I am going to give my macbook running verion 10.4 to my nephew. What should I do to make sure all of my information is gone and he can start out with a frsh machine?

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
   2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
      *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
   3. Click the Erase tab.
   4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
   5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
   6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
Or...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.

What should I do BEFORE formatting?

Hi,
I'm about to take the long road of formatting my PC soon (it´s starting to show different signs of unhappines).
I have an iPod Touch and iTunes with ~32GB of music, mostly ripped CD:s (my own, paid for, CD:s. I'm that old ) but also some music bought from iTunes store.
How do I, with the least amount of pain, trouble and effort, restore all of my music to the, after formatting, freshly installed system?
In other words, what do I do before formatting, and after, to make everything as easy as possible.
I've had a crash before and then had a loooong journey (no full back-up = ripping CD:s, downloading covers....etc) back to where I was before the crash.
I would like everything in my iTunes library/iPod to be EXACTLY as it is today (I've rearranged music, changed titles and covers and so on...)
I've tried reading on forums (and in the manuals), but I just get confused. I was about to make a back-up on DVD:s, but if I understand things correctly it's not necessary anymore (your device will work as a back-up nowadays?) Some forums seems to suggests only iTunes-bought media will be recovered, not ripped music.... und so weiter.
So folks, I'm trying to be proactive here and listen to your advice on how to do this in a proper way (if such a thing exists) before I make a mess of everything and have to spend days, possibly weeks, restoring my music after formatting.

I forgot to describe how you can test the backup...
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Click choose, then browse to and open <External>\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. iTunes should open normally and be able to sync your devices as if nothing had changed, but will be referencing the media on the external drive instead of the internal.

What programs to uninstall before starting new Macbook

Seems the Macbook comes with bloatware like most PCs except Asus, what stuff ca be safely removed before first use so as to give equivalent of a clean install with no excess and also maximsize disc space. Please advise as anytime I have tried this on Windows PCs I have encountered problems mainly form missing DLs whatever these are..

I personally do an "erase and install" when I receive a new computer (that goes for both Macs and PC). One of the reasons, which applies to your question, is that even though you can remove appications/additions/languages later, the system still think they are installed so will update them when updates become available. By doing a clean installation you not only get to choose what you want to have installed you avoid any updates.

The only way to securely remove all your personal data is to zero out the hard drive then install a fresh copy of OS X. Provide the installers discs for any software you are providing with the computer. You should provide all the original discs, serial numbers, etc. The new owner can then install the software and personalize it themselves.
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation. At the end of the installation will be the Restart screen. Do not restart the computer. Instead just shutdown. When the new owner boots up the computer they will begin with the Setup Assistant jus like the computer was new out of the box.

I know there's not much ram in this ibook but i'm planning on adding a 512mo chip in.I'm also aware of the logic board issue so i know i'm taking a chance. The dead pixels are not an issue here since it doesn't have any...

Shipping time to Canada may differ, but I live in the US and even with regular shipping, I got my Crucial 256 MB stick for my iBook in two days. If the Kingston memory has a lifetime guarantee then I'd go for it, simply because it's more convenient - but I absolutely love Micron/Crucial memory. I've used it for years in my PC systems and never had a stick go bad on me in the normal course of usage.
As for what to look for in the iBook, ask about maintenance / upgrade records the same as you would a car. I would instinctively pay less for a machine without any records or receipts than I would one that has them, because at least then I know where the machine's been. Has the logic board or any other component ever been replaced? Does the screen have any dead pixels? Is the key travel still acceptable on the keyboard? Does the optical drive read (and write?) discs accurately?
Finally, ask yourself: you have a G4 listed in your signature; if it goes down for whatever reason and have to use the iBook as your main machine, can it suffice until the G4 is repaired/replaced? I'm not trying to push you into buying new instead of used, just warning you to make sure that the computer you're buying is right for your needs.
Good luck, and enjoy the iBook if you decide to buy it! The G3s are fantastic, if not tempermental, travel companions.

What directories to delete before selling iMac

I will be passing on my iMac to a family member but don't want to delete all the applications I have on it. I DO, however, want to delete any personal info/data. Can someone tell me which files/directories I should delete to make sure the system is as clean as it can be without actually doing a reformat?

Ideally you should create a new admin user account for the person to whom you are giving the computer, then log into that account and delete yours.
Note that any software included on the computer that is commercial or shareware is subject to license restrictions that limit their installation to one CPU at a time. If you keep the original software and any installation discs and registration numbers to install on another computer, then you are violating the software license. If you leave the software on the computer then you must give all discs and registrations to the new owner, and cannot install the software on your computer.

What should I do before syncing my iPod Touch to another computer?

My old computer died a tragic death (dont ask) so I had to get a new one. I bought some new games and stuff on my new computer but when I try and Sync the newly boughten games from my computer to my Ipod it wont do it. The only way it will Sync them is if I delete all my current games (which I dont want to do since I have like $30 in games on my IPod).
I can see why they wouldnt want people to be able to transfer games from their Ipod to the computer, but why cant i transfer the new games to my IPod.

Ipod touch will sync with ONE computer at a time. If you sync to another it will first erase the content from the ipod and replace with content from the new computer. This is the design of the ipod touch.
You should transfer everything from the old computer to the new one, then sync so you do not lose anything.
As your computer is dead, simply use the backup copy of all of your music/pics/docs/etc to load everything onto the new machine, then sync.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from the ipod:

What should I check before I upgrade

Is there a reliable and complete checklist that is recently published to review prior to upgrading to 10.6? Certainly most of the issues have been resolved since its first release in light of Lion's release. I hope to eventually upgrade to Lion as well, if the need or want is there. I just hope to avoid any headaches in the upgrade.
I have several printers (Canon i9900, HP8750, HP c309a) as well as photography software/plugins that I am most concerned about - but everything in general. I plan to upgrade my CS3 suite after getting to 10.6. Of course the transition to iCloud from my MobileMe is .... a bit cloudy....

You can make a hold the option key bootable clone of 10.5 on a external drive, this way in case the 10.6 upgrade doesn't go as expected you can boot off of that, erase the internal drive and reverse clone.
I don't think your going to have much of a problem, because a lot of 10.5 software works just fine in 10.6 beause of Rosetta.
It's Lion that kills Rosetta and all your old programs.
Snow is faster than Leopard too, a nicer OS and likely the best one Apple has ever made. Lion is a control freaks train wreck.

After erasing hard drive they wanted my apple ID to download Mavericks, but I am selling my Macbook

I am selling my Macbook Pro and so I decided to delete everything and clean the hard drive but when I clicked on "Reinstall OS..." It wanted me to log in to my apple store to install the OS Mavericks.
Luckily after it was installed it asked for my Apple ID and iCloud information again to which I skipped because I didn't want any personal information on the Macbook.
However, I did put my apple ID information when I had to install the Mavericks. So my question is would they somehow have access to my apple ID?

The operating system that was originally installed can be transferred to a new owner, but you cannot sell Mavericks or anything else you purchased with your Apple ID.
To prepare it for sale you must follow these instructions.
Refer to What to do before selling or giving away your Mac
If you enabled FileVault, disable it in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
"Deauthorize" your iTunes account. Same for Audible if you have one.
System Preferences > iCloud > de-select "Back to My Mac" and "Find my Mac".
Sign out of iCloud. Select "Delete from Mac" when it appears.
Next: Remove all your personal information by completely erasing the Mac's internal storage.
If your Mac shipped with a grey System Install DVD, start your Mac with that disc inserted in the optical drive while holding the c key to boot from it instead of its internal volume, which should be erased before selling it.
If your Mac did not ship with discs, boot OS X Internet Recovery:
using three fingers press and hold the following keys: ⌘(command), option, and R.
With a fourth finger press the power button to turn on the Mac.
Keep the other three fingers where they are until you see the "spinning globe" icon.
This method forces the Mac to download its originally installed OS from Apple's servers, which will not require an Apple ID to install.
Remove any Open Firmware password if you created one: select Firmware Password Utility from the Utilities menu and remove it.
Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Remove any partitions you may have created.
Select the Mac's hard disk icon, then select the "Erase" tab.
Select the "Security Options" button and erase the disk.
The more "securely" you erase the disk, the longer it will take.
The fastest method is sufficient since all but the most expensive techniques and equipment will be able to recover securely erased data.
When it finishes, quit Disk Utility.
Select Install Mac OS X from the Utilities menu.
An Apple ID will not be required. If a prompt for an Apple ID appears, return to Step 5.
Do not create any user accounts.
When it finishes, shut down the computer.
If you want to install the bundled apps that were included with your Mac, restart by using your Applications DVD if one was included, and install the bundled apps. Apps bundled with newer Macs that shipped without discs cannot be transferred. Its new owner must purchase them from the Mac App Store using his or her own Apple ID.
If the Mac is being sold to someone outside the family consider the following additional information:
System Install DVDs that came with your Mac should remain with it forever, and must be included with the sale.
Consider including your AppleCare certificate if you bought it, printed documentation, even the box if you still have it. AppleCare stays with the equipment and is transferable.
Execute a bill of sale showing the Mac's serial number.
Once no longer in your possession, remove the Mac from your devices in My Support Profile.

Hi I have recentley bought a Macbook pro and I will be selling my iMac but just wondered what steps should be taken before selling it onto a buyer?
I want to remove all programs and wipe it clean, then restore it to factory settings so the buyer can start using it from (like) new.

What will I need to upgrade my Macbook Pro's HDD to an SSD?

I wanted to know what I would need in order to upgrade my early 2011 Macbook Pro's HDD to an SSD. What should I consider before making the change from an HDD to an SSD? Also what are the pros and cons to making this change - excluding the price of the drive of course.
I have read in some places that changing form an HDD to an SSD will reduce battery life but I am getting mixed information about this because some articles say how it actually improves batterly life.
I also read that a lot of SSDs are incompatible with Macbook Pros and so it worries me that I would invest this much money for no reason. Another thing I am uncertain about is what SATA to get, I believe the early 2011 MBP has SATA III, but I've read that the SSDs don't perform at SATA III speeds.
In short, I don't know much about the specifications, but if you guys can elaborate on them and suggest the right thing to do would be great. Also, what kind of kits or seperate parts would I need beside the actual SSD to do this upgrade.

Another thought about cloning to an SSD.
I've done my fair share of cloning to new drives to only later sanitize (zero out) it and do a fresh install. I think cloning is a great alternative for Mac OS's 10.6.X and below, but for 10.7X and above A fresh install is MY preferred choice.
As Bimmer mentioned "if you have unresolved issues with your Macbook, that gets copied over to your new drive when you do a clone...".
Sure it takes a little longer but you'll feel better in the end. When you take out the OLD drive save it for a few weeks after installing the NEW drive (SSD) just to make sure your new drive is working properly. That way if the new drive fail just swap them back.
Get all your ducks in a row before you start.
1. Solid backup
2. Boot disk Snow Leopard and below or Boot USB drive with Lion or Mountain Lion
3. Fast Internet connection, either LAN (fastest) or WAN (will work)
I'm willing to walk you through it and sure Bimmer will do the same. Just let us know when your ready, hopefully you have a second computer to commutate.
