What STP protocol to use?

I have recently taken over the management of a small LAN made up of 13 switches 10 Cisco and 2 Nortel switches.
The network is made up of a stack of 3750E-48 Port switches (x4), 3560E-48 Port (x2), 2960G-48 (x3), 3550E-48 (x1)and 2912XL-12 (x1).I also have a IBM blade chassis with a Nortel Layer 2/3 switch installed.
I have been looking at the Layer 2 config and most of it has been out the box installation the root bridge was the old 2912XL-12!! this has since been changed.
The Nortel switches do support RSTP and PVSTP... im just unsure which one to use? I am also unsure about where to deploy additional functionality such as BACKBONEFAST and UPLINKFAST.
The core of the network is the stack (3750 x 4) at the access layer I have trunks configured on the 2960's and 3560e (2Gbps) to the stack (core) and from the Nortel I also have trunks. Attached to the core are most of my servers, attached to the nortel are the blade servers and attached to most of the 2960Gs and 3560's are PC/Hosts.
Given the above which I know is vague what would people recommend I deploy in the environment with regards to the protocol and the use of UPLINKFAST and BACKBONEFAST, etc?

Let me simplyfy your answers:-
PVSTP - natively out of the box required UplinkFast & BackboneFast to be specifically configured where required.
BackboneFast and UplinkFast are a cisco propriatery - in 802.1D
RSTP - ALL the above are enabled by default, as they are built in to the RSTP process, and RSTP is backward compatible with 802.1d. RSTP is an EEE standard.
To meet your requirements - RSTP is the solution.

The hard disk changes with each generation of drive.. the original series were 7200rpm drives.. but as green drives became more readily avaialble and cheaper.. especially cheaper.. Apple moved to them.. The Latest TC uses WD green drives exclusively now..
Standard ordinary green WD are 5400rpm but maybe variable.
It is a slowish drive although probably just as fast as the original 500GB Seagate.
Now the important point.. there is no speed advantage in using a faster drive.. these boxes are processor-controller bound.
You can replace the slow green drive with an SSD and there is no improvement in speed.

The SSD was marginally faster at writing.. the green drive did faster reads..

They use JRMP (Java Remote Messaging Protocol) in "normal" RMI. However, they can now use RMI-IIOP (or RMI over IIOP, IIOP being Internet Inter-Orb Protocol) which allows RMI-implemented Objects to talk to CORBA objects I believe. You can generate Stubs/Skels with this protocol using the -iiop argument to the rmic command.

Say, does anyone know what bluetooth protocol apple is using for their bluetooth keyboards for the iPhone and iPod Touch? It is probably HID, but the people at RIM (i.e. BlackBerry) use SPP. So I would think many 3rd party keyboards use SPP (Serial Port Protocol). But, then, there are many posts about "I wish Apple would support SPP" because people want to build apps that interface with external HW that only supports SPP.
What I want to do? (you ask)
I've one of these nice / expensive Think-out-side portable folding keyboards (good). That only has a serial interface (bad). There are many bluetooth "dongles" out there with serial ports (good). But they only support SPP or Serial Port Protocol (bad? maybe? depends).
See, I know RIM (BlackBerry) people support SPP on their devices. But I haven't heard (found) word one about what the iPod Touch supports. I would hate to spend $80 on one of these dongles and find out it doesn't work.
So, what does the iPod Touch use when talking to the bluetooth keyboard?

What Thunderbolt ports to use?

I know there is some protocol on what Thunderbolt ports to use on the new Mac Pro. I have 2 external TB drives, 1 TB display, and I feed an AJA T-Tap with another TB cable. The other day I changed some cables around and when I went to start the Mac Pro it just gave me chimes and would not boot. I moved some TB cables and all is fine. What is the proper method?

Protocol for using FCP on client's computer?

I'm about to do a job out of country. I can't haul my edit suite through numerous security checks etc. etc. The client has a decent Apple setup, but no Final Cut Studio.
Is there any protocol for using MY FCP Studio on someone else's computer for a limited amount of time? And what might that be?

It will work, but the EULA clearly indicates that the computer that FCS2 is installed on MUST be owned by the licensee.

Which protocol to use when using Airport Express as a travel router?

I plan to use my new Airport Express mainly as a travel router. When I create a network, should I configure it to use PPPoE or DHCP? Basically, when I get to hotel I'm going to hook it up to the modem...so whichever protocol hotels use is what I want to configure it for. When I configure it on my home network, where I have SBC, I have to use PPPoE; DHCP won't work. But I think hotels have DHCP servers...anyone? thanks!

PPPoE is a protocol that allows you to log into ADSL service, most hotels have DHCP servers that will assign you an IP address, so you would select DHCP.

What JVM is being used in my Internet Explorer ?

I have a web-bases/java-bases application that does not work when JRE 1.4 is active.
I disable it for Internet Explorer in the Java Plug-In Console on the Browser tab and then things work fine.
How do I know what JVM is being used then ?

WinME, IE 6.0, JRE 1.4

When you install JRE1.4.0, it asks if you want to link the JRE to IE and Netscape 6...if you answered yes, what it does is to create and automatically select a new option box in IE (see Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced-->Java Sun-->Use JRE1.4.0...) -- if you elected not to link the JRE, the option box is not created.
Without the new option box, IE works like this:
1) Unless the applet has been converted with the HTMLConverter that comes with your SDK, IE will run the applet with its native JVM which is version 1.1.5.
2) If the HTML file has been converted, IE will check to see what version of the JRE is required and what is already on the system. If a different JRE is required, it will prompt the user to download the required JRE and then run the applet -- if the user doesn't want to do the download, the applet will simply fail to start.

I feel I must move beyond iMovie, what program should I use ?

I have been happily using iMovie and iDVD from versions 1 through 6. iMovie 08 was so bad that Apple made iMovie 06 available as a free download for buyers of iMovie 08. The newer iMovies were better, but they seemed “dumbed down” (even for me). Now, I am shocked and horrified to learn that the latest iMovie does not even set chapter markers!
So, I have continued to use iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (they seem to work fine under OS 10.9.4).   iMovie 06 is now 8 years old! I feel compelled to move forward. A lot of my work is DV.    In the past, most of my source material came out of S-Video.   I used a Canopus ADVC300 analog-to-digital converter that gave good results.   Going forward, I will have more video utilizing Component Video, or HDMI.
I am looking into 2 possibilities, Adobe Premiere elements 12, or.........Final Cut Pro X.
The final result of my work is almost always a DVD.   It is hard for me to move from iMovie and iDVD. I never read the manuals for either program, yet, I was able to produce DVDs with nice menus and overall quality close to Hollywood.
It looks like Final Cut Pro X 'can' make a DVD directly without other software. However, from what I have seen on YouTube the result is primitive compared to what iDVD was doing 10 years ago.
Adobe Premiere elements 12 can make nice DVDs and Blu-ray's directly. I have no problem with using a separate program to make DVDs but I haven't got a clue how to do that with Final Cut Pro X.   I suppose I can still use iDVD, but now I'm back to using discontinued software.
I do not need any of the high-powered affects capability that Final Cut Pro X possesses. My “movie-making” is mostly confined to simple editing (the old iMovie 06 did all I needed).
Frankly, one motivation for choosing Final Cut Pro X, is the excellent, compassionate and understanding support that the kind people on this very forum provide. So, what program should I use?

Why do you want to switch to a new editor anyhow?
• iM-a never did discs - that was iDVDs job = no big change in your workflow
• iDVD is still working, and aside obsolete, complex and $$$$ DVDSP (part of obsolete FC/p) or Encore (part of Adobes CC rent package) your only option left to create disks on MacOS is indeed iDVD (...ok, there's Toast and Burn and some weird 'shareware'-stuff...)..
• iMovie-b supports the new HDef formats (AVCHD) - you mentioned converters and DVDs = no HDef in use, in your habitat, correct?
• if you don't need FCPX' bling-bling (I can't imagine that ) - why not using FCPX-lite = iMovie? 15$ ...
• chapters could be done in iDVD - just to mention that ............
• AP and FCPX are following very different concepts in usage - my personal preference is 200% on FCPX, … I was one of the loudest nay-sayers, when iM08 araised, meanwhile, FCPX is my dream!! AP (tested it) is way too complex, crowded, 'optionalized' and did I mention 'complex' for me. A bit like Windows vs. MacOS: 'everything goes' (incl. getting lost) vs. 'convenience' (incl. restrictions) ... After 2y of practice, I'm editing my weekly hobby-projects with 6-cam-Multicam, incl. tons of custom graphics, slow-mow, effects (soccer games) in less than 2h ... awesome!

My Time Capsule won't allow my computer to back up. It says it is already in use but that is what it is being used for. It has been working fine for years. All of a sudden I keep getting a message that TC (time capsule) cannot complete back up as it is already in use. I am doing the backups automatically through Time Capsule.

Restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting and reconnecting the power adapter. When it's back online, open the AirPort Utility application and check to see whether there's a firmware update for it.

How can I find what apple ID I used to register my iMac when I first booted up? I am being told that by using this ID I will be able to go on to the App store and down load iPhoto at no cost. Is this true? My iMac does not have iPhoto resident on it now

Launch Keychain Access and click on Login in the left hand pane and then on Passwords. Next do search for Apple in the search field at the top and click on Apple ID Authenicication in the list that comes up. That will give you the ID no. and password.
