What should we call the new iMac G5 ?

The first G5's are referred to as Rev. A
The next were Rev. B
I like what OWC calls the new iMac's, "iMac Slim"
Any other good names?

"The second version was distinguished by the Ambient Light Sensor, the third by built-in iSight."
For clarity's sake, I like "just plain" iMacG5 Version 1, (2 or 3) inasmuch as there is more to each version than the "distinguishing feature." AND the "distinguishing feature" might not be the selling point to a prospective buyer whereas the other features might be.

  • What's wrong with the New  iMac's AirPort?

    Hello
Last night I spent 4 hours trying to connect with my brand new wireless router (Netgear DG834PN). The one time I did connect and tried to configure using Netgear's Wizard (using Safari) my Mac's AirPort Extreme dropped the connection, never to return. The next 3hrs 55mins were spent trying to to get the two devices to connect. Unsuccessfully. Very frustrating!
I even tried connecting the two devices via ethernet, and still no joy. What should I do? Is my new Mac's Built-in AirPort Extreme faulty? Is my new wireless router faulty? Any other testing suggestions welcome.
I've have read, on this forum, about possible problems with the new aluminium iMac's AirPort. Is this a known fact or just a batch issue?
*Many Thanks* (Apologies if I haven't explained myself very well, first post)
    Mike

    *Hi it's me again*
Still no joy trying to connect to my router wirelessly via AirPort.
*+(Xiaofan & Benderissimo)+* - I can't even get as far as logging into the router via a browser. AirPort literally can't see anything even thought it's switched on. This means I have no chance to change the channel or anything else. I'm stuck.
Could AirPort be locked out or something?
On the plus side I have connected to the internet via ethernet. It was no problem at all. I basically connected a length on Cat. 5 cable from port 1 at the back of the router and into my Mac, and *hey presto!* (broadband at full speed). Happy.
The thing is I eventually want to move my iMac upstairs, this is when I need AirPort wireless to start working. I don't want to trail 100ft of Cat. 5 cable all round the house.
What else can I try to make my built-in AirPort Extreme work?
    _*I'm Flummoxed, Apple help me.*_

  • Should I buy the new imac or?

My lease has expired on my G4 Dual 1.25 ghz, 1MB SDRAM and (2) 180GB harddrives and multiple LaCie external Firewire drives and 20" display. I primarily use Final Cut Pro, Motion, Live Type and DVD studio Pro and have not had many issues regarding RT processing and speed. But it is time to upgrade. Would I be well served going to a maxed out imac 20" core duo' 2MB SDRAM, 256MB Vram, 500GB hard Drive or go to a G5 tower and spend a lot more money? I am thinking I would see a substantial improvement over what I am using now with the souped up imac. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Allegedly, Universal versions of the software you're using (at least the Apple apps like Final Cut Pro) are due out in March, but if you're not sure you can wait that long, you might want to go ahead with the G5 tower; I'm thinking they won't switch the towers to Intel until they have relatively bug-free versions of the Pro products out there, and possibly not till Adobe gets off their posterior and gets out new Universal versions of their software (I'm a little ticked off at Adobe right now, can't you tell?), meaning probably not till Q3 perhaps.
Or can you extend your lease on the G4 for another 6 months, to see what's happening with the Universal update on your software?

  • DVD drive problems : should I buy the new iMac ?

Hello, being new to these discussions, I don't know if this question was answered before.
My last iMac's DVD drive stopped working after 3 years use. And from reading the discussions, this problem seemed quite common.
But 3 years is not bad, considering the posts talking about the DVD drive not working on NEW iMacs.
Does anybody know if Apple is going to do something about this soon ? My computer is a working tool, and I cannot spend time or money on repairs all the time.
    Thank you.
    A Mac user since 1985

+"Well, since nobody has an answer, I suppose I will wait until I no longer see the DVD drive problems on the discussions."+
That might be a while. I bought my iMac Oct. 15 and the DVD drive is already not responding. Backing up files, I had burned 2 DVDs from the same package, Toast says this one is a CD-RW and unwritable, and makes a noise like it's trying to eject it but nothing happens. Disk utility says the DVD drive is empty and nothing shows up in the Finder. Using Terminal (drutil eject) and starting up with the mouse button held down makes the same noise as trying to eject it in Toast, with the same results - nothing.
Still trying to find the receipt to take it back & get it repaired. I sure miss the hole for the paper clip.

  • Should i get the new imac?

    Hi,
I have an iMac G5 iSight(not the one with the intel chip). I have heard some great things about the intel chip imac, but i have also heard that it is not much different from the non intel chip imacs. If anyone here has had and iMac G5(non intel) and now has the intel one, could you please tell me if there is as much a difference in speed as apple says. Thanks.
    Max

I suggest that you stick with the imac G5. The only reason that I bought the intel imac was that it was time for a new "home" computer and I knew I might as well buy into the latest technology. I'm very happy with it for movies, email, daily life. It's a great all- around computer and is stylish looking.
However, if you are into gaming, graphics, photography, etc., there is a problem. You'll have to wait for the software companys to release all of their Universal versions. I'm doing my graphics on a PC because all my apps run smoothly. In a year, I'll beef up the ram in my intel, install software that was meant to run on the intel, and use it for 3d work. I predict that you would not really notice a speed increase with the intel and would probably be frustrated with all the little quirks. Just my opinion.

  • Ok, so i bought a imac 27 about 4 months ago, and now they release a new one!  ****... So my question is, should I sell this one (which by the way is the i5 2.8 with 1 gb 5750 and 4gb ram) and buy the new imac 27 i5,or keep the one i have and buy more ram

ok, so i bought a imac 27 about 4 months ago, and now they release a new one!  ****... So my question is, should I sell this one (which by the way is the i5 2.8 with 1 gb 5750 and 4gb ram) and buy the new imac 27 i5,or keep the one i have and buy more ram. I mostly use my computer for photoshop cs5 and illustrator cs5 for graphics out put as well as surfing the web and music.
Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!

  • What bluetooth speaker will work with the new IMAC 27"?

Is Bose better than JamBox? Can someone recommend one? Is the speaker built into the new IMAC 27" good enough without external speaker?

I would expect the Yosemite list to be about the same as what is well-supported today.

I believe his recommendations are accurate, BUT -- Full Disclosure: gets some payments from amazon for his service.

  • Should I buy a Macbook Pro or the New iMac 21'. I have the new iPad and an iPhone 4.

I need to buy a new computer soon and obviously im buying a mac. im not sure which mac I should buy. Im undecided between the new iMac or the Macbook Pro 13. Please help.

Fundamentally, do you need a portable system or a desktop system?  Do you want something that can move around your apt/house and out and about with you? Once you decide that, the decision is easy.  Since you already have an iPad, maybe an iMac would provide a broader coverage solution (I happen to like the larger iMac screen).

  • Should I buy Imac 27'' 3.1 or the new imac 27'' 2.9, which is better?

Should I buy Imac 27'' 3.1 or the new imac 27'' 2.9, which is better? The use to which it is going to give is photographs, video, text processing. If opt for the new'll have to buy an external drive for recording of videos and photographs.

Photos, text & most other things should be fine on either, Video may be a bit better with the faster one, but Video card options may be a far bigger deal.

  • As there is no audio input on the new iMac range, What external equipment will allow me to record onto my iMac ?

As there is no audio input port on the new imac range, what external epuipment can i use to record dj podcasts from a pioneer DJM 700 mixer?

I'd be inclined to use something like the Numark Stereo I/O. If you're currently using the line-in on an iMac then you will see a drastic improvement.
    http://www.numark.com/product/stereoio
That said, you can spend as much or as little as your wallet will allow on a USB input device, more investment brings better quality ADCs, higher bit rates, lower latency and more inputs.

  • My cannon HV 20 camcorder is not recognized in the new imac

    Hi,
I bought the new imac, my Cannon HV 20 HD camcorder is not getting recognized, i have the new Firewire 800 to 4 pin DV connection and imovie9
i tried it on another mac at the apple store - still would not recognize.
I have tried most of the suggestions given in this discussion forum except,
    - checking my camera DV port
    - imac FW 800 port
    - replace another cable
can anyone suggest where to turn this filevault on/off?
    welcoming other solutions.

    Hi
can anyone suggest where to turn this filevault on/off?
Under the Apple menu (top left hand corner of screen) - down to System preferences
Here one icon looks like a Safe - name (not sure) Sweden = Säkerhet = Safety but
most probably should be File Vault.
    Your Camera
    a. Has it worked OK via FireWire on other Mac ?
    b. Can You test it with old FW400-4-pin and on an old Mac ?
Just to rule out that Your Camera is OK.
With the old FW400 connector one could/might insert it 180 deg wrongly into Mac
Yes it needed some force - but on my Mac the connector was on the back so I didn't feel this.
RESULT: Disasterous - A/D-Chip in Camera burned - A hard to get problem though
everything else but just Camera <-> Mac was affected. Expencive repair.
Here is my list on this.
    *NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)
    from LKN 1935.
Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
    a technical check.
    connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
    choose 'About../More..
under Firewire.. what do you read..?
    More
    • FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
    • Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
    • Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choise / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.
    *No Camera or bad import*

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.
