What to buy? Does the Zen Sleek Photo have line-

Hello,
I am looking for a MP3 Player and recorder that has the following:
. Quality line-in recording capabilities, preferably built in, but if not at least avaible through and attachment or something.
2. Quality voice recording capibilities to MP3 files.
3. Variable Sample Rate
4. Variable Bit Rate
5. A very good Signal to noise ratio.
6. At least 2 gig (perferably much more) of dri've space.
I am not so concerned about Radio capabilities.
I am not so concerned about size and weight.
I am mainly using the player/recorder to record classes that are hooked up to a stereo system (hence the
need for quality line-in recording) as well as classes that are not hooked up to a audio system, hence the need for quality microphone recording.
I want high quality recordings, but with some flexibilty regarding things like sample rate if file size becomes an issue.
I would like not to have to constantly upload my recordings to my PC, hence the need for substantial dri've space.
I am curious about the Creative Zen Sleek Photo (20 GB). It seemed to have a lot of what I was looking for. Is the bit rate adjustable and is there line-in recording for this model?
Please let me know what products are avaible that have what I am looking for.
Thank You, Ezra

Nope, I havent seen any complaints about the MicroPhoto's headphone jack, and I have had no problems with mine.
You should be fine with it. And keep your eyes open for the sales, I saw Best Buy selling the 8GB for $30.
Good luck.

As my title says, does the Zen Micro Photo 8GB have Jack Stick problems?
Some claims that Creative fixed this issue, and some claims that it still exists, does some of you have experienced problems with the ZMP?

Since there is no definiti've answer from Creative regarding this issue, I plan in the interim to keep my headphones plugged in as much as possible. My long term solution is to purchase (for approx $5.00) a 3.5 mm male/female headphone jack and use it as the sacrificial phone jack. This way I can remove my phones as much as I like. I am not going to take the chance. I think the long term solution is the way to go even if they fixed this problem. Over time the phone jack is going to loose some connectivity due to repetiti've use. This in turn creates an annoying audible noise picked up by your headphones. Just a thought.

• Does the Zen Sleek docking station NEED a power adapt

I already have a docking station for my Zen Sleek which is connected to my PC.
I would like to get another one for my hi-fi downstairs so that I can take advantage of the line out socket. Does the dock need power to provide the line-out socket so am I going to have to sort out a second power supply as well?
If I do need a second power supply, would it be ok to just buy a uni'versal power supply (providing the current is sufficient) and plug that in, which would be cheaper than a Creative OE one?

The battery pack for the V200 is a different size/shape to the one for the TX, NX, TX FM etc. More important I suppose is whether the actual MP3 module is the same size or not; whether the V200 module will fit in the TX battery compartment or not.
Creative's official answer will probably be that they are different. On first looks they appear different but someone with both players might be able to give you a better answer.

• What windows services does the Zen Xtra depend

I was disabling services in WinXP to speed up and clean up what boots up in Windows and now my Zen stopped being recognized by the Nomad Explorer as well as MediaSource. MediaSource actually crashes completely now if the Zen is hooked up.
I'd hate to turn all my services back on but if someone knows right off hand, that'd be helpful. Thanks
Jay

It's difficult to know with services because it could be piggy backing off something else.
The Creative CD ROM service is the only one I can think of that's directly Creative.
But I'd be interested to know if you find out...

• What song info does my Zen Sleek really re

Bizarre: I load two albums into the Sleek. Both have track # tags. Both have track number in the filename. One of them appears in track order. The other appears in alpha order. I have no clue what the difference is. I need Creative to tell me. This device is not useful if album tracks are going to be sorted alphabetically.

You may be surprised at what IS in your tags.
Try using a mass tagger that reads both id3v and v2 tags.
MP3Library is particularly good for this - get it at http://www.jumpingcholla.com/jce_nomad.htm

• Does the Zen Xtra 30GB have shuff

Thanks for any help.

at the top of this very screen, go to support, then click on product documentation. then enter your players info and it will find the manual for you

• Does Zen Sleek Photo require AC adapt

I am considering buying the Zen Sleek Photo 20gb in a refurb model. My only concern is that customer reviewers state that even though the manual says it comes with an AC charger (and that it is required for charging) it does not have one and that you are required to buy it aftermarket for about $30. Is this true?BTW, I just purchased the 8gb Microphoto and have just installed it and played one classical album. It appears to be a very fine unit. Can anyone comment as to whether the Zen Sleek Photo is at least as good a product as the Microphoto?

Thanks for the quick reply and the information. I'm assuming you mean that I can, in fact, charge the unit with the equipment that comes with it. The reason I'm concerned about this is that the reviewers claim that the AC adapter that the manual claims is in the box in not there with the refurbished model and that it must be purchased separately. It seemed that they were claiming that it was useless without the adapter.

• Zen Sleek Photo, the longer I own it, the more irritated I

I've had mine for maybe /2 years now, and I am starting to desire an MP3 player that actually works smoothly. Sometimes the screen freezes and makes songs skip. Half the time, the sorry software known as Media Explorer freezes and will not let me transfer my music. I tried Media Player for transfers, and it does not even "see" my Zen. And none other of the Creative programs can get around this problem for some reason. Theres a couple gigs of music on my computer that cannot be transferred because of "Unspecified Error"s occurring. I've tried shortening file names, posting on here, numerous resets, and nothing works. Bit rate does not appear to have anything to do with it either, as all the songs that will not transfer do not share a uniform bit rate.
Next, has Creative ever offered any type of Update for the Zen Sleek Photo?
No.
To date, I've never seen one. Unless someone can show me otherwise. This appears to be the blacksheep of the family, because there is practically zero support for this thing. I would imagine that the majority of the problems I've had could be fixed with a simple update, but I may try to pee a hole through a rock instead. At least I know thats possible.
Zune, you're looking pretty good.

Creatives website says there aren't any new updates for me. I hesitate to reformat as I don't want to wipe it clean and then still not be able to add music, pictures, etc. The Zen does work great, just isn't recognized. I've read this same problem with other models and tried the suggestions, nothing works. Any new ideas? I dont' want to buy a new MP3/iPod. Thanks
Have you tried connecting to another computer? not yours maybe friend owns a Vista? You would not have to install ANY Creative software to check.Rear usb ports. Did you have WMP prior to the SP3 update? I know that is a special cord for the player ( i own a sleekphoto) are you using the cord that is made by Creative & not a generic one?The genreics can damage your device. Did you reinstall WMP?You won't need to buy another player since it works.

• Zen Sleek Photo, to buy or not to b

I have never used or owned an MP3 player before, but as I now travel a lot I intend to buy one.
I have spent quite some time reading various reviews of MP3 players on the internet and the Zen Sleek Photo seems to suit my requirements.
However the most important requirements to me, are that the player is mechanically robust and the software reliable. Is this the case with this player?

The Zen Sleek Photo is a great player. I wish they'd give it an Audible update though.
The player is fairly robust but I would advise purchasing a protecti've case rather than just using the pouch provided. This will prevent the screen getting scratched etc.
Creative MediaSource Organiser and MediaExplorer are very easy to use (very much like Windows Explorer with a lot more features), and you can also use Windows Media Player 0 or Windows Explorer if you are used to these programs. If you are transferring photos you can get them to fit the screen better with MediaExplorer (select to resize for screen).
Pros:
-Sound quality is the best (as with all Creative players) and you can eliminate sreechy treble using customisable EQ
-FM radio is powerful and not just a gimmick
-Displays thousands of colours for photos
-genuinely sleek and compact design
-intuiti've navigation and software
-good voice recorder (don't shout too loud very close up as this causes sound ripples in the display!)
-can download music from just about anywhere, purchase or subscription
-great 9-hour battery life
Cons:
-no Audible support
-can't browse photos whilst listening to music, and no album art facility
-plays aritsts/genres in normal play mode by alphabetical track title, not alphabetical album (recently discovered this)
-can get display errors (probably a one off but my friend has a contrasting vertical line on his screen)
-touchpad takes some getting used to
-proprietary dongle for USB and charging, so you can't use any old USB cable or power supply

• Zen Sleek Photo - Can't reload firmw

I acidentally erased the firmware on my Zen Sleek Photo and I've been having troubles re-loading it. I downloaded the only firmware available on Creative's site for the Zen Sleek Photo and tried to run it, but it keeps saying that my player is not connected. My player is in fact connected and I don't know why it's not picking it up. I know Microsoft Windows is picking it up because I get that pop up that asks what I want to do when a media device is connected. I am basically stuck in recovery mode now because I can't load the firmware. Does anyone know how to fix this?

After hours of searching around the forums, I finally found the solution. I downloaded the hotfixes found here http://ask.americas.creative.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE?New,Kb=ww_english_add,U={B8F6030-DA4F-D3-94F4-00500463020E},Company={CEAE26D-879-4C00-AC9F-03BC258F7B70},d=3025443648,VARSET=ws:http://us.creative.com,case=793
They'll fix the problem even if you don't use an online music subscription.

• ZEN Sleek Photo Volume/Clipping questi

Hi all,
I was wondering. Does anyone happen to know if/when the Zen Sleek Photo volume clips the audio signal at a certain point? Out of a 25 volume, with no extra EQ or bass, at what point will the player's output start clipping?
I ask this because I am using this for my car stereo on the headphone output and want to make sure I'm not clipping so I don't ruin my speakers with all the watts I'm running.

It shouldn't. You turn the volume all the way up on the player & adjust the volume for the speakers with the car stereo volume control.

• Zen Sleek Photo - XP doesn't install player

Hi peeps,
Being a Creative fan :smileysurprised: I decided to add the Zen Sleek Photo to my repertoire of Creative kit (Gigaworks S750 and X-Fi Fatality SoundBlaster).
Well, it arri'ved this morning and after installing the software (except WMP0 as I already had that) I plumbed in the player and after getting the XP bubble "Found New Hardware" and the "Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard", when prompted to install the software for it, all I'm getting is:-
"... There was a problem installing this hardware
MTP Device
An error occured during the installation of the device
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fasion..."
Any ideas as to what the problem is?
Hope someone can help as I'm mega frustrated that I can't even get any of my tunes on it to even give it a whirl - looks nice though
Many thanks in advance,

In reference to SSR's post, sure, I accept that these issues are not exactly unresolvable, but there is TOO much inconvenience involved for TOO many people. It shouldn't be a case of trawling through umpteen websites/FAQ's just to get a vague idea of what *might* be causing a problem. And since it appears these issues are quite frequent (from a commercial aspect at least) IMHO, Creative should attempt to proffer some easier resolution to the potential pitfalls, possibly by adding a few extra bits of software/instructions with the product.
Agreed
Creative should perform more checks on the computer to make sure that everything is required and installed and configured correctly to use the player. The steps listed in the MTP FAQ <a href='http://www.nomadness.net/modules.php?name=FAQ&myfaq=yes&id_cat=8&categories =Nomad+Jukebox+Zen#228' target=_blank>here. Are the most common methods to solve device detection issues. I'm sure Creative is aware of these problems and that these can be done. However Microsoft should be involved as it is their standard and Creative is simply making their products to the standard set out by Microsoft. Hopefully when WMP comes out, Microsoft would implement these changes or even change the way the computer recognizes MTP devices without disturbing the existing programs that do support MTP, like Notmad Explorer and Media Monkey. The suggestions listed in the FAQ are from Microsoft (hotfixes) and the users who have posted on the Creative, Dell, and iRi'ver forums. The suggestions were simply gathered up and put together.
<a href='http://www.myfilehut.com/userfiles/54685/fixup.zip' target=_blank>This file basically does everything listed in the FAQ, just doesn't download the hotfixes for you, but does do the registry changes, the Windows Services, and other things as well. Its a simple solution which I will start giving as suggestions more and more, hopefully it will end up in the MTP FAQ.

• Zen Sleek Photo Improveme

I'm just wondering if Creative ever plans on giving more features to the Zen Sleek Photo through a firmware update. For example, is it possible to be able to listen to music while viewing photos? Or is it possible to other things while you are listening to the radio? Maybe even add some new skins (the current default skins are very poor, not only because they don't look very nice but they are simply difficult to see because of the color scheme)? And how about Windows Vista 32 and 64 bit drivers? I can't remember for sure now, but when I think when I tried Vista out, the Zen Sleek Photo did not like Windows Media Player or IE7...will this at least be fixed?
I would really like to see certain things fixed with the Zen Sleek Photo through a firmware update of some-sort, I believe this player has more potential. Is it possible for at least one company out there to just try making a simgle quality product that is reasonably priced and is well supported instead of just creating more players...each with a few more features than the last. Of course, how would you worm every possible cent out of our pockets then, eh?
Gonzell

Dear people of the ZEN world. Please do not bang on Creative. They design their products that will work on current operating systems. It seems like the only time problems crop up is when M*oft designs new software, then there are problems. Wish they just fixed existing problems not create more. I have the Sleek Photo and it works flawlessly with XP Home. I did not install the optional media software from M*oft for fear it would screw something up. Just installed what came from Creative and between that and explorer I can do all that you can do with Sleek Photo, play music and view photos. If I want to keep a schedule I will use a note book, not waste space on Sleek Photo. So please, once again, do not bang on Creative. Look at it this way, you buy a new car, now before you can dri've it you have to fix or rebuild the road in front of you. Thank you and have a nice day ;DMessage Edited by z2z3z4z on -3-200609:20 AM
