sorry haven't been on this for a while...... shouvld've updated my profile.
as for 'what other what' .......... the mbp has 2 memory banks for the ram right??? i use istat pro & it tells me that 1 ram in 1 memory bank is running hotter than the other ram in the other memory bank.... they lie on top of each other......

  • I have a 6800 ultra in my powermac, what temp should it be?

I have a 6800 ultra in my powermac 2.7, what temp should it be? right now the case is between 111-120 F and the chip is between 150-160F.... is this the temperature that it should be running in? also, is the only difference between the ultra and the GT the 50mhz core clock and the 100mhz memory clock? thanks for the help

    Dear The Geek,
I have the Dual 2.5 G5 with very similar cooling system, etc. I just recently installed a 6800 GT card new from Ebay and it has been running about 111ºF on the Graphics processor case and 144ºF on the Graphics processor chip at idle. As far as I know the difference in clock and memory speed are the only differences between the 6800 GT and Ultra. That said, the difference in processor operating temp could be due to the slightly higher clock speed, I suppose. Running Cinebench I did get the processor temp up to about 147ºF. I don't think the extra 10ºF should be a critical difference. I wonder how your fan speeds compare. For instance, my Graphics processor fan runs static at 32% and the PCI Slot Fan runs static at 49%. How does your PCI fan compare?...I notices mine runs considerable faster with the added current used by the 6800 compared to the original 9600xt.

wow, well, i would think that that would be enough, but you say it overheats if you have the cover on...
    very bad..
a good rule of thumb, in a properly cooled system, the PC temps should FALL with case fully assembled...
for example... in my K7N2DeltaILSR i have 4 fans in the system TOTAL:
1 rear exaust, 1 Volcano 11+ Xaser CPU cooler, 1 red LED fan pointing in, and one more MSI north bridge fan... (passive ATI 9600 cooling may get upgraded for greater OC stabilty)
my temps go up ~8C if i have the side off of it, because the crossflow i have in my case is perfect.
i am going to put 2 more case fans in the front if the case, just to make the hard drives a bit cooler, but the Volcano 11+ is so freeking loud (i have to sleep in this room) that i can't bring my self to do it...
its worth the noise to save 280 gigs of HD... so i will have another 2 fans in the system shortly...

  • What hardware should I run OS X server on now?

    Hi!
I have asked with Apple Store and I get no clear answer on this. I have a few clients that use only Mac clients, and some of them would be suitable candidate to run OS X Server for their file sharing, and group ware needs. One client are around 10 employees running an aging Windows Server that they want to replace. One obvious choice would be some Cloud service, but they want to have a local solution that isn't subscription based. I was going to offer them an OS X Server solution but I'm hesitant to what hardware to run it on! Now that the Mac Mini Server option, which was my obvious choice is gone, what would you recommend to run server on? Maxed out new Mini might do, 1TB drive, 8GB ram and Ci7 dual core with external storage? Or maybe an iMac with Ci7Quad core and 8-16GB RAM? I just think an iMac would look silly as a server, and the now gone mini Server had dual internal drives, perfect for cloning/mirroring...
Mc Pro is too expensive and you get very little storage and very much graphics performance that isn't needed for the money. Sigh. Apple really made this hard to figure out...
    /Hasse

    Hi Hasse,
A macmini should do fine for server purposes. Get one with 16GB memory (upgrading later on isn't an option) and a 256GB SSD. Depending on file sharing you should look into solutions presented by Promise Pegasus or LaCie 5BIG both with thunderbolt 2 connectivity. Connect that to a Gigabit Ethernet and you are good to go! An iMac will do as well, but performance wise there is no need to invest more than just for the screen. Unless you don't want it setup without any keyboard or a screen then a iMac will look lovely
Get another external drive (twice the size of your current data at least) for backups and clone the SSD drive of the macmini on a daily basis towards the thunderbolt storage. And create a backup plan for the thunderbolt storage to another drive. That will work great!
Long story short: mac mini as fast as possible. And go for RAID storage for file sharing, you'll thank me later
    Goodluck

  • What software should i run on my g3 clamshell?

i have recently purchased a new 120 GB HD for my clamshell. before i swap HD's I wanted to make sure that my OS X Panther installation discs work, but sadly they are not. when i put the dis in the installation window pops up and tells me to restart my computer and the installation will begin; nothing happens upon restart. i have contacted the person i bought my laptop through about this but have received no response. i was thinking about purchasing an external hard drive to back up my new HD with my old software. but between purchasing the external HD and the software I will need to clone my existing HD, I figured it was probably easier and roughly the same price to purchase new software. i have done some research and found that the new OS Leopard doesn't run that well on older ibooks. so does anyone have any suggestions on what software I should run on my clamshell? should I just purchase panther or should I go with tiger?

    Hello,
When the computer is restarting, try holding down the "c" after you hear the chime. This will force the computer to boot from the CD. Leopard won't run at all on the older ibook clamshell's. You need a minimum processor speed of 867mhz to officially install it. Tiger requires firewire connectivity to officially install. I'd recommend Panther. Tiger run's alright on the faster clamshells, i wouldn't run it on any of the clamshells within the 300mhz range though.

  • What desktop should I run?

    Hey All!
I am using gnome 2.6, what are some options for another desktop? I have tried KDE, but I never got used to it. I hear good things about enlightenment and windowmaker.
Any advice? What is the fastest desktop?
    Thanks!

Ok, you win I recently tried XFCE again and I do like the fact that the components are totally independent of each other. This is what happened, though:
    1. I didn't install xfce4-session because I don't like session managers (hmm, actually I don't think there's even a package for it)
    2. I disabled the taskbar and enabled iconbox instead (takes up less space)
    3. I found xfdesktop to have no real value over my setbg script, which loads alot faster, so I switched
    4. I liked some of the modules for the panel, but most of them were kicked out right away
    5. The WM is quite good (based on oroborus, isn't it?), but it misses a few features I use in openbox
    6. In the end I went back to Openbox, continuing to use only Lil' Star - Iconbox
If the iconbox was a module for the panel I would probably use that and it would be great. The way it is now the panel gives too little value for me to run side by side with Lil' Star (looks kind of stupid too). Also I wish there was an easy way to reorganize the launchers in the panel. If you have a launcher in a pop-up menu and want to move it out on the panel, you have to delete the one in the menu and recreate it in the panel.

  • At what temp should my exaust fan turn on?

I have had a notebook for a few days and I have not noticed the fan turn on once. The temp is between 115F and 125 F most of the time when idle. I use Core Temp to see these values.
I have another notebook just like it.. same model, and this fan goes on and off on a regular basic. The model is CQ61-411WM.
I cannot find specfications for this fan's operating temp range on the HP website. I would think providing full motherboard and related componentsspecs is something HP would do but it seems they do not.
    Can anyone help?

Thanks.. I will keep an eye on it.
You see why it worried me.. on one unit the fan goes on and off, and on this one it does not. They both operate in the same temp range.. I have never seen either one get above 125 F. It seems the fan on this other one is set to turn on at a lower temp.

  • My new MBP is really messed up and I am wondering what I should do.

(sorry for the mess of a post. I just had the good news of having brain cancer and they put this dressing all over my entire head I can barely see, but I want to post this, so I am going to give it a shot.)
I went to see a genius at the local apple store. After spending 1 hour trying to fix all the software and hardware issues, he went to the back of the store, came back and said we are getting you a new MBP with all the equivalant upgrades you had with the other one (the one that had all the problems). I received the new MBP, the same genius said if I leave my old MBP with him he will transfer all the data over and call me when it is done. I got the new MBP, have had it for about 3 weeks and there are more problems than ever. I have no idea what this would do to a new computer but the genius transfered all my data/files/settings over to my new MBP and he did this before or without fixing all the software problems I was having on the computer he transfered my date from.
Now my software updates... is not working. I read the article, trashed 3 apple.softwareupdates.com preferences wit no help. I find out that he said after I asked about iLife; "yes you will get iLife, all Apple computers come with iLife. There is no iLife 09 just my old iLife 08. When I spotlight iLife 09, no iLife comes up only in emails. It does not even pick up my old 08iLife that is in a folder which was transfered over from my old computer.
The manager at the apple store said to install iLife09 from the gray disk. However, for some reason the new updates my computer needs are not triggering the software updater telling me there are new updates. It looks like the genius did an update before I picked it up and it updated one security issue, but no iTunes 9/1/1 or any other updates I should have received when I look at all the recent MBP update (Apple updates only) list.
When I do go to look at the current updates for this computer it brings me to an Apple website that has all my old updates from the old MBP and in a Finder file it shows all the updates from the old computer and just the one that the genius updated for me.
Does any body have any idea what I should do? It is frustrating. I would like to just start from the beginning with the new computer, wipe everything off and install it all new and get rid of all the stuff from my old MBP that was transfered to my new MBP.
    Thank for any help.

I would wipe the hard drive and start from scratch. The only thing I would save from the old comp are documents, movies and music also make sure you have any passwords or mail that you need to keep. I would avoid Time Machine and just do a normal backup. Boot from the installer and go to disk utilities in the menu and erase the hard drive. When that is done do a custom install and avoid any demos and software you don't use. Install QuickTime 7 from the optional installs.
Then manually download and install the OS updates before installing any third party apps avoiding the combos. Depending on your install OS version you may not need all those below.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1061update.htm l
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1062update.htm l
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1018
When you are done run software update and install the security updates only. When you are done with those you can install whatever application updaters there are and then move on to installing your third party apps.
Hope everything works out for you.

  • What OSX should I use on my 2009 MAC Book Pro? Will Yosemite run

Hi I have a Mac Book Pro from 2009 and I was wondering what OSX should I use on my 2009 MAC Book Pro? Will Yosemite run properly on this computer?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your Mac supports OS X Yosemite. If you need to upgrade your Mac, do it, but if you are happy with the OS X version you are running or you do not like changes (OS X Yosemite has got an interface change), you can keep it always that it is not very old.
In order to upgrade to OS X Yosemite, it is as simple as opening the Mac App Store and downloading OS X Yosemite. When the download finishes, the installer will show up, so follow its steps. Before upgrading, it is important to make a backup of your files with Time Machine -> Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support You can also check that your applications are compatible with Yosemite in this website -> http://www.roaringapps.com
OS X Yosemite should run properly, but I recommend you to run it with at least 4 GB of RAM (you can check how much RAM you have in the Apple menu -> About this Mac). In case Yosemite runs slowly, the backup you made will let you go back to your old version.

  • Late 2011 Mac Book Pro 17"; what is the highest temperature it should be running at?

Using iStat Pro I am seeing temperatures of up to 185º F or so (with the fan running very loudly at 5K RPM). What temperature should I be worried at?
It's currently on a flat surface, actually elevated on two wooden blocks. But still getting high temperatures when streaming silverlight.
    I'm on Lion 10.7.5.

    Hi mende1,
Thanks for the reply. That's disturbing to hear. My computer is nearly ALWAYS at this high temperature (or at least this is the temperature that is reported). For example, I just paused a netflix streaming video to check my mail. The fans are going at 5,500 RPM. And the temperature is listed at 176º F. But now, after only a minute, the CPU is down to 140º F (60º C) and the fans are at 2,000 RPM.
    Is that not normal behavior?
The temperature does not get that high doing any other activities (apart from maybe a flash video game).
    I should probably mention that it's a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM.
Anything I should do to test it? I'm thinking of taking it into the Apple Store for a monitor issue.

  • What make of RAM should be in a MacPro and would they all be the same make in a new computer?

My MacPro is only just over 3 years old and 6 of the 8RAM have stopped functioning.
I put the question - how long should RAM last - and had some replies.
One of the replies led me to wonder what make of RAM should be or should I expect to be in a New MacPro.
Should they all have been the same make when new?
2 of the 6 broken RAM are hynix which I believe are used by Apple.  I don't know what the make of the 2 functioning RAM are?
The other 4 defunk RAM were made in Singapore with a logo - an oval with an M running through it. I can't find any reference to this on the web.
I am in discussion with the supplier of my Mac so any information would be of help.
8Gb of RAM should last longer than 3years.
The other downer/bad luck was that the Apple care package I bought ran out in January just a few months ago although this slowing of my computer started before then but only bad enough last week to have it checked out.
So disappointed with MacPro.  I expected better.
I am having to go back to a PC which the Mac replaced which is still functioning after 7 years so......Mac or PC??????
At this moment in time the PC is proving more reliable and much cheaper!!!!
    Thanks in advance

The cpu heat sinks are not attached to the ram and this is off topic so I am not going to debate it further with you.  If you have a mac pro open it up and look inside for youself.  If you don't stop speculating.
I should add these dimms do have their own heat sinks but they are physically part of each dimm itself.

If you do not know whether your iMac has a PowerPC or Intel processor, do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu. You will get this:
If the line by my second highlight arrow includes the word "PowerPC" as in the image, you can upgrade no higher. If it says, "intel," you can--as Niel indicates--update to at least 10.6.8 and possible higher.
