What should I upgrade in my iMac 21.5"?

I'm planning to buy an iMac 21.5 with 2.9 GHz. I have money for 2 things to upgrade but I don't know what to upgrade!
I use my mac for Photoshop, AutoCAD, Solid Works (Parallels with Windows 7) and obviously other smaller programs like Spotify, iTunes, Pages, Keynote, etc.
I'm sure to upgrade from quad-core i5 to quad-core i7 but the thing I'm not so sure is to go with the 16 gb RAM instead of 8 but stay with the 1TB ATA Serial HD or:
stay with the 8 gb RAM and upgrade the HD for 1TB Fusion Drive or 256 gb Flash.
Thanks

Photoshop and Spotify will likely use up a lot of memory, so consider upgrading to 16GB.

I am trying to get my system current.  I am now running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8 (I believe this is "Snow Leopard").  What should I upgrade to?

The current system is OS X 10.8 which is downloadable from the App store, which you can upgrade to directly if your system meets the system requirements.  Note that starting with OS X 10.7, PowerPC-based programs will no longer run. So, for example, people with Office 2004 got surprised when they upgraded and found that the older Office programs would no longer run. Newer Office programs are OK.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 with OS X 10.6.8. what should I upgrade to, for now?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8. and I'm unsure about upgrading, but feel the need to. What should I upgrade to, for now? THANK YOU!

Keep your Snow Leopard installation and test Mavericks on a separate partition or external drive. You will probably want to have both options. Mavericks and anything else after Snow Leopard has changes to the user interface that many of us find pointless and irritating. And you won't be able to use any software that runs via Rosetta in Snow Leopard. You will have to upgrade software that needs Rosetta to a later version, or get something else entirely.

I'm running OS X what should I upgrade to?

    Hi,
If your forum info is up to date, you're currently running OS X 10.5.8 Leopard. If you want to update to the more recent versions like Lion or Mountain Lion when it's released, you first have to buy Snow Leopard, which is version 10.6. You can still get that on the online Apple Store here or at any Apple Retailer (I think).
Hope that helps you out, feel free to ask anything else.

  • What should I do if my imac has a virus and my email has been hacked

what should I do if my imac has a virus and my email has been hacked

when you say your email has been hacked... Do you mean that people are telling you that they are getting emails from you that you never sent?
It is possible that it is a virus, but also it could have been due to a phishing scam.
Another possibility could be that someone is using a script or program that uses your email as an Alias (Mask) to cover up who the email is really being sent from.
As far as what to do if you think you have a virus, just make sure your software is up to date by clicking the () in the upper left and then click 'Software Update'.
You can get virus scanner software, and antivirus programs as well as Rudegar said as well.
Is anything else behaving abnormally other than your email?

  • Should I upgrade my 2008 iMac from 10.6 to 10.7 or 10.8?

I'm wondering (a) should I upgrade at all and what to and (b) if I do can I go back to 10.6 somehow?
    (a) I would like to have increased connectivity between my iMac and iOS devices via iCloud, and I like the new Mail app in Lion/ML. Anyone got experience with older iMacs running Lion or ML?  How well do they cope?  Any advantages or disadvantages of note?
If a lot of people find that performance is really bad on similar iMacs the following is not relevant. (I have increased RAM to 4GB (max) and have a 320 GB HDD)
I was thinking of some ways to upgrade that might allow me to just see how the iMac handles a new OS and still allow me to go back to SL if it slows down too much.
    1. Install Lion on a partition.  If it works well install Lion onto whole system, if not delete partition.
    2. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6 via a Time Machine backup (doubt that would work).
    3. Install Lion on whole system and if slow go back to 10.6  via a backup in other software (CCC for example – which I don't have yet – might work?).

First check that your Mac meets the System requirements for Lion...

  • What kind of upgrades are my iMac model eligible for?

Hi, I have the same problem and was wondering if someone could walk me through what I need to do to find out what kind of upgrades the iMac model I have is eligible for?
    <Re-Titled By Host>

The model identifier info provided shows what may be a 20-inch or 24-inch, as iMac7.1
These may see an upgrade in RAM so as to facilitate running a system software upgrade:
Maximum Memory   6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
Until some time ago there had been a Firmware Update:  iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.3
however, now the link previously available, appears to no longer function.
According to http://mactracker.ca database application, your general iMac7.1 series is
able to run as new a system as Yosemite 10.10; however some users had found that to
be a bit far of a reach for this old a model due to hardware limits of the vintage. If not
already running at least Snow Leopard 10.6.8, you could get & try Mountain Lion 10.8.5
(buy $19. upgrade code, from Apple; that would unlock Mac app download) as Mavericks
10.9.5 is no longer available as an upgrade to older systems. The theory is that if a Mac
could use Mavericks, it should be able to accommodate Yosemite. But, not always.
Some people liked Snow Leopard 10.6.8 - and it is on retail DVD for easy offline restore
or bootable utilities on the same disc - still available from Apple $19. It should run fine
unless you have some need to upgrade further. This system is needed to go to App Store
and other aspects of the newer OS X available from the internet only.
The site http://everymac.com has a fair database of most things Mac, so that in addition
to the download MacTracker app, are good references and hardware example data.
    Hopefully this helped some.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What steps to upgrade panther on imac

I want to upgrade an old imac 350mhz (Indigo, slot loader with 192 mb ram) with Panther retail disks. It's only for internet use by my infant children to access their school website etc.
I've carried out quite an exhaustive search over this forum to find an overview of the steps i need to action. So far i've added the latest firmware update, upgraded the hard drive to a 20gb drive, changed the pram battery and ordered another 512mb memory stick from Crucial.
Usually i'd zero write the hard drive and install panther on the clean disk. I'm worried that this will erase the firmware update. Is this right or need i not be worried?
If anybody can provide a link that easily identifies each step i would be very grateful.
I do not intend to leave OS 9.2.2 on the computer - Can this cause any issues further down the line such as if i need to boot from disk etc?

firmware dones't reside on the hard drive, its loaded to the motherboard, so it doens't matter what you do to the drive, the firmware update is there an nothing can change that.
getting rid of OS 9 shouldn't cause any problem, other than you won't be able to use classic in OS X.

  • What Exactly is upgradable in a iMac 7,1

This computer has been in the family for a while.
I was wondering What can be upgraded?
    I know The ram
And ive seen a few videos on hard drive upgrades
Not to sure on the ram speed.
And can i just pick out any hard drive or does it have to meet some requirements?
Maybe there can be a video card upgrade?
Any Information and tips would be great!

  • What should I upgrade next

Thank for everyones help so far.  It seems the computer I have is a .little under speced so I was wondering what I should consider upgrading next.  Memeory, CPU and GPU may be the answer but I am a student so need to take things slowly.
I Cuppently have the following setup:
    GA-Z77-DS3H Motherboard
    Intel i5 3550 CPU
    16GB 1666 Memory
    550 Ti GPU
I have odered a RAID0 DUAL drive enslosure and have 2*2TB Baracuda 72000 Drives.  Things generaly play without dropped frames in my current setup (FW800 Media Drive) so I dont think HD is the issue and when I get the new enclosure I will be more than doubeling disk throughput (I am editing DSLR/AVCHSD fottage whitch has a relativly low bandwidth).
Alough it is not dropping frames playback is not ideal.  A lot of the time I have sync but it does tend to go out and I have ot stop/start to get it back. This has led me to think it is the CPU/GPU that I should consider upgrading next.  CPU is way under 50% so that makes me think GPU.  Is GPU used to play DSLR/AVCHD?
    So hat do people think?
    Ben

    Jim Simon wrote:
Is GPU used to play DSLR/AVCHD?
The GPU isn't used for any playback.  It helps with effects, scaling, color space, resolution and frame rate differences, but decoding for playback is always handled by the CPU.
That isn't exactly the case.  The graphics card still has to put the pixels on the screen and refresh the frame and I kid you not, I've seen PCs too slow to do that.  Remember all those emachines and HP's that shipped out in 2008 with the geforce 6150 onboard?  They cannot play youtube videos at full screen without chopping frames in half and skipping even with a high powered dual athlon chip and tons of RAM.  They can't play DVDs or video files above about 640x480 either.  All programs use the graphics card to some extent but playback of an unmodified video clip requires practically no calculations, just the OS telling the graphics card to create the separate graphics layer and put it on the screen.  In your case, with the 550TI, it's fast enough to play anything though.
I don't think external media limitations would result in individual dropped frames though so I can't figure out what's causing your problem.  That would cause temporary pauses when the buffer in memory runs out (on long videos) but not frames to drop.
Then it depends on many varibles: the controller inside the enclosure and the controller on your motherboard. Some USB 3.0 setups can barely reach 100 MB/s in maximum sustainable transfer speed; other combinations can reach at least 150 MB/s.
Luckily all actual Intel chipset-based controllers run at exactly the same speed since they're all exactly the same controller.  They're fast too.  Those dumpy aftermarket ones thrown on budget motherboards have severe performance issues though.  Some PCI-E controller cards don't do so well and some outperform the Intel versions so that's a real grab bag.
If you have a bunch of hard drives though, your PC probably has 1 SATAIII controller and 1 SATAII controller and that's it so the bandwidth is shared by all devices connected to them.  So because of that, I'd stick with USB3.0.  It's definitely not good enough for some sort of external RAID though, as it will hit the upper limit of speed really quickly and not perform at full speed.

  • What should I upgrade my T61p into?

    Hi,
I'm long time owner of T61p and I'm pretty satisfied with it. It worked really great for me for the past 4 years but I think it's high time for an upgrade. I'm not that much into laptops so I would really apprectiate any kind of advice about what should I choose since I have completely no idea what models are popular and suitable for me. I use my laptop mostly for gaming and photoshop.
    Greetings.

  • I am running on Snow Leopard - what should I upgrade to next

I know I need to upgrade from Snow Leopard but what do I go to next??
MacBook Pro 5.5, 2 GB of memory 10.6.8

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download Mavericks from the Mac App Store. You should install more RAM in the computer if you choose to upgrade.

  • What should we call the new iMac G5 ?

The first G5's are referred to as Rev. A
    The next were Rev. B
I like what OWC calls the new iMac's, "iMac Slim"
    Any other good names?

"The second version was distinguished by the Ambient Light Sensor, the third by built-in iSight."
For clarity's sake, I like "just plain" iMacG5 Version 1, (2 or 3) inasmuch as there is more to each version than the "distinguishing feature." AND the "distinguishing feature" might not be the selling point to a prospective buyer whereas the other features might be.

  • What should I upgrade my mac x 10.5.8 software to?

In order to do many thing including installing programs, syncing my iphone ect, I need to upgrade my software.
I have a very old mac with X 10.5.8 and am not a technological genius to say the least.
I know I need to upgrade my software to at least 10.6 (I think it's Snow Leopard) but I don't want to do this just to find out I was able to skip that and download the latest software as I don't have money to burn.
Also what are the pro's and con's of upgrading past 10.6 if I do so?

If it's a PowerPC Mac, it's already running the newest OS it can.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update. If you're running Mac OS X Server, you'll need to phone the online Apple Store instead of using the link.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, upgrade it as if it was a Core Duo Mac, and if desired, open the Mac App Store, and try downloading 10.9. If you get told it's incompatible, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.
