What should I upgrade first?

I'm thinking of upgrading something to improve my after effects rendering and realtime view-ability.  What would you suggest I upgrade first? my raid?  Get an arecca?  Or cpu?  Or something else?
specs:
gtx480
24gb ram
960 overclocked to 4.0
os drive - ssd
Raid 0 internal (4 drives) media drive
Raid 0 internal (2 drives) output drive
I'm also maxed out as far as space to store drives inside my case.  Any suggestions?  Where do you put all of your drives?
Thanks!
Adam

Never heard of a gtx480. Buy a new computer.
But even that won't make After Effects tangibly better unless your current mashine is more than four or five years old. After Effects is all about math, Teraflops may get the equations processed faster but the images still have to be recalled from drives, moved around, written out to various locations and then displayed. The physical movement of data is pretty much going at the speed of light now.

Working in After Effects efficiently and enjoying it is not just dependent on the rendering speed of your computer. Enjoying working in After Effects is planning your work to get the most out of your existing system's abilities without too much frustration. Work at resolutions, in color spaces and frame rates adequate to the task of editing and creating. After your designs and rough cuts are approved, you advance to working in the release medium.
In a commercial setting,  if you have the machines and IT support to keep it running, the work of full rez output can be offloaded to a render farm. At home, you learn to use what you have until you can figure out a way to pay for new hardware. However, in the many years I have been using After Effects, advances in hardware do not necessarily mean improvements in rendering speeds. My huge new Macintosh only gives me a slight improvement in rendering. The vast oceans of RAM and fast SSD will allow creative experimentation, once I figure it all out and relearn my long-established workflows, but it's going to take Adobe some time to figure out how to take advantage of PC and Mac hardare advances.

  • I'm running OS X what should I upgrade to?

I'm running OS X what should I upgrade to?

    Hi,
If your forum info is up to date, you're currently running OS X 10.5.8 Leopard. If you want to update to the more recent versions like Lion or Mountain Lion when it's released, you first have to buy Snow Leopard, which is version 10.6. You can still get that on the online Apple Store here or at any Apple Retailer (I think).
Hope that helps you out, feel free to ask anything else.

The current system is OS X 10.8 which is downloadable from the App store, which you can upgrade to directly if your system meets the system requirements.  Note that starting with OS X 10.7, PowerPC-based programs will no longer run. So, for example, people with Office 2004 got surprised when they upgraded and found that the older Office programs would no longer run. Newer Office programs are OK.

    To clarify;
    Snow Leopard 10.6;
    Lion 10.7:
    Snow Leopard DVD:
You can get it only by phone now from Apple.
In the US, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for a sales assistant. Last quoted price was $19.99 for the single-user and $29.99 for the family licence.
For other countries, check here; http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Don't forget to ask for Sales; the tech support guys can't help.
When you've installed SL it will be 10.6.3. You need to update that to 10.6.8 with the combo installer from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Lion is only available by phone also - same number and they'll give you a download code to use in the Mac App Store.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 with OS X 10.6.8. what should I upgrade to, for now?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8. and I'm unsure about upgrading, but feel the need to. What should I upgrade to, for now? THANK YOU!

Keep your Snow Leopard installation and test Mavericks on a separate partition or external drive. You will probably want to have both options. Mavericks and anything else after Snow Leopard has changes to the user interface that many of us find pointless and irritating. And you won't be able to use any software that runs via Rosetta in Snow Leopard. You will have to upgrade software that needs Rosetta to a later version, or get something else entirely.

  • What should I upgrade next

Thank for everyones help so far.  It seems the computer I have is a .little under speced so I was wondering what I should consider upgrading next.  Memeory, CPU and GPU may be the answer but I am a student so need to take things slowly.
I Cuppently have the following setup:
    GA-Z77-DS3H Motherboard
    Intel i5 3550 CPU
    16GB 1666 Memory
    550 Ti GPU
I have odered a RAID0 DUAL drive enslosure and have 2*2TB Baracuda 72000 Drives.  Things generaly play without dropped frames in my current setup (FW800 Media Drive) so I dont think HD is the issue and when I get the new enclosure I will be more than doubeling disk throughput (I am editing DSLR/AVCHSD fottage whitch has a relativly low bandwidth).
Alough it is not dropping frames playback is not ideal.  A lot of the time I have sync but it does tend to go out and I have ot stop/start to get it back. This has led me to think it is the CPU/GPU that I should consider upgrading next.  CPU is way under 50% so that makes me think GPU.  Is GPU used to play DSLR/AVCHD?
    So hat do people think?
    Ben

    Jim Simon wrote:

The GPU isn't used for any playback.  It helps with effects, scaling, color space, resolution and frame rate differences, but decoding for playback is always handled by the CPU.
That isn't exactly the case.  The graphics card still has to put the pixels on the screen and refresh the frame and I kid you not, I've seen PCs too slow to do that.  Remember all those emachines and HP's that shipped out in 2008 with the geforce 6150 onboard?  They cannot play youtube videos at full screen without chopping frames in half and skipping even with a high powered dual athlon chip and tons of RAM.  They can't play DVDs or video files above about 640x480 either.  All programs use the graphics card to some extent but playback of an unmodified video clip requires practically no calculations, just the OS telling the graphics card to create the separate graphics layer and put it on the screen.  In your case, with the 550TI, it's fast enough to play anything though.
I don't think external media limitations would result in individual dropped frames though so I can't figure out what's causing your problem.  That would cause temporary pauses when the buffer in memory runs out (on long videos) but not frames to drop.
Then it depends on many varibles: the controller inside the enclosure and the controller on your motherboard. Some USB 3.0 setups can barely reach 100 MB/s in maximum sustainable transfer speed; other combinations can reach at least 150 MB/s.
Luckily all actual Intel chipset-based controllers run at exactly the same speed since they're all exactly the same controller.  They're fast too.  Those dumpy aftermarket ones thrown on budget motherboards have severe performance issues though.  Some PCI-E controller cards don't do so well and some outperform the Intel versions so that's a real grab bag.
If you have a bunch of hard drives though, your PC probably has 1 SATAIII controller and 1 SATAII controller and that's it so the bandwidth is shared by all devices connected to them.  So because of that, I'd stick with USB3.0.  It's definitely not good enough for some sort of external RAID though, as it will hit the upper limit of speed really quickly and not perform at full speed.

  • What should I upgrade my T61p into?

    Hi,
I'm long time owner of T61p and I'm pretty satisfied with it. It worked really great for me for the past 4 years but I think it's high time for an upgrade. I'm not that much into laptops so I would really apprectiate any kind of advice about what should I choose since I have completely no idea what models are popular and suitable for me. I use my laptop mostly for gaming and photoshop.
    Greetings.

My Macbook Pro runs on OSX version 10.6.8.  It started running slow a few days ago I'm concerned about a virus. Want to upgrade to OS but not sure which OS I should upgrade to.  I'm not computer savvy so Im asking what OS should I upgrade to. I've been happy with my mac for 5 yrs.

My Mac is running normally at this point.  Slow speed is gone.   Here is the report:

your project should have all th UI related jars... addded for the java class to compile..
    please add
    JSF 1.2
    ADF Faces Runtime
its better you create ADF view controller project.. so that all the libraries will be configured and added to you by default..

  • I need to upgrade my operating system. What should I do first?

    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac5,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          1
      Total Number Of Cores:          2
L2 Cache (per processor):          4 MB
      Memory:          2 GB
      Bus Speed:          667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          IM51.0090.B09
      SMC Version:          1.8f2

You didn't say where you need to upgrade to, or for what ... so here's the path to get you current.
First, install OS X 10.6. This is available from the online Apple store, which in the US is at 800-MY-APPLE or online here. See this article on installation considerations. Ensure you have have a solid, bootable, backup before you start. Plan to erase and install then transfer files from your backup.
After you install OS X 10.6 and do Software Updates, you'll be at OS X 10.6.8. From here you can upgrade to either OS X 10.7 Lion or, assuming your iMac is a mid-2007 or newer model, to the current OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.  Unless you have a reason to upgrade to Lion, you should probably go straight to Mountain Lion. Note, both Lion and Mountain Lion have a minimum memory requirement of 2GB, which you have, however, 4GB is recommended.
You can order OS X 10.7 Lion from the online Apple store, which in the US is at 800-MY-APPLE. You can download OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion directly from the App store (you'll have the access program on your OS X 10.6.8 system). You can go directly from OS X 10.6 to OS X 10.8, you do not need to install OS X 10.7 as an intermediate step.
If you have any PowerPC programs, they will no longer work under OS X 10.7 Lion or OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.  Some were surprised when Microsoft Office 2004 no longer worked after the conversion.

  • What should I upgrade my mac x 10.5.8 software to?

In order to do many thing including installing programs, syncing my iphone ect, I need to upgrade my software.
I have a very old mac with X 10.5.8 and am not a technological genius to say the least.
I know I need to upgrade my software to at least 10.6 (I think it's Snow Leopard) but I don't want to do this just to find out I was able to skip that and download the latest software as I don't have money to burn.
Also what are the pro's and con's of upgrading past 10.6 if I do so?
    Thanks,
    Mac Novice

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a PowerPC Mac, it's already running the newest OS it can.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update. If you're running Mac OS X Server, you'll need to phone the online Apple Store instead of using the link.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, upgrade it as if it was a Core Duo Mac, and if desired, open the Mac App Store, and try downloading 10.9. If you get told it's incompatible, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

I know I need to upgrade from Snow Leopard but what do I go to next??
MacBook Pro 5.5, 2 GB of memory 10.6.8

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download Mavericks from the Mac App Store. You should install more RAM in the computer if you choose to upgrade.

  • What should I upgrade in my iMac 21.5"?

I'm planning to buy an iMac 21.5 with 2.9 GHz. I have money for 2 things to upgrade but I don't know what to upgrade!
I use my mac for Photoshop, AutoCAD, Solid Works (Parallels with Windows 7) and obviously other smaller programs like Spotify, iTunes, Pages, Keynote, etc.
I'm sure to upgrade from quad-core i5 to quad-core i7 but the thing I'm not so sure is to go with the 16 gb RAM instead of 8 but stay with the 1TB ATA Serial HD or:
stay with the 8 gb RAM and upgrade the HD for 1TB Fusion Drive or 256 gb Flash.
    Thanks

Photoshop and Spotify will likely use up a lot of memory, so consider upgrading to 16GB.
