What Soundblaster Card Should I Buy?

$? Hello
I currently have a Chillblast Fusion Sidewinder Desktop PC (http://www.chillblast.com/product.php?productid=8737)?fitted with a Creative X-Fi Extreme Audio?Card. I use my PC mainly for gaming and for music recording/production. The gaming side of things are fine though I have experienced lag on occasion when i really shouldn't have. The main problem is with recording audio. The mic is either too quiet to hear and if I do tweak all the settings, modes, launchers etc (i've trawled through them all!) i just get tons of static which isnt conduci've to a good recording.
So I want to get a decent new sound card. I have looked for reviews on the net and they're pretty sparse. If you guys could suggest a?great card?for Games AND Audio Recording that would be great.
Thank you for your time.

Depends on what card you currently own.
If you own an Audigy 2 or 4 I can't honestly say you wont get an improvement equal to the cost of the new cards.
I used to own an X-Fi but it got damaged so I had to plug my old Audigy 2 back in.
I can't really hear the blindest bit of difference. The only feature I miss is the simulated 3D audio for headphones - is that really worth the cost of the whole new card? I don't' think so.
If you're currently stuck with old onboard audio, then buy yourself one of the s, you'll love it. If not I'd wait. Also it's worth bearing in mind that in order to hear the difference you'll need speaker capable of producing high quality audio.
A lots changing since Vista regarding 3D sound. A lot of developers are starting to opt for a purely software based audio engines simply beause the vast majority of PC gamers don't know any different and stick with their motherboards on-board audio. So if you're playing a game using a software sound engine, your soundcard (whether it be onboard or not)? doesn't really make a great deal of difference.
Just play GTA IV and you'll see what I mean. It uses a purely software based audio engine and sounds absolutely stunning.
I can honestly I've never heard anything like it and it makes no use of my soundcard other than using it to send the audio to my speakers.
This is taken from the specs of a modern 3D games engine:
Sound manager:
? Fully spatialized 3D sound effects.
? Doppler shift and other frequency effects.
? High-precision sound travel delay.
? Atmospheric absorption effects.
? Reverberation with multiple simultaneous environments.
? Directional sounds with cone attenuation.
? Obstruction attenuation applied to direct and reflected paths.
? Frequency-dependent volume settings for all effects.
? Permeation system determines how far sounds travel through interiors.
? Unlimited streaming music channels with seamless looping and concatenation.
This is all done by your CPU, it makes no use of any audio hardware. Fairly ****ing evidence for the death of the dedicated sound card.
Unless Creative does something special, and more importantly useful for developers, I can see their soundcard department going the way of 3DFX.
It's interesting to see that they're buying into companies such a
Maybe we'll see soundcards based around this kind of fully programmable tech, who knows. Maybe Creative's just moving on to other stuff.

• What Windows 8 Should i Buy for Bootcamp?

I do not have a windows OS of any kind installed on my mac. I would like to get windows 8 for my mac from amazon.co.uk .
Windows 8 Pro, Upgrade Edition [Upgrade from Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7] (PC)- this is the main one that pops up but its an upgrade??
When i search windows 8 on amazon.co.uk and on other sites the only products i see are upgrades from older versions, but i dont have any older versions of the Windows OS installed on my computer. So to cut a long story short, what windows 8 should i buy for bootcamp. Please could you provide a link, preferbly amazon or if not a UK website.
Thanks.

Here are a few links I could find that are aparently the full install not an upgrade. I'd check with the seller to be sure though.

• What size iphone should I buy?

What size Iphone should I buy?  I have a relatively small music library.  I anticipate takeing a lot of pictures and videos but assume those would ultimately get stored elsewhere (upload to the cloud)?  I would probably watch movies/videos on my ipad and would not store alot of documents on it?  What am I forgeting?
Thanks

IMO, forget the calcs and buy as much storage as you can afford.  Better to have and not need than need and not have.  Plus it will be worth more when you sell it.
Note that videos are not stored in iCloud and videos taken with the iPhone can be very big, hundreds to thousands of megabytes.

• What firewire cable should I buy?

What firewire cable should I buy to connect my Macbook to my external drive Western Digital My Book Studio 500GB Quad Interface with Firewire 400/800? I am buying several of each for a new film class and I want to be sure to get the right equipment! (I'm confused about amounts of pins)
Thanks for helping a novice!

There are two types of cables - FW800 and FW400. However, your MacBook does not support FW800 so all you need is the standard FW400 cable. It has six (6) pins.

• Which card should I buy if I like customizable EAX/DSP listening effects?

Hello all,
I'll first tell you, what audio system I currently use&know, then what I am looking for... and about the mispurchase I have unfortunately already made.
My current main audio system:
SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium PCI-E on Win7 x64
Samsung HW-C770 (includes 7.1 boxes and an AVR that supports distinct 8-channel connection to the PC)
my EAX/DSP listening profiles created in Creative Console Launcher / Audio Creation Mode (especially making use of custom Reverb and Chorus DSP effects for my/our music&film listening enhancement and pleasure...)
I am looking for:
a small version of the above for another room
must be compatible with my Laptop => USB connection!
(I already have 5.1 boxes with a built-in amplifier for this room)
My mispurchase: I already bought a SoundBlaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro and am very disappointed with it, because:
only the Creative Console Launcher / Entertainment Console is available! (The few predefined EAX environment effects available in the entertainment console are not customizable. Also, they sound pretty bad in my ears compared to my hand-crafted ones...)
the Audio Creation Console is not available (not even the game console), so no customizable effects like Reverb/Chorus/AutoWah at all!
I already found the sad cause for this: this USB card does not have a real X-Fi chip built-in and is pretty much just a software solution (TruStudio...) without user-programmable DSP effects!
Question 1:
Does anyone know of any Creative USB sound card that allows me to create custom EAX/DSP listening profiles (i.e. customizing the Reverb, Chorus, Mixer settings like in audio creation mode...)?
What about the non-pro version of the X-Fi 5.1 Surround, maybe/hopefully, because it is from the pre-TruStudio generation? Can someone with this card please either confirm or deny, before I make my second mispurchase...?
Question 2:
Secondly, I already wonder what Sound Card I should buy, when I'll assemble my new main PC system sometime next year. As explained above, I need 7.1 for my boxes and a programmable DSP for listening pleasure.
I read daniel_k's post about the Recon3D generation cards and was appalled, because he says: "... X-Fi Titanium Features you'll be missing: ... Fully programmable DSP in Audio Creation mode.". So, this is a no-go for me!
What about the new ZxR, maybe? Does its hardware have the X-Fi features back or is it still weaker like the Recon3D?
Thanks for your input!

Many of the good effects and presets from the SoundBlaster Audigy (or even Live!) generation unfortunately did not make it into the X-Fi software generation, but you are lucky: the customizable Jazz Club preset did. To find it, enter audio creation mode and click on the "..."-button of the Reverb effect. Then open the drop-down box and choose "Jazz club". Click on the advanced button to see (and optionally change) all of its effect details (this screenshot is for the Royal Hall effect, but the Jazz Club is at the same place...)
It is not so easy with the X-Fi software to stack two EAX/DSP effects, but this is necessary for great-sounding custom audio profiles. However, it is possible to get back about 80% of the features you once had with the older Audigy software generation via a method that I have detailed in another thread.
So you see: even during the Audigy=>X-Fi transition there has already been some feature loss. Then the effect features were lost altogether on hardware level(!) in the transition from X-Fi=>Recon3D as Daniel K. pointed out. My hope was that Creative brings them back in the Z series, but I fear this company has shredded yet another one of its once great features/assets...
This is really a pity, because with proper marketing and just a few more software development days (like for an export&import option for sharing custom audio presets with friends) these features and listening effects could have made a big selling point in the entertainment market... Therefore I am also honestly worried about Creative's future as they continue to make severe marketing beginner's mistakes and don't use/advertise their strengths!
I also had the idea of looking for a good EAX-based audio player when I changed to the X-Fi generation, but found nothing that came remotely close to the EAX/DSP effects one could/can configure with the SB Audigy or X-Fi (with the help of my workaround). If someone knows of a good EAX software playback solution, please let us know as it might be the only viable way after the X-Fi generation to get these features back!
>>"You may have to do the same as what im going to do for my Z until Creative bring it back with a upgrade for us unhappy customers who thrive on this feature."
I have already waited years for them to bring back these basic Audigy features into the X-Fi software generation. I have long since lost this hope...
Thanks for the link to the X-Fi HD USB card, but it is not useful for my scenario as I have 5.1 speakers. Additionally, it is also based on this TruStudio software, i.e. I assume that it is not software-capable of configuring EAX/DSP listening profiles either. (Can someone confirm?)
>>"but i cant believe the X-Fi version doesn't even have the X-Fi Core it has to have a cut down version at least."
I have this info from a German forum, where they basically say that the 5.1 surround USB card does not have a real X-Fi chip, because it is built like the X-Fi Xtreme Audio (which doesn't have one either). I think this is plausible. In the same thread it is also confimed (by a cited eMail answer from Creative support) that the 5.1 surround only offers the entertainment mode (and thus loses out on all the entertainment/listening effects that you can only configure with "audio creation mode", which should simply be named "expert mode" in my opinion).

• What Credit Cards Should I Apply For?

Hi there, My Ch7 was discharged 4/15/15. I have applied for a First Premier Card (approved at $700) & Target (declined) and that is it. What cards should I apply for? Trying to rebuild and not sure how to go about it. Any advice is very much appreciated. All accounts are showing as closed on credit reports except for student loans.  Transunion is 558/ Equifax is 575

Hello, My BK7 was discharged in late March. I just applied for Express and New York & Co store cards using this link http://www.doctorofcredit.com/shopping-cart-trick-get-credit-cards-without-the-hard-pull/ This link contains a list of retail cards you can get with a SOFT PULL!! Just go to the retail site, put items in your cart, go to checkout.  If a card invitation pops up, click on it and be sure to use the same address that's on your credit report. The application only asks for the last 4 of your SS.  Since I recently moved, I entered my old address and immediately after approval called customer service to update my address and find out the credit limit.  Each account has a $250 limit. I think this  is a good way to avoid secured cards or worse yet, cards like 1st Premier and Credit One with outrageous rates.  My cards will arrive any day now! With proper usage of these accounts and my student loans reporting good payment history, I expect to receive unsecured offers in a few months.

• What fan part should I buy - HP desktop

I have an HP Pavilion elite e9220y home premium.

I think my fan is going; what part should I buy? does it have to be an HP part?
I posted a similar question yesterday, but the answer was regarding a hard drive! so I'm trying again....thanks so much....
This question was solved.

Before you try to replace the CPU fan, you really need to determine the source. You can turn off the computer. Then you can open the case, and lay the cabinet on its side. That will give you an open area to look down into.
1) Visually inspect. Clean any dust globs on the blades. Using a can of compress air (never shake the can), blow away the dust bunnies.
2) You said you'd go to a shop to replace the fan if needed.
3) The CPU fan has to be measured. You'd have to shop the size and RPM/PWM specs. I have no source for a given CPU fan number.

• What Backup drive should I buy

I am looking to purchase a backup drive. The size 2GB, I am considering the Apple wireless drive but should I look at any other manufacturer?
I am also going to use this drive initially to restore the erased data from my second internal drive. This also leads me to ask what recovery software should I consider.
I would appreciate any feedback.

Many people on these forums use OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series. IMHO that is all that I will buy, high quality and reasonable price. You can find them by clicking
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
As for what software, you should buy 2 of these drives. The first drive should use Apple's Time Machine, it's already built into OS X. The reason for a second drive is when it comes to backing up redundancy is very smart because backups can fail too. For drive two use a cloning app such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

• What Credit Card should I Apply for? BofA or Citi

Hello guys I would like your advice, I received a pre approved offer letter from Bank of America, for the Americard something interesting on this offer is that it has 21 billing cycles at 0% APR for Balance Transfers, after that 12.99% APR, I also have a pre approved offer letter from Citibank, for the simplicity card, 21 months at 0% APR for balance transfers, 17.99% after. What Credit Card do you think I should pull the trigger ? At first glance the APR says everything and BofA would be the best, but I would like to get some extra info from you guys. I am a Citibank customer, I have my checking and savings account with them as well as a couple of CC, in contrast I would be a new BofA customer. What do you think would be the CL if I am approved on BofA and what do you think would be the CL if I am approved on Citibank?

I don't have experience with BT cards but just wanted to share about my personal experience with these two lenders  BofA: started out as a secured card $500 and CLI to $1,500 with HP then opened a BBR $500 auto CLI to $1,000Looking at current BT offers for these cards, there are no BT promos... They are only offering 3% BT fee and then the APR on the account (currently 15.99% for me)I haven't read around the forum about BofA allowing direct deposit into checking account and then paying off other lender's credit balances but I know Citi explicitly states they allow direct deposit (if this is a feature you would like to have) Citi: have the discontinued Dividend card $9,000 CL and double cash card $2,900 (no BT promos showing for DC because I'm still in my 0% period)I have had Dividend for a year and looking at current BT offers, there are two: one 3% BT fee and 4.99% until 7/2017 and another for 3% BT fee and 2.99% until 8/2017. Personally, I think Citi has better long-term BT offers. You mentioned you have CCs from Citi? Have you checked your current cards for BT offers?
In terms of limits, everyone is different but I think Citi gives higher limits without HPs for CLIs Great, thanks for sharing your experience, I had a look at my current BT offers in citibank and they are not that good the best deal is 18 months and 2.99% APR during that period of time.  I have the thank you CC 20k CL this one is my first and oldest CC, I applied for the diamond cc about 8 months ago I got only 7.6K CL so that's my fear with citi and get a little CL than the diamond, as for BofA I got no idea of the minimu I could expect, I have read the minimum is $500 which for me knowing that is not attractive to apply for it

• What type of wireless card should I buy?

Does anyone have suggestions on what type of wlan card I should buy for my MSI K8T Neo FSR Board? I currently have a D-Link DWL-G520, and it crashes the system, so I need something new. Thanks!

I always seem to have problems with internal PCI cards from D-Link Netgear Linksys (the list goes on), but I have never ran into a problem with external cards. I currently use a linksys and my friend uses a D-Link. One benefit of going external is, obviously you can move it from computer to computer without a problem, also if you are getting a bad signal you can move it to a different spot. I have always felt that having a card in the back of your computer with all the electrical interference caused by the computer is something I don't want to deal with.
Good Luck
Jeremy
It depends...
USB adapters can sometimes freeze up. I've had this problem with a Belkin 802.11b, and Motorola 802.11g adapters. I still think they are great because you can move the adapter around, and far from the PC, but PCI cards would be the most stable.
I think the ideal situation is a a/b/g PCMCIA card with a desktop pci adapter, so you can remove it for use with a laptop too. Also get a decent external antenna, and you'll want for nothing.
At least until 802.11n comes along....

• What kind of card should I buy-- or do I really need to spend $300?

Hi everyone--
I'm hoping for some suggestions. I have a 23" Apple Cinema Display HD -- I think it's the ADC connector (no power brick which is nice). I'm tired of the stock 9600 card and need a graphics boost. My needs are probably pretty limited. Here are the things I'd like to do:
Run quicktime movies (or more specifically movies from iTunes) full screen at 720p or better (currently only the 480 will work without frame rate problems)
Stream video from sites like abc news or ign.com (I have to reduce a browser window to the smallest possible size to keep the frame rates up).
I was looking at the x800 but maybe it's too much processor for me? I won't be doing much from a Photoshop/Aperture/RAW image processing.
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: Power Mac G5
Model Identifier: PowerMac7,2
Processor Name: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 2
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 6 GB
Bus Speed: 1 GHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.1.5f0
Thanks in advance!

I upgraded my 128MB ATI 9600 for a 256MB NVIDEA 6800 GT DDL and you can see the difference.
Full HD divx plays flawlessly, that said the ATI was just the same, the biggest thing for me is i can play Halo with my lad and though the graphics on his ATI 512MB P4 are in a different league, i can now see the details that the 9600 was missing.
On a plus for me there is no need to use a molex splitter (which you may need for a pc flashed card, nothing wrong with that) as the NVIDEA takes the extra power it needs from the ADC mini port on the logic board yet it has 2 DVI's.
It cost me £100 for the 6800 GT but i sold the ATI for £70 so all in all a relatively cheap upgrade.

I just bought an imac core duo and I cannot open final cut express. I get an error message stating that I need an AGP graphics card. What kind works well and can I install it in an imac?

Changing the video card would not work and in any case I don't think it could be done on the iMac.
You may be able to get FCE to work by reading this article:-
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=335392&tstart=0
However, even if you get it to work it is likely to be slow and unsatisfactory.
Your best course of action is to wait until the end of March when Apple is introducing a new version of FCE that will run on both the old and the new Macs.
You will be able to upgrade (if you have FCE HD) or buy new.

• Leopard won't work for me: what Tiger package should I buy?

I was holding out for a Leopard upgrade but my imac g-4 is too old to run with the new cat. Now I see that Apple is withdrawing Tiger and I'm going to have to buy the software elsewhere. Can you please advise me on which package to buy? All pages with Tiger system requirements now link to Leopard pre-sale pages.
My imac is running on 10.2.8 and has 256 MB of memory.
I have a non-Mac memory card that I can install but also need to know if this is advisable.
Thanks in advance for your guidance.
kever

You need to buy a retail Tiger package. The install DVD will be black coloured with a big X on it. Don't buy any grey coloured Tiger install discs. These would have shipped with a new Mac and would likely not work on your Mac. Also don't buy any black Tiger DVD that says "Upgrade" on it. These discs require that you have OS X 10.3 installed on your Mac to work.
If your iMac does not have a DVD drive, you will either need to get an external FireWire DVD drive (not USB) to install it, or you will need to get the Tiger CD set. This used to be available at AppleRescue, which seems to have gone under now. Check eBay for it.
You should still be able to get Tiger at any computer retailer that sells Macs. If you wait until after October 26th you should be able to find Tiger for a substantial discount buy buying it second hand at places like eBay.
