What specific type of portable hard drive do I need to purchase for my iMac 10.5.8?

I have an older iMac 10.5.8 and want to purchase a portable hard drive. I know I need a specific one for such an older computer.
Can you tell me what to ask for when I purchase one?

Generally, any USB or FireWire drive will work, but you should avoid USB drives if your computer's ports are only USB 1.1.

What is the best portable hard drive for my mac?

A lot depends on the size you want...physical size, I mean...see what they have at OWC, http://www.macsales.com I have thee of there drives and they are great...compatible and already formatted out-of-the-box.  But it is still better to format and partition yourself to set them up your way.

    There is no best.
Look at OWC for some options.  http://www.macsales.com/
I am biased against the ubiquitous  low price Western Digital.
I had good luck with DiskGo Edge in the past.

What's the best portable hard drive t use for both windows and Mac?
My first iMac arrives tomorrow and want to back everything up from my wife's work laptop as well as my own notebook and transfer to the iMac.
    Thanks.

It's all down to personal experience.   I read up extensively recently and ended up totally confused by the conflicting reports.   I actually bought a WD elements and it works fine.
Don't forget to format it Mac Extended (journaled) and make sure you have sufficient capacity for your needs ... Double the computer HD, or more.

  • I have moved all of my music from my laptop to a portable hard drive...need help :( cant play music

    Hi all,
I moved all my music from my laptop to a portable hard drive, my hope was that i could just plug and play into my mabook air not the case...
I was wondering if anyone could help with the following, in a perfect world i would love to be able to keep the music on my drive (there is about 500 gb worth) and then when i want to play through mac to apple tv be able to just plug into mac and then be good to go, or if poss for itunes to be able to recognise the music on my portable drive...and for me then to play through itunes without adding it (as there wouldnt be enough space)...and to also have the capability to plug the drive into my windows comp and be able to also still play from there.
I dont know if any of this is poss...it all seems really complicated to me...and i am new to mac.
If anyone thinks they could help please get in touch!
my main goal is to be able to play my music through apple tv to the surround system in the house, and to be able to play music through my mac if poss, doesnt have to be itunes so long as i can air play or even better select through apple tv.
thanks so much in advance to anyone who can help me out
p.s. i tried this...didnt work, unless i am doing it wrong

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
Windows users see tip at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18879381
If you put it in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)
Do not confuse (as you did) moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

  • What type of internal Hard Drive do I need for 2015 Macbook Pro 13"

I want to replace the 256 GB hard drive that came with my 2015 MBP w/ Retina with something much larger like a 1 TB hard drive. Is there a specific type of hard drive I need?
Solid State Hard drives seem to be a ton of money for a 1 TB Drive. is there anything in the 100-300$ range that will have more gigs of space and be an improvement to the hard drive currently in the 2015 Macbook Pro w/ Retina?
Would something like this be an option?

I really don't know anything about this stuff so any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Update your records.  None of the retina MBPs have soldered in SSDs.  One fastener holds them in place.

  • What type of internal hard drive do I need?

Hello, someone just gave me their old iMac G5 with isight. I am completely new to the mac world, but this computer seems pretty cool. So I want to use it, but it only has 250 gb on the hard drive (I need more space than that, otherwise I'd just leave it alone). It's the 20" 2GHz version, with 2 gb of ram, and that's all I really know since it's used and I dont have all the information for it :/ I'm not too tech savvy, so obviously I'd have to bring it in to be installed, but I would like to buy the hard drive online if possible, since I'm guessing it'll probably be cheaper. Can anyone give me some information on what I need to buy (I want something with 500 gb or more). I've googled it, but I'm not sure what the results mean to be honest. I'm afraid I'll get the wrong thing, so I don't want to waste my money. Thanks in advance!

You need a 3.5" SATA drive, and any good one will do, but the iSight is not easy to take apart, These are some sites that might help:

  • What is the best external hard drive (USB 2.0) to get for my Mac?

Here is a question from your "average user"
I'm looking for an external hard drive for my iMac (Mac OS X 10.7.2 - only 4 GB). I was looking at 1Tb. We have a new baby so I'd like to protect my pictures, video, and scrapbooking files in addition to using it for back up.
    * Does "backing up" mean I have exact copies on both drives? (silly question I'm sure)
    * Would storing my photos/videos on an ehd help my computer run faster?
*Should I just store my video on DVD's? Does that make more sense?
Now I need help on what to look for:
*Any suggestions on size for an "average user"? Should I consider 2Tb for down the road?
*Any suggestions on brands? or websites to look at?

Firstly, congratulations on the new baby!
For ease I am going to pretend that your questions were numbered!
    1. Yes, you will have two identical copies, one on your hard drive and one on your external. Of course, you should really back up your entire hard drive.
    2. No, see above!
    3. You can do, but Lion does not include iDVD so you will have to buy iLife 11 while it is still available. Consider a 2TB external drive (the cost difference is small) and keep them there as well.
    4. Yes - see above!
    5. Look here (if you are the US):  http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MAU4S7W20T64/
Highly recommended by experienced users here, and I am about to get one, despite the additional $40 in postage!
Feel free to post back with any additional questions!

  • Replaced Hard Drive - Do I need to purchase software again?

My Macbook hard drive failed, and it was not recoverable.  We replaced a hard drive.  Do I need to purchase softwares (Kenotes) again?  I purchased this software about 6 months ago from the online apple store.  I still do have an Apple ID.  My OS is Lion.

If you purchased Keynote from the Mac app store, no, you do not need to purchase it again. Go to the app store, click on the Purchases tab and look for Keynote and click the Install button to the right.
If you purchased Keynote as part of the iWork suite on a disk, you should still have that disk and you can reinstall it using that. If you do not have the disk you will need to purchase again.

  • Problems Downloading iTunes Library From Portable Hard Drive

Why does it take so long to transfer iTunes songs from a portable hard drive?
    Here are my stats:
    Machine Name: iMac
    Machine Model: PowerMac4,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 800 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.4.1f1
I'm downloading a 9,000 song library from the portable hard drive to an empty iTunes program. I highlighted all of the song files (Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, etc.) It took at least an hour for all of the songs to "process". Then my computer told me there is not enough room to store them all. I understand this because the list of songs I want to import is 34 gig. What I don't understand is why it has taken since midnight last night (it is now 14 1/2 hours later) and song no.6,450 of 6,800 is loading. Does it normally take this long for such a large amount of songs to transfer. Will there be any way that I can transfer the other 2,200 songs after this is done?
I also want to know if anyone knows if it makes sense for me partition the iTunes library somehow so it won't slow the computer down by being such a large file.
    iMAC 1500   Mac OS X (10.4.10)
    iMAC 1500   Mac OS X (10.4)
    iMAC 1500   Mac OS X (10.4)
    iMAC 1500   Mac OS X (10.4)

I would think you could access them directly from that drive, but I am not sure if the USB 1.1 bus speed will cause problems or not like stuttering, long pauses, aborts in the middle of songs, etc. You can certain give it a try and let us know if it works ok that way.
Also keep in mind that USB is a shared bus so it may work if the USB bus is doing nothing more than accessing the drive and your keyboard and mouse. If you start scanning in something from a USB scanner, printing to a USB printer, accessing a USB to Wifi device, etc. then you might see more issues with playback as iTunes has to share the USB connection with other things.

  • Does anyone know how to format a Toshiba 1.5 TB canvio portable hard drive for macOS10

    Hi
I have just bought a Toshiba 1.5TB Canvio portable hard drive. It needs sto be formatted for Mac (OS10.5).  I was told to go to disk utility, format using FAT32.
In disk utility - erase there is an option MS_DOS(FAT).  Is this what I use?

  • How do I delete files from a portable hard drive

I've been backing up my MacBook Pro on an external portable hard drive. I need to delete some but not all the files from that portable hard drive permanently. When I highlight them and click to move them to Trash I get a message telling me this cannot be done because they are Read Only files? How do I go about it. I am required by work to delete them off this hard drive. Do I have to reformat the hard drive? If so how do I go about it?

You can easily delete files from a Time Machine Backup:
Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock.If the Time Machine icon isn’t in the Dock, look for Time Machine in the Applications folder.
Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through the backups Time Machine created. The windows behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to delete, select it, and then open the Action menu (looks like a gear) and choose Delete All Backups for the item.

  • Loading iTunes on portable hard drive

Hi, I've run into a problem that I can't seem to find an answer myself. I have a MacBook and have had my iTunes loaded on a Toshiba 250 GB portable hard drive. Everything was working fine when I wanted to play my iTunes I needed to have the portable hard drive connected to my MacBook. For some reason I had opened up iTunes without the portable hard drive and some how lost the connection setting that would have my MacBook look for the Toshiba portable hard drive and run iTunes from there. My question is...How do I set it up again so that my MacBook will run iTunes from the Toshiba portable hard drive? Is there anyone that can shed some light on how to solve my problem? Thanks in advance!

    Hi.
You need to go to iTunes preferences, choose Advanced, then change it there.

  • How big a hard drive do I need for iMac and Time Machine?

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere already. I am going to buy an iMac, probably the new 24" with a 320G internal HDD. I already have one Lacie external 320G HDD so I was wondering whether I can use this for Time Machine backups, or do I need to buy a bigger one? If so, how big? Is there a rule of thumb for working out how much hard drive space you need to have for Time Machine, for instance if I were to buy the 500G iMac what would I need?
    thanks.

I agree with the "double the size" rule of thumb. You should also consider how much of the 320GB you are actually using and are likely to use in the next year or two. After all, it's the amount of storage you use that matters, not the size of the disk. Disks will very likely be cheaper soon. You should also keep in mind that TM deletes old archive data when it runs out of disk space. So as long as you have more disk space than you have data to back up, TM will work, though you will lose older versions of your data.
So if your 320GB drive only has 100GB used and you're not the kind of person who eats up disk like there's no tomorrow, the 320GB drive should be fine for now. If you expect that 320GB disk to be full soon then a 750GB TM disk is more like what you need.
The same logic applies to a 500GB iMac. If you only expect to use 250GB in the next year or two then a 500GB TM disk should be OK. A 1TB drive will be a lot cheaper next year or the year after.
