What to add / switch to make encoding faster?

I'm looking to add or swap something in my system to improve encode time as much as possible. Currently it's taking 2-3 hours to encode 5 minutes of video.
The video is AVCHD encoding to H.264 and it's put through After Effects first with a Keylight effect to remove green screen. Then imported into Premiere and published there.
What's the best hardware improvement I can make to speed up encode time? RAM?
Here's what I have currently:
Gigabyte X58A-UD3R ATX LGA1366 X58 DDR3 4PCI-E SATA3 USB3.0 Sound GLAN CrossFireX SLI Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 TR3X6G1333C7 6GB DDR3 3X2GB DDR3-1333 CL 7-7-7-20 1T Core i7 Memory Kit
Intel Core i7 930 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 2.8GHZ 8MB L3 Cache 130W 45NM Retail Box
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA3 6GB/S 7200RPM 64MB Cache 3.5IN Dual Proc Hard Drive OEM
I also recently removed this SSD drive as it seemed to be causing it to crash.
Corsair Storage Solutions Reactor Series 60GB 2.5IN SATA2 Solid State Disk Flash Drive SSD
Also, had this.
NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800 by PNY 768MB PCI-E16 DVI Dual DisplayPort Workstation Video Card
but just switched to GTX 570  - Was this worth it?
Any advice on what I can add to help pick up encode time and what kind of improvement I can expect would be much appreciated. RAM?
Thank you!

Good thing that you switched out that old, slow Quadro FX 1800 (which IMHO was based on an underclocked GeForce 9600 GT) for the GTX 570. However, you still have two big problems:
1) Not enough disks. You have only one hard disk (from your list; however, you actually have two hard drives, which is the absolute minimum required of Adobe to run Premiere Pro to anyone's satisfaction) - and the SATA interface itself is only half-duplex (meaning that it cannot handle data in both directions simultaneously, but rather it only allows data to travel in one direction at a time). Get at least two more (preferably identical) hard disks for that system.
2) 6GB of RAM is not quite enough for CS5.5. Since RAM is relatively cheap nowadays, go with 24GB of RAM (6 x 4GB sticks). However, in order to use more than 16GB of RAM, you should upgrade to Windows 7 Professional if you are currently running Home Premium.
In addition, I recommend an overclock on that i7-930. But to overclock above 3.4-ish GHz, you should get yourself an aftermarket CPU cooler, such as a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, that's compatible with LGA 1366 CPUs.

Thanks Shootist007, by blockd files I mean files that I have changed to blocked and when I tried to move then for the first time, I had to unblock again. I am trying to backup my pictures, my songs and other files like word documents and excel tables. First I put all of them as blocked, what caused the first problems on trying to move them. Then, I've unchecked the block option and if I try to move one by one, there is no problem. The issue is to move all together, because it gets stuck in the preparing to copy files step. Anyway, if I cannot do all by once, I'll do it one by one, event though that was not suposed to happen if we are talking about technology, right? Anyway, I thank you again for trying to help me!

  • Safari Version 7.0.5 (9537.77.4) very slow and frustrating. What can be done to make it faster?

After the update, it went "south"! Why?! It worked so well before. What is to do about it?

7.0.5 is actually running faster here. Try troubleshooting ..
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If nothing above helped, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • 1ghz emac..... what can I do to make it faster, more responsive

    Hello,
I am back on my emac due to issues I would rather not go into. So my question is.... how can I speed it up a bit? I am plan on bulking up the ram to 1 GB, I have more than half of my internal HD Free,
I am running OSX 10.5.2 which slows things a bit. Anything else I could do? I am thinking about replacing the 40GB internal HD with a 120GB, would that help at all.... I don't know why it would.
Also i have heard speculation that it can handle 2GB ram is this false? Am I wasting processor speed by running 10.5.2? I don't remember it being this slow.
I am open to any and all suggestions.

You could try getting (the latest version of) TechTool Pro 4.
TechTool Pro 4 can be used to 'optimise' your hard disc by defragmenting files, amongst other things. Roughly the equivalent of having everything in your local store rather than having to visit several villages to buy your groceries.
If you have never done this before, the difference should be quite noticeable. It'll take a long time too. My eMac's 37gb HDD took about 14 hours to optimise the first time I did it.
Make sure you install the 1 gig Ram first however. TTP 4 will not run in anything under 512gb RAM. I'm assuming that you are upgrading from 256mb RAM.

  • Mini to Slow - Can I make it Faster?

I'm new to this board and to Toshiba products.   I have a mini laptop NB 205 with windows 7 starter...  does anyone know why its so slow loading and, what I can do to make it faster?  I'm not the best with computers and still learning about them.
    Thanks
    Boni

Streaming without buffering is dependent on your internet connection, not the amount of ram (or video ram) you have. The only thing you can change on your computer itself to help with streaming is to see if there is a lower resolution streaming option (like 480P or 360P instead of 1080P or 720P or SD instead of HD).  Otherwise you'll need to get a faster internet connection.
To adjust the video ram you have to go into the bios. Not sure exactly where it is on your system, but there aren't that many options that you can change in the bios on those things so it should be easy to find.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • HT4946 I am trying to update my Ipad 1 but it is taking hours on the backup - why would this be, how can I make it faster so I can get the latest IOS update?

I am trying to update my Ipad 1 but it is taking hours on the backup, what can I do to make this faster?

I'm thinking that you have a corrupt backup. You can try this if you want to give it a shot.
Without connecting the iPad to the computer, launch iTunes. Go to Edit>Preferences>Devices. See how many backups you have for the iPad. If you have multiple backups, delete all but one. Click on the backup in the window and then click on Delete.
Quit iTunes, connect the iPad and then try again.

  • Script: add to adobe media encoder

    Hello guys!
First of all congrats about the new features, and the badass look of After Effects. I really enjoy it!
But I'm really disappointed to see that the h264 render function is gone. That really destroyed my workflow   boom!
Because I have a lot of jobs for an event hall, where I'm doing very often 360 degrees projection mappings, and the global resolution there is around 26 000 px width. What we usually do, because we're using watchout as playback system and handling all the projectors, is splitting h264 movies to theirs maximum width resolution. The things is that for example for an event we have around 20 - 30 animations, and 1 animation is split in 6 movies.. What we usually did -  we wrote a small script which splits automatically the movie into 6, pre-compose them all, align them all  and renders all the videos with predefined h264 settings. So .... my question now is.. how can I modify my script and set it to send all the pre-composed, resized, aligned, new comps to Adobe Media Encoder and use a predefined h264 render setting? I couldn't find anywhere more info about the scripting bridge between AE and Media Encoder.
    Cheers,
    Marin
PS: I know that we can use Final Cut Pro or Motion to get more resolution from the h264.. but it's kind of workflow that I used to work.. everything happens in one application.. and no annoying hundred times save as, render as etc

    Hi Marin,
It's true that it's a pain to handle the encoding of h.264 outside of AE.  You can write a script that calls the app.executeCommand() function and passes in the code that invokes the "Add to Adobe Media Encoder Queue..." found under AE's Composition menu.  The correct, numerical, code for that command is 3800.  So you would just iterate through the comps you wanted and then open them in the main viewer using the .openInView() method which brings them into focus so-to-speak.  Once it's open you can then send the comp to AME with app.executeCommand(3800).  On the AME side, you would have to make a default template for the render output settings you would want.  When your script adds a comp to the AME queue it will take those settings.
Now, you could do all that, but have you seen AEmpeg that aescripts posted yesterday?  It allows you to render to 100s of codecs using ffmpeg right from AE.  While it costs some money, at least it will open up the door to a streamlined workflow and a variety of codecs that you might need.

  • "Add to Adobe Media Encoder queue" option very slow

    Hello,
The new "add to Adobe Media Encoder queue" directly from After Effects is great, but it is sooooo much slower than encoding directly from Adobe Media Encoder.
My comp is very simple : it's a 90 min. length video that I'm trying to convert from 24 to 25 frames. I need a MPEG2 export for DVD, so I can't use AE because there're no option to export to MPEG2 files in AE.
AME announced 10 hours of encoding, but after 5 hours it was only at a third of completion. So I rendered the movie in DNxHD, then encoded in AME : 1 hour for the DNxHD file, and 4 hours for the MPEG2. Much faster!
I run After Effects CC (12.1.0.168) and AME CC (7.1.0.74) on a windows 7 system with i5 processor and 8go of RAM.
    Anybody else encoutered this issue?

    Tento wrote:
As for the higher encoding time of exporting to AME frome AE, do you have any clue ?
Have you applied any effects to the footage in your After Effects comp? Are you using time remapping or the Time Warp effect? That will slow down the encode significantly. Also, what is the format of your source footage?
Mind that, depending on what you're asking After Effects to render, encoding a comp via AME may not be as fast as using the Render Queue in After Effects. Feeding frames to AME via Dynamic Link incurs some memory overhead and limitations; for example After Effects can not render multiple frames simultaneously on different processors for Dynamic Link encodes.
If I were you, I would try to solve the problems with AME transcoding your footage. You should bring the issue to the AME forum.  If you're fully committed to not using AME, I recommend using Premiere Pro, not After Effects, for this type of job.
Regardless of all the above, I agree with Rick: you shouldn't need to transcode 24fps footage to 25fps for playback from DVD. DVD players will do that frame rate translation for you at playback time. But if your footage is not PAL dimensions (720x576), a DVD player won't necessarily convert the frame size, so transcoding at least the frame size is recommended. Bottom line: I would let your DVD authoring software (Encore?) handle the original file; it should do any conversions necessary when you set the DVD format to PAL.

  • My external HD of 1TB is not being recognized by the iMac and when after a long waiting period it does, the whole computer becomes extremely slow. Do I need any particular add-on to make it workable?

My external HD of 1TB is not being recognized by the iMac and when after a long waiting period it does, the whole computer becomes extremely slow. Do I need any particular add-on to make it workable?
Before I updated to OS X Mavericks I was using another external disk that was getting disconnected ocasionally so I bought a new ADATA HD710 portable 1TB Drive and moved the files to it. This new drive which is supposed to be OS X Mavericks compatible takes minutes to show the files especially when opening second and third level folders which has made mu iMac unusable
    What should I do?

Your Mac should be able to recognize many different types of drives (including Windows-formatted drives) immediately for Reading, provided they are in good working condition and not damaged. There should be no need to transfer to a different type of drive.
If there is no recognition of this drive, see if it can be seen in Disk Utility.
If your aim is to transfer the data on it DO NOT use ERASE or PARTITION as these will completely erase all the information on the Drive.
If the drive is present while the Mac sleeps, it is likely to drop out and not be seen any longer, especially if it is a USB-powered drive.
