What to buy into

Have tried Lightroom for 30 days and really liked it. I want to buy into this and note that I can buy it outright together with Photoshop from various internet sites reasonably cheaply.  When I go on the Adobe site I am only offered licences for a year for a price close to that for the outright purchase on said internet sites.  The difference seems to be that Adobe Creative cloud is included as part of the package.  I appreciate that storage space for photos is a headache.  I have a couple of external drives that I use for this.  What are the advantages if any of going through the Adobe site and buying the bundle including, Photoshop, Lightroom and Creative Cloud as opposed to buying the first two programmes outright over the internet?  Thanks in advance for your help.  It might assist you to know that I am a keen amateur photographer and probably need to store around 4,000 pictures a year.  I am not particularly knowledgeable about technical matters but am not technophobic.

Beware of too-good-to-true offers on the web - they're often pirated (stolen) and the serial numbers provided may or may not be accepted by Adobe when you install the software.
The difference seems to be that Adobe Creative cloud is included as part of the package.
Adobe Creative Cloud is not a product included in a package. It is Adobe's generic name for their subscription offerings.
You cannot buy the Creative Cloud - you subscribe.
With Creative Cloud offerings you sign up for a membership and pay a monthly fee, every month, for as long as you want to use the software. When you stop paying the monthly fee, the software stops working.
The major advantage with the Creative Cloud is that all major upgrades and minor updates are included in the membership fee for no extra cost.

    That's kind of a big question. It depends on what you're recording and what kind of results you want and what your budget is.
    While M-Audio is a respected brand you certainly don't need any one particular brand. In some cases you can plug directly into the Mac's line-in. Of course you get better results and more flexibility with an interface, particularly if you use a microphone.
    Check zzSounds, Sweetwater, MusiciansFriend, for Audio Interfaces. You want to consider USB vs. Firewire, how many inputs, do you need phantom power for a condenser mic, etc.
    Check out the PreSonus Firebox and the Inspire, or the M-Audio Firewire Solo, or their USB FastTrack. (Firewire is generally more reliable overall but a bit pricier.)

    Hello Karen,
    If you are using Final Cut Express, then look for camcorders that are AVCHD camcorders.  Look especially for the AVCHD logo and specific mention of AVCHD in the specs.  Most of the major manufacturers produce good quality camdcorders - Canon, Sony, etc.
    Also, be aware that there are a lot of "not quite AVCHD" camcorders on the market (sometimes they say they record video as MPEG4-H.264/AVC) - buyer beware!
    Most everything you are going to find on the market today is HD, which stands for "high-def".
    Regarding your question about the Panasonic camcorder, it's best if you post that as a separate question, and please identify the specific model camcorder and the Easy Setup you are using in FCE.

    Well, the web site building we can get out of the way rather easily:  You cannot build websites with any Photoshop related applications.  Adobe has other applications for that.
    You can still buy the full version of Photoshop CS6 with a perpetual license—no monthly payments and you own it. $700 for the standard version, $1,000 for the extended version.
    The Photographer's deal gives you a subscription to both Photoshop and Lightroom for $10 per month, but you never get to own the software.  The moment you stop paying, the software ceases to work.
    The Cloud thing is not really on-line.  It resides on your computer.  It only has to call the mother ship once a month or so.
    Then there's the bargain-basement priced, emasculated Photoshop Elements, with some hand-holding features.
    I'm a septuagenarian too, but then I've been using computers for decades, Photoshop seriously for over twelve years.  Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its very long and steep learning curve.
    Depending on exactly how much editing you need to do to those products shots, you may be satisfied with Ps Elements mentioned above.
    There are trial versions for all of the above.

    I have also been looking at the same two cameras. Has anything changed on the use of the HG10 since your last posting on Nov. 20th?
    I currently have the HV10 (mini dv tape) and have been looking at the HV20 but the HG10 is appealing.
    It has firewire out so I assumed it would write to the Mac hard drive the same as the tape unit. Seems the output would be the same ... but what do I know??

    Can you tell me what to buy? I have a Mac OSX 10.5.8 Intel MacBook. I want to close the case and use a separate keyboard and my HDTV as a monitor. The TV has a VGA connector like this:

    In order to engage "clamshell mode" you'll also have to have a mouse connected, in addition to that keyboard. You can use either USB or Bluetooth, you just need to make sure that they're both connecting the same way (can't do a USB keyboard and Bluetooth mouse).
    Does your TV not have a DVI or HDMI connection? VGA is usually an analog signal, whereas the machine is outputting a digital signal. There's the prospects of clarity loss.

    The USB airport dongles aren't that great, require specialized drivers, which may or may not work, and that model supports the original airport card which looks like:
    and can not be purchased at the Apple Store. Several places that sell used and refurbished Macs in England may be able to get you that card. I'd do a search on Google for such places. It supports 802.11b, but not 802.11g or 802.11n speeds, though most WiFi Access points offers 802.11b support.

    This only offers a better GPU for external displays. The internal will still be the original. You can't upgrade the original GPU directly.

    all offer CD-RW and DVD-RW drives for that model. Note though, iDVD, if it does run will run extremely slowly if at all. The oldest Mac that supports iDVD with any reasonable speed is the G4/733 processor PowerMac desktop. And that at 1 hour of video encoded in 2 hours.
    The internal hard drive can only be upgrade to 120 GB per partition, and only Parallel ATA, and not SATA. Therefore any internal drive you might be looking for would have to conform to those specs, and I'd only purchase internal drives by Seagate and Western Digital. Note that for higher capacities, 5400 RPM drives are as fast as the 7200 RPM drives that are lower capacities because of the denser track density.

    Should be observed. I would not exceed 512 MB, even though some RAM vendors may say it is possible to do so. Mac OS X is particularly sensitive to the specs of the computer being observed. If you exceed such specs, kernel panics, and heat issues may crop up.
    P.S. Please note, avoid using all uppercase. It makes it look like you are shouting, and based on internet net etiquette may be considered rude by some. I'm sure that's not your intention, just thought I'd give you the heads up!

    I have both an iPad and a highly capable smartphone (HTC Incredible), which while not an iPhone, fills the same needs in my life. If I had to choose one device, phone or iPad, it would have to be phone as text messaging is my primary mode of communciation, everyone has my phone number and text messaging on the iPad would not be as convenient and an iPad won't fit in my pocket.
    The iPad sits somewhere between my Macbook and my phone. It has pretty much replaced the Windows XP netbook I used to take out and about. With it's stellar battery life, huge screen and instant on, it's much pleasanter to use while sitting in a coffee shop or while eating lunch alone.
    However, without knowing your needs, it would be pretty hard to make a recommendation.

  • Replacing Airport Extreme Card in Late 2008 MBP - What to buy??

    I've limped along for about 2 years now with my wifi constantly dropping while everyone else has a strong, constant signal. Doesn't matter where I am, it's always dropping and takes ages to reconnect. I've tried everything advised on the forum etc and am now about to buy something else as my main machine. I don't want to get rid of my MBP though so am planning on installing new memory and hard drive and while I'm doing that, want to replace the airport extreme card. The MBP will then become my secondary machine.
    Problem is, I can't figure out what I need to buy to replace the **** card! Seems like a lot I'm finding are either for machines that never had cards or for 2009 or newer. I just need to know which card to buy.
    OR . . . hearing that they are a pain to get to (keeping in mind I'll have the guts exposed while I upgrade the memory and HD) and fiddly . . . is there something external to plug into a USB I should get instead?

    I'm already upgrading to 8GB of RAM and I'm planning on adding a Solid State Hard Drive since it will be a secondary machine. I really don't want to replace the optical drive too. At that point it's got new components in an old chassis with an old CPU.
    I've been to the Genius Bar (back when I lived in a place where there was one in town) and they couldn't replicate the issue but as soon as I left it started up again. There are times when it holds the signal for a good hour or more or days like today when it's dropping it every few minutes. It's completely random.
    No. This girl is going to go build her own PC with a fantastic GPU so as to kick some Diablo butt and the old Macbook Pro will only get used when I don't need it for anything serious. And I am most certainly not dropping another $2k + on a new MBP no matter how shiny they are! It's the end of an era as I've been using Macs exclusively for over 10 years now.
