What setting do I use to Network Mac 10.4.6 to PC Windows XP with Router

I am trying to hook up a Mac G4
with OS 10.4.6 and a PC with Windows XP through a Linksys Network
Everywhere DSL Router. The router would see the PC but not the Mac. Could
not connect to the internet with the PC through the router. Both
computers connect to the internet when they are individually hooked
to the DSL modem. On the Mac in System Preferences>Sharing>Services, Firewall and Inernet, should any boxes be checked? Is this the problem. I have the IP and DNS numbers for both computers.
Thanks for any help.
Sherry (who is new at this)

If this is not a wireless network, this may all be rubbish!
To which computer is the Linksys ADSL cable attached? If it is the PC, than the"Internet sharing" is done on the PC, so the Apple needs to log on to an existing connection. The Linksys will probably need to be told the Mac address of the Apple so that it gives the Apple permission to log on (Airport address - same thing). The Apple will need to have the Password to log on to the network- you should have set up a WEP password when setting up the router. They also need to be on the same Network i.e. both on WORKGROUP, or whatever. You need to set your FIREWALL to allow Internet, file and printer sharing. (The XP built in firewall doesn't seem have this option).
You should see your Apple on the network, you log on to it by double clicking the icon, typing your Mac "Short name" into the "User name" slot, and your Apple's password into.... wait for it..... the PASSWORD slot
On the Apple, from Finder>go>network this should bring up a panel with a folder with your network name on it, clicking on this folder should bring up the name of your computer, clicking on this should then invite you to open folders on your PC (Assuming you've set up a shared folder(s)).
If your printer is plugged into your PC..... Have fun!
Hope this helped - I'm sure that this is the sequence I used to, eventually, get mine talking. But different routers (Mine's Netgear) and different Firewalls may have different rules, but the principle will be pretty similar.

Can anyone tell me how to find what OS I'm using on the Mac?
Tiger or Leopard?
Also, how do I update from 10.6.8 to the latest version?

Go to the Apple menu and select "About This Mac". You will get a window similar to this one -
You current OS X version number will be shown as I've marked.
OS X 10.4.x is Tiger, 10.5.x is Leopard, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard, 10.7.x is Lion, and 10.8.x is Mountain Lion.
Whether or not you can go to the latest OS X version depends upon your hardware -
You will need to purchase the retail set for the OS X version you want; there is no pint in getting and installing any intermediate versions. Once the retail version has been installed, you can update it to the latest release for that version via download updater.

What setting should I use to make a small sized movie for my family that lives 1200 miles away. I am using the iSight with QT Pro 7.0.4 and will be emailing them via Apple Mail to my mom that uses the most current version of AOL for PC with a 1 Meg DSL connection. The reason I am emailing them is she does not have a camera to live chat.
The first movie I tried was over 4 meg and these files have to go over the internet. It bounced back saying it was to big. It was only a minute long.

• What setting should I use for Abbey Road drums? Getting a cpu overload issue

What setting should I use for Abbey Road drums (i.e. multi-output, stereo, etc)? Getting a cpu overload issue. I have a macbook pro, 4 gb ram, running Logic Pro 9. Just 3 tracks of drums and a few real instrument tracks. Can't find a guide in the manual for either Kontakt or Logic. Thanks in advance!

Hi
AR drums are complete resource (CPU) hogs. They work better if you turn off as many of the AR internal plugins as you can.
See section 4 (?) of the AR manual, which you can find within Kontakt (In the library area of Kontakt click hold the small "i" on the right of the "AR drummer" Library).
Alternatively, your only solution is to increase the I/O buffer in Preferences:Audio, with the associated increase in latency

• What setting for .MP4 using Magic Video Converter?...

What setting do you use for best video when converting video files to .MP4 using Magic Video Converter?? To play on Nokia N95 8gb.
After you have chose to convert to MP4, you can chose a load of diffrent "setting/format" for the MP4 file. But what would be best?

Here we go again.
Best for what?
Video quality, smallest size, TV-out, etc.
The best for TV-out is not the same than the best for watching in phone.
If you want the best size to quality compromise then a different setting may be better.
For example best quality to size compromise would be something like:
Container : MP4
Res: 320x240
Codec: Mpeg4 AVC h264 Baseline profile
Bitrate: 256 kbps
Framerate: as per source
Audio: AAC 44100 Hz @ 64 kbps

When I try to send an attachment using Word for MAC people have a hard time opening it with a PC. Can I do anything different?

shldr2thewheel already sent a teach-yourself way. Perhaps you could be more specific: any .doc file written in Mac OS is opened with difficulty? what version of Office on mac and what version in windows? any format, e.g. .doc or .rtf? Even a simple rtext of, say, 2-3 pages? or only long docs, e.g. 100 pages or more? what language is used? English or any other West European, Latin based text, or other scripts too? What do you understand by ‘people have a hard time opening it with a PC?’ takes a very long time? or does not open at all? etc. etc.

• What setting should I use to save file for upload to youtube

Hi,
the link below is the video on youtube that I just saved using the first setting that I always use using Flash. Now because of the change over, as we have discussed I have to save the file then upload it for sites I upload to after the change. I know I can save it on the For Windows one but it is not HD. As you will see when you play this video it is all shakey (and not because I am shaking the camera ).
The other link is the non shakey saved for windows version.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfjoqXIm2q0 Flash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2OwQ3GTSPE (saved For Windows)
Should I just resign my self to using the work around and use the save for Windows and not the FLASH. or is there a setting I can use that gets rid of the shake. However, since most of what I post is for people trying to sell their horses I would like the best quality I can get up on YouTube.
Thanks for your help. I really do appreciate it very much. Saves me hours of time.
Sarah

Because YouTube is so unpredictable -- and always changing it encoding systems -- your best bet is to use the workaround and output as a WMV file.

• Trouble setting up Time Capsule on Networked Macs

I have 2 networked Mac desktop G5's. I am trying to setup Time Machine to backup to an external drive which is connected to the other Mac. The external drive is already setup as a Time Machine disk, and it works fine on the machine where it is plugged in. I would like to be able to use the same drive to setup a Time Capsule and backup the networked Mac.
I am at work, and we are not allowed to use Airport for security reasons. When I click on Choose Backup Disk and Setup TC, it runs Airport Utility to find Airport. Of course, it can't because Airport is not installed. Help!

Hi Joan. This might help, however depending on how your network is configured at work, this may not be possible since you have have no control over the networks settings.
*_Backing Up to A Time Machine Hard Disk Attached to Another Mac_*
First, this will only work if both Macs are running Leopard (10.5) or Snow Leopard (10.6).
Open a Finder Window.
Select the icon of the other Mac in the Sidebar on the left.
Click “Connect As…” in the toolbar of the window.
Enter the username and password of THAT Mac.
Check “Remember password in my Keychain” if you wish to avoid having to enter the password next time.
Click “Connect”.
The desired Time Machine disk will now appear in the Finder window. To mount it double-click the blue folder beside the drives name. This will mount it on your desktop.
Now open Time Machine Preferences and select the drive.
The countdown timer will start, or you could just select “Back Up Now” from the Time Machine menu.
Let us know if this resolved your issue. Cheers!

If they're both on the same network you can enable file sharing on both and transfer files through your LAN, you don't need any cables.

• Setting applications to use specific network interfaces

How do I configure my computer such that specific applications will default to a different network interface than all the rest?
I want to set it up so that Adium always tries to use AirPort first and everything else uses ethernet if it's available.
Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.8) 1GB RAM

You can't (normally) get there from here.
What you're trying to do is affect the routing (route certain traffic through a specific interface). The issue is that routing works at the IP level, not the application level. This means that you can tell the system to route a.b.c.d (e.g. the address of the IM server you're connecting to) through a speciic router at w.x.y.z (e.g. the AirPort).
In order to do this, though, you need to have different IP address/subnet masks on each interface.
For example, assuming your wired ethernet is using 192.168.1.2/255.255.255.0 and your wired ethernet router is at 192.168.1.1, and your AirPort interface is using 10.1.1.2 with the AirPort router at 10.1.1.1 you can run the command:

sudo route add a.b.c.d 10.1.1.1

and all traffic for a.b.c.d will go over the AirPort link.
Note that it doesn't matter what protocol you use - any traffic destined for a.b.c.d, whether it's AIM, HTTP, FTP or anything else - or what application you use - Adium, Safari, FireFox, etc. - they'll all use the AirPort link.
Note that this technique will NOT work if you have both interfaces on the machine configured in the same subnet, but this is not a supported configuration, so you shouldn't be doing that anyway.

• Set applications to use specific networks

i am setting up my networking on a mac pro4,1 (intel) and i have attached too two separate ethernet networks, both are working fine. one is my work server (thru switch to t3) and the other is an inhouse dsl. i want to route traffic from specific applications to specific networks: (i.e. 'firefox' to inhouse and 'entourage' to work server). i have set up the networking with different 'location' configurations so i can change which i use but i want it to work on the fly. how is this done?

• What setting should I use?

I have a Canon EOS7D camera. I am just starting to get into the video portion of this camera. I have it set to record in 1080P 1920 X 1080 resolution. I want to maintain this resolution but I noticed that making a trial run shows a 720. When I use Canon software to make a conversion to run on Windows media I notice a crisper, cleaner picture. The Adobe MOV has sort of a haze. I wish to save the video movie to my computer at the highest possible resolution. any suggestion. I am new at videos.

>fully support 60p at 1920x1080
I only use 1080i with my Canon Vixia (AVCHD) so I did not save any links... and the forum search won't work within a single forum... but I am **almost** sure that I've read over in the PPro side that it also will not work with that format, since such is not possible as an output format even on BluRay, and PPro therefore does not support that format for editing
But... without a working single forum search... I can't be 100% sure that my memory is correct
OK... using Google and entering this in the search window
site:forums.adobe.com simon 60p
I did find what I remembered... PPro will edit 60p, but you can't put it on a BluRay
