What should I do if installation disc is lost and hard drive was fully erased?

Hi Guys,
i'm new to Mac and just purchased a used one so forgive my ignurants
Well, I've just purchased a used Mac (Macbook Pro 13', Mid 2010) that came without the original Installation disc (snow leopard 10.6.3) and without drivers disc (drivers for windows i think).
I've stupidity erased the hard drive without making a backup or preparing a boot media so now im just stuck and can't really do anything!
What is the best solution for me? Should i just buy a new os x snow leopard disc for installation? since i cant buy mountain lion as it's an online purchase via Mac only...
BTW, can i download mountain lion on another Mac, burn it on DVD and install it on my Mac from boot?
after i will be able to install OS X (following your advices here), and when i want to install windows as well on boot camp, how will i be able to install drives if i don't have the drivers CD as well?
Does Apple sends installation disc for restoring failed systems?
Please don't advice going to Apple Store as i live in Israel and we don't have Apple branches here and local importer can't help me.
Many Thx!!!
G

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 They will ask you for the serial number and will send you the DVDs that came with the MacBook Pro.
Then, just insert the Mac OS X Install DVD, hold the C key while your Mac is starting and install Mac OS X. After installing Mac OS X, insert the Applications disc and install the iLife applications. Finally, open  > Software Update, and install the most recent version.

That's another option. If you have another Mac, you can purchase OS X Mountain Lion on it and download the OS X Mountain Lion installer. When the download finishes, simply close the installer and use Lion Diskmaker to make a bootable DVD or USB drive of Mountain Lion.
To start up from the DVD, hold the C key while your Mac is starting, and install OS X, so you will have the most recent version.

If you decide to install Mountain Lion, Boot Camp Assistant will give you the option to download the Windows support software. Also, the drivers that come with the DVDs are outdated.
If you decide to install Snow Leopard, the Mac OS X disc contains the Boot Camp drivers. However, you can download the most recent Boot Camp drivers from the Apple site > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

can i get my itunes downloads from previous purchases again because my computer's har drive was erased or do i need to buy them again? cause if so then that's bull.

Apple's policy is clear: iTS purchases can be downloaded only once. It is your responsibility to make back-ups .
That being said, at their discretion they have made one-time exceptions to this policy. You can ask for an exception by submitting the form at the bottom of this page:

Good Luck! But whatever the response from Apple, remember:

You can find the Apple Bluetooth card on eBay for as little ten dollars (says its for the 2008 model Mac Pro, not sure about the 2007).
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bluetooth-Board-iMac-and-Mac-Pro-922-8233-922-8233-/1208 49278570
Here is a link to a full explanation of the card and how to install it. Part numbers may differ a bit as that is an old article and newer models have come out.

Just make sure that the part will work in your model Mac Pro. To that end, you may be better off avoiding eBay and going to a parts reseller. There are even third party cards that use the internal Apple bluetooth slot.

In theory, using a USB or PCI card will work at login so long as it is recognized by Apples drivers. You say you need to launch an application to use your current USB Bluetooth dongle? If it is not controlled by the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar then it must be using a third party driver of some sort. Unfortunately, I don't know off hand which USB and PCI cards are supported.

Cicleonepro you will want to utilize a Mac computer capable or running Mac OS 10.7 or later.  You can find the system requirements for the Creative Cloud at System requirements | Creative Cloud.  While older software titles are currently included with a membership to maximize your value I would recommend utilizing a computer which meets and exceeds the system requirements for the Adobe Creative software titles you wish to run.

Snow Leopard's Startup Disk pref can’t see Yosemite volumes. So the only way to switch from Snow Leopard to Yosemite is to do what Niel mentioned. Doesn't matter whether it's connected by USB or Firewire, although performance via FW would be faster.
Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?

  • I can not get the new updates because my start disc and hard drive are full, I need 1.98 GB.

I can not get the new updates because my start disc and hard drive are full, I need 1.98 GB.

Some folks recommend OmniDiskSweaper to allow you to review your stuff to find possible candidates to throw away.
Even if you throw away some stuff and your desired "1.98GB", then what?  If that's the number you need for the update, you'll just use most or all of the reclaimed space with the update and you are right back to where you started.
You don't specify what kind of machine you got but presumably it's a mac pro since you posted in the Mac Pro community.  In which case just get yourself another drive or two and move stuff around to free up your boot drive.
[Perhaps you should hurry too since I expect hdd prices might be going up due to possible impending hdd shortages.]
Finally, if some of those updates are major system updates you want extra drives for backups because I always recommend you never do major updates to your system without backups to that system.

It felt as if maybe a virus was at work but I ran Sophos and found nothing.
I store images on my Drobo Raid system but when I work from my Macbook Pro I have no issues, just on the tower.

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

  • What's the Difference Between Logic Board Failure and Hard Drive Failure

    Hi!
So I wanted to know the difference between a Logic Board Failure and Hard Drive Failure because a couple of days ago I tried starting my computer up and I was welcomed by the Apple chime and a grey screen. I have been researching and most people say its either the hard drive or the logic board. So I am curious to know what are the symptoms of both. Thanks a lot, in advance!

The hard drive is where the OS resides, if it dies there is no OS loading, so you can't boot. If you hook up your external drive with your clone of the internal drive, boot up and hold down the option key, select your clone drive as the startup drive in boot manager that then appears, and the computer boots normally, then the computer is OK, it is just the internal drive that has gone south. You don't have a clone to boot from? Now you know why you should.
You could try booting from the DVD that came with the computer, hold down the "D" key to run diagnostics and see what the results are. If you can't boot into the diagnostics then a trip to the Apple store is probably in order.

I have a macbook 2006 its hard drive was not working anymore so i install a new 500GB hard drive but now i just need the software. Which one should i buy?

    Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
You can buy Snow Leopard at:
Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You could contact Apple Support and see if they have the original discs for that machine but it would be 10.4.11 and there's no reason not to go to at least Snow Leopard, especially since the 10.6 discs would probably cost the same as a replacement set of 10.4.11

  • I have a macbook pro 10.6.8 system.  My hard drive was replaced under warranty.  Since then, my computer runs hot. The original hard drive never ran hot.  What would cause the new hard drive to run hot?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.8, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7,  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3.  This is my first computer so don't know anything about trouble shooting.  A week before the warranty expired, I took my computer to Apple to be checked.  I was told that my hard drive was bad and they replaced the hard drive.  Since then, my computer runs hot most of the time and the fan is constantly coming on, which is good  My computer rarely ran hot with the original hard drive.  What would be causing this?

    racergirl,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that makes a difference with the heat?
