What system is better: pages or swift publisher?

Can someone pelase tell which of the two is better? I am a univeristy student and am just looking for something quick and easy to use to help me complete my assignment.

Depends. Swift Publisher is not a word processor it's a page layout application sort of like InDesign, but not quite as "swift." Sorry, couldn't pass up on the pun.
For the university there is only one thing you should get and that's Microsoft Office 2001 for OS X. They should have it available at your school at low academic pricing.
There is not a university in the country that uses iWork apps. Projects requiring Excel can't be done in Pages nor does Keynote hold a candle to PowerPoint. If you want to play with the big boys, then get what the big boys get. I should know. I was in higher education for 30 years. I not only played a doctor on TV, I was a doctor.

  • Photoshop on Windows or Mac? What system is better?

    Hi I'm thinking on buying new laptop mostly to create stuff in Photoshop, sometimes After Effects videos and to update my community blog [link removed by moderator]
    My friend is saying that I should buy Mac Book because it will work better and faster etc. even with 8GB of RAM. Is it true? Windows Laptops with 16GB of RAM are much more cheaper than Apple... What will be better for me? Thanks in advance.

    Which Platform is better may change over time.  When Photoshop first started you did not have a choice.  Thomas developed Display for the Mac and demonstrated it to Adobe and Photoshop history began.   That was back around 1990 it was Mac Only I think Adobe began to market a Windows version in 1992.  At the time both platforms were nowhere near as robust as they are today. Mac OS 7 and 9 where  poor and buggy and windows was full of bugs.   Mac were using the Power PC processor and PC lintel 8088 family.   Intel the came out with 386 that gave PC mainframe features and Windoes NT and Windows 2000 were developed  PC were becoming of age.  Steve Jobs returned to Apple and IBM would not produce a power efficient PowerPC for Steve's desired laptop  had also use Unix for his Nextstep adventure and knew its virtues. So in a single step he abandoned Apples's OS and the PowerPC. processor.  So now Apple Mac and IBM compatible PC are using the same hardware Processors.  Both platforms have a robust OS these days both are  preemptive multitasking systems.  Mac OS base design is Unix like.  Unix was developed by AT&T Lucent lab in the 1960 time-frame for the PDP 11. Design to be modular and portable where code would be easy to developed using  simple module using pipe-ing data just flows input to output.  Apple is more controlling then Microsoft IMO neither are open system but Apple seems more closed then Microsoft to me.   This has advantages and disadvantages.  Application operation constrain to work the way Apple dictates users get a more consistent environment but less software and Hardware less upgradable.  Photoshop on both platform run into problem easily seen just read through this forum.  I use windows for I had to at work and a gained a lot of knowledge about windows over the years. I'm not about to change.  I also had to use Apple OS 7 and 9 for a little while.  If you going to use computers you will have to learn quite a bit about the OS installed on it.  All computers need to be maintained and backed up.  If you only going to use one application you may be able to get a turn key system.    Find the best products for the jobs you need to do.   You may find you need more then one machine and OS.

    It is a Mac port of a newer version of FF thatn any PowerPC Mac can support natively. It runs, looks and feel like FF.

  • Pages v. Publisher?

    I have used Publisher a lot for different church newsletters and things but it doesn't work on my macbook.
    Is pages a viable alternative or am I going to be disappointed?
    thanks

    You should have an iWork demo on your machine so you can try it out. iWork contains Pages and Keynote, both excellent apps. If you don't have the demo take a walk through the tutorial which will show you some of the great features in quicktime movie format:
    What's New in Pages 2?
    Don't expect Pages to be a Publisher clone. In my opinion it is a much better, more intuitive app. For the basic user you can crank through docs easily and for the advanced user there are a lot of hidden powers in the Inspector. Despite being a whiz at Pagemaker I keep finding myself working on Pages instead for all my layout needs. Keynote, an incredible presentation app is also included in the iWork, making this, IMO, an incredible bargain.
    Missing in Pages: a build booklet plugin. Fortunately, a third party developer has created CocoaBooklet, an app which can turn Pages docs into booklet pdf's, with all pages in correct order for a booklet. These booklets are not editable but easy enough to create that you make your edits in Pages and build a new booklet in very little time.
    My favorite Pages feature: Little blue lines appear when objects (including text blocks) are aligned with each other or in the center of the page. This makes placement of objects as easy as it gets and avoids the time spent in Publisher aligning an object. The lines appear when any edge of an object is aligned with another one or the page margins. They also appear when the object is perfectly centered. This feature is a work of genius.

  • What is the better way to change name of a site with paths and links?

    Hi!
    i m using dreamweaver cs4 and i have a site already configured on dreamweaver
    i need to change the name of the site and at the same time, every path names and every links
    This site has about 50 pages so i would like to know what is the better steps to do for modified the name of the site unless problem?
    I read the informations about  'manage site' but its not clear for me about links and path names!!
    thank you

    Just use site manager to change the site name. Nothing complicated with that.
    What exactly do you mean by changing path names? Do you want to change the name of folders in the site? If so, just change them within DW and it will prompt if you want to update links.

  • I have a long article I copied from Safari. I want to paste it in pages and save as document. Every time I try to do that, only what fits on one page of Pages appears. How do I copy the whole document? It would fit in five or six Pages pages.

    How do I copy a long page from Safari as a document in Pages? When I try to do it, I'm only able to get what fits in one Pages page. It would fit in ten or so.

    I'll guess that you've used a page layout document & pasting created a text box. You can add more pages & create linked text boxes, but I think you'd be better of using a word processing document. In word processing documents there is a basic text layer & additional pages will be created as needed to fit the text. Take a look at the toolbar of your document. If it says "sections" for the +page icon it's a word processing document, if it says "pages" it's a page layout document.

  • What Systems are the Pros Using for Premier, After Effects, and SpeedGrade?

    I bought the full Creative Cloud in hopes of making a career for myself in audio/visual editing. The problem is, my system doesn't seem to be able to handle the software, particularly when changing back and forth between the three programs mentioned above. Beyond that, my first project failed to export properly. Moreover, all throughout its development the system lagged badly. And this is after having followed all the preferences recommendations available in the Adobe's tutorials and elsewhere on the Web.
    Here's my system:
    SYX-P67A-C43: Intel Core i7 2600 (an 8-core unit) at 3.4GHz, with 8 Gigs of RAM (soon to be 16) with a GTX 550 NVidia Card, 1Gig of RAM.
    As you can see, this is far in excess of what Adobe claims to be the minimum system requirements. It's obviously NOT.
    What systems are the Pros using (like the guys in the tutorials) for Premier, After Effects, and SpeedGrade? Give me the exact machines with all the specs so I can price one up.

    ...although a little " old" now.....the fundamentals of your machine are still OK to get started IF you : 1. INCREASE your system memory to the full 32 GB....should make a BIG difference in performance.....8 GB is NOT enough, it will HINDER performance. 2. OVERCLOCK your CPU !!!.....many owners of your CPU have been safely running at 4.5 Ghz or HIGHER...some at 4.8 Ghz !!! This OC will make a DRAMATIC improvement  as  CPU speed is a huge factor in performance. 3. Improve your video card to a new NVidia 970 with 4 GB of video memory. 4. Check and MAKE SURE the power supply in your machine is ADEQUATE to handle everything, esp. if you overclock the CPU....generally 850 to 1,000 watts of a quality make is good. 5. Use a fast storage system...that means a SATA III SSD as your "C" drive, ( boot drive), being a Crucial M550 series,( or, M600 series), OR, a Samsung 850 Pro series SSD, ( more expensive). Other SSDs are NOT recommended, only these two makes are recommended for technical reasons. On this "C" drive, you should have Operating system, Programs, and Windows page file ONLY !! Your "D" drive can be ANOTHER single SSD to be used as a "cache drive" for all the previews, media cache, and cache files that Premier Pro creates PLUS, it can ALSO serve as the "Global Performance cache" used in After Effects. All your media and project files can go on your "E" drive. HERE you would have LIMITED OPTIONS because your motherboard only has TWO SATA III ports, ( which would already be used b the "C" and "D" SSDs). You NOW have only 4 SATA II ports left ......you COULD RAID 0 four 1 TB HDDs off these ports and have a 4TB backup drive connected to one of your TWO USB 3 external ports.....any DVD or Blue-ray can ALSO go on an external port.
    However, if you are into spending REAL MONEY !!!.....Go Haswell E and X99 all the way !!...THAT will give you great performance !!

  • 'My Application Page' is not allowed here because it does not extend class 'System.Web.UI.Page'

    I have a custom SharePoint 2010 solution that includes an aspx page. The aspx page in is in the /layouts folder within the solution and I created it by just adding an application page to the solution. I am trying to create a parent-child relationship between
    two different lists in SharePoint. From the parent I have a custom button on the ribbon that creates a child item with the ID of the parent stamped on it.
    The page is just a processing page that forwards on parameters from the parent to the new child item. (i.e. the ID value)
    The code generated when I add the aspx page is below:
    <%@ Assembly Name="$SharePoint.Project.AssemblyFullName$" %>
    <%@ Import Namespace="Microsoft.SharePoint.ApplicationPages" %>
    <%@ Register Tagprefix="SharePoint" Namespace="Microsoft.SharePoint.WebControls" Assembly="Microsoft.SharePoint, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c" %>
    <%@ Register Tagprefix="Utilities" Namespace="Microsoft.SharePoint.Utilities" Assembly="Microsoft.SharePoint, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c" %>
    <%@ Register Tagprefix="asp" Namespace="System.Web.UI" Assembly="System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" %>

    <asp:Content ID="PageTitleInTitleArea" ContentPlaceHolderID="PlaceHolderPageTitleInTitleArea" runat="server" > Processing Page </asp:Content>
    The code behind is as follows:
    using System;
    using Microsoft.SharePoint;
    using Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration;
    using Microsoft.SharePoint.WebControls;
    using Microsoft.SharePoint.Utilities;
    using System.Reflection;

    SPList thisList = oWeb.Lists[new Guid(Request.QueryString["List"])];
    SPListItem thisItem = thisList.GetItemById(int.Parse(Request.QueryString["ID"]));
    sContentType = thisItem["ContentType"].ToString();
    sContentTypeID = thisItem.ContentTypeId.ToString();
    if (sContentType == "Some Content Type")
    sContentTypeID = "";
    sAIID = thisItem["ID"].ToString();
    //Redirect to newform.aspx with the Appropriate parameters.
    Context.Response.Redirect(oWeb.Url + "/Lists/Blist" + "/NewForm.aspx?AIID=" + sAIAuditID.ToString() + "&ContentTypeId=" + sContentTypeID + "&ParentItemID" + Context.Request["ID"]);
    else if (sContentType == "Some Content Type")
    sContentTypeID = "";
    sAIID = thisItem["AIID"].ToString();
    //Redirect to newform.aspx with the Appropriate parameters.
    Context.Response.Redirect(oWeb.Url + "/Lists/AList" + "/NewForm.aspx?AIID=" + sAIID.ToString() + "&ContentTypeId=" + sContentTypeID + "&ParentItemID" + Context.Request["ID"]);
    else if (sContentType == "Some Content Type")
    sContentTypeID = "";
    sAICID = thisItem["AICID"].ToString();
    //Redirect to newform.aspx with the Appropriate parameters.
    Context.Response.Redirect(oWeb.Url + "/Lists/CList" + "/NewForm.aspx?AICID=" + sAICID.ToString() + "&ContentTypeId=" + sContentTypeID + "&ParentItemID" + Context.Request["ID"]);
    else
    LoggingService.LogError("MY.Solution - Processing Page", "No Applicable Content Type Found.");
    catch (Exception ex)
    LoggingService.LogError("My.Solution - Processing Page", ex.Message);
    finally
    //DO SOME FINAL THINGS HERE WHEN REQUIRED.
    In the page I need to use Request.QueryString to get the values from the URL. But when I deploy the solution and load the page I get the error:
    'MY.Solution.Layouts.MY.Solution.processingpage' is not allowed here because it does not extend class 'System.Web.UI.Page'.
    When I change the line:
    <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="processingpage.aspx.cs" Inherits="MY.Solution.Layouts.MY.Solution.processingpage" MasterPageFile="~/_layouts/application.master" %>
    to inherit as follows:
    <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="processingpage.aspx.cs" Inherits="Microsoft.SharePoint.WebControls.LayoutsPageBase" MasterPageFile="~/_layouts/application.master" %>
    it does not work either.
    If I change it to inherit like below:
    <%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="processingpage.aspx.cs" Inherits="System.Web.UI.Page" MasterPageFile="~/_layouts/application.master" %>
    it also does not work.
    What does this error actually mean?  And why doesn't the default code generated by Visual Studio work?

    @NadeemYousuf I have tried this too and it didn't work.
    What does the error even mean?  And why does the error appear with default Visual Studio code?  In my example I have just added a basic application page with no other code in it and it still does not work.

  • What system utilities do you recommend?

    Hi,
    I am a new switcher to Mac.
    Can you please recommend what system utilities I should purchase and which brand I should purchase.
    The ones I want are :
    1) I need an anti-virus program (I know there are no real problems on the Mac with virus's, but it is better to be safe than sorry!)
    2) A firewall. (Is the one that comes with Mac OS X good enough or should I use a commerical one?
    3) A Backup program
    4) A Disk utility program
    5) A general system utility program for system maintenance
    I would be really grateful if you experienced Mac users could give me advice on this matter.
    Thank you for your help. I look forward to your responses.

    Hi, Lucky Luxy.
    Here are my recommendations, in order corresponding to your list:
    1. re: Anti-virus: See my "Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware" FAQ for my recommendations as well as a list of some recent Mac OS X security threats that have emerged, including Trojans, rootkits, and spyware. The FAQ also addresses some of the usual arguments against installing an anti-virus solution on a Mac that often arise in discussions of this topic.
    While some believe that anti-virus solutions are not required on a Mac, I feel that's ignoring the fact that threats are emerging and that security exposures continue to be found, albeit eventually closed, in Mac OS X, as in any other operating system. Even Apple now recommends that one should "check for viruses."
    2. The firewall included with Mac OS X is "industrial strength." No need for a third-party firewall product.
    3. A comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution is essential. Computing without a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution is like driving without auto insurance. If you don't have a Backup and Recovery solution that you're using regularly, you're essentially accepting the risk that at some point all of your data may be lost. For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
    4. re: Disk Utility. I recommend having both Alsoft DiskWarrior 4.x+ (DW4) and Micromat TechTool Pro version 4.x+ (TTP4).
    While both can build a new, optimized directory for a disk, I have found there are some disks that only DW4 can repair. DW4 is a "specialist" in disk directories.
    Likewise, TTP4 brings a host of useful hardware testing routines that are neither in DW4 nor the Apple Hardware Test. TTP4 also includes an excellent disk defragmenter. Defragmenting is generally not required under Mac OS X 10.3 or later unless you perform an extensive amount of video editing or your disk is nearing full, in which case it may be useful. See Mac OS X: About Disk Optimization. TTP4's Surface Scan is also useful in determining if a disk has developed bad sectors.
    If one owns neither utility today, the initial investment may seem like a good deal of money, but compared to your data and your time, the cost of these utilities is insignificant in the the long run. I've found their upgrades to be reasonably priced for what they do.
    Neither utility is a substitute for a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution. But I've seen DW4 save more than one person's bacon and the suite of hardware tests and additional functions TTP4 bring to the table make both a worthwhile investment.
    If one could only purchase one now, I'd recommend they purchase DW4, then later add TTP4 when funds permit.
    Better to have the tools and not need them, than to need them and not have them.
    A good mechanic has more than one kind of wrench in their toolbox.
    5. re: General Maintenance: See my "Maintaining Mac OS X" FAQ. It covers my advice on "regular maintenance" and dispels some common "maintenance myths."
    Finally, since you are new to Mac OS X, you may benefit from some of the educational resources I recommend in my "Learning About Mac OS X" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • What system requirement do i need to get os x lion?

    what system requirement do i need to get os x lion? i got mac os x 10.4.11 right now

    Well the primary reason is because it's what Apple recommends. When users vary from the manufacturers solutions is when they have problems. Apple makes it very clear what the system requirments are when they publish:
    General requirements
    Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
    Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • One page won't publish

    I have been using IWeb for awhile and am very comfortable with the program. Lately, a few problems have emerged. Most irritating is that one of my pages will not publish to my website on .MAC. I've tried remaking the page, refreshing and re-publishing...nothing works.
    Secondly, after I publish the IWeb continues working saying that it "is continuing to upload in the background" and then little circle graphs slowly fill-up...but some of them NEVER finish. Then, it says it is still uploading when I go to quit IWeb...even though it is clearly not working.
    Lastly, several of my pages come up red when I open IWeb everytime, even though I haven't changed them.
    PLEASE HELP. Thanks.

    It probably is a server issue but try this:
    go to the System/MobileMe preference pane and log out of MMe.
    login with a bogus username and password like "Ying" and "Yang". This clears the caches.
    login with your correct username and password.
    delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home()/Library/Preferences folder.
    go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.

    HI Sally ...
    First, Apple's policy states that, "all sales are final" > iTUNES STORE - MAC APP STORE -TERMS AND CONDITIONS
    As for a recommendation for creating address labels, try posting in the appropriate Mac OS X community.

    What's wrong with it?
    As one thing after more-than a month later on 22 March, Pages _refuses_ to alter the color of text.  How maddening this is:  I select text, I select a crayon, but the text _remains_ black.  < Pages is Incorrigible! :-( >

    you can compare the features of both models here:

    here is what I think matters:
    8530 is better because:
    CDMA device including 3G
    trackpad instead of trackball
    got media keys on the top
    rubber all around
    better hearing aid support
    8900 is better because:
    GSM/GPRS/EDGE device (works everywhere in the world)
    form factor is more elegant
    camera is 3.2MPix instead of 2MPix
    more Bluetooth profiles accepted
    screen definition is 480x360 instead of tiny 320x240
