What shall i buy MBA or MBP for 4years

recently the macbook air has been updated and i was wanting a latop that will last me for 4 years (my old intel core 2 duo lasted for 3 years).
the following specs that i am configuring for macbook air 13" is, 1.8Ghz i7, 4GB RAM, 256GB flash storage
the following specs that i am configuring for macbook pro 13" is, 2.7Ghz i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD
the only difference i find is the MBA is undervolted, Hi-Resolution 1440x900, faster SSD
the difference i find in the MBP is HD camera and more ports including SuperDrive
please help me choose the correct one because i want a notebook that will last me for 4 years.
money is no issue since i have already got spare 4GB RAM and 256GB SSD

While I love my Air, and believe such a machine could easily last 4 years, I suspect that you probably want the Pro. Why? Well, because you can upgrade it if you need to.
You don't say what you're going to be doing on this computer. I knew, when I got my 11" Air, that even in four years I'd probably wouldn't need a larger hard drive or more RAM. I knew this because over the years I've simplified my life and I'm not putting everything on my computer the way I used to; I delete more stuff, and keep big files on an external drive. Except for upgrades, I don't put on new programs, etc. I also knew that I'd be doing more traveling and needed lighter and slimmer--so, looking to the future, an Air was right for me.
But if you're not doing that, if it looks like in four years you'll need something to handle bigger programs and keep plenty of data at your fingertips, then you want the Pro, for sure. Because even if you don't get enough now, you can upgrade it later, have it meet your growing and changing needs. You can't do that with the Air. What you get now is what you'll have four years later, whether or not you feel it's gotten too slow or too small for you needs. That's perhaps the biggest and most important difference if you're looking at these computer long-term: You cannot upgrade that Air. What you buy now is what you have for its lifetime.
The Pro can grow and change with your needs over its lifetime. So, I'd recommend the Pro...unless, of course, you are totally in love with the Air. I always say to default on what you love, as you know you'll be happiest on that

  • Suitability of MBA and MBP for FCPX ...

    Hi there,
i am going to purchase either a 13" Macbook Air or Macbook Pro & plan to use FCPX on it.
the problem is I discovered the following:-
    a) the anount of RAM is so low as compared to my iMac whic has 32gb RAM.
    b) i always read that it is better to get a dedicated video RAM but most of the latest MBA and MBP only comes with on board video RAM.
    c) the HDD though is a flashed based but is so small, start from only 128gb. Could it be that Apple wants us to buy an external HDD  ?
    cheers & thanks

… But for me, what is important is that when I am editing on the timeline, I hate it when it becomes slow. Sometimes even the beach balls appear.
So in my case, better to have a fast processor or a bigger RAM ?
I have never seen a beachball using FCPX (see my specs: I'm on the very low end of hardware).
(I've seen crashes … it's not all pink here )
Aside 'no background rendering' … or manual initiated rendering (to see complex compos in real-time…) :
Imho, it's all about 'delivery': put each stream on its own 'platter' = no beach balling, no stutter
And with stream I don't mean the source(s), but what you see on screen:
in case, you do pic-in-pic, compounds, MultiCam, you see 2/several streams - then, I recommend 2/several drives …
    to over-exaggerate:
when you put the sources of a 4x camera MultiCam on 4 different drives ==> no stutter, no beach balling at all, even on antique, underpowered systems… ok, that's over-the-top, my several external, simple usb3 drives deliver each 2-3 fullHD streams flawless ...
best practice is it anyhow to separate Events from app/OS/cache…
I would suggest a min. of 16GB Ram.
The number-crunching (rendering) is mostly done on GPU, not CPU.
Last, silly comment: benchmark tests test benchmarks!
Means: FCPX + MacOS + Apple hardware sums up 'higher' than expected.
Don't be too focussed on GHz and stuff, no -user is interested in …

  • Shall I buy a 3D television for live performances???

Couple of day back I got an idea to buy a 3d TV for watching live performances; at times its bit hard to book the tickets on time and hence, we missed out many of the live concert due to the unavailability of tickets. In near future we are planning to join few of the concerts listed below:
    1. GMA concert series.
    2. 2012 Toyota concert series
How many of you would advise me to buy 3D TV for doing the same? I thought as per the advertising statements if we bought any good 3d TV we could feel our programs as real, isn’t?

I prefer my LG passive 3d TV for watching sports as live and you want it for live concerts then again it’s a similar thought like mine. Take some demos of LG LM series TV. They offer exceedingly bright PQ with high refresh rate with almost negligible input lag. These models have sound zooming feature too which will make you feel your concerts as good as live, you would feel like as if a singer is performing right in front of you. I have experienced LGs sound zooming feature and it was breathtaking!
Has LG fixed the color accuracy issues on their LM series yet? The OOTB presets on this series are way off.  Both the 7600 and the 9600 seem to have the same problem:

Let's not even get into the wishy washy blacks and the lovely halo effect on the 9600 caused by the low number of LED in the back.

  • MBA or MBP for me?

I'm planning to get the MBA. But what do you guys think? I went to Apple store like 7 times already to check both of them out! I'll be using it as my MAIN MACHINE. I'll use it for
-browsing web (a lot) for Facebook, YouTube, email, twitter, sports
-light photo editing (nothing like the pros only as a hobby)
-about 150 music and 250 photos
    -maybe Xcode and other apps
-I WANT IT TO LAST FOR ATLEAST 4 years
-I want to be able to bring it to my friends house, school (high), and other places
What do you guys think? Tell me which model of which machine I should get (ex. 128GB, 4GB ram, MBA)
    Thanks!

MBA is a secondary computer, not a Main computer.
    So get the MBP.

  • MBA vs MBP for engineering use

    Hi,
I'm planning to buy either a MacBook air or MacBook pro but am little confused as which way to go. I'm an engineer and so will be using VMware for heavy engineering softwares like Xilinx, modelsim and orcad. So im looking for help from someone with experience in this regard
    Thanks

While the Macbook Air & MacBook Pro are offered both with models that have i5 and i7 processors. The Air offers dual core processors 1.6 Ghz i5 or a dual core 1.7Ghz i7. The MBP 13 base offers core i5 at 2.4 Ghz, or a dual core 2.8 Ghz i7. Slightly faster then the MacBook Air. If you go up to a 15-Inch Macbook Pro you get even more power with ether 2.2 Quad Core i7 or a 2.4 Quad Core i7. Those extra cores give you lots more power when plugged in, and it will be a noticable boost in VM. thats twice as many cores as the  MacBook Air.
The Macbook Air and the 13-Inch Macbook Pro have the same Advanced Intel HD Graphics 3000. But the 15-inch MacBook Pro also has a AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB GDDR5, or a AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 1GB GDDR5. Having the Radeon graphics card means the computer has lots of 3D rendeirng power! if your using cad this is a great benifit for the 3D models you may be working on. Or even just running Mac OS X and Windows 7 at the same time. (it's also nice for gaming)
The Macbook Pros also offer more storage space. the 13-Inch & 15-Inch base models of the MacBook Pro has twice the space as the top end MacBook Air. Running Dual OS takes up allot of space. So having the additonal space is going to be really handy.
Plus your getting extra ports. A built-in super drive will make it easier to install window 7 or any other disk based software.
if it was me, and I was using the computer for enginering I would be looking at a 15-Inch MacBook Pro because of the quad core, and Radion Graphics.
Also, you would benfit from finding out the exact software you want to run; and exactly what are the requirements to run it. That way you can make sure you get the right graphic cards, and more then enough ram. Also keep in mind if you want to run windows in VM. your going to need extra ram. because mac OS X is going to want ram too.

  • I'm a graphic designer. What shall I buy?

I am a graphic designer, Mac has been my bread n butter since 1989. I do page layout (ID), Illustrator work (logos, maps) and use Photoshop for photo retouch and manipulations.
Currently own a PPC G5 Dual 2 GHz which is one of the last ones built October 2005, before the Intel chip was integrated. So it's now over 6 years old, still on Tiger (4.11).  I have 5 Gig Ram which have been working well for me.
I also have a really great 26" display, a Planar PX2611W, which is about 5 or 6 years old, but still kicking a$$... I appreciate the fact it has a totally matte finish, no glare like the iMac display.... But hey, we all get old, and eventually die, right?
SO I NEED TO MAKE A DECISION, what should I invest in, a 27" iMac, or a Mac Pro (and keep my 5-6 year old Planar?) which is double the price. I have a feeling that with my needs, not doing any animations, or video work, or even music, the Mac Pro is an over-kill.... Beside the fact money is an issue also, these days, duh...
    What do you guys suggest?
    ...... Thanks!

I was in the exact same situation as mynameismyname, using the exact same G5. I love the computer and have used it for graphic design, publishing, and video/film production. I have a 20" Cinema Display and a 22" wide-format ViewSonic monitor. I decided it was time to upgrade because I'm going to be working on several feature films, so I did extensive research about performance, cost, upgradability, OS possibilities, etc. Because I have numerous programs that will NOT run in Lion, I purchased a refurbished 27" iMac that was released in May 2011 so I could downgrade to Snow Leopard (it was delivered with Lion loaded on it). I saved almost $300 by going with a refurb directly from Apple, but if that's the way you want to go, you might be able to find one with Snow Leopard loaded on it. I had to buy a SL disc from Apple, but it was only $29.95. I also bought two Thunderbolt-to-DVI adapters so I can also use my monitors. I also needed a Firewire 400 to 800 cable. Even with the cable, adapters, and SL, it was less than an additional $100.
The iMac, so far, screams. I haven't loaded al my programs on it yet, so I'm not sure how fast Photoshop and Final Cut will actually run, but so far I love it. Plus, if you use it for business, you can probably justify the much-lower-than-a-MacPro cost even if Apple stops production/support of Mac in the next few years.
I agree that there are signs that Apple might be pulling back on the Mac, such as the "dumbing down" of Final Cut X. I hope we're wrong...
    Good luck!

  • Newest MBA or MBP for large applications at the same time?

Love the newest MBA and really want it - the reviews are so fantastic - but I am simply afraid of making the same mistake I've made in the past and ordering the less powerful machine. I currently have a Dell and an HP, and neither will allow me to use photoshop CS5 BY ITSELF with any efficiency, let alone while open with other applications such as internet explorer. The quality of webcam conversations with Skype is also very poor, despite a very fast internet connection. I am fed up and converting to Mac, just not sure which one to get - but I need it to be the best for PS and Skype. Advice from those who have used the newest MBA? Thanks!

Ferrell, I have done what you suggested. I clicked onto the Spaces icon in the upper control panel and assigned spaces to six apps: Mail, Safari, iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, and iWeb.
The problem is that if I am one app and I want to put something into that app, then the minute my mouse cursor goes to get that other thing, the original application into which I want the thing put GETS WHOOSHED OFF THE DESKTOP. What I want is for the original app to remain open whilst I go to retrieve a file or folder, and stay open while I put that thing into the original app.
How does one turn off Spaces? I don't mean to delete all the names from the settings.I mean, just turn it off for a while so I can do something which requires for two apps to be open at the same time????

  • Standard HW question, what shall I buy?

Two years ago I bought a new PC for Premiere Pro after I got a lot of very good advice here http://forums.adobe.com/message/3432674#3432674.  And that new system worked perfect, I never had any problem with a slow system so many THANKS to Harm, Christ and others.
After the first year I did not do much video editing but much more Lightroom, Photoshop, HDR in Photomatix, a lot of filters in PS etc. And my system still worked perfect even if I sometimes made panoramas from 15 RAW photos (sets of 3 x 5 photos)  that I worked with in Photomatix and then put them together in Photoshop to panoramas that were 500 - 800MB). And I could and can have all my programs up at the same time, no problems. So that is wonderful.
The only problem I have had is that I bought 2 WD My Book for backup and they have caused a lot of problems. I did not ask the forum about them, just found out I needed BU and they were there in the shop. No, these external discs with no fans are not working good and if they are here in Thailand where we often have temperatures between 35C and 40C then they stop working. If I had asked this Forum first I probably had bought something else.
Now to my question. My daughter in Sweden is going to buy a new system and she will also work mostly in Lightroom and Photoshop, and I have adviced her to buy something like this:
    The budget is max 3000US.
Case: Cooler Master HAF X RC-942-KKN1 Full Tower Case
Powersupply:   Cooler Master 1000w Silent Pro M1000
Extra fans 2 pcs 200 mm
Motherboard  ? Is ASUS Rampage III Extreme still a good choice ?
    Processor    i7  something  like Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz still good ?
SSD   for OS and programs ? or just a normal 500GB drive ?
    3 or 4  WD Black Caviar 2TB
    DVD  read and write
Videocard  If you don't do video editing, is the Videocard that important ?
    Memory 16 GB
2 x 20-25" monitors Someone know  a good quality but not too expensive?
    UPS 1100W
Yes, it is almost a copy of my system but that has worked very well for me. But I am not up to date what has happened the last 2 years.
Everyone is talking NAS and DAS, is that an alternative here to have a smaller case and then a NAS box beside?
And reading about RAID here in the forum, I understand that with just 3 - 4 drives you should not choose that.
    And what system for Backup?
If someone has some good advice here I will be very happy!
    Thanks in advance!

(yes, there is no Hardware forum for Photoshop Lightroom so that is why I address the experise here!)

Did you know that Logistics and Video Editing are very similar?
Logistics: The detailed coordination of a large and complex operation.
Well, video editing is the same.
It requires the detailed coordination of:
    ⦁    Importing source material
⦁    Editing the source material, applying transitions and effects
    ⦁    Exporting the final results
Pretty simple, up to now isn't it? So what is this all about?
Hang on for a moment and I'll try to explain.
First we have to make a detour to a very popular nightclub, which attracts lots of people every day. What is the main profit generating part of a successful nightclub? Correct, it is the bar. It is the Common Profit Unit, the CPU. The greater the efficiency, the less beer is lost on draughts, the more accurate  the fill rate of a glass is, the capacity of the cellar installation, the speed with which one can fill orders,  they all directly influence the bottom line. And it helps quite a bit if the bar, CPU has a Sustainable Service Entry (SSE) close by in order to restock the bar.
Of course, it makes a huge difference how the dance floor, the music, the lighting and audio-visual effects are used, because that determines how people percieve this nightclub. If the dance floor is too small it will be detrimental to business, if it is too big, people will feel abandoned, if the music does not sound good it will hamper business, because people will leave earlier, instead of ordering another drink. This is the General Public Unit, or GPU.
The floorplan is of course critical for the operation of this nightclub. If people have to walk great distances to get  from the dance floor (GPU) to the bar (CPU) for orders, if the physical space limits the numbers of visitors, that all has a negative effect on the bottom line. It always boils down to More Entries, More Orders and Reduced Yawns, in short MEMORY.
But first you have to get the customers in and keep them inside as long as possible. All these customers waiting to get into the nightclub are your Dear And Trusted Accounts, your DATA. They form a long waiting line in front of the door, where a doorman arranges Sequentially Allowed Turnstyle Access (SATA).  Obviously, the more doors you have for access, the shorter the waiting lines and the faster your customers, DATA can reach the bar, CPU to order a drink and then mingle among the other guests. MEMORY.
However, people come to the nightclub in order to have a relaxing and enjoyable evening, so from time to time they want to use Dedicated In-house Seating Comfort, DISC to get their breadth after a long dance, enjoy their drinks in comfort and wait for the next piece of nice music to dance again.  With obesitas rampant, the seats, DISC, need to be large and roomy, not small portable seats that offer no comfort at all. Now, that nightclub offers a Complete Area for Serious Enjoyment, CASE, and the bigger the area, the more room there is for different seating places, DISCS.
If the clientele often comprises VIP's and celebrities that require special attention and service, it migh be a good idea to have a Reserved Area with Immaculate Decorum, RAID, to cater for these special guests.
Now, the thing to keep in mind for a nightclub to be successful and profitable, they have to keep things in balance, keep things in perspective and carefully consider what logistical requirements there are, depending on the location and clientele.
If the club is located in a small county in a rural area, the demands are far different than for a club at the corner of 48th St. and 5th Avenue in NY. Different crowds of people, different numbers of VIP's and celebrities, different square foot prices for the size of the club, different requirements for the bar, different drinking habits, beer versus cocktails, different wine tastes and different prices for drinks, different audio-visual requirements, different kind of music and different seating arrangements.
There is not a single recipe to make the nightclub successful and profitable, but with some careful analysis and common sense, it is not very hard to come up with the  correct business plan for this club.
So where is the similarity with video editing? All over the place...
With some imagination - and we are all creative people around here - you can easily recognize the similarities between the logistics of a nightclub and a NLE system for editing.
    Sven,
Sorry for the long-winded introduction, but I hope this helps to explain there is not one road leading to Rome, even though the Via Appia is the preferred one.
With your budget you should no longer look at the now outdated i7-950 or 1366 platform. In the past two years things have moved on considerably. With the current state of affairs, I suggest looking at:
    Intel X79, LGA 2011 platform
    i7-3930K CPU
    32+ GB memory
Samsung 840 Pro 128 GB SSD for OS & programs & pagefile
nVidia GTX 650 TI Boost or 660 Ti video card
The rest of your disk setup looks OK.

All your other questions have been answered repeatedly, so I suggest you take some time to read the FAQ section and some recent posts.

  • Shall i buy anti virus software for my MAC pro lion

Do I need to install anti-virus software for my Mac pro?

You do not need any anti-virus for a Mac.
Do not download any software from the web to protect your Mac.
Apple releases updates that will offer all the protection a Mac needs.
    Keep the software updated.
Many in this community use ClamXav and recommend using it.
    Best.

  • MBA vs MBP

Hi everyone. I'm wondering which one to buy MBA or MBP. The things i want to know for each -
1 How hot can they get?
2 How well they perform on heavy load ( photoshop, games, flash etc.) and compared to each other
3 Is there a big difference between 11" and 13" MBA? Or is it enough 11" or rather you should just add those 200 and get a better one?
I really like that air is light, probably wouldn't hurt when using it on my laps for hours.
That's pretty much it. Thanks in advance.

I had an MBP 13" 2008 and now have an MBA 11". I can't speak for the present MBP's, but I did notice that now and then my 2008 MBP would get warm under the left-hand side of the keys there. Never hot. Believe, me, I've had laptops that got too hot to use, and the MBP, while it got a little warm, was never, ever so bad.
So far, my little 11", doing all the things my MBP 13" used to do, hasn't gotten warm once. Betting that they improved on the current MBP's, I'd say you don't have to worry about heat unless you're really putting them to work. The aluminum bodies are remarkably cool and work very well.
The difference between 11" and 13" MBA is this:
    (1) Obviously, smaller screen real estate. That's up to you. I have no problem with this, but some people want more room just to see things wider and/or have more windows open across a screen.
    (2) Battery-- 11" gets 5 hours (six sometimes), 13" gets a whopping 10 hours. MBP 13" by the by, gets around 7 hours.
    (3) SSD--11" max is 128G, 13" max is 256.
Just in case it matters to you:
    * Backlit keyboard--only on MBP not on the AIrs (some people find this a deal breaker)
    * Lock slot--only on the MBP not on the Airs. This is my one issue with the Airs. There is an odd sort of device on sale for them now by which one can lock them to the table, but no slot in the computer. Except in places I really trust, I never leave my little 11" out on a table. If I'm at a coffee place and need to get more coffee, I close it up and take it with me. it's just too easy for someone to snatch it. I am thinking of getting the new weird lock thing for it. My old MBP, however, had the slot and I could lock it to the table.
    Here's some things to consider:
    (1) MBA can't be upgraded. So whatever you get, that's what you get. If you get 2G RAM you're stuck with that, you can't make it 4G RAM--which is why the advice to go for 4G is a good one. With the MBP you can upgrade.
    (2) Disk Drive--obviously, MBA doesn't have one, MBP does.
    (3) MBA comes with SSD standard. MBP doesn't and if you want it you'll have to pay a lot more. But you can have it with the MBP if you want it. I gotta tell you, now that I've got it, I'm spoilt. I won't ever go back
In the end, the best way to decide is, I think, twofold. First, which is more important to you, power or portability. Because portability is where you get the real magic of the Airs. Their lightness (you'd be surprised at how much of a difference going down from almost 6 pounds to 2 or 3 makes), slimness, even the speed of getting them in and out of carrier bags is beyond compare. Power and storage is where the MBP excels. Second, if you haven't yet, you should go to a store and check both out. I'm a great believer in going for the computer that calls your name, that you fall in love with. If an MBA is what you fall in love with, you can make it work even if it doesn't have all you think you want.
    Hope that helps!

  • I5 MBP with retina or i7 MBP for iOS development

I'm a beginner iOS developer. I need to upgrade my Mac (mid 2009 model) as it becomes so slow since upgrading to lion and even slower with mountain lion
I'm going to use the new Mac for Xcode and photoshop.
My question here. Shall I buy an i5 MBP with retina display or an i7 MBP (non retina) as both are same price.
The think the only difference (other than the display and is the slim body) is the HDMI port in the retina model and DVD drive in the non-retina model
I live outside the US and my friend is going to buy it for in two weeks and I won't be able to return it if I didn't like it so please choose carefully
    Thank you in advance

Doing some additonal web research I found the following site.  Using that data, I was able to pull the Geekbench performance results my current MBP (late 2011) and the two MBP's being considered.  Below is a cut & paste of the information I compiled in a spreadsheet.
    http://browser.primatelabs.com/mac-benchmarks
Next question -- does the benchmarks take into account the speed difference of the HDD vs SDD drives?  As you can see, there is very minimal performance difference to go non-retina to a retina model.  On average a 6.64% performance increase for a 28.60% price increase.
Those percentages might change if the benchmark tests don't include hard drive speeds.  But as it stands, if we attribute 6.64% of the costs difference to performance since that is how much increase you get going rMBP vs MBP, then there is an approximate 22% premium (or $220) for the retina display and more compact design (along with all the various changes that go w/ retina -- no user upgradeability, addition of HDMI port, lack of optical drive, firewire and ethernet, etc).  If you plan on buying an external super-drive ($79) the premium crawls to near 30% more.

If you're not comfortable with English, it may be best to post in your native language. Others can use automatic translation, if necessary, to help them understand you. They may reply in their native language, and then you can do the same to understand them.

Give details of the problem. A statement such as "it doesn't work" conveys no information. If it did work, you wouldn't be here. Instead, you should post something like this: "I did A; I was expecting B; but I got C instead." Include the complete text of any error messages you saw and where you saw them: in an application window, a CrashReporter window, a log, or whatever. Also include the steps you’ve taken yourself, if any, to try to resolve the issue. If the problem is of recent origin, did you make any changes to your setup just before you first noticed it? Is the problem reproducible or intermittent? That is, does it always manifest itself when you take a certain action, or only at unpredictable times?
Before posting, ask yourself whether it’s likely that you are the the only person ever to have had this problem. If not, search the discussions for answered questions similar to yours. If you found any pertinent information, but it didn't help, include details.

  • 15" vs 17" MBP for international travel

    ahhh.... decision time again...
Ready to buy a new MBP for a month long shoot in China. I already have a desktop system with a large display, so this will not be my main Aperture system at home.
Seems like the 15" is the best option on account of the LED screen, lighter weight, smaller size, better battery life. But for some bizarre reason Aperture is NOT loaded on any of the demo units at the two Apple stores in NYC (the Aperture library is on the machines, but not the application itself...weird) so I havent been able to really get a feel for it compared to the 17"
Of course more screen real estate is always nice, but is the 17" worth the extra size, weight, decreased battery time, etc? Trying to keep my kit down to the minimum...
    G5 Dual2.0 (PCI-X), 4.5GB RAM, 2TB SATA RAID, 23" Cinema Display + PB G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I've had Titanium 15"s for years, then a MBP17 for the last year. Because I want the 4 gigs of RAM I'll change my mac in august. I'll get the 15.
the 17 inch is too large for public space use (airplane, train mostly) and weights a bit too much for my taste.
If I were in your situation I'll get a 15 and a screen calibrator, and find a way to rent or borrow an external LCD in china, calibrate it and use that as your working screen....
..i'm saying this because laptop screens are a bit stretched for critical work... hope this helps
