What size to make sparse bundle?

I want to back up my Users folder to an encrypted sparse bundle, for archiving purposes. If the Users folder is, say, 40 GB, what size should I make the sparse bundle? The same size, or larger? If so, how much larger?
Also, if I make the sparse image much larger, say, 150 GB, I understand that only 40 GB will be allocated to it, but if the drive it is on only has, say, only 50 GB of free space, will I still be able to open it?
Thank you,
David

  if the runmode <> "Author" then
    (the stage).rect =  (the desktopRectList)[1]
    (the stage).drawRect = (the desktopRectList)[1]
  end if
Is the quick & dirty way, but the rescale drops the fps.

    OK this may sound like a really stupid question and it probably is.... my apologies in advance.
    I have successfully created an iOS app for the iPad but want to make a phone version now... what size should I make my stage for it? I want it to work on iphone 5 and 4 series?

  • What size for my ebook?

    I am creating an ebook and am wondering what size to make the pages. Someone suggested 6" by 8" in case people want to print it which makes sense, but I don't know if there are other factors, and what is standard.
    Any suggestions?

    Thank you so much for your reply! I just want to double check - and get your opinion, since I'm forever paranoid.  This quote is from Apple Support regards the memory for the build of my iMac:
    4GB (two 2GB) of 1333MHz DDR3 memory
    Configurable to 16GB, only at the Apple Online Store.
    But I don't have to worry about being confined to 4GB sticks - I can go ahead and install what I've bought? - Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1333 MT/s (PC3-10600) CL9 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Modules CT2CP102464BF1339
    Sorry - I've just had so many issues in the past, I want to just make sure I have bought the right memory.

  • How to limiting the size of an existing Sparse Bundle for Time Machine?

    There seems to be a solution for locking the size of a new sparse bundle to be used for Time Machine backups (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2383738?tstart=0).  However, I have a Time Machine sparse bundle with a year's worth of history that is getting very large and I would like to limit its size.  Is there a way to constrain the size of an existing sparse bundle without trashing it.
    Appying the suggested techniques"
    hdiutil resize -size 300g xyz.sparsebundle
    and
    SetFile -a L PATHTOSPARSEBUNDLE/Info.*
    on an existing sparse bundle somehow corrupts it and TM wants to start from scratch.
    A method for constraining the size of a TM sparse bundle without trashing it would be very appreciated.

    budden10, please try this:
    Disconnect the external drive to simulate it not working or having failed
    Open Time Machine on your Mac and wait a few minutes for your backups to load fully
    Go back in time and select a date when you were backing up the external drive
    Now look at the Finder window and locate your Mac on the left side of the window under DEVICES
    Click on your Mac
    What do you see in the window there just to the right?

  • Loaded Mountain Lion and time capsule no longer works, airport utility can't be configured, back ups have stopped, sparse bundle in use errors occur, what a mess!!!!

    Should Airport Utility now be defunct for my time capsule because I have upgraded OS to Mountain Lion? I have tried every fix I can think of but AU will not set up. I'm also getting repeated time machine back up failures and now I have a new "sparsebundleinuse" error which is totally useless to me, I have no idea what a sparse bundle is, I have no idea what it's suddenly being used by and there's no information to say what to do about it. Apple is killing me here!!!

    I've tried to but on the install for Airport Utility 6, after the download I get through the introduction then the license then I get "airport utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported" and that's it, no more options!?

  • What is Pro.Sparse bundle?

    I am getting an erros message saying the time capsule back up failed becaise the pro.sparse bundle is already in sue.  What is this and how do I correct?

    The sparse bundle is the container your backups are stored in (when made over a network).
    See #C12 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.

    Hi,
    I am creating a web product video but don't know what size i should make it. Thanks.

    Where will the video be stored online?  Youtube?  On your own server?
    How will it fit into the web page it's being displayed on?  Full screen?  In a little sidebar?
    Will the video ever need to be distributed in any other way, like DVD or Bluray?

  • What size (dimensions and ppi) images sould I make so they fit into the 9 x 11.25 ibook?

    What size (dimensions and ppi) images sould I make in Photo Shop so they fit into the 9 x 11.25 ibook? (I am a professional photographer who captures in RAW).
    I have sent a number of sizes to iPhoto for use in an iBook and they all are too big for the software so I get cropped images even when zoom slider is at it's smallest.
    This is very frustrating. I am on a dealine. Please help.
    John

    Is your question about a printed book? If so, you likely want to redirect your question to either the iPhoto or Apertuare forums, depending on the software you'll be using to submit your book for printing to Apple.
    This forum is actually focussed on the iBooks application for reading (and creating) electronic books for Apple's iOS devices such as the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.
    Good luck!

  • Guys, any idea what is the exact thing to put  to resize or enlarge the image size  to make the phot

    Guys, any idea what is the exact thing to put  to resize or enlarge the image size  to make the photo larger or bigger when uploading in Facebook?? thanks

    You could check "Resize to Fit" and specify the exact dimensions you want in the Lightroom Export dialog box.
    But a word to the wise ... don't bother ... there is a maximum size that Facebook allows for photos, and you'd be wasting your time specifying anything reasonably large in Lightroom's Export dialog box.

  • Why won't my MacBook Pro backup to Time Machine (on my 1TB Time Capsule) when I'm running Lion OSX 10.7.5.? What does it mean when this error pops up: MacBook Pro.sparse bundle could not be assessed (error - 1).???? Please help me fix this!

    Apparently I am not the only person having this problem as I have seen many threads about it. If ANYONE OUT THERE CAN HELP ME, I WOULD SINCERELY APPRECIATE IT.
    I try and run my backup as I always have, but it HAS NEVER COMPLETED SINCE I UPGRADED TO LION. As many mentions, I updated from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 hoping that would fix my issue and it didn't help at all. I also unistalled WD SmartWare to no avail. It's really starting to annoy me since I have as much money invested in my MacBook Pro and Time Capsule as I do in my car....
    I have more than enough space on the Time Capsule, but Time Machine is still failing and coming up with an error message: MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be assessed (error - 1).
    Someone, anyone, please help!

    . . . sparse bundle could not be accessed (error -1)

  • What size should i save my pictures to make a good high def. DVD?

    Ok, I am using Elements 10 with Premere 10 to create a DVD high definition movie of our trip to Rome to display on our hi def tv. What I want to know is what size should I save my pictures after fixing them. The JPEGS are usually saved to around 2 mb while the NEF's are saved around 6-11 mb's.  I am afraid that the 2 mb files will not retain enough data to show well on the high def TV and maybe the 11 mb pictures may be overkill resulting in long rendering times and larger movie sizes. Anyone have any information on this. Both the Elements 10 and Premere 10 manuals don't address this. The only thing I could find was that they support up to 4086 x 4086 size pictures. Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    I am not an expert on this subject but since nobody has replied yet, I thought I would give you my current thoughts on the subject so then someone can either confirm it or shoot me down in flames.
    If we are talking about a HD TV, they have a screen resolution of about 1920 x 1080 or 1360 x 768 so if your images are greater than that, something has to do some down sizing.
    I think that a normal DVD can has a limitation on size of 720 x 480 (NTSC) or 720 x 576 (PAL). To get a greater resolution than that you need to talk about Blu-ray.
    The important thing to think about is the aspect ratio. The widescreen TVs are 16:9 and your photos are probably 4:3. If you want a full screen picture without black margins each side then I suggest that you do some cropping first.
    I tend to crop to 16:9 aspect ratio (using crop tool) and then resize the image to 1920 x 1080 (using image resize). I use a larger size if I know I want to use pan & zoom effects. I use that size, even though some pixels will be lost, just in case I switch to Blu-ray in the future and it might save a bit of work then.
    Hope that helps (and is correct)
    Brian

  • HT3275 Time machine cannot backup due to "The backup disk image "/Volume/Data/Dave's Macbook Pro."sparse bundle" is already in use." Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it??

    My time machine is sending me a message; "The backup disk image "/Volume/Data/Dave's Macbook Pro "sparse bundle" is already in use". As a result, the time machine cannot complete a backup. Any suggestions?

    Look at the more like this column on the right.. this is the most common problem reported here.
    You need to restart the TC.. that is all..
    Pull out the power cord.. count to 10.. plug in power cord.
    There are a few occasions where this fails.. see C12 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

  • Limit size sparse bundle on airport time capsule

    Hi there
    I want to resize my sparse bundle file on my ATC. I've names the ATC: Airport Time Capsule van John"  and the spars bundle file "Macbook Pro van John" which is on the "data" root of the ATC.
    My wife has an MB Air and is also filling up my ATC andn I want to resize the MBP to 950G and the MBA to 350G.
    Can anyone tell me how to do this ? both haven been backing up for about 6 months but do not exceed the value's I want to limit them to.
    I'm running OS X 10.9.4 and it's a 3 TB ATC.
    thx for the help in advance....
    John

    That is probably a new addition to Mavericks.
    I have just tested it on Mountain Lion and it still works as per Pondini's instructions.
    Pondini mentions that it is variable how each version of the Mac OS treats the sparsebundle.. I would not be at all surprised if apple modified things in Mavericks.. Find someone who still runs Mountain Lion on their computer and use that.

  • Deleting Sparse Bundle File

    I'm running out of disk space on my Mac Book Air. I have used 'What Size' and it shows me that I have 36gb of data as sparse bundle file.
    I have read online that various users has encountered problems after deleting sparse file to make space available.
    Is it recommended to delete those files or am I asking for trouble?
    Thanks

    The sparse bundle you found in WhatSize is indeed a FileVault Home, and the fact that it is currently in /Users/.nelsonesparon (with a leading period) rather than in /Users/nelsonesparon (without the leading period) indicates that you are currently logged into that very account. All the files and folders that currently appear to be in your "Home Folder" - your Documents, Music, Movies, etc - are actually stored in the "bands" of that sparse bundle.
    Bottom line - Don't touch it!
    But if the sparse bundle containing all your "Home" files is 36GB, and you are "running out of disk space", what accounts for the rest of your HD space? How big is the HD? Do you have other user accounts? Does the space used by files and folders as shown in WhatSize "add up" to the Used space on the HD?

  • A sparse image or sparse bundle question in relation to a NAS

    Hi all,
    I want to create a sparse image or bundle on my Synology DS713+ NAS to store my iPhoto and Aperture libraries.
    The reason for a sparse image or bundle lies in the fact that both iPhoto and Aperture very much like a solid Mac Journal formatted drive to operate on.
    Because I use an iMac and a MacBookPro I want these libraries available for both computers, and while they reside on a NAS they are 'automatically' backed up, and acessible to both computers.
    I've tried storing the iPhoto library on the NAS directly (not Mac formatted but some Linux format, nót FAT32 anyway), but this was performing very poor (copying the library took hours and hours), and I've read on many NAS and Synology forums that this is not the way to go. The best solution I've read from these forums is to create a Sparse Image or Bundle on the NAS to benefit fully form an iPhoto or Aperture Library.
    Now I have created a Sparse Image, and mounted it, and moving (copying) an iPhoto Library to it is done in a snap (amazing).
    But having the Sparse Image mounted on my iMac, I cannot acess it on my MacBookPro unless I first umount it on the iMac, and then mount it on the MacBook.
    Is there a way that such a Sparse Image can be mounted on more than one computer at the same time. In my case, mounted on both the iMac and the MacBook?
    Or must it specifically be a Sparse Bundle to accomplish this, or maybe some Terminal wizzardry to get this done?

    I'm a little confused here, but what you did answer did help quite a bit. Thanks for that. Anyway, I'm having problems adding to the array. It keeps telling me 'cannot find symbol - method add (double). I'm assuming that this method should be defined in the AuditRecord class, which has been given to me but there seems to exist no method in that class called 'add'. I suppose I could make one, but my professor said that we shouldn't be modifying the AuditRecord class at all, which leads me to believe I'm on the wrong track again. Anyway, here's my updated code in the hopes that it's a simple mistake that I'm making once again:
    public class AuditTrail
        private ArrayList<AuditRecord> auditTrail;
        //ArrayList<AuditRecord> auditTrail = new ArrayList<AuditRecord>();
        //private double amount;
    public AuditTrail()
       auditTrail = new ArrayList<AuditRecord>();
    * Add a record
    public boolean add(double amount)
           if (amount > 0)
           //create auditrecord and add to audit trail (array list)
           AuditRecord auditTrail = new AuditRecord(amount);
           //auditTrail.AuditRecord(amount);
           auditTrail.add(amount);
           System.out.println("Amount of "+amount+" added.");
           return true;// similar behavior to a collection
        else
            System.out.println("Invalid deposit amount.");
            return false;
    }
