What to backup on Ciscoworks lms 2.6 windows server

Howdy,
I need to do a file level backup of a Ciscoworks lms 2.6 windows server and want to know what i need to backup on the windows server file level?
Basically what partitions, folders, files etc?
Thanks..

Application-wise, just backup NMSROOT (e.g. C:\PROGRA~1\CSCOpx).  To get the dynamic stuff, you will also need a full Windows Registry backup as well.
Typically, when customers ask about FULL LMS server backups we recommend they first do an LMS data backup using the Common Services > Server > Admin > Backup interface.  Then, take the backup directory and back that up to your archive server.  Then do a full server backup (i.e. file system backup).
On a restore, first restore your full server backup.  Then, use the LMS NMSROOT/bin/restorebackup.pl script to restore the LMS data backup you took.  This will ensure database integrity.

  • What is the easiest way to replicate(backup) a VM whose host is Windows Server 2008 R2?

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Manager and I have a Domain Controller as VM (which is running Server 2012 R2) and I would like to enable replicationfor this VM(I want to back up the Domain Controlloer).
Could you please tell me the easiest way of doing this?
    Thanks,
    Radu

    Hi, Radu,
From my perspective, in this case the backup/replication solution should:
Perform image-level backup, as it’s always preferable to use such method for backing up/replicating virtual machines.
Guarantee application consistency. That’s being said, not only should it backup VMs running special application in consistent (VSS-aware) mode, but also it should apply
application-specific settings to prepare each application to perform
VSS-aware restore on the next VM startup.
    Support 2012 R2 platform.
We’re using Veeam for the same purposes, as it does have abovementioned functionality. Though, you can stick to whatever solution that can boast with the listed options.
    Kind regards, Leonardo.

    Hello Lucian,
the issue may be caused by an invalid entry inside the following registry sub tree.
    HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
Please open the registry editor with regedit.
Expand and local to the subtree, check if there is an entry that has a ".bak" value appended. If so, this may be cause the failure when trying to resolve the SID of the writer.
Please backup the registry key first, and then delete that entry with the extra ".bak" and reboot the server then test the backup
Run the command "vssadmin list writers" and make sure all the writers are stable with no errors
Please look for errors in application event logs after you initiate backup on the server

  • What standards are used by Microsoft for developing Windows Server and other products

Where can I obtain or solicit information regarding Microsoft software development process compliance with national/international standards? I need to create regulatory documentation, and knowing which ISO, IEC, ANSI, etc. standards that Microsoft uses to
develop specific applications (including but not limited to Windows Server 2012 Standard) would be most useful.
My efforts to obtain this information (live chat, calls to different support numbers and tweeting) have been fruitless.
Any help would be much appreciated.

As to the 'broken' link.  The editor in the forums has a nasty habit.  If one concludes a sentence with an URL and puts a period after the URL to designate the end of the sentence, the forum editor includes the period as part of the URL.
Delete the period and the link will work.
What do you mean by 'standards' for software development?  If you mean something like ISO/IEC 12207, I think you are going to have to search Microsoft web sites and then see if you can strike up a conversation with authors of articles you find.
I am not aware of any specific publication of conformance to such standards within Microsoft.  Even though I worked for them for 12 years in a non-engineering role, I tended to take an interest in this sort of thing based on interests developed in previous
    roles.
Here is a link (http://www.microsoft.com/security/sdl/resources/publications.aspx) and here (http://www.microsoft.com/security/sdl/default.aspx) that
covers their Secure Development Lifecycle.  To a great extent, Microsoft 'wrote the book' on how to do secure development (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-security-development-lifecycle-michael-howard/1110830298?ean=9780735622142).
It may appear dated, as it was published about eight years ago, but it became the textbook for some college courses on secure development.

I have been using Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition for my business purpose and there are at-least 30 Users who logged in into the server Via Remotely from different location. I want to upgrade my server with latest one with some extra cores and RAM for
better and smooth operations for all users. So, i have a doubt whether my CAL Licenses will works with Windows Server 2012 or i need to purchase the new one for the same?
Moreover, if i don't upgrade my Windows to any 2012 edition and stay on 2008 Standard Edition how much maximum RAM can be installed at a time? is there any limitations? if Yes, please let me know how do i upgrade my Windows 2008 Standard Edition to any other
business edition to avoid such limitations of RAM?
Waiting for your favorable and quick response.

    Hi again,
th eupgrade optiuon from Standard 2008 to Enterprise 2008 was only available for customers with open value contract with activ esoftware assurance then they can purchase the step up license from Standard to Enterprise.
the only way to have the Enterprise 2008 Edition is to make th edowngrad efrom 2012 Standard to 2008 Enterprise. it means that if you purchase the 2012 R2 Standard Edition, you may downgarde to Enterprise 2008/2008 R2. th ebest way to make the downgrade
to 2008 R2 Enterprise is to purchase the current Version 2012 R2 Standard in volume licensing than you can download diretly from VLSC the Enterprise Edition.
with your downgrade you can still using the 2008 CALs.

  • Windows Server Backup cannot backup to network or mapped drive - Microsoft what were you thinking?

I still cannot believe that you cannot do a scheduled backup to a network drive in windows server 2008.  You can only do it to a local internal/external drive.  Microsoft are you crazy?  That goes against all best practices for backing up your data when you should have a backup at least 60 miles away from the original server.  Gives us back the NT Backup tool or provide a solution for this.

Your feedback is valid. This issue has been fixed in WS2008 R2.

That doesn't exactly help people who run windows server 2008 now does it?
something so trivial that could be done in server 2003 with NTBackup and it wasnt included in server 2008? WHo overlooked that.
Why can this not be fixed in server 2008 with a update or a service pack?
Also, then why is it you can do a MANUAL backup to a network drive, but not a scheduled one?

  • Windows Server Backup scheduled task run successfully but backup do not start (not running) on Windows Server 2012

    Hi,
A backup job has been setup on Windows Server 2012 (Platform: Win32NT; ServicePack: ; Version: 6.2.9200.0; VersionString : Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0) via Windows Backup Software UI (Local Backup 1.0).
It is appearing as a scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup" belonging to user 'nt authority\system' in task scheduler.
The problem is that the Backup job never start despite the scheduled task running and completing successfully (when run automatically or manually)!
Would you be able to explain why and assist in resolving that issue?
    Here is what we know:
When the backup is run manually via the Windows Backup Software UI, it works fine.
When the backup is run via command line (as set in schedule task) in a cmd command prompt (as local/domain 'administrator' or as 'nt authority\system' which is possible by running command prompt via 'PsExec.exe -i -s cmd'), something like "%windir%\System32\wbadmin.exe
start backup -templateId:{f11eb3aa-74e7-4ff4-a57b-d8d567ee3f77} -quiet", it works fine.
If you manually run the preset scheduled task while logged in as administrator, the task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
Idem if you schedule task is run automatically at scheduled time.
The schedule task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.
It is confirmed by running the following in a command prompt as 'nt authority\system':
    schtasks /run /tn "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup"
SUCCESS: Attempted to run the scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup".
Despite success result, the Backup job does not start running...
No errors or warning appears anywhere in Event Logs (Microsoft > Windows > Backup or Task Scheduler) nor in the scheduled task History tab. The schedule task complete successfully but no Backup job is run...
If scheduled task automatically set by Windows Backup software is duplicated (copied) and set manually it runs fine as 'administrator' and as 'nt authority\system' (subject that 'nt authority\system' is added to the 'Backup Operators' AD group).
Here is an export of the current pre-set schedule task, is there any settings that need to be changed to make it works?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Once again, the issue is not to run the backup manually from the command line but to have it run via the scheduled task setup by the Windows Backup software.
By default, the schedule task is to be run as NT Authority\System, and when run under this account, the backup does not start (even though account is member of Backup Operators) and job can manually be run via elevated command prompt. This is not a normal
behavior and constitute a major bug in Windows Server 2012.
From my understanding the NT Authority\System account is a built-in account from Windows that should by default be part of the Administrators group (built-in) even though it does not explicitly appears like it in AD by default.
This account shall have by default Administrators rights and Backup Operators rights (via the Administrators group) without being explicitly added to those groups (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/windows/desktop/ms684190%28v=vs.85%29.aspx). By design
it is supposed to be the most powerful account which has unrestricted access to all local system resources. If that is not the case (as it seems) then this would constitute a major bug in Windows Server 2012 edition.
As said previously and as you confirmed, currently by default NT Authority\System on Windows 2012 server cannot start backup manually via an elevated command prompt unless it is manually added to Backup Operators (or Administrators) group. But wouldn't that
constitute a bug of Windows Server 2012?
Our server has not yet been restarted since I added NT Authority\System account to the Administrators group explicitly manually so I cannot yet confirmed it would sort the issue. Indeed it is heavily in use so cannot easily be restarted. Will confirm when
    done.
We also have an additional problem where after a while of last reboot, part of the Exchange ECP can no longer be properly loaded in the web browser due to compilation error (compilation is done via NT Authority\System account which seems to no longer have
sufficient right to compile .NET code). What is strange is that it works at first and then stop working at some point... I am hopeful that adding NT Authority\System to the Administrators group would sort this issue as well but once again, that shall not be
    needed!!!
Could a Windows Server 2012 update introduced some security policy changes or else that prevent NT Authority\System to have full power?

    Hi,
The logs of backup are at Windows Logs\Application where the source is Backup. You can use the Optimize Backup Performance dialog box to configure incremental backup.

  • How to create Auto weakly backup in Windows Server 2012

    Hello
           1. I want to set auto backup in windows server 2012 Weakly.

By configuring automatic backup, you can schedule this task according to your choice(weekly/monthly). You can use backup schedule wizard accessed from the Windows Server Backup user interface (Wbadmin.msc).

  • Lost Windows Server Backup, historical backups. Backup seems to have restarted from a fresh full backup. How can I get to those old backups?

    Scenario with very bad outlook:
Friday-16th, early AM.  Win2008 SBS Server crashes due to RAID5 issues, bad disk.  Found that server was NOT configured with hot spare and for some reason the controller had marked a 2nd disk bad..which turned out not to be the case.
Had a single external USB backup drive being fed by Windows Server Backup.  Obtained support from vendor and was able to regain the RAID and start the server.
Soon became apparent that Exchange was having serious issues - edb was corrupt and not mountable.  Restore edb from backup, repaired and was eventually able to mount.  Then found it had Hub Transport issues.  Researching that when it was noticed
NTFS events being logged at a high rate.  Restarted system to repair the filesystem, which was successful.
After the FS repair, found the Exchange edb, new edb I had created to migrate mailboxes to, and public edb all 0k in size.
Restored the edb again and commenced repair, which eventually read Clean Shutdown again...but could not get it to mount.  Exchange was having various issues seemingly with AD.
Changed backup time to avoid a backup that day, as did not want to back up while RAID was rebuilding - had inserted a replacement for the failed drive.
Monday/19th, was advised that much of the data was corrupt.  This is an accounting firm and relies heavily on their data, especially since the last time their ext USB was rotated was Nov6 2013.  They now have no year end backup, nor a backup from
    post tax season 2014.
Is it possible to recover any of the historical backups prior to the full backup/restart?
Oh, and all Shadow Copies for the impacted volume/drive are gone.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Please use the “Wbadmin get versions” command to check the backup versions on the server. If there is only latest shadow copy, you may not recover any of the historical backups prior to the full backup.

  • Can I use Azure Backup and Windows Server Backup in a Windows Server ?

Can I use Azure Backup and Windows Server Backup in a Windows Server ?
I want to use both Azure Backup and Windows Server Backup for two senarios.
For Disaster Recovery = Azure Backup to Azure Storage.
For non-Disacter Recovery = Windows Server Backup to a on-premises disk.
The non-Disaster Recovery mean a file or folder recovery, disk crash recovery, migrate to another servers.
The non-Disaster Recovery need the speed of recovery just like 10 TB recovery as soon as possible.
If I can use both Azure Backup and Windows Server Backup in a Windows Server,
Are there any notes for using both ?

    Hi Yoshihiro Kawabata,
    Thanks for posting here!
Azure Backup to Azure Storage and Windows Server Backup to a on-premises disk. These are two different question and can be answered individually.
Azure Backup to Azure Storage - Possible.
Windows Server Backup to a on-premises disk - Possible.
Can I use Azure Backup and Windows Server Backup in a Windows Server? Is a question.
I will check on this and get back to you at the earliest.
    Thanks!
