What size Time Capsule - i.e. how big are Time Machine Backups

Hi all,
Just trying to decide which Time Capsule to get...my question is basically how big are Time Machine backups.
For example I have a MacBook with 100gb harddrive. At the moment about 80gb in use.
I assume the Time Capsule will immediately backup that 80gb but how big are the incremental backups. If I modify about a GB's worth of data each day, does this GB get moved to the capsule or is Time Machine cleverer than this and only backups the changes at byte level for example.
Any pointers, thoughts, etc. much appreciated.
Michael.

I have an iMac with a 500GB hard drive and a MacBook with an 80GB hard drive. The MacBook is nearing capacity but the iMac has around 90GB of data (the Time Machine backup is around 93GB). I will likely opt for the 1TB version as I am eligable for a Government discount bringing the cost down to £303 (£183 for the 500GB version). As it's unlikely that it will be easy to upgrade the Time Capsule HDD then I'm looking at future proofing as I do not want to have to repurchase in a few years. I'm also likely to buying a second MacBook or MacBook Pro in the coming months so it does make sense.
Secondly, you can use the Time Capsule as a shared storage area as well as for the Time Machine function.

  • OK To Purchase Used Time Capsule TB1? How Important IS Time Capsule?

Naturally I would prefer to buy a new unit but I am unemployed and have not had Time Machine set up for over a year an a half. If I can grab a used on on Sleazebay and save over 100 dollars isn't it worth it as long as the unit has the box, cables, software etc.?
ALSO: Am I crazy running my Mac without a backup? I understand that it is wise to always back up but maybe I don't grasp the importance. Basically I surf the web, use IPhoto, IMovie etc. but nothing for work.
    Thanks!

I wouldn't be too hesitant to buy a used Time Capsule. The software isn't important, as there's little if anything on the disc that isn't already on your Mac.

One question: How unhappy would you be if you lost all your photos in iPhoto?

  • How big a Time Capsule do i need, I'm totally new to Mac!

Hi, how big a Time Capsule do I need in order for it to work as my backup? Let say if I bought an Imac with 2 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD and with that, bought a 2 TB Time Capsule for backup, would that be enough or would I need to buy a 3 TB Time Capsule? Thanx!

But if I buy the Imac I wrote about in my previous question (2 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD), would I then need to buy two, 2TB Time capsuls,
If you plan to fill up most of  the space on the iMac right from the start, then you might need more space. Few users ever use more than about 75-80% of the space on their computers. I was figuring you would fill up about 75% of the drive....around 1.5 TB or so.  3 TB backup would be about right.
If I buy 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD, then 2 TB Time Capsule will be enough, right?
    Correct.

That is very bad.. how old is it??
The Gen4 TC can die this way.. it is not usual but it happens.
Leave it for several hours to cool off. Do a factory reset immediately when you try to restart it.
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
Tell me exactly what the LEDs do throughout this process.
Both the main one at the front and the LED on the ethernet ports which should all flash during bootup.
If it is less than a year.. of course Apple will replace under warranty.. 2 years in some places.. Europe .. places with stronger consumer laws. If you have applecare on a computer it should still cover the TC.
I kind of doubt you are going to get this going again... but we can try.

  • How to share 1 time capsule to 2 macbooks air, using Time Machine?

How to share 1 time capsule to 2 macbooks air, using time machine??

You don't need to do anything.. both computers can use the TC and will create separate backups. It is simply designed to work with Time Machine.

  • Hi iv got a sky router downstairs and a time capsule up stairs how do i set it up so that it just extends the sky wifi and then the hard drive in the time capsule is accessible from all over the house thanks

hi iv got a sky router downstairs and a time capsule up stairs how do i set it up so that it just extends the sky wifi and then the hard drive in the time capsule is accessible from all over the house thanks

Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the back of the Sky router to the WAN (circle of dots icon) port on the back of the Time Capsule. This connection must be maintained at all times.
Then, using the setup "wizard" on your iMac illustrated below, configure the Time Capsule to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name and password that the Sky router is using.
You can get the setup wizard going in several different ways, but the simplest might be to click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen and then click on Time Capsule under the heading of New AirPort Base Station.
The wizard will open up and analyze the network, then the suggest the correct setup. The example below shows an older AirPort Express that is about to be setup in the same way. You will see a Time Capsule icon on your screen when you run the setup wizard.

new help with my mac air and airport extreme time capsule dont know how to save to time capsule and use as a external hd would like 2 store my home videos and pictures on the time machine (ONLY) as the MAC AIR has storage space limited space please help. THANK YOU.

See the info here about sharing or using the TC for data.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
It is extremely important you realise.. the Time Capsule was never designed for this.
It is a backup target for Time Machine.. that is the software on the computer that does backups.. it has no direct connection to the Time Capsule.
It has no ability to back itself up.. unlike all other NAS in the market. It is therefore likely one day you will lose all your files unless you seriously work out how to backup.
The TC is slow to spin up the hard disk and fast to spin down. iTunes and iPhoto will continually lose connection to their respective libraries.
iPhoto in particular is easy to corrupt when you move photos over wireless into the library.. once corrupted all is corrupt. A single photo will ruin it all.. so backup is utterly essential.
Time Machine cannot do backups of network drives. ie the TC. You will need a different backup software like CCC. You will then need another target to backup to..

  • What does the message mean time capsule already in use when it refueses to backup?

What does the message mean time capsule already in use when it refueses to backup?

    Just the network is cranky..
Simple first step.. restart the TC.. ie unplug the power cord.. count to 10.. plug it back in.
Second step if that fails.. restart the network.. off everything.. restart in order.. modem.. TC.. clients 2min gap.
Finally if you are prepared to fight you can load 5.6 utility onto Mountain Lion and do a disconnect all users.. or a few other ways.. turn off file sharing and turn it back on.
The issue being TM did not dismount the sparsebundle correctly.

  • Time Capsule shows with wrong name on Time Machine

I changed the name of my Time Capsule using airport. However, Time Machine still shows the old Time Capsule name, with the new name underneath. When I try to back up using this disk, it shows the following error message:
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image "/Volumes/Old Time Capsule name/My laptop name.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)."
I don't know how to fix this. I have looked everywhere. I deleted the NetworkInterfaces.plist file in Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration, and even made sure to do a secure empty trash. I even did a soft reset of the Time Capsule to the factory configuration, and renamed the Time Capsule all over again. I restarted the computer several times during this process, and yet no luck, it still shows the old Time Capsule name.
Does anybody know how to fix this? Thank you!

Ok, the MacBook is backing up now. Here is what I did:
After manually changing the name of the Time Capsule Disk as above, Time Machine was still not able to back up. I kept getting the error message
"Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image "/Volumes/Old Time Capsule name/My laptop name.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)."
The problem is that "My laptop name" Time Machine was using is wrong. I had changed the laptop name in Network Perferences>Sharing before, but it still kept looking for the wrong .sparsebundle file in the Time Capsule. I don't know why, and I even deleted the NetworkInterfaces.plist file again with no success.
I entered the Time Capsule from the Finder menu, found the .sparsebundle file with the wrong name, and manually deleted it. Finally the MacBook was able to backup. However, although the MacBook name is the same as it used to be before, and even though there was already an old .sparsebundle file with the correct name, Time Machine created a new .sparesebundle with the same name, and began an entirely new backup. I am just letting it do this backup, and then I will manually delete the old backup, so it doesn't take space on the Time Capsule. I don't need the past backups (and hope I won't swallow my words), and I am tired of dealing with this, so this will be it.

Before I answer your questions, let me first just say thank you so much for your amazing patience and helpfulness.  Whether or not we get to the bottom of this, I am very, very grateful to you.
We will get to the bottom of it, and you're quite welcome.  Don't feel you ought to know all this stuff -- none of us were born with it!
By the way, in answer to your original question, yes, you can use the Time Capsule while backups are running. There's no conflict at all.
    1)  Estimated size of full backup:  205.94 GB
    2)  My LaCie has available:  11.04 GB of 359.95 GB
That's part of the problem right there; 360 GB is a bit small to back up 206 GB.  Ordinarily, a Time Machine drive should be 2-3 times the size of the data it's backing-up, so Time Machine can keep a reasonable "depth" of old backups for you.
It looks like Time Machine is trying to do a fairly large backup, and there just isn't enough room for it.
But something doesn't quite add up.  Time Machine should have deleted all but your most recent backup, trying to make room for the new one.  But that would mean there should only be a bit less than 206 GB on the disk, not 360.
A clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • Airport Time Capsule stop send wireless signal, Airport Time Capsule stop send wireless signal

After instaling several times, alway after a while the wireless router stop sending the signal, or does not start up like in the morning, especially from a windown computer.
Out house have several computers in Windows and Mac, iphones and ipads and itouch mac book pro,
How come the router will not start up after a "night of rest"

Unfortunately, a solid amber is light is not a good sign.
Try a complete Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule using the steps below. This procedure will not affect any of the data that you have stored on the internal hard drive.
Power off the Time Capsule for 15-20 minutes or longer
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule first, and keep holding for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back in to the Time Capsule
Release the reset button after the 9-10 hold period and allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart
The Time Capsule light should normally stay solid amber for about 30 seconds and then change to a slow, blinking amber light, indicating that the Time Capsule has been reset and it can now be reconfigured.
If you try the Factory Default Reset a few times and the light stays solid amber, unfortunately the hard drive has failed, or there is an internal power supply issue with the Time Capsule.
You should take the Time Capsule to an Apple Store.....if you have one in your area.....or contact Apple Support directly to discuss your options.

If the Time Capsule is out of warranty or not covered by AppleCare, Apple will not offer repairs but there are some shops that specialize in this type of repair. See this link for more details:

  • Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage

Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage?   I want to use the drive as external, wireless storage for all of my files so all my PCs, MACs and iOS devices can access the files.  Plus, I want to use the drive for backing up my iMac via time machine.  Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?  If not, are the other suggestions on how I can do this?

Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?
It can, but is really not recommended. Sooner or later there will be a fight for space on the drive between Time Machine and the other files.
If you have plenty of free space on the drive, you can do this......but.....have you thought about how you will back up the "other" files that are stored on the Time Capsule?

  • My mac can't find time capsule, my mac can't find time capsule

my mac can't find time capsule, my mac can't find time capsule

I listed the commands.. that is how you manually mount the disk.. follow exactly the commands I gave you.
In finder use top menu, go, connect to server.
    Type in the following.
AFP://TCname or AFP://TCIpaddress (obviously you replace with the actual name or the actual IP address).
    If that fails..
    try
    SMB://TCname
    Here is the screenshot.
tardis4 being the name of my TC.
It should then ask you for your credentials.
And it should remember them in the keychain and be able to then get TM to connect.

  • Time Capsule spends about 30 minutes "preparing" for each backup.

My Time Capsule has two MacBooks backing up to it. One of them backs up fine; the other has a problem. It goes into "preparation" mode before each backup and it stays there for ridiculous lengths of time -- even if the machine was not used therefore nothing needs to be backed up. The TC hard disk just spins and spins.

You have continual messages.. No space left on device
Is your TC full..?? Are you using wireless to connect to the TC?
The time capsule has been  stuck in the "preparing for backup" stage indefinately: like months and months.
Note that Time Capsule is the hardware device.. Time Machine is the software that prepares the backup.. They are completely different.. !!
Open either the TM preference or the airport utility and tell us how much space is reported left on the drive.. or is the local hard disk full??
If you upgraded OS on the computer it can fail to properly clean up old backups and you will need to step in and erase the TC yourself. Or plug in a USB drive and set that as a new destination for the backup.

  • HT201250 My Time Capsule now will only back up one machine

I have a home network and until yesterday all was working well with my back-ups through Time Machine onto my Time Capsule.  Now all of a sudden it's only backing up one machine and not the other, and none of my backups done previously on the second machine are showing.  How do I fix this???

It means that there are bugs in Mavericks.
    The down and dirty fix:
Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten slowly
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes and try another backup
    Please report on your results
Or, post back if want to try a bit more elegant "fix"
