck you are using. If you need broadcast quality monitoring look into the Matrox MXO.
    Good Luck

  • How to connect Ipad Mini to external home theater speakers

    Hi,
Recently i bought a new ipad mini, now i want to know how can i connect my Ipad Mini to external home theater speakers (Sony). Please let me know what type of hardware and steps i have to use.
    Thanks in advance.

You should be able to use a 3.5mm plug cable to connect iPad to the AUX input of your sound system.
Make sure you set the volume to about 5% to 10% on you iPad.

  • IMAC =HDTV&HOME THEATER

How can i connect my IMAC to both HDTV(LG) and LG surround system (home theater) and get everything to work as one i.e IMAC to work on both TV & SURROUND SYSTEM. I got HDMI cables . I will appreciate  your help.

I don't think it work work for HD, at 800 MHz G4. Not enough graphics or CPU processing power to display HD at full screen without a lot of dropped frames.
Also, there is no way to connect a digital display over HDMI. You may be able to get acceptable standard def results with connecting it over VGA or other analog connection, but I believe an iMac G4 only mirrors the built-in display. So it may be stuck at 1024x768 as the max resolution. A typical HDTV's native resolution is 1920x1080.
You should test the output from the mini-VGA port using a regular multi-sync CRT display, if you happen to have one collecting dust or know someone that has one. See what resolutions you can achieve. You won't get any better if you connect it to an HDTV.

  • Macbook aluminum, connecting audio to surround sound system. HELP!!

    Hi,
I'm tryna connect sound running from my macbook to my home cinema kit. the sound system has a fiber optic input. so im trying to connect the sound via digital means. can you tell me what cables i need. I saw the fiber optic cables and i no the headphone jack can support fiber cable, but can some one tell me what piece i need to connect to my cable so i can stick it in the headphone jack of the mac.
    Hope this make's sense.

The headphone jack on the MacBook is a combined analog and digital optical port. Since it's the 3.5mm size, if you want to connect it to your sound system via a digital optical audio cable, you'll also need what's known as a mini-SPDIF to SPDIF adapter or cable. It looks like there's a cable with an adapter available at the UK online Apple store. If you already have a cable, you may be able to find one of the adapters at a local electronics store. They're usually available at a Radio Shack in the U.S., for example.

  • Itunes won't play anymore through external sound system

My mac functions as a Protools recording studio. The hardware (a Digi002 system) attaches to my G5 by firewire. Until recently, itunes worked just fine playing through this external system. I'd simply go to system preferences, change the sound inputs and outputs to Digi002.
These days I can still get all of my pro music software to play through this external Digi002 system. But something has gone amiss with itunes. It doesn't matter if itunes is already open, or not yet open. If I go to sound preferences and switch it to DIGI002, itunes ONLY plays through my internal compouter speaker. And if i go back to the sound preferences, i find that the external audio choice had been unchecked, as if by some function within itunes itself.
i have asked this same question on the Protools forum. Respondees give mixed answers, but basically say, yes it used to work, and no, it no longer works. Some say it WILL work, but you have to fire up your sound system BEFORE you turn on your computer. That is a totally disfunctional "solution" for my situation. Who wants to keep a sound system on all day long, when I may not use it for several hours at a time?
So what's going on here? And what did I install that made itunes suddenly not function with my external system? I strongly suspect it may be some newer version of itunes itself. If so, is there some workaround utility that will let me re-connect itunes to the Digi system? any help is appreciated.

Hate to do this, but we've gotta start with the simple **** first, and work our way up. The volume control in iTunes isn't turned down, is it?
Aside from that, you should launch Quicktime Player, go to File - Open, and open one of your iTunes songs in that, and see if you can hear sound there.

  • I am new to all this technology. I just hooked up apple tv but the sound comes only thru tv and not my sound system, any advice?

What do I need to do to make sound come thru sound system, not just tv when using apple tv?

How is the Apple TV connected to your sound system? Are you using the HDMI cable or an audio cable?

  • Can't connect my 2.1 sound system to my TV

I have my Element ELFDW406 connected to the (RCA) Audio Output on my TV. My TV speakers are still on, and no signal seems to be going to the 2.1 Sound System from the Audio Out on the TV. This TV has no headphone jack which I used on other TVs for the sound system.
I cannot find anything in the menu via the remote that lets you shut off the TV speakers and switch the audio out via the RCA output. Any Ideas?

    Hi Ronrak,
I’m not familiar with Element TVs having never actually worked with one before. From what I could find online, it sounds like you’re using the Element ELDFW406 and it looks like you’ve posted this in several other spots online without any success.
The Element website doesn’t have a manual listed for this model, but I was able to find a similar one in the series (ELDFW322) that should give me a better picture of what you’re looking at.
From what I’ve seen, it doesn’t sound like that model of TV has an option for RCA out and instead offers a Coaxial Audio output (S/PDIF) exclusively.
I can’t give a definitive answer though as I'm not able to find accurate information on your specific model. I might be able to recommend a solution to you, and I ask that you provide me with some quick information.
A list of all inputs/outputs on the back of your TV. (They don’t need to be in order, just tell me what each input/output is labeled as).
The model number of your sound system (or a list of inputs/outputs)
With this, I should hopefully be able to give you a better answer than “just use the remote”

  • How do I change the audio output to digital optical for my home theater?

It's only using the hdmi for audio on the television..

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unless the Apple TV is broken it always passes audio over the optical output.
Check your sound system is set up correctly, or try changing the Audio out and Dolby Digital settings on the Apple TV (settings > audio & video)

  • Home Theater Cabling Setup

Very soon, I will be migrating to a 64-bit install of Vista--and my computer audio will be coming from a Harman Kardon receiver in a 5. setup. This will be wired from an X-Fi XtremeGamer. How can I configure this to cause the fewest possible problems? Should I use optical out, or the sound blaster home theater cable? Can anyone comment on the reliability on surround sound output of their X-Fis?

If you want to take advantage of any of the Creative multichannel features then spdif is a no go (cmss/EAX). It will only pass through DTS/DD from source, and all other media will be stereo only. You will need to use the analogue outputs which as you can imagine will be some considerable bulk if you're going to use decent quality pairs (4 pairs for 7.) and finding 3.5 to RCA in lengths over .5m will be a chore unless you opt for cheapo 5m. My advice would be to forget Creative an opt for a manufacturer with a better support track record, better driver support track record, and a card with Dolby Digital Live via digital.
