Get a Xi-Fi Extreme Music or just a cheaper soundcard will do since the decoding will be done by the decoder. Can anyone advise on this? Bear in mind the DDTS-100 will only decode Dolby and DTS (and their varieties). That is, it will happily decode the surround from a dvd (assuming your soundcard and software passes it over the digital) but it will only get stereo when gaming or using CMSS for music.
So, the DDTS-100 is a great partner to a standalone dvd player, games console, and whatever else you have hooked up to the tv. It will also play nice when watching dvds on the pc. It has a good upmixer for music and stereo tv too. If thats roughly what you had planned then it will fit that role nicely. Its also more convenient than switching manually over to the pc (with the switcher box) when you want to use it instead of the decoder.
If you were planning to do everything on the pc then it may be a bit pointless as your soundcard and software could do it all instead. Also, i suspect the quality will be better from a decent X-Fi than the DDTS-100 but havent got around to doing a comparison yet.

What sound cards work?

I have been trying to get multimedia working on my arch machine; I finally gave up on the on-board sound and bought a SoundBlaster, which I read worked in other machines. Unfortunately, I got the SoundBlaster Live 24 bit, which, while supported under ALSA (theoretically), sounds like garbage.
I've done a fair amount of Googling, but people seem reluctant to say that any particular card works well. Since there's a lot of "it depends on what you are using it for", I'm wondering if any sound cards actually work well under Linux.
If you play DVDs or other movies on your Arch machine;
1. What sound card are you using;
2. What applications do you use it with;
3. Are you generally satisfied with the sound;
4. What aren't you satisfied with?
I'm hoping for better info before I part with more $$$. Thanks in advance.

Well, I only get surround sound with Xine--all other applications (including totem, which should use the xine-libs) stick with two-channel sound. In Xine, it's as easy as selecting 4.1 from the speakers dropdown; don't forget to un-mute PCM1 and the surround channels in alsamixer, and that's that. I didn't change anything in the alsa scripts or alsa module for the kernel.
Mind, this only works for Dolby Digital 5.1 DVD. Dolby Surround will stick to two channels as Xine doesn't come with a Dolby Surround decoder for copyright reasons (at least it seems so).

Why are you looking for this info? There are not drivers for the Mac and if you plan to use Bootcamp, it comes with all the drivers needed.
The sound definition is very good, think of all the people who use Mac's in the music world with GarageBand or Logicpro etc...

Yes, DDL works with EAX. That's probably you're best solution. You could either get a Titanium or Prelude, which both come with DDL.
Alternati'vely OEM Xtreme Music and Xtreme Gamer (SB077x series) cards often have optical ports. You could get one of these and add the DDL Pack from Creative (about $5 American). That can work out cheaper than a Titanium or Prelude.
Creative sell a flexijack adaptor giving optical out ports. That will work with most X-Fi models.
If you play a lot of games I would skip the Audigy series and the X-fi Xtreme Audio.

Just go to the retail site, put items in your cart, go to checkout. If a card invitation pops up, click on it and be sure to use the same address that's on your credit report. The application only asks for the last 4 of your SS. Since I recently moved, I entered my old address and immediately after approval called customer service to update my address and find out the credit limit. Each account has a $250 limit. I think this is a good way to avoid secured cards or worse yet, cards like 1st Premier and Credit One with outrageous rates. My cards will arrive any day now! With proper usage of these accounts and my student loans reporting good payment history, I expect to receive unsecured offers in a few months.

Hello guys I would like your advice, I received a pre approved offer letter from Bank of America, for the Americard something interesting on this offer is that it has 21 billing cycles at 0% APR for Balance Transfers, after that 12.99% APR, I also have a pre approved offer letter from Citibank, for the simplicity card, 21 months at 0% APR for balance transfers, 17.99% after. What Credit Card do you think I should pull the trigger ? At first glance the APR says everything and BofA would be the best, but I would like to get some extra info from you guys. I am a Citibank customer, I have my checking and savings account with them as well as a couple of CC, in contrast I would be a new BofA customer. I currently have a Chillblast Fusion Sidewinder Desktop PC (http://www.chillblast.com/product.php?productid=8737)?fitted with a Creative X-Fi Extreme Audio?Card. I use my PC mainly for gaming and for music recording/production. The gaming side of things are fine though I have experienced lag on occasion when i really shouldn't have. The main problem is with recording audio. The mic is either too quiet to hear and if I do tweak all the settings, modes, launchers etc (i've trawled through them all!) i just get tons of static which isnt conduci've to a good recording.
So I want to get a decent new sound card. I have looked for reviews on the net and they're pretty sparse. If you guys could suggest a?great card?for Games AND Audio Recording that would be great.

Depends on what card you currently own.
If you own an Audigy 2 or 4 I can't honestly say you wont get an improvement equal to the cost of the new cards.
I used to own an X-Fi but it got damaged so I had to plug my old Audigy 2 back in.
I can't really hear the blindest bit of difference. The only feature I miss is the simulated 3D audio for headphones - is that really worth the cost of the whole new card? I don't' think so.
If you're currently stuck with old onboard audio, then buy yourself one of the [url="http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=209&subcategory=669&product=7 79">cheaper X-Fi'[/url]s, you'll love it. If not I'd wait. Also it's worth bearing in mind that in order to hear the difference you'll need speaker capable of producing high quality audio.
A lots changing since Vista regarding 3D sound. A lot of developers are starting to opt for a purely software based audio engines simply beause the vast majority of PC gamers don't know any different and stick with their motherboards on-board audio. So if you're playing a game using a software sound engine, your soundcard (whether it be onboard or not)? doesn't really make a great deal of difference.
Just play GTA IV and you'll see what I mean. It uses a purely software based audio engine and sounds absolutely stunning.
I can honestly I've never heard anything like it and it makes no use of my soundcard other than using it to send the audio to my speakers.
This is taken from the specs of a modern 3D games engine:

Unless Creative does something special, and more importantly useful for developers, I can see their soundcard department going the way of 3DFX.

Maybe we'll see soundcards based around this kind of fully programmable tech, who knows. Maybe Creative's just moving on to other stuff.

Is your built in Realtek 7.1 analog? If so, does it have 3 output jacks for 7.1 or 4.1 If 4, you'll need a cable with 4 1/8th inch plugs on each end, if it's got 3 the included cable will work fine. Either way it shouldn't be a problem, although some onboard sound may not sound as good as a dedicated higher-quality soundcard as high quality speakers tend to bring out both the best and worst in your other sound equipment.

I have been experiencing crashes with my Audigy 2 during gaming as many others have here. Since there is no solution to this (will there ever be?) what card is a comparable replacement to the Audigy 2? I really don't want to use the onboard sound, but I will if I have to. Even worse, I have fairly new creative 6.1 speakers which I probably can't correctly connect to other cards..

Hi, I have bios 1.4 (came on the MB). I have all of the latest drivers for video and sound. I also went to Nvidias site and got the latest drivers for our chipset. The only one I don't use is the nvidia IDE driver since many have problems with it. Thanks for the response.

You could take a look into an appropriate repair guide to see what is shown for your model build identifier version of iMac (intel) with a 24-inch display; there were at least three models with that size display. Not a single one, was of PowerPC architecture.

Changing the video card would not work and in any case I don't think it could be done on the iMac.
You may be able to get FCE to work by reading this article:-

However, even if you get it to work it is likely to be slow and unsatisfactory.
Your best course of action is to wait until the end of March when Apple is introducing a new version of FCE that will run on both the old and the new Macs.

About any current card, with good driver support, should work fine. The amount of VRAM is not that important, but I would go with ~ 1GB. The driver support is the main factor.
I am running PrE 4.0 and PrPro CS 2 Production Studio on my laptop w/ an nVidia GeForce 8800M GTX - 512GB VRAM, with no issues. That card/chip is a bit old now, and obviously the VRAM is less, than I mentioned, but to "future-proof" the computer a bit, the ~ 1GB VRAM would possibly help.

What graphics card should I get?

I have a "late 2004" powermac g5. I've upgraded to Tiger and Ilife 08. IMovie is not running well enough with my current configuration. But that may be a moot point because I just tried out Final Cut Express at the Apple Store and like it far better than Imovie (I even liked IMovie HD better than '08).
I've upgraded to 3GB of ram. My video card is GeForce FX 5200 Ultra with 64MB DDR SDRAM . I've been told by OWC (Other World Computing) that I could get a ATI Radeon 9200 with 128MB and it would fit my machine. Can someone tell me if that will be enough for movie editing with Final Cut on my G5? That is, without jerkiness in the video playback while editing?
I also called ATI and was told that I could use a ATI X800 XT mac edition (256MB), but they no longer sell the card. Will that card work in my machine? If so, can I get that card without spending a fortune (Amazon lists it for almost $500)? And how can I be assured that it will work and do the job?
If it's important, I'm currently using a 15" CRT monitor more than 10 years old. Some day I will replace it, though I don't know with what.

I wonder if that could be true for IMovie, too? If so, it would seem that my problem is not due to the graphics card.
The people at the Apple Store Genius Bar told me that imovie was heavy on the graphics card and thought that final cut would be similar.
