What sort of Standby DB is this?
In OTN's RMAN forum, i read about the below mentioned post on cloning by creating a 'Standby' Db
Is this method of Cloning old ?
The below step doesn't actually 'switch' to the Primary Standby DB and redirect all sessions to this standby DB. It is just the last step of cloning
alter database commit to switchover to primary; So, technically this is not a standby DB.Is it?
No its not, its a copy of a database.
You could do a similar thing with a cold backup.
If you want to clone a database for Data Guard you need to add something like this to your RMAN backup:
backup current controlfile for standby format '/u01/backups/PRIMARY/sb_t%t_s%s_p%p';
Note the for standby
Cloning for Data Guard works great and is the basis for my recovery method "Loss of Standby"

What sort of dial-up modems does one use with a "Bionic Desk Lamp" iMac?
Yes, I still use dial-up (and indeed, my aging Performa 5215 is still on its factory 14.4 modem).
I'm planning on buying a used G4 iMac on eBay (see my posting in the OS 9 forum for related questions), but what sort of dial-up modem do I use, that will work in both OS 9 and OS X?Outside of perhaps a handful of top-end machines, printing on special media, I've never seen inkjet output that looked any better than MicroDry output on comparable media. Moreover:
1. With the exception of hot-wax-jet systems, inkjet output is soggy, and takes time to become waterproof (assuming that ever happens without spraying varnish on the page); MicroDry output is as dry and waterproof as laser output.
2. Inkjet has the highest cost of consumables of any printing technology ever devised. If you use your printer like crazy, you rapidly empty the often-expensive cartridges. If you don't use it like crazy, the often-expensive cartridges clog and/or dry out. By contrast, laser toner and MicroDry ribbons have a once-opened shelf-life that is whole orders of magnitude greater than that of inkjet cartridges, and the only way to ruin them is to (laser) print so many blank pages you overflow the waste-toner receptacle, or (MicroDry) break the ribbon (and that can be fixed with about half an hour's work)
3. MicroDry is one of the few printing technologies that can print metallic colors and opaque white, and can also automatically varnish their output. The more advanced MicroDry models also have a dye sublimation mode (with optional varnish) that allows them to double as the cheapest-to-run dyesubs available.
The ALPS MicroDry printer line flopped in the marketplace for two reasons. First, they didn't offer PCL or PostScript, even as an option, and (especially in dyesub mode) host-based RIPping is a long, slow, memory-intensive process (that's been known to crash my long-suffering Performa 5215). Second, ALPS has absolutely no name recognition in the United States except among engineers and technicians. This meant that they were fighting an uphill battle just to get anybody to look at their products.
Moreover, the few attempts ALPS made at strategic alliances (to overcome the lack of name recognition) were with a company (Citizen) that isn't known for much beyond digital watches and (maybe) hand calculators, and a company (Epson) that had strong financial reasons to suppress MicroDry, color laser, and anything else that competed with inkjet.
On that last note, may I point out that when a color laser printer small enough, cheap enough, and quiet enough to be classified as an "inkjet-killer" finally hit the market last year, it came from Samsung, a company that had name recognition, but absolutely no inkjet assets whatsoever. -
What sort of updates were made between Logic 7.0.x --- 7.3.x ?
Hi I was pretty much new to Logic with version 8. I am guessing that before Logic 9 we can expect Logic 8.1 and I was wondering what sort of changes are made for these new sub-updates such as from 7.2 to 7.3 and what sort of things might be changed for 8.1 if there is such a version? I guess the amount of update will be greater than 8.0.0 to 8.0.2
Cheers
SamFrom memory, it went:
7.0.0
7.0.1 (minor bugfixes)
7.1 (some additional features that should have been in 7.0.0 but weren't ready, bugifxes)
7.1.1 (bugfixes)
7.2 (first universal binary version, Apogee support, more small features & enhancements, bugfixes)
7.2.1 (bugfixes)
7.2.2 (bugfixes)
7.2.3 (bugfixes)
Something like that anyway.
7.1, and 7.2 were both paid updates.
Doesn't mean it will be this way for LP8, and until recently I would have guessed that we'd get a 8.1 version at least - probably coinciding with the Snow Leopard release, and taking advantage of those features. However, this might be enough of a major feature update that it won't happen until Logic 9.
But it's all speculation, no ones knows apart from those guys in Hamburg and some other Apple people... -
When I merge one project with another, Aperture 3 randomly scrambles the photos of the project being merged, instead of keeping them in the chronological order that I shot them in. What can I do to correct this?
The photos have just been dumped into a new home and need to be told how to be arranged. Go to the top left of the browser view for the merged project and select the desired sort order from the drop-down and they'll all sort according to that setting.

What sort of floppy drive should I get?
Following advice on another group, I purchased an Imation USB floppy drive. I never could get it to work on my G4, even after upgrading with additional ports and memory. The G4 barely recognizes a Memory card reader, but after several tries that at least turns on and works. The floppy drive, the light won't even light up. I think any more devices I may get need to have their own power source because they seem to be maxing out the Mac.
What I need to do is transfer old data on floppy disks which was made on a Mac enhanced. What sort of drive is recommended for this? Thanks.Macs are Anemic for USB power, get an AC Powered USB Hub to cure the problem...

Some "movies' are actually Flash files.
This means the Flash App will play them (possibly in a browser in some cases).

A web page can include javascript.
Apple uses javascript here to help with creating the posting box, the Edit options, Adding pics/smilies and the like.
Sometimes the javascript can be what is called a runaway process and gets sort of stuck in an endless loop.
If it is a free standing item then it might be triggered by AppleScript on the Mac. (or be modified in some way)
Again if the Script (normally written with a upper case S) is not perfect it can cause problems.

The system has built-in malware protection that Apple updates as required as long as you keep you system properly updated.
There is no spyware protection. Only you can prevent spyware.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
The facts are:
1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
protection against malware.
5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware. -
Hi. I am a uk iPhone 5 user and will be travelling to Spain next week. Last time I went to Spain in September I could not receive calls on my phone despite having Vodafone euro traveller. I am asking what I can do to rectify this before I travel as it was really difficult to sort out once I was abroad. Please help as I'm not the best with technology. Thanks
Hi,
Is your phone locked to a carrier? If so, you will need to contact the carrier to find out what international SIM cards (if any) you can use when travelling.

Is there a way of connecting the ipad to the smart board in the classroom, so that the smartboard is the control, and the ipad is displaying what is on the smartboard? This is to help a visually impaired child see what is on the smartboard.
Absolutely!
Install Splashtop2 on the PC and enable it to be controlled or ran from iPad or Reflection to simply allow iPad to serve as PC unwired monitor. With Splashtop and an Apple TV connected, you use the smartboard as usual, yet the PC and iPad can see the same content. The impaired child can even interact with the Smart Board via the iPad as if he were writing directly on the big screen. Erasing functions can be done by touching the Smart Board manual controls. Several variables are in play that cause this lack of functionality:
Apple won't permit PC software that infringes its proprietary apps.
Smart Board companies refuse to develop iPad apps because they feel threatened and are being replaced by iPads
School districts think Apple TV is meant for copyright infringement and could expose them to safe harbor lawsuits
Network administrators make it impossible to login Apple TVs because they don't want the streaming occurring
Classrooms are not able to keep up with the technology of using the iPad
Clicker companies refuse to play with iPad because they see it as a potential threat to their core business clients
Apple is not working as hard as it could to exploit its capabilities in education, thus losing money in iPad sales
The bottom line is that we educators and technology developers are hurting our childern with petty conflicts.
