What to back up?

I want to jump from tiger to snow leopard. I wanted to just do the upgrade option on top of tiger but people have been saying that I should erase and do a clean install.
I'm in the process of creating some backups now with SuperDuper.
Do I need to backup everything? I only want some of my applications, all of my photos+music etc are all on external drives already.
Do I need to backup /system, /private, /library? Can I just backup /Users?
When I do create the backup, do I create a disk image? Or just transfer to another drive?
How will this work with migration assistant?

That may not be necessary, but the backup issues you mention should be addressed regardless. See my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> for more info.
Do I need to backup everything?
When doing a major upgrade like this, it is generally a good idea to have a complete backup of everything on your boot drive. That way, if there are incompatibilities with old hardware/software, if something goes wrong and the system gets damaged, etc, you have a quick and easy way to restore to the previous state.
I only want some of my applications
Note that you should have copies of installers for all apps that require one. If you are going to go to the trouble of doing a clean install, you should reinstall apps from scratch. If you copy apps over from the old system, it's no longer a completely clean install.
all of my photos+music etc are all on external drives already.
Do you have a backup of all those things? Not that it's particularly relevant to a system upgrade, but you should not fool yourself into thinking that just because they're on an external drive, they're safe. If that drive fails, you need to be prepared or you'll loose all that stuff.
When I do create the backup, do I create a disk image? Or just transfer to another drive?
I would avoid disk images. One teeny bit of corruption and the whole thing becomes unusable. If you're using SuperDuper, just have it copy the files to the backup drive.
How will this work with migration assistant?
If you use something like SuperDuper to create a "clone" of your boot drive (meaning an exact copy on another drive), then I would think Migration Assistant could help import data from there into the new system. After all, there's no difference between that and your boot disk, except for physical location. OTOH, if you tell it to copy everything into a folder on an external drive, it wouldn't look the same as a boot drive and MA might fail. Just be cautious with what you import using MA... again, if you do a clean install and then import all your apps and settings from the old system, you've wasted the time it took to do the clean install. You might as well have just installed over the old system.

iOS backups are not viewable, by design. If you backup using iTunes, to view the contents of your backup requires third-party software. iCloud backups are not viewable at all. This is what gets backed up:

  • What is backed up if you are using iTunes and Windows

I am wondering what is backed up.
Music can restore from iTunes but what about calendar and contacts and photos if they were manually created on the phone. Are they stored someplace during sync and then can be restored?
Where might this info be stored on the PC if I were to have data backups and want to include this data in the backup?

If you are syncing everything with your computer then nothing will be lost. Everything that is created on the iPhone should be syncing to your computer.

You also need to sync your device to your computer (or ICloud). Your music, calendars, contacts, etc, are not part of the iTunes backup.

Sadly, it deleted my whole calendar, even tho I only used it on the laptop.  I am sure I will be missing documents, music, etc.   I have been using Macs since 1991 and this incident just *****!  I avoided this because I thought this would happen.  I hate to update for this same reason.

If you're that concerned, you should probably also get a second external drive, on which you do bootable backups (with a program like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner), as well as putting your important files on a portable storage device (like a memory stick or a DVD), and keep that offsite. That will ensure your files are safe.
    Good luck!
EDIT: I have just found this Mac OS X Hints article, which does what you want, although it doesn't seem all that user-friendly from the description.

  • How to choose what is backed up in icloud?

    Hello,
I would like to find out how to choose what is backed up in iCloud. Mine is full but i dont think everything on my phone needs to be in there. Can you please help me filter what should be backed up and what doesn't.
    Thanks,

You can change the settings as well as delete old backups in "Settings > icloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage". I hope this solves your issue.

  • HT4859 How can I see what I backed to iCloud or iTunes?

How can I see what is backed up to my iCloud?  Pictures are what I am trying ti find.

Your photo stream photos will appear on your iPad in the my photo stream album; photos from the last 30 days will still be in iCloud but cannot be seen on icloud.com.
Camera roll photos are only in iCloud as part of your iCloud backup.  However, you can't see them unless you restore the entire backup to your device.

  • Do i have to select what i back up onto my external hard drive, or does it back up everything automatically?

do i have to select what i back up onto my external hard drive, or does it back up everything automatically?

It depends on the app you want to use to make backups.
If you are going to use Time Machine (recommended because it's the easiest), you just have to set it up and it will back up the whole OS X partition on the external drive, so don't worry. However, you can exclude items if you want. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 Also, have a look at Pondini's site > http://pondini.org
Another option are the cloning apps, like Carbon Copy Cloner. These apps also clone the whole hard drive, but you can manually select the things you want to back up. The advantage of the clones is that you can start up your computer from them

  • TS4036 can I see what was backed up when I did my storage upgrade icloud?

I upgraded my icloud account, and my iphone backed up.  Now that I have lost my phone how do I see what was successfully backed up or not?

The only way to see what was backed up is by restoring form the backup. All of you purchased content, app data and camera roll photos should be in the iCloud backup, but you can't actually see what is in the backup anywhere.
    Take alook at this.

What is backing map in Java?
    Thank you

A Backing Map is a map which is used to implement another map.
    eg.
    - A thread safe map can use a map as a wrapper for a backing map which actually holds the entries.
    - a cache usually has a backing map and the cache is also a map, but smarter.

  • What cloud back up services do you recommend for our new Mac?

What cloud back up services work best with an iMac?

Without a good first and second or third backup plan or regimen in place,
before cloud backup, you still could lose most functional computer use.
The internet cloud is OK if you can access it, quickly & efficiently.
If you can count on that, then you are among a minority worldwide.

While the basics nearby are good, the off-site copy or cloud is a plus
if you travel to & from an office, or several locations and need access
to information, while knowing the primary devices and the media are
also backed up in triplicate, across different media & devices.

A quality externally enclosed hard disk drive setup for use with a
full system clone, to boot & run a Mac from a copy, is a fine idea.
    {carbon copy cloner - bombich software? one of the better bets}
So far, in my several years experience with computers, I'd rather have
access to the backup hardware devices and perform manual ones, too
than rely on some remote servers, over thousands of miles of distance.
Helps to also have a backup computer, a duplicate to run the clone, etc.
Perhaps someone will recommend one of the advertised carbonite or
other brands, however I fail to be impressed by gadgets & gimmicks...
Though some may be fun, I don't have time for fun or wasted expense.
Some other users who contribute here may have fast internet access
of a reliable nature, and have committed a larger portion of their digital
live's work to the 'cloud' but from my experience, clouds are weather.
You can dress for it, marginally predict it; & find a dry/warm place to wait.
    Good luck & happy computing!

Your iCloud account stores your iOS device backups as well as your synced data (contacts, calendars, notes, etc.) and iCloud email (if you have an iCloud email account).  You can see how much is being used on your iPad by going to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage.
If you want to purchase more iCloud storage, you can do this on any of your iOS devices or computers that are signed into your iCloud account, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4874.
