What software instruments duplicate  Intentional Heartache

What software instruments duplicate/replicate the instruments used on Dwight Yoakam's "Intentional Heartache"? I would appreciate it if you could point me at the software instruments able to replicate any of the sounds in that wonderful song. The first three would be great, but I would appreciate any of it.
If you google on Dwight Yoakam Blame The Vain you will quickly reach a music video on Intentional Heartache. This is Yoakam's own web site.
I will get you the URL if you want it. If I go to Safari right now to get it, I will probably lose this post. Should have gotten the URL first.

Are you talking about the guitar? Sounds like a Telecaster through a Fender Twin Tweed amp. Getting that sound via Software Instruments will be tough. JamPack 3 contains a Software Instrument called "Twangy Electric", but not sure how close that gets.
Try using the Software Instrument "Clean Electric" and add amp simulation "American Clean". Then try tweaking the settings until you get close enough. Alot of that "sound" in Intentional Heartache is guitar technique and is difficult to do, and especially difficult to emulate.

  • What is the easiest way to mix and match drum samples from Logic software instruments

I have been using Logic software instruments (EXS 24 drums kits) for a while. I know how to edit indiviual zones in a drum kit but I would like to know how to copy and paste multiple zones all at once from one kit to another so that I can create a hybrid ESX24 drum kit with my favorite snares, kicks, toms etc. Is there a good tutorial video showing how to do this?

so that I can create a hybrid ESX24 drum kit with my favorite snares, kicks, toms etc.
To my opinion the Environment "Mapped Instrument" object is designed exactly for what you want. You can load even different Software (drum) Instrument kits into say EXS, Addictive Drums, UB etc. Patch multiple cables to each Software Drum Instrument instance, open the Mapped Instrument and assign the pads "cable" outputs in the Cable column - this is one of the most elegant ways in Logic...

What must I do to play a software instrument from UltimateSoundBank with MIDI in Logic Pro? I can´t find it in the Logic library.

Everyone reading your posts here is just another MacBook Pro user. We're all volunteers, not Apple employees. No one here can speak for Apple.
In my personal opinion, buying Apple products in a country where Apple has no stores and no corporate presence is a risk that the buyer takes knowingly. I don't think it's a wise risk, and I don't recommend that anyone take it. A small percentage of the products sold anywhere are going to have problems, and it makes more sense to buy an inferior product that can at least be serviced locally than to buy a superior product that may have to be sent thousands of miles for repair if anything ever goes wrong with it.

  • What happened to all the software instruments?

I recently got a macbook pro w/ garageband 4.1.1 (I used to have gb 2.0.2) Did they get rid of most of the software instruments for this version? For example, the only guitar that is available is "steel string acoustic", whereas with 2.0.2 there were about 12 guitars to chose from. What's up with this? If they did get rid of them, is there somewhere I can get these instruments from? Thanks!

You have to install them from your #2 install disk that came with your mac.

  • I record a midi keyboard track and it sounds fine as Im recording it, however, it won't play back in time no matter what I do, seems awfully useless to have all these "great software instruments" and not even be able to use them, one problem after another

I record a midi keyboard track along with a song, it sounds great, then, when i go to mix, playback, the midi track is behind the beat and out of sync.. i've tried every setting I can think of.. the strangest thing is that I've used this exact keyboard in the past with this exact computer, running the same version of logic pro, and it worked fine, now it just doesn't work.. it seems an awful waste to have all these "great software instruments" but they are essentially useless now... it is beyond frustrating to have this so-called "great technology" that doesn't even work and to spend more time TRYING to get it to work than actually doing some work with it...

After re-reading the first post, I don't think it would be quantize, either, sorry about that.
There are a couple more places to look:
Look at the highlights, one is for track, one is for region.  Notice how I have it on MIDI thru (top part).  That has a delay value.  When you select a region, you can have a different value there, as well.  Also, the Track part has a place with a delay value.  These are three delay values that are in addition to the audio preference Recording delay.

  • In Logic Pro 9, how many midi controlled software instruments do you get...?

In Logic Pro 9, how many midi controlled software instruments do you get and is there possibility to download more as it says 40 on the programs info on the Mac Store, as i intend to compose on it but with only 40 instruments it's not really worth it.
So i was just wondering whether it let you download more for free.
    Thanks for reading

Yes: I too am interested in the software instruments available in Logic Pro: one has to be a bit wary of the jam packs because there don't seem to be many solo instruments included. But I looked at the Logic screen in an Apple store the other day, and it worked like GarageBand in
this respect: you created a new track choosing the software instrument option and a whole lot of instruments came
up in a column on the right: lots of solo wind instruments, plenty of keyboards and guitars of course and not very many solo strings, only one violin, in the world music subsection under Irish fiddle. Yehudi Menuhin
where are you when we need you?
What I've been trying to find out is which part of the purchase does this long list of software instruments arrive with, because it's basically the only reason
I'm interested - I get on fine with gb but it
Just hasn't got enough instruments, and as I say the jam packs don't seem
to resolve this ? Or do they? Could someone please help
    me with this?

  • Software instruments not playing

I had to reload my hard drive after a re-format, in doing so my GB has been working funny. My software instruments play only as a keyboard, with slight variation despite what instrument is selected. It does this with or without the midi keyboard connected. I reinstalled it from factory disk and the problem still exists. Ideas?

Oops, I didn't read your entire sentence, I missed the last bit. I actually didn't realize you could use the onscreen keyboard while the Create DialogBox was open.
In fact, naughty GB programmers, that's a Modal Dialog, you shouldn't be able to use the onscreen keyboard while it's open.
But as you correctly posted, it does work

  • Adding to the loops folder/software instrument folder/components etc

i was screwing my whole GB system by messing with the entire folders labelled
like instrument library (dragging in a new one replacing the old one).
thus i kept getting "cant find application bundle".
the RIGHT/way to add software instruments, sf2's, components ( AU plug ins )
is to go to the folder that houses them and delete or add them there.
To add loops you drag the new loops over the loop area on the GB interface.
You do not replace whole loop folders with new ones. If i buy third party
or update computers that have additional software instruments i get them by
going to the exact folder that houses the SI's and add them there. Is this all correct? because this may sound basic but i have thousands of loops and alot of SI's and i must learn how to add these to additional computers or the same one?
    please instruct me.

And of course if you do that to many times it locks you out of your phone or you have to log into your email to unlock your phone. This is a minor issue all you have to do is unplug your device then unlock it. But I felt maybe Verizon needs to know.
These are some of the issues I have noticed again would like Verizon to know about them. Thanks for taking the time to read. I really hope I explained this so you could understand.
This is the only real issue I have had with the phone and I am not sure why this happens. I ended up changing mine to the code entry lock, which works well. My fear is getting completely locked out and having to do a factory reset. Other that this, I have had no other problems with mine.

  • How to convert mp3 software instrument samples to format garageband can use

    Hi and thanks in advance.
I'm using GB '08 on OSX 10.4.11 w/ a G4 MDD. ( Sorry folks,  This is the setup that I have and cannot buy a new computer or software at this time)
I'm pretty new too DAW and all of this but want to compose music with traditional orchestra sounds as well as what GB offers.
I have found Muse Score and I can get some pretty good results for writing but I want to expand the software instrument voices that GB has.
    I found  http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/thesoundexchange/make_music/samples/library/
and they have some pretty good sounding software instruments for free, except that they are in mp3 format.
I did some reading and see that GB understands a different format for this. I put some of the sounds into the correct GB folder as a test and result is of course no go. I see that GB uses exs and cst files in addition to wav and aff files.
How do I convert mp3 software instrument samples to the formats garageband can use? Is there a way? What would I need to do this?
    Thanks again..

The first step would probably be to convert the samples into AIFF files, that's what GB's sample files are in.
But so far that's only a collection of samples - what you need is a sampler file that tells the software which sample to trigger with which key (the .exs files in GB's instrument library).
Since your software is old, t works pretty well with soundfonts (the latest versions have problems), so you might try this software to create them:
    http://sonicamigos.com/polyphontics/

P.S.: The softare costs $60, but you can create 10 instruments for free.

  • Third party software instrument not outputting to right speaker?

Hi there. I know that third party support is not something I can expect to get much of here, but I figured I'd see if anyone had any suggestions anyway. I'm new to GarageBand, and am using the '8 bit' plugin from a Japanese band called YMCK (http://www.ymck.net/english/download/index.html). The plugin does seem a little buggy or incompatible with my system/GarageBand because I often get no sound and have to restart GarageBand, or (and I warn you if you try it) occasionally I'll get a loud, annoying tone until I restart the app as well.
Normally, however, it does what it's supposed to except for the fact that I am not getting any audio output from the right speaker for software instruments using this plugin, regardless of the panning I'm using. This is just kind of strange and I'm wondering if maybe there's something I'm missing, or perhaps someone else has used this plugin before (or would be willing to try it). Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    No love for the newbie?

  • How to: Slide in violin software instrument?

    Hi,
I'm wondering how you guys make the Violin (software instrument) in slide mode? Maybe I'm using the wrong term, but what I'm trying to question is how to slide up from C1 to C2? I'm trying to edit it via Hyper Draw > Pitch Bend, but not works!
Please suggest your precious idea, appreciate!

    Jim,
    Thanks!
The idea above might changed the whole instrument to that pitch/octave then? So, how do slide it from C1 to C2 then? Possible to hyper draw the EXS pitch bend to fit the need above?
    Thanks again!

  • Live Recording with mics and Software Instruments

Has anyone used the Software Instruments in GB to play live, while recording the Software Instruments direct and live (Real Instruments) as well?
I'm thinking about getting a FirePod or similar, to record my band live using several mics and playing and recording Software Instruments all at once. I'm concerned that this set up might have too much latency and make the Software Instruments not playable with my band live, and perhaps all this might make my iMac G5 bog down.
Anyone have any experiences with any or all of this kind of use of GarageBand with an audio/MIDI interface?
    iMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hey Hang,
Sorry if I'm talking in circles. That post was early!
I'd like to be able to use the built-in Software Instruments live and record that MIDI as well as the live tracks at the same time. However, I could deal with using my own keyboards for the live sounds and just record the MIDI from them while recording the live tracks too, if that makes the system work. For instance, if the part I wanted was a piano, and the Software Instrument piano used too much processor power, I could "record" with a smaller instrument that wasn't such a hog. Then, in mixing, I'd use the Software Instrument I wanted for the keyboard part. Live, my real keyboard could provide the piano for all to hear.
    Am I making sense yet?
I suppose one thing I could do is something I was thinking of doing already. I could get one of the $40 MIDI-to-USB interfaces to record with the band. Right now, I'm just using a stereo mic set up to record stereo into GB. I could add MIDI and see what happens. Heck, I could enable 6 more real instrument tracks at the same time and see what happens! Then I would know it was possible on the iMac at least.

  • Unable for some reason create a Software Instrument

In the Environment I suddenly can't create a software instrument when I go down to New / Channel Strip. The option is greyed out.
Instead I have to go to Arrange and choose New Track. Then choose software instrument from the drop-down menu. That creates a track, which appears in the Mixer as an instrument. I then cut it and paste it into the Environment. Now I have the software instrument where I want it. But I can't help but think this is crazy and wrong!!
I've just bought Virus TI and am confused by how best to set it up. Access support tell me to set it up using New Track/ multitimbral and go that route. The Logic tutorial (made while Logic 7 was around) tells us to set it up using the Environment (which is what I'm used to), make a software instrument, copy it 15 times and make the MIDI channels in ascending order.
    Which is the best way?

  • Software Instruments suddenly lose volume

I'm using LE8 with the Jam Pack Rhythm Section to do MIDI drums and bass on my album, but as of last week, I started encountering a very weird problem. I'm not doing anything differently with the program than I have done in the past, but now for some reason, the software instruments will suddenly lose all volume at random times. This seems to be somehow related to recording, since it always seems to occur (most inconveniently) when I'm right in the middle of recording a take, and thus I can no longer hear what I'm playing. It doesn't always affect all software instrument tracks. Usually it affect only a few of them or sometimes only the one I'm recording to. Sometimes I can clear up the problem by changing the instrument to something else and then changing it back again. Other times, the only way to fix it is to create a whole new track and drag the MIDI events onto the new track. This is incredibly frustrating and has slowed my productivity down to a crawl, to the point where I'm considering whether I should bite the bullet and convert everything I've done so far into another program. I like Logic-- I just want it to stop flaking out on me!
I've tried playing with the "Independent Monitoring Level" setting, which ostensibly allows setting a different level for record and playback, but that doesn't seem to do anything with software instrument tracks.

Yes, I understand that software instrument regions are MIDI regions. But no MIDI tracks are recorded yet, so there are no existing MIDI events to play back. In this case, the drop-out is happening during the process of recording the first software instrument track in the project. In other words, the monitoring volume on the track that is being recorded will suddenly drop off to nothing as I'm recording, and when this happens, I can't hear the notes I'm playing on my MIDI controller anymore. That was essentially the problem I had with the previous session as well, but for some reason, I was able to make it go away by tying together the overlapping MIDI regions in that session. There are no MIDI regions in this session yet, though, so there's nothing to tie together.
When this drop-out occurs, the faders do not change. Also, the volume of MIDI events that are recorded after the drop-out remains normal. This leads me to believe that the drop-out is not due to some sort of spurious MIDI event. The other key thing is that this doesn't happen every time. More like every other time. If it were a MIDI event, then either the faders or the subsequently recorded MIDI events would reflect the change, but they don't. And again, it is often (but not always) the case that changing the track to a new software instrument and then changing it back clears up the problem.

  • Is it possible to automate software instrument parameters in a MIDI region? And alias the region with the automation?

I am trying to track down a detail about how automation works in Logic Pro X.
What I want to know is:
    1. Can I draw control-point curves (and smoothly bend them) in a MIDI region to automate a software instrument parameter (and/or smart controls)?
    2. Can a region containing this automation be aliased and reused around the timeline (without the automation points being duplicated)?
If this is possible, can someone please post a couple of screenshots - a MIDI region with MIDI Draw automating (for example) the cutoff of an ES M, and screenshots of aliases around the timeline?
    thanks!!
    H

First, I'd recommend going to Track>other>new with same instrument.  This gives you a blank lane to make a region with no notes.
Now, there are two strategies: do some track automation and then convert it to region. You can go into the local view menu and find the option to view MIDI automation and still adjust it.  Now you can make aliases of that region. You need to be careful of accidentally writing new track automation, which is easy to do and can happen if you have 'move automation with regions' on for instance.  If you make sure and delete all the track auto for this parameter you should be good (the line should be barely visible black, if it is highlighted in color, that means there is at least one active node at the beginning).  If the parameter freaks out, instead of following your curve, you can bet there is track automation fighting with the region automation, you might need to tell the automation menu in the track header to show the parameter in question.  None of this is a big deal and after doing it once you'll see.
The other strategy is to assign a controller to a parameter (or use the quick MIDI things on certain instruments - you mentioned ES2, which has that) and you can use the hyper draw in the piano roll.  The view tip from the first strategy still works so you can edit the automation in the arrange.  I prefer the first strategy because the knob you are automating will still move.
If you go to audio tuts plus (something like that) you can find a tut on the first method that's a few years old, and from Logic 9.  Basically the same, you just have to look through different menus for everything.
