What should I upgrade my mac x 10.5.8 software to?

In order to do many thing including installing programs, syncing my iphone ect, I need to upgrade my software.
I have a very old mac with X 10.5.8 and am not a technological genius to say the least.
I know I need to upgrade my software to at least 10.6 (I think it's Snow Leopard) but I don't want to do this just to find out I was able to skip that and download the latest software as I don't have money to burn.
Also what are the pro's and con's of upgrading past 10.6 if I do so?
Thanks,
Mac Novice

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a PowerPC Mac, it's already running the newest OS it can.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update. If you're running Mac OS X Server, you'll need to phone the online Apple Store instead of using the link.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, upgrade it as if it was a Core Duo Mac, and if desired, open the Mac App Store, and try downloading 10.9. If you get told it's incompatible, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

I am trying to get my system current.  I am now running Mac OS X, version 10.6.8 (I believe this is "Snow Leopard").  What should I upgrade to?

The current system is OS X 10.8 which is downloadable from the App store, which you can upgrade to directly if your system meets the system requirements.  Note that starting with OS X 10.7, PowerPC-based programs will no longer run. So, for example, people with Office 2004 got surprised when they upgraded and found that the older Office programs would no longer run. Newer Office programs are OK.

Keep your Snow Leopard installation and test Mavericks on a separate partition or external drive. You will probably want to have both options. Mavericks and anything else after Snow Leopard has changes to the user interface that many of us find pointless and irritating. And you won't be able to use any software that runs via Rosetta in Snow Leopard. You will have to upgrade software that needs Rosetta to a later version, or get something else entirely.

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download Mavericks from the Mac App Store. If it's incompatible with your computer, so is Messages.

    Hi,
If your forum info is up to date, you're currently running OS X 10.5.8 Leopard. If you want to update to the more recent versions like Lion or Mountain Lion when it's released, you first have to buy Snow Leopard, which is version 10.6. You can still get that on the online Apple Store here or at any Apple Retailer (I think).
Hope that helps you out, feel free to ask anything else.

  • What should I upgrade next

Thank for everyones help so far.  It seems the computer I have is a .little under speced so I was wondering what I should consider upgrading next.  Memeory, CPU and GPU may be the answer but I am a student so need to take things slowly.
I Cuppently have the following setup:
    GA-Z77-DS3H Motherboard
    Intel i5 3550 CPU
    16GB 1666 Memory
    550 Ti GPU
I have odered a RAID0 DUAL drive enslosure and have 2*2TB Baracuda 72000 Drives.  Things generaly play without dropped frames in my current setup (FW800 Media Drive) so I dont think HD is the issue and when I get the new enclosure I will be more than doubeling disk throughput (I am editing DSLR/AVCHSD fottage whitch has a relativly low bandwidth).
Alough it is not dropping frames playback is not ideal.  A lot of the time I have sync but it does tend to go out and I have ot stop/start to get it back. This has led me to think it is the CPU/GPU that I should consider upgrading next.  CPU is way under 50% so that makes me think GPU.  Is GPU used to play DSLR/AVCHD?
    So hat do people think?
    Ben

    Jim Simon wrote:

The GPU isn't used for any playback.  It helps with effects, scaling, color space, resolution and frame rate differences, but decoding for playback is always handled by the CPU.
That isn't exactly the case.  The graphics card still has to put the pixels on the screen and refresh the frame and I kid you not, I've seen PCs too slow to do that.  Remember all those emachines and HP's that shipped out in 2008 with the geforce 6150 onboard?  They cannot play youtube videos at full screen without chopping frames in half and skipping even with a high powered dual athlon chip and tons of RAM.  They can't play DVDs or video files above about 640x480 either.  All programs use the graphics card to some extent but playback of an unmodified video clip requires practically no calculations, just the OS telling the graphics card to create the separate graphics layer and put it on the screen.  In your case, with the 550TI, it's fast enough to play anything though.
I don't think external media limitations would result in individual dropped frames though so I can't figure out what's causing your problem.  That would cause temporary pauses when the buffer in memory runs out (on long videos) but not frames to drop.
Then it depends on many varibles: the controller inside the enclosure and the controller on your motherboard. Some USB 3.0 setups can barely reach 100 MB/s in maximum sustainable transfer speed; other combinations can reach at least 150 MB/s.
Luckily all actual Intel chipset-based controllers run at exactly the same speed since they're all exactly the same controller.  They're fast too.  Those dumpy aftermarket ones thrown on budget motherboards have severe performance issues though.  Some PCI-E controller cards don't do so well and some outperform the Intel versions so that's a real grab bag.
If you have a bunch of hard drives though, your PC probably has 1 SATAIII controller and 1 SATAII controller and that's it so the bandwidth is shared by all devices connected to them.  So because of that, I'd stick with USB3.0.  It's definitely not good enough for some sort of external RAID though, as it will hit the upper limit of speed really quickly and not perform at full speed.

  • What should I upgrade my T61p into?

    Hi,
I'm long time owner of T61p and I'm pretty satisfied with it. It worked really great for me for the past 4 years but I think it's high time for an upgrade. I'm not that much into laptops so I would really apprectiate any kind of advice about what should I choose since I have completely no idea what models are popular and suitable for me. I use my laptop mostly for gaming and photoshop.

  • What should I upgrade to??

    Hi All-
I am looking to upgrade my Mac soon. I have been doing a lot of studio work and it's time- I have a PowerMac G5 operating 10.4.3, using Logic Pro 7.2...
My question is: do a need a dual processor for my studio and Logic work? Will a single 8 Core work? Any help is appreciated! I also want to upgrade to Logic 8 Pro ..
    Thanks.
    P

    Hi,
I've never heard of a single eight core... In Mac Pro's you have single four core and double dual core machines (both four processors), and double four cores machines (eight processors). The 'slowest' of those (the single four core "Harpertown" 2.8 Ghz) is +at least+ *three times faster* than a Powermac G5 2.0 Ghz dual...
If you have the money, go for the the 2.8 octoPro and throw as much RAM and Disks at it that you can afford to.
You'll have to sort out your compatibilities with your existing software (checking the makers sites', or the Manuals/specs/readmes etc). All software has to be Intel compatible (=Universal Binary, UB) and it has to be Leopard compatible.
If you go Leopard, after initial installation, update by using the combined sofware update: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_5_ComboUpdate
    regards, Erik.

  • How do I and should I upgrade from Mac OSx 10.5 to 10.6?

I currently have OSX 10.5 on a 2008 macbook pro. Does it make sense for me to upgrade to OSX 10.6 and do I have to first upgrade to SnowLeopard to do that?

Yes, I agree 10.6 Snow Leopard would be excellent choice for your 2008 MBP, what it does is strips out the PPC code your not using in 10.5 Leopard and offer faster video drivers and some nice bells and whistles.
10.6 is faster than 10.5 (video driver improvements) and 10.6 is slightly faster than 10.7.1 (tested on the same hardware)
It might be that 10.7.3+ is possibly a hair bit faster than 10.6, I haven't seen any recent speed comparisons lately.
A advantage with 10.6 is you get to keep running most of your present 10.5 software, some will require a update to work in 10.6 under Rosetta which is a compatability layer.
Most all software and hardware drivers for older third party devices work for 10.6, so your good to go.
Do backup your files off the computer to a storage drive (not TimeMachine) and disconnect before making any major changes.
You can buy the $29 10.6.3 Snow Leopard upgrade/install disk from Apple online.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
Now about 10.7, it's a new OS that came out in July, it's all 64bit and thus it doesn't run Rosetta (of 10.6) and thus your 10.5 software will not work with it.
Some third party software is not ready for 10.7 yet, and a lot of hardware drivers for printers and scanners may not function for it. You will have to do your homework check this table.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
10.7 Lion represents a rather drastic change to OS X in some aspects that need getting used to, no boot disks, internet recovery and the MacAppStore etc.
10.8 is going to be released THIS SUMMER and nearly no software is ready for it obviously and won't run on older hardware (to be determined)
I think 10.7 should run fine on your machine, you may have to upgrade the RAM to 4GB to get better performance.
So you have to make a decision, if it's wise for you to have to buy all new versions of software for your older Mac and run 10.7 or stay with 10.6.8 and run the software you have (minor updates) until perhaps a year from now when 10.8 is out on brand new hardware and the bugs are worked out of it, buy all new software then.
IMO option #2 with 10.6.8 now, 10.8 later is a better choice than option #1 going with 10.7 and paying more money for software, or going without as some isn't ready yet for 10.7.
I don't know what or how much investment in software you have; if little, then 10.7 is nothing, if a lot then you perhaps may want to hold off 10.7 for now.
If you  do decide to go to 10.7, I advise buying the $69 Lion USB thumb drive and option key booting from that, erasing the entire drive and installing 10.7 directly. Skipping right over 10.6.
With the Lion USB you can install 10.7 anytime you want, no internet connection required, however if you upgrade 10.5 to 10.6 ($29) then to 10.7 ($29), then you have to use Internet Recovery from your boot drive, I don't know how reliable your Internet is, but a $69 USB is certainly more reliable for only a few dollars more.
    Good luck.
