What should I check before I upgrade

Is there a reliable and complete checklist that is recently published to review prior to upgrading to 10.6?  Certainly most of the issues have been resolved since its first release in light of Lion's release.  I hope to eventually upgrade to Lion as well, if the need or want is there.  I just hope to avoid any headaches in the upgrade.
I have several printers (Canon i9900, HP8750, HP c309a) as well as photography software/plugins that I am most concerned about - but everything in general. I plan to upgrade my CS3 suite after getting to 10.6.  Of course the transition to iCloud from my MobileMe is .... a bit cloudy....
Thanks for any tips or resources in advance.

You can make a hold the option key bootable clone of 10.5 on a external drive, this way in case the 10.6 upgrade doesn't go as expected you can boot off of that, erase the internal drive and reverse clone.
I don't think your going to have much of a problem, because a lot of 10.5 software works just fine in 10.6 beause of Rosetta.
It's Lion that kills Rosetta and all your old programs.
Snow is faster than Leopard too, a nicer OS and likely the best one Apple has ever made. Lion is a control freaks train wreck.

First off you can't get a brand new latest issue Mac any less expensive than perhaps 10% or so off the price you see at the Apple Store online.
Use this site as a clue.
    http://www.appleinsider.com/mac_price_guide/
If your getting a new latest Mac in a sealed box at a lot less than the above link prices without tax, then it's likely stolen.
Now it could be a Early 2011 model Mac, Apple is now on the Late 2011 model Mac's with slight upgrades, so if it's a Early 2011 Mac, then yes you might be able to get it cheaper as a closeout, make sure you buy it at the store with a receipt and everything so it's a legitimate transaction.
If your getting it in a opened box (used), you can check the serial (apple menu> about this mac > more info) here
    http://www.appleserialnumberinfo.com/Desktop/index.php
Main thing is to cover your behind, if you buy stolen merchandise then it's taken away and you lose it and your money, not to mention possibly going to jail if you knew it was stolen.

I am trying to import songs from a CD but it takes more than 15 minutes per song. What should I check?

Do you have error correction turned on?  (iTunes preferences - General - Import settings.)  If so, it will take much longer to copy audio CD's.

  • What should I sell CS4 Master upgrade for?

I very close friend of mine was able to purchase me the new CS5 Master Collection only its the full copy so my CS4 MC Upgrade I only download purchased a year ago is collecting virtual dust.  Since I'm not using the serial I asume I can sell it but for how much?  I'm thinking $500 to $1000.  Any one have a clue?  Thanks!

You should double check the EULA to make sure you are allowed to sell or transfer the license and if you do what the repercussions are.  I
read somewhere that if you transfer a Photoshop license for example, you are not allowed to purchase another version of it.  I am not sure if that was hearsay or not though.

  • What should I do BEFORE formatting?

    Hi,
I'm about to take the long road of formatting my PC soon (it´s starting to show different signs of unhappines).
I have an iPod Touch and iTunes with ~32GB of music, mostly ripped CD:s (my own, paid for, CD:s. I'm that old ) but also some music bought from iTunes store.
How do I, with the least amount of pain, trouble and effort, restore all of my music to the, after formatting, freshly installed system?
In other words, what do I do before formatting, and after, to make everything as easy as possible.
I've had a crash before and then had a loooong journey (no full back-up = ripping CD:s, downloading covers....etc) back to where I was before the crash.
I would like everything in my iTunes library/iPod to be EXACTLY as it is today (I've rearranged music, changed titles and covers and so on...)
I've tried reading on forums (and in the manuals), but I just get confused. I was about to make a back-up on DVD:s, but if I understand things correctly it's not necessary anymore (your device will work as a back-up nowadays?) Some forums seems to suggests only iTunes-bought media will be recovered, not ripped music.... und so weiter.
So folks, I'm trying to be proactive here and listen to your advice on how to do this in a proper way (if such a thing exists) before I make a mess of everything and have to spend days, possibly weeks, restoring my music after formatting.
    Regards
    /Mike

    You're welcome.
I forgot to describe how you can test the backup...
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Click choose, then browse to and open <External>\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. iTunes should open normally and be able to sync your devices as if nothing had changed, but will be referencing the media on the external drive instead of the internal.

  • What should i do before selling my macbook 10.4.8

I am going to give my macbook running verion 10.4 to my nephew.  What should I do to make sure all of my information is gone and he can start out with a frsh machine?

Hi Pamela, 2 ways to go...
      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
    Or...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.

  • What should I check when I get my notebook?

hi, I'm buying my mac book pro in about 2 weeks and I would just like to know what I have to check when I get it.
whine noise? heat issue? (how to check it?)
    any others?
by the way, I have an imac G5 rev. B.
it has a bit of "whine" as well. not sure if it is called whine, but I'm fine with it.
Is whine on the mac book pro very similar?
    thanks!

so as soon as i turn on the computer, I should hear
the whine if there it is there right?
Well, not necessarily. First, if you use something CPU intensive or if it's plugged to power, there is no whine. Second, my MBP started to whine three days later, some started 3 weeks later, some had it right away. It's all chancy I think.
    i know that
some say by dimming the light, you can tell as well,
    are there any others?
If you have the screen the screen buzz (which is unlikely now) you'll hear it at all screen brightness but completely off or at its max. If you ever hear a buzz/whine, you can test by dimming the display: If it goes away, you have a faulty inverter. If the whine/buzz is insensitive to display, you can launch photobooth: if it goes away when photobooth is on, you have the so called "CPU" whine.
as for the heat problem, how do I know if there is
something wrong with it? all mac book pros are hot
    right?
Well, it's true that MBP runs on the hotter side and it's normal that you can't touch sometimes (say when you're playing games) the area above F keys. But if you feel extremely disturbed by the heat to the point you can't rest your hands on it when you're just surfing the web, then you might have a problem. But everybody has different tolerence for heat, so it's hard to ***** it. If you feel that it's ridiculously hot, you can do the resetings, calibrating and the firmware updates, which seem to work for some people.
Hope you'll be a happy MBP owner!!

  • What should i look before buying!?

I'm going to have a look at a g3700mhz_128mo20g tonight and i'm curious about the things you guys might be looking in order to know the ibook is in good shape!?
I know there's not much ram in this ibook but i'm planning on adding a 512mo chip in.I'm also aware of the logic board issue so i know i'm taking a chance. The dead pixels are not an issue here since it doesn't have any...
Any good advices before i make the jump?
    thanks.

    Andre,
Shipping time to Canada may differ, but I live in the US and even with regular shipping, I got my Crucial 256 MB stick for my iBook in two days. If the Kingston memory has a lifetime guarantee then I'd go for it, simply because it's more convenient - but I absolutely love Micron/Crucial memory. I've used it for years in my PC systems and never had a stick go bad on me in the normal course of usage.
As for what to look for in the iBook, ask about maintenance / upgrade records the same as you would a car. I would instinctively pay less for a machine without any records or receipts than I would one that has them, because at least then I know where the machine's been. Has the logic board or any other component ever been replaced? Does the screen have any dead pixels? Is the key travel still acceptable on the keyboard? Does the optical drive read (and write?) discs accurately?
Finally, ask yourself: you have a G4 listed in your signature; if it goes down for whatever reason and have to use the iBook as your main machine, can it suffice until the G4 is repaired/replaced? I'm not trying to push you into buying new instead of used, just warning you to make sure that the computer you're buying is right for your needs.
Good luck, and enjoy the iBook if you decide to buy it! The G3s are fantastic, if not tempermental, travel companions.

  • What should I do before syncing my iPod Touch to another computer?

My old computer died a tragic death (dont ask) so I had to get a new one. I bought some new games and stuff on my new computer but when I try and Sync the newly boughten games from my computer to my Ipod it wont do it. The only way it will Sync them is if I delete all my current games (which I dont want to do since I have like $30 in games on my IPod).
I can see why they wouldnt want people to be able to transfer games from their Ipod to the computer, but why cant i transfer the new games to my IPod.
    Can anyone Help me?

Ipod touch will sync with ONE computer at a time. If you sync to another it will first erase the content from the ipod and replace with content from the new computer. This is the design of the ipod touch.
You should transfer everything from the old computer to the new one, then sync so you do not lose anything.
As your computer is dead, simply use the backup copy of all of your music/pics/docs/etc to load everything onto the new machine, then sync.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from the ipod:
    Without syncing - File>Transfer Purchases

  • What should I do about extra Admin accounts?

    Hi -
While migrating files from my old Mac to new - I created an account and set it as Admin.  After about 24 hours of "migrating" via WiFi I learned that a faster way was via Firewire, so I stopped the migration and started over again.  At this time I created a new Admin account and set the computer up correctly.  So now I have 2 Admin accounts.  I can log in as either but only one has all my files and the other does not.
I know I can delete using "Users and Groups" System Pres but before I delete the one that I don't want to use - what should I check for to make sure I'm not deleting important ID's, Library items, etc??
The Applications folder with all my programs is under the top level "Macintosh HD" so they should still be available to whatever users are left.  Is that correct?
    thanks,
    j2

Just delete the account you don't need. You won't delete any files outside its home folder.

When I click on iPhoto(9.5.1)  i get "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared." but i downloaded the up-grader, used it and it tells me the library can open with the current version... Then when I click on the iphoto again i get the same message "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared."'
    What should I do?

The upgraded is only necessary for libraries created with iPhoto '07 or eearlier.  Just double click the library to open it in iPhoto, and let it upgrade, if it has been created by a newr version.
