What software is needed for system recovery? (cont'd)

What software is needed for system recovery of a Toshiba Satellite Pale8u-02p01D (also known as L355D-S7901) running Vista?
If I can just get the name/number for the recover software I will get it from eBay.
Thanks!

If you want to look for that on eBay, look for the recovery discs for the model above. I doubt you'll find them there.
You can order them from Toshiba, of course.
   Order Toshiba Recovery Media
And you might get them cheaper from a third-party vendor.

  • MSI 1950pro VIVO. What software I need for video-in?

    Hi.
I am currently using MSI radeon1950pro pcie card. It has VIVO connector too. I tried yesterday to plug my Playstation2 to the card as I dont have TV, well i didint get to play as i dont know what software i should use for that. I installed ati's suplied radeon1950 pro driver package. I also tried to install wdm driver, and some multimedia center stuff, which promptly notices that it will only work/install with all-in-wonder card.
I also tried with Dscaler and AMcap, but neither of them can find any video capture driver or so.
I would need to get analog videosignal opened in some program that can handle fullscreen mode, so I could play my Playstation trough my PC screen
Someone who has done something similar, or just done something with video in pls tell me what software I need..

    I have catalyst 6.11 installed.
I have also installed WDM driver, at least the installer goes trough.
I have installed also avivo decoders/encoder files from ati, in addition to this i have installed multimedia center, and some extra kits for it. Like dao/mac, dvd/dtv decoder and some encoder package. I have installed practically all files that i can find from ati.
Firstly i notice that multimedia center installation creates zero shortcuts, so finding this software is bit hard. Or if it did not install anything, the installer didint notify me, just quit .. cant be sure about this.
I have also installed Dscaler (tv viewer, that should be able to read video-in, atelast from nvidia cards). I have also installed microsoft media encoder, which is somekind stream capture tool / video encoding tool.
Problem is that no software detects that this card has VIVO.
I need to know how to get some damn driver installed so that the video-in comes as visible capture device and then some program to show it.
Is this somehow related to fact, that ati is offering different driver kit for 1950pro cards? I tried with those drivers yesterday, but they didint help at all.
    am I doing wrong?

  • Does anyone know what software is needed for an HP A799 POS receipt printer?

I'm trying to use the A799 receipt printer to open the register drawer. The software I have does not have a configuration for this, so I'm guessing I do not have the right software. It prints fine, just doesn't open the drawer.
    This question was solved.

    I found the solution!
    SOLUTION:
Download and install HP USB Receipt Printer Firmware Upgrade (sp34185) from the following URL: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&swItem=ir-454...
Finish the printer installation by completing the following steps:
    1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Printer and Faxes > Add printer .
    2. During the Add Printer Wizard process, you will be asked to select a port. In the drop-down list, select a USBxxx (Virtual Printer Port) port.
    3. Browse to the location where the printer files are located, and select TPG A794 CD#1 Full and install the printer.
    4. Once the test page is printed the drawer will open automatically. NOTE: The TPG A794 CD#1 version generates a pulse to cash drawer 1 after each document, opening the cash drawer.
Even though this is listed as a solution for the RP5000, it worked perfectly on the RP3000 using the HP A799 printer.
    NOTE:
The TPG A794 CD#1 version generates a pulse to cash drawer 1 after each document, opening the cash drawer.

Audacity 1.2.5 is an audio editor in which you can assemble and edit your recordings: it's free. I don't think it would burn CDs - you would have to reimport the finished recording into iTunes and burn from there.
Amadeus Lite is $24.99 in the Mac App Store and is in my opinion a better product: it can burn your audio CD directly.
If this is a one-off job you might as well use Audacity: if you are planning on doing this sort of thing at all often you would probably be better off either with Amadeus Lite or Amadeus Pro ($59.99) though this latter may well be over-specified for you as it includes multi-track editing.

  • How do I port my Windows Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files to the MAC?  What software is needed on the MAC to use them?  Thanks.

How do I port my Windows Word, Excel, and Powerpoint files to the MAC?  What software is needed on the MAC to use them?  Thanks.

You can certainly use iWork, though I hesitate to recommend it to a seasoned Windows user simply because it would add another level of the unfamiliar with which you would have to gain familiarity. The iWork applications are certainly very competent and in most respects both easy to use and surprisingly powerful. They are not 100% compatible however, though that typically manifests itself in document formatting issues rather than anything more significant.
I have never attempted to import emails from a Windows system into MacOS - other than in Outlook connected to an Exchange server, thus not really an issue at all. I doubt that the Mail app in MacOS can import directly, but of course you could always set the account(s) up on the Mac and then forward emails you want to keep from the PC. Not elegant, but it works. Virtually any Windows document or file, whichever application created it, can be opened or converted for use on a Mac, and using both systems on my desk each day I rarely see any issues switching stuff from one machine to the other. You may stumble over one or two issues, but likely not significant.
In switching platforms there will be some inevitable issues, not so much with being able to import your stuff because there's usually a workaround or a utility that can help, but just with getting familiar with the platform and the differences between Windows and MacOS that can obscure their similarities. From time to time the support community here hears from a user who has found the migration very problematic and regrets it, but for the most part the phrase 'I should have done this years ago...' is rather more prevalent!

  • Help needed with system recovery Satellite L300-149

    Hi
    We have a Satellite L300-149.
Was running really slowly so wanted to reset it to factory settings.
Did the 'press F12 when starting, put disk in' etc etc BUT have a horrible feeling that I put a disk in that actually belonged to a different Toshiba we used to use a U300.
The 'give away' was that the user manual for the U300 is now on the desktop on the Satellite :-/
I hoped that this wouldn't be a major problem BUT the F8 key has now disappeared making it impossible to connect to the internet.
I looked online and read that the L300 sometimes doesn't come with a disk as the info is kept on a separate part of the hard drive so hoped I could reset it back to factory settings again but when I click F2 on start up and go to the option to restore it, noting happens.
    Can anyone please help??????

    Hi
    Forget the HDD recovery now
You have recovered the system using another disk and this has deleted the HDD recovery image files. So this option is NOT possible!
You are right the L300 and all other notebooks are not delivered with Recovery disks.
The recovery disk has to be created using the preinstalled software called Recovery Disk Creator. But this is also NOT possible because you removed the preinstalled system and the files which are needed for such recovery disk are not available anymore!
But if everything work properly except of the WLan FN + F8 key, then I would recommend to install only the Wlan driver. I think the key does not work because the right WLan driver is not installed.
I think the Satellite L300-149 supports the Wlan Realtek RTL8187B chip.
So install the right Wlan driver which you can find here:

  • What software is recommended for the maintenance of mac?

What software is recommended for the maintenance of mac?

    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; all should be made directly from the original data. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the App Store or Software Update preference pane (depending on the OS version), you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.
Keeping up to date is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible. Incompatibility with third-party software is by far the most common cause of trouble with system updates.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, such stuff is useless or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.
The more heavily promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for, and doesn't change the way other software works.
Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception to the above rule. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction.  Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
    4. Beware of malware. Malware is malicious software that circulates on the Internet. This kind of attack on OS X used to be so rare that it was hardly a concern, but it's now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must come directly from the developer's website. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from the web, without your having requested it, should go straight into the Trash. A web page that tells you that your computer has a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with it, is a scam.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
    5. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem.
While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage use and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move seldom-used large files to secondary storage.
    6. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
Let go of the Windows mentality that every computer needs regular downtime maintenance such as "defragging" and "registry cleaning." Those concepts do not apply to the Mac platform. The machine should not be a focus of your attention. You shouldn't have to think about it at all. It should be a transparent, almost unnoticeable tool by means of which you communicate, work, and play. If you want a computer that depends on you to keep going, use a PC.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

No power adaptor is needed as the power units are auto-switching. But you will need wall outlet adaptors such as you will find in Apple's World Travel Kit, at AAA stores, and other vendors.
