I have a Sony V3 camera and using "MPEG Streamclip". I would like to know what are the best settings for converting my movie clips for use in iMovie. Also, I am pretty new to this so can anyone tell me what the Apple MPEG2 Playback Componant does and do I need it to help with my Sony movie conversion?

Export your clips in DV format from MPEG Streamclip. There are two options on the right side of the export screen for non-interlaced or progressive scan video. Uncheck those as suggested on the screen - the video from your camera is not interlaced.
You need the MPEG2 Playback component if your movie is in MPEG-2 format. You need it if you want to convert video clips from a DVD, including DVDs created with a DVD camcorder.

Through this forum I learned about mpeg streamclip. Thanks so much! Now I am able to convert an mpeg to a mov and keep the audio and quality, etc. Now my problem is that I am building a site, refering to the movies externally so they play in quicktime, which is working but they take too long to load and play. The info is:
Format: MPEG-4 Video, 320 x 240, Millions AAC, Stereo, 48.000kHz
FPS: 15
Data Size: 1.23 MB
DRate: 340.34 kbits/sec
Time: 00:00:02.10/15
Duration: 00:00:30.6/15

That's not a big file but for some reason it's taking long to load. I've seen so many clips online that just play right away and they seam long. What am I doing incorrect when I exported to Quicktime?

Use QuickTime Pro and encode video with H.264. Take a look at this post and look for 'Fast-Start.'

Converting .flv in MPEG Streamclip - video 'fuzzy'...

Hello - I converted my flv files in MPEG Streamclip, to DV; Qtime; AVI -- also downloaded Perian, so that I could use downloaded w/videos from YouTube, etc... I then imported them into Final Cut, however, I noticed the video quality isn't as good, and a bit pixilated/fuzzy. Is there a way to make the video more crisp/clear, when converting flv in MPEG Streamclip? Thanks!

For flash compression i would recommend you use On2 VP6 codec, instead of the sorrenson spark codec. As far as making them clearer, unfortunately you get what you put in. So taking a FLV which is a delivery format and converting it to a video format you are not going to get any better quality then the original clips.
For a conversion setting in mpeg streamclip, i recommend Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC, Quality 100%, Sound Uncompressed.

Optimal settings for MPEG Streamclip convering mpgs to quicktime format

Hello Folks,
a newbie to this video converting world.
I've got loads of mpgs from the past, which I'm trying to convert to Quicktime(mov) format for use on my apple tv and also to publish to DVDs.
I tried the following:
- Compression - Apple Intermediate Codec
- Quality - 100%.
My 1G mpg file was converted to a 10G file!! I dont think I can afford to convert at this rate.
Can someone recommend an optimal setting on MPEG streamclip for this conversion with a balance on file size/quality?

No. You would need to upscale to HD and that's never good. Some TVs, expensive ones, can uprez fairly well, most can't. SD just looks very poor on an HD display.
Yes, sorry, the frame size needs to be 720x480, the standard DV format. Funny, I knew as I was typing it that there was something I was forgetting to include.

No audio - what exact demux option in MPEG Streamclip?

I have a bunch of MPEG1 Muxed video files from my brother-in-law's still camera. Imported into FCE, video is fine, no audio. Read many message boards and determined that the files are muxed (audio and video together) so then downloaded MPEG Streamclip. I've tried varioius Demux, Export, and Convert options, but still no audio in either FCE or even QuickTime Player. As an experiment, I sent a file to my Dell. Both video and audio played in Windows Media Player. So the audio is there, but why can't I get it on my Mac and import it into FCE? What exact Demux, Export, or Convert option should I be using in MPEG Streamclip? Or is there an FCE setting I'm missing? I also tried bbDemux with no luck. If you have an idea, please be specific!

Thank you, Meg The Dog. That worked just fine. You didn't specify which Export/Convert/Demux menu item to use so I used simply Export to QuickTime. The other method (Demux to Unscaled M2V and AIFF) produced audible files but your method was more straightforward for importing into FCE and may be better quality.
For the record, here is what the MPEG Streamclip user's guide says:
Demux to Unscaled M2V and AIFF...
demuxes the stream and creates an "unscaled" M2V video file and an AIFF audio file; you can import these two files in Final Cut Pro 4 or HD (and also in Final Cut Express if you have the MPEG-2 component); usual rendering time is required. Please DO NOT use drag & drop to import the files (Final Cut may crash due to an internal bug), but open the M2V file using the File menu and the AIFF file will be automatically linked (if you used the same name for the two files).
The "unscaled" M2V file is a demuxed file which tells QuickTime and Final Cut to not prescale it, e.g. to 720 x 540; it preserves its original size e.g. 720 x 576 or 720 x 480 so you won't lose quality when you render it. This is a special feature of MPEG Streamclip.
That, however, produces two files. Only need to import the .dv file, which is why I say your Export to QuickTime method is more straightforward.
Thanks for all the help. I still do not understand why the audio plays through my internal but not external speakers (any ideas?), but I will mark my question answered. I also wonder why muxed video files from a primarily still camera creates such a problem. Isn't this commonplace? How do people edit footage like this without jumping through all these hoops?

Assuming your DVD plays widescreen, the better settings in MPEG Streamclip would be:
Export to QuickTime
Compression = Apple Intermediate Codec
Frame size = 1920x1080
Pretty much everything else should remain at default settings.
Keep in mind that if you have an NTSC DVD, the resulting QT/AIC video will be 60i.
In FCE, select the AVCHD 1920x1080i60 easy setup, create a new sequence, import the converted file and edit away. The quality should be very nice.

I meant within the program, not when trying to open the file. You need to convert it to be able to play in QT
Here is a screenshot to give you an idea, MPEG Streamclip is reliant on codecs and that will determine what you can convert to. If something is missing than that is a codec you need.

Why do my DV files look better when played in MPEG Streamclip than iMovie?

My home movie DV files look washed out (compared to what my tapes looked like I played them on the TV years ago) when played with both iMovie '06 and iMove '11. The claim has been made that if I retransfer my tapes using iMovie '06 (rather than '09, which I used last time, or '11), there will be a dramatic improvement in the visual quality (and there will be some unspecified benefits if I set the dial to 48K audio). HOWEVER, if I play the files I already have in MPEG Streamclip, the visual quality improves substantially without any retransfer. Here is my question: Why? Why do my iMovie-imported files look better in MPEG Streamclip than in iMovie?
Here is my layman's answer: algorithms. When MPEG Streamclip encounters the exact same arrangements of molecules (or whatever), it has some plan for what to do with them that is smarter than what iMovie does. Is this another sign or way that iMovie is not well suited for DV?

Using MPEG Streamclip for Mac. Help me if you can

Hi, I've found out about MPEG Streamclip in Apple Discussions.
I opened Streamclip for the first time and converted an .mpg file to .mov file by clicking File>Export to Quicktime. It successfully converted quickly and I opened it w/ Quicktime and was satisfied to open its properties and see two individual tracks for visual and audio. This should convert to iPod video format w/ sound, correct? What bugs me is the fact that the file size multiplied by 4, or went from 256MB to 1GB.
I would like to know the perfect exporting settings for good iPod quality (sound and visual) and reasonable size. What scares me is that if and when this newly 1GB file is converted to iPod, it'll be even larger, since a previously successfully converted movie went from 3.5MB to 5.1MB.
I'd like to know your experiences of using Streamclip. Should I experiment? What setting did you use to get the mpeg files to .mov files with smallest size and equivalent quality? Any reply is appreciated, and ones that answer my questions shall be favoured.

In a nutshell, YES you should experiment. You should also try iSquint incidentally.
However, MPEG Streamclip 1.5.1 has an iPod button if you do File -> Export to MPEG4. Clicking that button sets the parameters to equal what the iPod would need to display without having to convert to a QuickTime movie first. Do one both ways to see if QuickTime and MPEG Streamclip's output looks identical (I've found QuickTime does a better job on animation).

MPEG Streamclip Batch Pixelation

I have a strange issue. When I use MPEG Streamclip to convert a video to MP4 one at a time it runs absolutely fine and the video looks perfect. However when I start a batch conversion I get all sorts of pixelation throughout the resulting MP4s. I am setting them to convert with exactly the same perimeters as if I were converting one at a time but for some reason they are a much worse quality. Particularly on transitions within the video. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea why this may happen when doing big batches and not when done singly? I'm stumped!!

I have MPEG Streamclip 1.8, Mac OS X 10.3.9, QT 7.1.6, no Flip4Mac etc installed.
If I drag a bunch of files from the Finder into the Batch window, I'm asked what to do ("Export as DV"), where to save the converted files, enter conversion options and then I find that only the first file is added to the list.
With my setup all (five) MPEGs were added to the list and the conversion options were asked only once. And all files were processed.
So I tried the "Add Files..." button. "Files" is plural, but NOOOoooo. I was asked the same questions as above, but only the first file was added to the list.

Did you choose "Join all the files" in the conversion options? THEN only the very first input MPEG is processed (all the input DV files are processed, though). Seems like a bug with the MPEG input. But was that your problem?

Sequence Settings for .mov clips from MPEG Streamclip

I'm converting some DVD clips (from old DVDs I created) that I exported to QT using MPEG Streamclip.
When I put them in the timeline sequence, I have to render everything.
Can I change the sequence settings to avoid this? And can I change the settings of a sequence that already has clips in it?

MPEG STREAMCLIP: I need Exact export settings please...

Does anyone have the correct settings for exporting Via MPEG STREAMCLIP. I know that there is a H.264 and MPEG-4 option in the codecs. I DO NOT want to use the 640x480 iPod settings since there is resolution loss from the DVD's.
So what setting and bit rates would I have to use to crate a video file that is playable in AppleTV without having to go through QT Pro. I know I can encode a 720P file (and I will do that so I don't lose resolution), but is there anything in between the two taht Apple TV will play at 24P. Threre is a 950x540 but is says at 30 FPS.

How do you determine the proper crop values? I'm used to using MediaFork, which crops for you.There are basically two strategies:
1) Ensure that the file is displayed at it's proper aspect ration and then crop out what you don't want. That which remains you keep and convert to your target format.
2) Decide what the target aspect ratio is supposed to be and then crop/scale the file so it will meet those requiements.
In addition, there are differing strategies in determining encode/decode efficiency as a trade off for the accuracy of your aspect ratio. MPEG Streamclip, for instance, sacrifices encode/decode efficiency for exactitude in aspect ratio while MediaFork/HandBrake is just the opposite. Ex. Streamclip will allow you to create a 720 x 405 (16:9 or 1.78:1 aspect) while MediaFork or HandBrake would default to 720 x 400 (1.80:1 aspect ration). Since 720 and 400 are both evenly divisible by 16 but 405 is not, the MeadiaFork/Handbrake application would likely conver slightly faster than streamclip with all oter factors being the same. But, the Streamclip file would have the more accurate aspect ratio for scaling by TV or your HDTV.
As to actually entering the settings, you must first decide which strategy combination you plan to use. If the movies containg scenes which are display smaller than other scenes, scrub the play head to that location and set "in' and "out" points for tests. At this point you mst decide which strategy combination you plan to use before proceeding any further.
a) In the first case, simply tick the Streamclip "Crop" option and enter estimated valus. Now press the preview button and preview the output. If not satisfied, abort the preview and modify your entries. Repeat these steps until you are satisfiled. Do this for each movie as it is common for each to be centered differently or be of a slightly differeing size.
b) In the second case, you must now determine your target dimensions. For instance, lets say you have a movie which is specified to have a 2.35:1 aspect ratio and plan to export it at a width of 854 pixels. In this case, Streamclip has probably defaulted to an 854 x 480 (16:9) screen setting in your work area. However, your movie displays with a black "letterbox" top and bottom. To calculate a proper height for you movie at this width, simply devide 854 by 2.35 and you should get an answer between 363 and 364. If you plan to go for a "most accurate" aspect rato, then simply select the "Custom" display option and enter a width of 854 and a height of either 363 or 364. Now tick both the "Crop" and "Scale" Streamclip option and process as described above. Simply enter your crop values and previed the result. In this case however, ther cropped picture will always be rescaled back to the "Custom" display size you specified for your output.
While values will be different depending on which workflow you elect to use in paragraphs "a" or "b", the final displays should by approximately the same. In the first instance, the final output will be determined by the total amount of "overscan" included in the original content over and above the aspect ratio while in the second instance, the overscan will be scaled to fit within the aspect ratio you specified. This may sound confusing at first, but the principals and procedures are quite simple in practice once you get used to applying them.

Using MPEG Streamclip to convert files for EX-1 sequence

I am trying to use MPEG Streamclip to convert mp4 and mpeg files in order to edit them in the same sequence as my EX-1 footage. What settings should I use on MPEG Streamclip that would be most appropriate for seamlessly editing the former MPEG and mp4 files with the EX-1 footage? Any thoughts on what sequence settings I should use? Right now I have it set as "XDCam Ex 1080p24 VBR" but every time I bring in files I have tried to convert using MPEG Streamclip, they need to render and I'm trying to avoid that. Thanks!

Process for exporting in FCPX and then using MPEG Streamclip to downgrade?

I have footage shot with a 5Diii, and it is set at 1920x1080, 23.98p.
When I export through FCPX at H.264, it gives me a beautiful master file, but is larger than the 4GB that I need.
What is the process for using MPEG Streamclip to get a smaller file?
Do I export a master file in FCPX first using a different codec, and then use MPEG Streamclip to compress it? If so, what would be the best setting to export from FCPX, and then what would be the best setting to compress at in MPEG streamclip?
My goal is to be as close to 1080HD as possible.

Here is the background story....... I provide movie files on a DVD delivery (files in SD quality) and then also give a copy of the same films on a flash drive so clients can have it in HD quality, and plug the flash drive directly into the TV.
This always worked fine in the past until I ran into a movie file that is 4.7GB, and would not copy onto the flash drive, since flash drives only accept files up to 4GB.
So I tried reformating the flashdrive to exFAT. It allowed me to copy the 4.7GB on the flashdrive, but when I tried plugging it in directly to the TV, the TV did not recognize the drive. (I learned that exFAT is not always compatable with all TVs.)
My other option would be to download an app to let me reformat the drive into NTFS which accepts files bigger than 4GB, and supposedly works better with TVs. I haven't tried this yet because I am worried that downloading that app might mess up my computer. ???????
So....I have come to the conclusion that the only other thing I can do is compress the 4.7GB file to be 4GB (or less) so it will fit on the flash drive which I believe had an original format was MS-DOS FAT.
Are you suggesting instead of exporting the file from FCPX in H264, I should do it in ProRes? The file will be much larger than 4GB, but, then I can compress it, without losing as much of the quality as I would if I compressed an H264 file? Either way it needs to be 4GB or less, so I don't know if that defeats the purpose of using a ProRes file to begin with.

Problem with reading mp4 files with QT 7.4.1 or mpeg Streamclip

Hi,
I used to convert some .flv files into .mp4 files with iSquint and then into .dv files with mpeg Streamclip in order to re-work and compile these files on a DVD using iMovie and iDVD.
However I cannot do it anymore since I upgraded to QT 7.4.1. iSquint uses the mpeg-4 video codec to convert the file. Therefore I cannot open them with QT 7.4.1 anymore and I cannot convert them into .dv files with mpeg Streamclip anymore since Streamclip is uses a QT plug-in.
I have tried to solve the problem using Perian but this plug-in does not work with my version of Mac (Panther 10.3.9). I also tried to downgrade to an older QT using Pacifist but it nearly crashed my whole computer (fortunately I could fix that by reinstalling QT 7.4.1).
Has someone a solution to my problem?

Not all the following will apply to Panther (10.3.x) so look carefully on the sites mentioned for the correct versions:
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 or 7.4 and OS 10.4.11. (If you are running Leopard, ensure that all plug-ins have been updated for OS 10.5)
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:

You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11 or Leopard, that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2007-009.1.1, which also deals with the Quicktime/Flash issues you may have experienced, such as the '?'. What happened was that both Quicktime as well as Adobe FlashPlayer tried to play the Flash video at the same time. This no longer happens. (N.B. Security Update 2007-009 1.1 requires both a restart and a permission repair.)
If you get problems with viewing video on a website try moving this file to your Desktop:
Hard drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
and then restarting Safari. If all now works, you can trash that file.
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
