What target settings for LCD monitor calibration?

I have recently installed Spectraview II to calibrate my NEC LCD 2180WG monitor but have some doubts on which target settings to use as there are different opinions on color temp, gamma and intensity choices.
I use my system purely for photo post-processing and printing on color calibrated printers. I use AdobeRGB color space and have no interest for processing images for web.
- What color temp do you use/recommend? D50, D65 or something in between? I see that some folks use D65 and others swear by D50.
- What about Gamma choice 1.8, 2.2 or L* ? Same here, no common choice here too.
- Lastly what about intensity (brightness in terms of cd/mm2)?
NEC recommends Target Settings for Printing, which are D50, 1.8 gamma and Max. Intensity, but I'm not sure.
I'd appreciate if you could recommend correct settings for my type of work.

I arrived at 5100K by measuring a few of my favorite printing papers with my spectrophotometer. This was a good compromise (most measured between about 4800K and 5300K). I confirmed the results by trying various calibrations them comparing the monitor to prints (using custom printer profiles). Anywhere near 5000K looked great, but 5100K was the best match of the bunch. I used 5000K lighting for viewing (Solux and Philips light sources).
Luminance settings were done in a similar fashion. First I compared a ppure white Photoshop document (on the monitor) to the intensity of a sheet of white printing paper displayed under my viewing light. With the monitor luminance set to the 85 cd/m2 range, the two documents look about the same brightness of white. I try to view my prints under "moderate" light levels rahter than ultra bright levels, since I know they won't be lit by spot or flood lights when placed on a wall. If you do have spots on your hung prints, there is a case to use a higher luminance level on your monitor. Anyway, on many LCDs, if you set the luminance too high, your blacks can start to look a little washed out. When set to about 85 cd, my tonal range in the print is a great match to my monitor. If I have the monitor luminance set to 100 or higher, I find that my prints look dark and muddy in comparison (unless viewed under unrealistically bright lights). So, a lot of trial and error, plus some initial brightness comparisons.
Gamma is a tougher one. I have a special viewing target that I bring up in Photoshop (Lab based to prevent any possible conversions). When viewed in Photoshop at full magnification, it helps me to set the gamma, which affects mostly the midtone density. On my LCD, I found )again by trial and error) that 2.0 gave me the best tonal distribution. My old CRT worked best at 1.8 gamma, and other LCDs sometimes work best at other gamma settings, such as 2.2.
The above settings work beautifully given my equipment, my viewing levels, ambient working conditions, etc. My monitor to print match is excellent from both a color and tonal range standpoint. Hope that helps clarify my thinking and approach.

LCD Monitor Calibration

There is an vast amount of information on this topic, that topic being LCD monitor calibration. Some LCD have presets, theatre, games, etc. I want to calibrate my LCD so that if someone else is viewing my work on their monitor and they complain it is too light or to dark, I can say it is your monitor. One of my LCD has two presets that are of interest 'standard' & 'sRGB' my other LCD doesn't have any presets. What is the best or near best calibration I can manually set both monitors too, if this is even possible on LCD, I hope it is, atleast I hope they have matured from the past.

I get into trouble with everyone when I suggest using a gamma calibration target and using on-monitor and video card controls to get the monitor calibration close to 2.2 gamma, so I probably shouldn't do it. But hey, it's not absolutely necessary to spend money to get closer to your goal. It really boils down to how good is good enough for you. Better color accuracy than what you have now could be a stepping stone.
One approach - and I'm not saying it's the best one, but it'll get you closer to your goal without spending money - is to set your monitor to the sRGB preset, set your monitor profile to sRGB IEC61966-2.1 in Windows, then adjust the video driver controls so that the gradients in this target, when displayed at 100% zoom, appear like neutral gray gradients.

I wish I could say it's simple to get it to look like this, but unfortunately it's not. However, if you have the ability to set gamma, contrast, brightness for each of the three color channels in your video drivers (ATI Catalyst drivers offer this ability), then with a little elbow grease it is possible.

Apply Settings for EWA Monitoring missing

Hi all,
we are adding a SAP HANA Technical System on Solution Manager, but we found problems on EWA:
We followed the note http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1542651 for using Early Watch Alerts on HANA Standalone (without Netweaver ABAP) and then followed the note http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1747682 for add an HANA Technical System on Solution Manager.
The fact is that in step 6 of "Managed System Setup" we don't found "Apply Settings for EWA Monitoring":
In attached image you can see only 4 activities instead of five: the follow image is taken from another Solution Manager (SPS10, but SPS7 works the same)
We have SAP HANA 1.0.69 and Solution Manager SPS8.
Why "Apply Settings for EWA Monitoring" is missing? How can i apply this settings?

After 19 hours of this problem, it is now resolved on the management portal. There was no mention of it being a problem on the Azure Status page.

Windows XP Driver For LCD Monitors

Hi!
This topic may be out of place so apologies in advance but i was wondering if Toshiba have created any Windows XP Display drivers for LCD Monitors?
I have a Toshiba 26WL36 LCD monitor capable of producing a resolution of 1280 by 768. However, the quality of the picture decreases as the resolution is increased.
Any help would be appreciated.

If some driver were created it would be probably delivered with the LCD Monitor. The quality and screen resolution depends on graphic card.
Sorry but it is not known to me that any LCD display need a driver.

"Could not retrieve the settings for endpoint monitoring."

So my VMs are hosed because suddenly Azure cannot retrieve the settings for endpoint monitoring. If I try to start the VMs, it fails for this reason. If I try to configure the VMs, it fails for this reason. When I look at ENDPOINT MONITORING
under CONFIGURE it constantly says "Loading..." This all began when today I tried to switch a VM from STANDARD to BASIC configuration. Now I can't start any VM.

Once I powered off the VM there was no starting it again, even after switching back to STANDARD config. Same "Could not retrieve the settings for endpoint monitoring" error every time. I gave up, duplicated the disk, and created a
new VM from scratch, which has no issue with endpoint monitoring. Ridiculous that I had to do that. Azure continues to be as brittle and unreliable as a drunk monkey.

Best rgb and gamma settings for external monitor with mountain lion

I'm using an LG LED 22 inch monitor with my MBP mid 2010 via minidisplay to hdmi. on OS X side the settings have been default. On the LED side the settings , if set to preset RGB it tends to fade the whites a lot. when i set to user definied and let the preset rgb be at it is, the colors are quote decent. currently they are on R 50, G 58 and B 59 and Gamma 1. Which is the best RGB and Gamma value for OS X Mountain Lion?

Welcome to the forum.
First off, you need to go and buy a hardware monitor calibrator, such as an OptixXR or similar. This will build a custom monitor profile for your specific screen. Without this starting point you can forget ANY attempt at accurate colour matching.
Never (and I mean never) use a working space such as sRGB or Adobe98 as your monitor profile, that's not what they are designed for. Working spaces control what colours are possible in the image, monitor profiles control how those colours are shown on screen. Aperture uses it's own working space so you don't have to worry about that too much.
To answer the rest far too briefly, I'd suggest setting the proofing profile to sRGB and of course use sRGB for the export preset. The gamma setting you will have to adjust depending on how dark the Lightjet prints look compared to your screen. You will have to do test-strips to start with.
Your images looking crap on flickr on Windows machines is partly because Windows web browsers generally do NO colour correction, and only partly to do with the different gamma.

LCD Monitor Calibration and FCS2

What preset are people using to calibrate FCS2 and their LCD monitor (I'm not talking about the external TV monitor). I've read a suggestion that "NTSC 1953" was the preset to use with FCS2, but it looks too dark on my monitor.

I use the pathetic Colorsync utility to calibrate my Dell and Viewsonic monitors and then save profiles. Unless you're doing print work in Illustrator or Photoshop or perhaps web-destined work in FCP, calibrating your monitor for video work is completely irrelevant and useless. For video work, it's essential you use an NTSC/ATSC device and not your computer monitor.

A tiny bit OT: Recommendations for Dual Monitor Calibration?

I've owned my little Huey Pro since it was a mere Huey jnr. (You had to give Pantone money and they magiced into a Pro) It’s given decent service for the price (not very much) but has never been particularly flash calibrating a second monitor. Today I upgraded my 19 inch 4:3 Philips with a 24inch 1920x1200 LG, and while the Huey still does a decent job with my 30inch Dell main screen, the is LG miles out!
It turns out to be a known problem, and mine is now too bad to live with. So what do y’all use that can handle multiple screens, and wouldn’t need me to take out a mortgage to buy?

All good stuff 21, but when it has finished doing all that foreign language stuff, will it calibrate my computer screens?

The i1 is being sold for NZ$500 here, and since Christmas I have put >NZ$1600 into sorting my computer out, and I'd prefer to delay this a month or so. Fortunately I have no video projects on the go, so the second monitor is not colour critical right now.
What about the Color Munki Smile? Keith Cooper over on Northlight was more or less positive about it, and he is someone I trust.

I don't do a lot of printing, and when I do I use Canon's Easy Photo Print Pro, because it always gets it right without and hassle. Perhaps I'll go ask on the PremPro Hardware forum, and on DVInfo, because video is probably the most colour critical use of that second screen.

Is there an optimal luminance value for LCD monitors

Hi you all,
I use Lacie 319 high end monitor as my primary monitor and "generic" Fujitsu as my secondary monitor (for PS tools etc.) I have calibrated the monitors with Spyder Elite 3, which also measures the ambient temperature of the room. Based on that measurement it suggests 140 cd for the white point (brightness) to calibrate the screen for. If you do this the prints printed with Epson 4900 (as well as with my previous Epson 4800) print far too dark. The colours are rendered for the printer with Image Print RIP (Colorbyte software). When I calibrate my monitor down to 80 cd the prints are quite OK although still a tiny bit too dark. My question is should I do the LR of PS optimisation of my pictures in the 140 cd monitor brightness and then reduce monitor brightness mechanically to the cd value which gives optimal brightness of the print (some 70 cd?) . Of course I have to adjust the brightness of the picture to be printed viasoft proofing. If continue doing as I do now making all my picture adjustments using a very low monitor brightness (ideal for the printed result) am I working in a less than optimal area for the monitor to deal with colors. Also do many of the folks in the internet see my pictures too light because they are using much brighter monitors than what I used to adjust the pictures.
Having asked the question I do know that many things affect on how you see or perceive the colors as well as the brightness of the print. So the answer is not that it depends on where you look your prints. I know the measured ambient light of my "lab" (was a photographer already in the time of film) suggests that I should use 140 cd as the brightness value of my monitor. Doing so produces prints far too dark when looked at the same ambient light. Using 80 (or 70 to be exact) cd monitor brightness gives good print results when the prints are looked in the same (as above) ambient light. My question is am I no adjusting my pictures too light for those using the "default" monitor brightness and is the color management of LCD monitors up to standard if you dial them as down as was customary for the big old CRTs.

General rule of thumb is:
80 - 90 cd/m2 for print
130 - 140 cd/m2 for screen
What I do:
Edit everything (print and screen) on a 80cd/m2 monitor. It works out very well.

Windows 8.1 forgets dpi / display size settings for one monitor on almost every reboot

I use TV 32" with 1920x1080 and cintiq 13" with 1920x1080
when I boot my PC the resolution is fine but DPI is wrong.
In smaller monitor It's look like DPI is higher than the bigger one.
I already set dpi to be the same (smallest 100%) but it's not work until I do something to change display setting.
It's really annoy me. This problem is not happen when I use windows 8
Only solution I found is turn off
"Turn on fast start-up".
When I do that It's boot like what I want. every monitor is the same DPI.
But it'll make my boot time longer.
It should be just start up windows and use the same dpi from the start.
So I think this problem is a bug in windows 8.1

I've already used the latest graphic card driver. But It's won't help this issue.
In registry editor. I check those variables then value of them is already set like that blog suggest.
So , it look like when windows start-up(with fast start-up) It use something like
suggest value for different monitor size instead of what I set in control panel. But when I turn off fast start-up windows use my setting value.
And I think there are a lot of people who got the same problem as me.

LCD Monitor Calibration Needed

I just purchased a 3rd party 19" LCD monitor, and noticed the the thing is freaking bright!
I need to calibrate this thing before it melts my eyes. I'm looking for either a tutorial on how to properly do this, or a program that will help me with this.

if you've got the money for something worthwhile, the sypder2pro is an excellent monitor calibration tool. it calibrates crt's, lcd's and projectors. it actually allows me to use my 23" cinema display by removing most of the "pink" that the screen evolved to right after it went off of warranty, making it the most overpriced lemon i ever bought ($1799 before taxes).

Multiple Settings for One Monitor

I have my monitor set to the way I like it, it shows colors accurately and not overly bright (white doesn't blind me). However I edit photos for the web in PS and this is great for my screen but I have noticed when looking at other screens my photos will at times looked washed out and not a good presentation. If I manually change my monitor settings to be brighter (and a few other tweaks) I can replicate the look of other monitors close enough to help prevent washed out/blown out photos. Here is the issue, I need to be able to change settings between the two fairly easily. To manually set my monitor for one then back to the other can be time consuming and a pain to set right every time.
I would like to be able to preset certain settings (in software) that I can quickly switch between by pressing hotkeys or clicking shortcut on my desktop. I have an AMD video card and have attempted to use the AMD VISION Engine Control Center to add presets then tweak the settings for each. However when I switch between the presets the settings are the same.
How do I build presets using the VISION Engine Control Center that actually works (maybe I misunderstand what it is saving?) or is there a way to do this in Windows 7 or free software that actually works decently for this purpose?
Note: I post this here as I assume someone here has done this or seen soemthing like this.

Why not to use a event based monitor to detect the Task Schedule running status? I am not familar with VB script, the suggestion I can give is you need to check if the script cannot properly detect the running result of the task Schedule.

Not a ThinkStation guy, but FWIW, that can happen when installing Win 7 in UEFI mode when CSM support is not enabled in BIOS.
Is CSM support - either explicit or by selecting "other OS" and turning UEFI back on as suggested above - an option?

I have a 1min40 sequence with the Settings: PAL, Frame Size: 1280x720, 25fps, Compressor HDV720p25. What Compressor Settings would you recommend please:
1) to put it in a website
2) for Broadcast: would Apple ProRes HQ be a good choice?

What memory settings for Kingmax 3200 MPXC22D-38 512 Mb on a K8T Neo-FSR board?

Like many people here, I have been having some major stability problems with this board. I am looking to upgrade my old DDR266 memory to a 512 Mb stick on the MSI approved list and decided to go with the Kingmax MPXC22D-38 DDR400 512 Mb stick. I know that is usually necessary to change the memory settings to achieve stability (which is my main goal) and am looking for recommendations for settings. Any help with what each number means (or which setting it applies to) would also be very helpful.
Also, what would be some good settings for my old DDR266 512Mb memory until the new stuff comes? Memtest86+ reports it at CAS of 2.5-3-3-6, and I am looking mainly for stability.

My stability problems seem to mirror most of the posts here, random freezes that are not reproducible and seem to happen un-related times. It is a complete freeze with no sound, only option is to press reset. I can almost guarantee a freeze when playing a 3d game after about 10-20 minutes.
Would the "Fail safe" settings be the most stable? I saw your post said "for maximum troubles" but thought you meant this would reduce them.
