What should I back up?

iLife arrived today and I installed all of the apps. What files should I back up on my computer before I open iWeb? Can I do this by just duplicating them or should I have done it from iWeb 06?
I want to make sure I have good backups, based on the difficulties people are reporting on this forum!

All the files required for a fresh copy of iWeb 06 to open up your sites, still ready to edit (if all goes wrong with 08) are contained in a folder under your user area. Go to youe 'Home' > Library > Application Support > iWeb> and in there is a file called 'Domain' This is the file that contains all the stuff from your current sites.
From what I have read, the best option seems to be to MOVE ithe Domains file to a new safe location. Then ALSO make a COPY for extra safety! Then after installing iWeb 08. just start a new site and have a fiddle around to see whats going on, THEN quit it and use the 'open exisiting site' option (which I'm guessing you get by holding the 'alt' key as you open the application) - but may be similar to imovie where it just asks you.
This will then import your old site, and hopefully not mess too much up, but it looks like it is likely to naff it up good and proper - so might be worth waiting a week or 2 to see what apple come up with!
If it does knacker the sites REMEMBER you have you backup copy but DO NOT just start fiddling with that one, make a NEW COPY and always keep one nice and safe - just incase you have to go back to using 06 version.

  • I'm ready for 10.5 - what should I back up for a clean install?

    Hello
I'm ready to install my newly-purchased 10.5 DVD.
I want to do a clean install. What should I back up before I do so in order to insure that nothing is lost?
I have already copied my entire user folder (except for the items that were permissions locked) to an external 500GB firewire. What else should I copy and how?
    Thanks,
    -----------S

OK, your user folder is backed up. That's a good start.
Generally what I do is take the current hard drive out of the computer, and put in a blank one (preferably a bigger drive too!).
Leopard's kind of an iffy upgrade, so what I'd do is this:
    1) Make a clean install of TIGER. Run the updates.
    2) Install all applications using a new user called "Administrator"—I mean anything you can think of....MacTheRipper, VLC, etc. Everything. Update all the apps.
3a) Copy over your user folder into the Users folder in the root of the drive. Go to Accounts in the System Preferences, and click on the + sign beneath the Users, and add a user with the same name and type in the same name you used on your old build. Enter the same short name, password, etc. It will give you the option to restore that user account if it is seen there.
    OR
3b) Create a new user account, and start up in that user account. Copy pictures, music, documents, and desktop from the old user to their respective folders in the new location. DO NOT START UP MAIL, ADDRESS BOOK, or iCAL BEFORE THIS! Go to your User account's library. Move Mail & Safari from the old user library to the new one. Go to Application Support, and move over the files for Address Book and iCal (Yahoo Messenger, Skype, and Firefox are other ones to move if you have them in there). Go back to the User Library, and move over com.apple plists (from Preferences) for Addressbook, iChat, iCal, Mail, Safari. Try each of those applications to make sure the data transferred.
    4) Repair Permissions.
Now you have a clean build of TIGER. SuperDuper it so you have a bootable backup of your new system on an empty firewire drive.
    5) Update from Tiger to Panther. Play with it for a while. See how you like it. If you like it, keep it and move on from there. If you don't, you have a clean build of Tiger to use. I'm reverting back to Tiger because Panther is kind of slow on my machine, and it offers few real advantages. It's worth sticking to Tiger for me until I get through my current work cycle and hope Apple has fixed a few issues by then.
    Good luck.

  • Selling iBook before I have replacement - what should I back up?

I am selling my iBook G4 so I can buy a newer one. Completing sale before new one arrives. What should I back up so I can transfer as much of my data (e.g. online usernames and passwords, etc.) before I wipe it clean? I have an external hard drive with plenty of space to hold it, I'm just not sure what to back up other than the obvious music, photo and document folders. Any help much appreciated. thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If your external HDD is a Firewire drive, and if it is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) you can use SuperDuper to make a bootable clone of your entire HDD. This will preserve everything on your internal HDD exactly the way it is now.
After you have cloned your HDD, and you are sure the clone works, zero all data on your internal HDD, install Tiger and shut down before the setting up. When the new owner opens it, the set up wizard will lead them through the set up process. Be sure to include all the discs that came with your computer to the new owner.
Please do not hesitate to post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Getting new HD; what should I back up?

    Hi all,
My HD in my iBook is making some concerning sounds so I before death appears I am going to replace the HD. The question is in addition to the User directories, what else should I back up. I have the original installation CDs for Apps so I can install the apps from those.
Thanks so much for any help and advice.
    Ed

You don't have to make a bootable "clone" copy of your hard drive. That's a convenient way to do it, but certainly not the only way. I'm assuming you can also connect to that Buffalo drive using USB.
Start up from your Mac OS X Installation CD. From the Installer menu, run Disk Utility. Select the internal drive on side bar. From the menu, select File > New > Disk Image from {name of internal drive}. Save the disk image file to the Buffalo drive which is connected by USB.
Once the process completes, restart normally. Find that disk image file and double-click on it to mount it on your Desktop. Inspect it to make sure it looks good, especially your user directory where your personal files are located. Now, you have a copy of everything. Even if you decide to reinstall the OS and apps, it's good to have everything.
If you want to restore from your backup... After you install the new drive, start up from the Mac OS X Installation Disk, and run Disk Utility. Select the new drive on the sidebar. First, go to the Partition tab to format it, selecting Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format type. After formatting is completed, go to the Restore tab. At this point, connect the Buffalo drive by USB if not already connected. Find that disk image as the Source. Drag the new drive's one partition (under the drive) from the sidebar to the Destination field. Click Restore.

  • What should I back up before 9.2.2 to Tiger 10.4.6 upgrade?

My wife's 10-1999 Blueberry iMac DV is slated for an upgrade to Tiger 10.4.6. It's at the Mac OS 9.2.2 level. Her email client is Netscape Messenger 4.7 (no kidding!) and her preferred browser is IE 5.X (the latest Mac version). Since I'm not a Mac expert, I'm hesitant to start the upgrade until I know what I should back up. Can someone give me a brief list of the the major items to back up?
    Thanks,

Hi tcpasley and welcome to Apple Discussions!
You may get more help posting this in the Tiger Installation and Setup Forum People there will be able to offer some good upgrade strategies.
(Classic is OS9 under emulation within OSX, not OS9 itself.)
Before you upgrade you should look at the hardware requirements for Tiger. You need much RAM and much disk space.
Can't comment on backing up emails, but I fear that direct conversion from Messenger to Mail 2 is not an option.

  • Need to re-install Lion due to disk errors. What should I back up first?

I am very new to Mac. I installed Lion about a month ago, and I have had periodic hangups ever since. Today, I did a disk verify, it found errors, so I attempted to repair from boot. That failed too, and message was that I need to remove any data I can and reinstall. Sigh.
I have a Time Machine backup from about a week ago. Should I run a new backup, or will that just capture the error that is requiring the reformat?
Should I just capture the files from the past week, and restore from the TM from a week ago?
Anyone have any advice? I haven't been on Mac long enought to even know what files I need to make sure I move across before doing a clean install.

I appreciate the help, but I am not quite following you.  You're saying, instead of doing a fresh TM backup, run CCC to a different drive. Then do what's necessary to get the Mac drive fixed, and reload everything form the CCC disk?
Why not just do that with TM? I'm sorry to sound obtuse, but this stuff is new to me. I really appreciate the help.
I currently have access to everything, I just want to do what's needed before that changes, if the HD is failing.
    Thanks!

  • HT5262 What should I back up on iCloud?

I'm confused, what can I turn off that doesn't really need to be on my iCloud.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You can backup the iPad on your computer instead of iCloud if you prefer. If you turn off iCloud backup, settings will still be synced between devices, the only difference is that the iPad won't backup on iCloud

You need to talk with the tax authorities in the countries to which you traveled and that of your home country. We are all end-users liek you and not Apple agents.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • When I get to the login page on my macbook, I type in my password and it starts to load, but then the screen turns blue and it goes back to the login. What should I do?

I was having some problems with my mac, safari and itunes was freezing alot. I have to force shutdown and when I tried to start up again i get to the login page, type in my password and it starts to load, but then the screen turns blue for a few seconds and it goes back to the log in screen. What should I do?
    Please Help!!

    Somewhat similar problem:
Put in the password, hit enter, the screen goes blue for half a second, then goes back to login screen and carries on logging in as usual.  Drives me mad.  It doesn't happen with a fresh Lion installation, nor if booted into safe mode.  On the machine in question it also happens to new user accounts.
I've removed all login items, including Startup Items and Launch Demons (pun intended) and Agents, I've compared system login plists with a fresh Lion installation - can't see differences.  I've removed Little Snitch and PeerGuardian (no more third party kexts).
@Carolyn: I've done disk maintenance with DiskUtility and fsck and even DiskWarrior, cleaned caches, etc. etc.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Sorry for trying to hijack the thread (as it's not about Lion), but it seemed dead anyway.
