What to buy?

Hi all.
I am thinkign about ether buying a airport extreme or airport express but i don't know witch of them is best for me
My broadband is trhow a adsl and I am using a Netgear router but that roter is only using 108mb/s and that is low for my werless network
I have those and whant to connect them to the wi-fi but don't know if the extreme or the express will be best for my chosing.
1 apple tv
1 LG blu-ray with wi-fi
1 multi printer with wi-fi
1 TV with wi-fi
3 phones
1 pad
1 desktop
2 Laptops

I am using this one http://support.netgear.com/product/DG834PN
have hade this one for very long time think about 5 years or so have never had a problem with it but the wi-fi is good but not when I am streaming my HD movies to apple tv 3 take very long time for the movie to start some times up to copple of minutes.
So my idea was using the netgear as the modem and the express or the extreme as a wi-fi network for my devices.

I do video productions for a small local TV station. I use Final Cut Express to edit. I need a new video camera but am at a loss as to what to buy. I know I will get a digital camera but do not know the difference between just digital and digital HD. Also, I can not afford an expensive camera and need some advice on which of the available cameras would be best and also work well with a Mac. One last issue, I currently use a Panasonic #CCD camera that takes a tape. When I load video to Final Cut the audio and video are out of sinc. Go figure. Can anyone help with these questions. Karen

    Hello Karen,
If you are using Final Cut Express, then look for camcorders that are AVCHD camcorders.  Look especially for the AVCHD logo and specific mention of AVCHD in the specs.  Most of the major manufacturers produce good quality camdcorders - Canon, Sony, etc.
Also, be aware that there are a lot of "not quite AVCHD" camcorders on the market (sometimes they say they record video as MPEG4-H.264/AVC) - buyer beware!
Most everything you are going to find on the market today is HD, which stands for "high-def".
Regarding your question about the Panasonic camcorder, it's best if you post that as a separate question, and please identify the specific model camcorder and the Easy Setup you are using in FCE.

It appears to depend upon the version you will be using:

Based on what I can tell, you may have to go to the second hand market in order to get a MBP that will run a compatible OSX.

Well, the web site building we can get out of the way rather easily:  You cannot build websites with any Photoshop related applications.  Adobe has other applications for that.
You can still buy the full version of Photoshop CS6 with a perpetual license—no monthly payments and you own it. $700 for the standard version, $1,000 for the extended version.
The Photographer's deal gives you a subscription to both Photoshop and Lightroom for $10 per month, but you never get to own the software.  The moment you stop paying, the software ceases to work.
The Cloud thing is not really on-line.  It resides on your computer.  It only has to call the mother ship once a month or so.
Then there's the bargain-basement priced, emasculated Photoshop Elements, with some hand-holding features.
I'm a septuagenarian too, but then I've been using computers for decades, Photoshop seriously for over twelve years.  Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its very long and steep learning curve.
Depending on exactly how much editing you need to do to those products shots, you may be satisfied with Ps Elements mentioned above.
There are trial versions for all of the above.

What to buy to record on garageband?
Do I need something by M-Audio to record vocals or guitar on garageband?

I haven't received my first Mac yet, but it'll be here in a few days. It's a G5 off ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...=STRK:MEWNX:IT Bottom of page.
I want to be ready to use GB.
What would you recommend that I have externally?
    Thanks...seriously...thanks.
    JG

That's kind of a big question. It depends on what you're recording and what kind of results you want and what your budget is.
While M-Audio is a respected brand you certainly don't need any one particular brand. In some cases you can plug directly into the Mac's line-in. Of course you get better results and more flexibility with an interface, particularly if you use a microphone.
Check zzSounds, Sweetwater, MusiciansFriend, for Audio Interfaces. You want to consider USB vs. Firewire, how many inputs, do you need phantom power for a condenser mic, etc.
Check out the PreSonus Firebox and the Inspire, or the M-Audio Firewire Solo, or their USB FastTrack. (Firewire is generally more reliable overall but a bit pricier.)

  • What To Buy?  Canon HV20 or Cannon HG10

After a year of watching HD video on my LCD TV, I'm ready to make the move to a new HiDef camcorder. After reading many reviews I am considering the Cannon HV20. But am also interested in the HG10. I use iMoveHD6.... not interest in iMovie8. Any thoughts about what to buy from you HD video makers out there?

    Karsten,
I have also been looking at the same two cameras. Has anything changed on the use of the HG10 since your last posting on Nov. 20th?
I currently have the HV10 (mini dv tape) and have been looking at the HV20 but the HG10 is appealing.
It has firewire out so I assumed it would write to the Mac hard drive the same as the tape unit. Seems the output would be the same ... but what do I know??

  • What to buy?  I want to close it up & use VGA TV screen

Can you tell me what to buy? I have a Mac OSX 10.5.8 Intel MacBook. I want to close the case and use a separate keyboard and my HDTV as a monitor. The TV has a VGA connector like this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector
There is a lot of contradictory advice on what to buy and I live in Japan so it's harder to get good advice. I'd be happy to hear from you.
By the way, if I close the case to the Macbook and connect to my TV I assume I can use the computer as normal if I have a keyboard. Am I right?

    Hi Deepest Forest,
In order to engage "clamshell mode" you'll also have to have a mouse connected, in addition to that keyboard. You can use either USB or Bluetooth, you just need to make sure that they're both connecting the same way (can't do a USB keyboard and Bluetooth mouse).
Does your TV not have a DVI or HDMI connection? VGA is usually an analog signal, whereas the machine is outputting a digital signal. There's the prospects of clarity loss.

  • WHAT TO BUY TO MAX OUT THIS PISMO BRONZE KEYBOARD POWERBOOK

Hi, pls advise what to buy to max out this powerbook and where best to buy upgrades from.
    POWERBOOK (FIREWIRE) 3,1
    CPU TYPE PowerPC 750 (83.2)
    CPU SPEED 400MHz
37GB HARD DRIVE AT THE MOMENT
I want to install an airport card, or would you advise me to get ausb key to access wifi?
also, is it worth trying to upgrade the graphics card current one being an ATY, RAGE M3
CAN I UPGRADE THE CD ROM DRIVE THAT CAN BE REMOVED BY PULLING A LEVER AT THE FRONT?
what about a back up power cord which one would you all recommend?
My plan was to try to put in a 100gb hard drive 7200rpm
an airport card and max the ram to 1gb.
I am a novice in opening up this powerbook, when you remove the cover you see 1 memory module, where is the second located?
Any other tips to increase the speed/power of this powerbook.
I just want to keep it as a spare working machine for business.
    Many thanks All
    Amin

The USB airport dongles aren't that great, require specialized drivers, which may or may not work, and that model supports the original airport card which looks like:
and can not be purchased at the Apple Store. Several places that sell used and refurbished Macs in England may be able to get you that card. I'd do a search on Google for such places. It supports 802.11b, but not 802.11g or 802.11n speeds, though most WiFi Access points offers 802.11b support.
You can upgrade GPU support via Villagetronic's:
    http://www.villagetronic.com/eprvtbook.html
This only offers a better GPU for external displays. The internal will still be the original. You can't upgrade the original GPU directly.
    http://www.macsales.com/
    http://www.mcetech.com/
    and
    http://www.macresq.com/
all offer CD-RW and DVD-RW drives for that model. Note though, iDVD, if it does run will run extremely slowly if at all. The oldest Mac that supports iDVD with any reasonable speed is the G4/733 processor PowerMac desktop. And that at 1 hour of video encoded in 2 hours.
The internal hard drive can only be upgrade to 120 GB per partition, and only Parallel ATA, and not SATA. Therefore any internal drive you might be looking for would have to conform to those specs, and I'd only purchase internal drives by Seagate and Western Digital. Note that for higher capacities, 5400 RPM drives are as fast as the 7200 RPM drives that are lower capacities because of the denser track density.
The official RAM limit on the article here:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBook_FireWire.html
Should be observed. I would not exceed 512 MB, even though some RAM vendors may say it is possible to do so. Mac OS X is particularly sensitive to the specs of the computer being observed. If you exceed such specs, kernel panics, and heat issues may crop up.
P.S. Please note, avoid using all uppercase. It makes it look like you are shouting, and based on internet net etiquette may be considered rude by some. I'm sure that's not your intention, just thought I'd give you the heads up!

  • I can't decide what to buy ipad or iphone 3GS

I can't decide what to buy ipad or iphone 3GS Can you request me some ideas or solutions...

I have both an iPad and a highly capable smartphone (HTC Incredible), which while not an iPhone, fills the same needs in my life. If I had to choose one device, phone or iPad, it would have to be phone as text messaging is my primary mode of communciation, everyone has my phone number and text messaging on the iPad would not be as convenient and an iPad won't fit in my pocket.
The iPad sits somewhere between my Macbook and my phone. It has pretty much replaced the Windows XP netbook I used to take out and about. With it's stellar battery life, huge screen and instant on, it's much pleasanter to use while sitting in a coffee shop or while eating lunch alone.
However, without knowing your needs, it would be pretty hard to make a recommendation.
    Best of luck.

  • I'd like to replace my hard drive.  How do I know what to buy for my 15-inch early 2008 MacBook Pro?

I am out of room on my hard drive.  I'd like to get a new hard drive and restore my data to the new drive from Time Machine.  How do I know what kind of hard drive to buy for my 15-inch, early 2008 MacBook Pro?  Also, how hard is this to do?

I have changed HDDs several times on the old MBP.  Currently it has a Hitachi 500 GB HDD that came out of my new one.  My adage is that one cannot have too much storage and I think that the 1TB HDD is an excellent choice.  Not only do you get generous capacity, the performance should be (theoretically) comparable to a 750 GB 7200 rpm HDD.  I will be very surprised if there are compatibility problems.
If you bought the HDD from OWC, you should have received Installation instructions.  If not, go to the OWC website and look at the video.  I actually downloaded it so that I could hand write the instructions down step by step.  Also check out iFixit website.  They have step by step instructions that may prove to be useful.
Tools you need:  00 Phillips and #6 Torx Drivers (get good ones).   The instructions make mention of a plastic pry bar (spudger).  I use a stiff piece of plastic like a credit card.
Tips to keep in mind:  Get a large open table space and place a large clean towel on it.  That will protect your MBP and when you drop a screw (and you will) it will not bounce far so you will not have to spend an hour looking for it.
As you take out a set of screws, keep them together (I use wide masking tape.  The little screws will stick to it.)
Keep the sets in sequence.  That will make reassembly much, much easier.
The most difficult steps are removing the keyboard from the MBP body and removing the ribbon cable from the mother board.  In case of the former, work from the back (the display) to the front.  You will initially have to pry it up and then do a lot of jiggling to remove it.  Don't be too timid about it.  At the end of the ribbon cable there is a rectangular connector.  Use your credit card to remove it.  Just pry it off.
The #6 Torx driver is used to take off the 4 mounting pins on the HDD and if I remember correctly there is another place where it is needed, specifically in the battery compartment ( I think).  If the instructions don't say so, keep that in mind and inspect the screw before you select the driver.
Good luck and make sure that you don't have parts left over.
    Ciao.

  • How do I find out excutally what to buy to go wireless

I have an iMac flat panel that I bought in 2003. I recently up graded & added memory. Now it is version 10.4.2 1 GHz powerPC G4 1GB DDR SDRAM. I am going to buy a 17 inch Power Book G4. I have a speed streem modem from my sbc dsl server. I need to know what I need to buy to go wireless. I do not have any cards installed but it has a slot under neath. The new comp already has a card. I am very confused as to what I need I still have apple care & one of the tec. told me they no longer made the cards for my comp. & that I would need a router addaptor & etc. I became very confused as from reading it seems that I need a card & airport extreme base station Can anyone help as how to order the right equipment Thanks Judy

Speaking of just the PowerMac first - yes you could:
    - cable the PowerMac's ethernet port to the cable modem for internet access
    - use the PowerMac's Airport interface to communicate wirelessly to an Airport Express downstairs
Introducing the need to provide shared (and wireless) internet access to a PC suggests another solution:
    - forget about buying an Airport card for the PowerMac
    - buy a non-Apple wireless router
    - connect the cable modem to the router's internet port, and cable the PowerMac to one of the router's LAN ports
    - the PC (with installed wireless adapter) connects wirelessly to the wireless router
    - the Airport Express gets configured as a wireless client to the wireless router. Your PowerMac communicates with the Airport Express via the router.

  • What to buy into

Have tried Lightroom for 30 days and really liked it. I want to buy into this and note that I can buy it outright together with Photoshop from various internet sites reasonably cheaply.  When I go on the Adobe site I am only offered licences for a year for a price close to that for the outright purchase on said internet sites.  The difference seems to be that Adobe Creative cloud is included as part of the package.  I appreciate that storage space for photos is a headache.  I have a couple of external drives that I use for this.  What are the advantages if any of going through the Adobe site and buying the bundle including, Photoshop, Lightroom and Creative Cloud as opposed to buying the first two programmes outright over the internet?  Thanks in advance for your help.  It might assist you to know that I am a keen amateur photographer and probably need to store around 4,000 pictures a year.  I am not particularly knowledgeable about technical matters but am not technophobic.

Seems like there's some confusion here.

Beware of too-good-to-true offers on the web - they're often pirated (stolen) and the serial numbers provided may or may not be accepted by Adobe when you install the software.
The difference seems to be that Adobe Creative cloud is included as part of the package.
Adobe Creative Cloud is not a product included in a package. It is Adobe's generic name for their subscription offerings.
You cannot buy the Creative Cloud - you subscribe.
With Creative Cloud offerings you sign up for a membership and pay a monthly fee, every month, for as long as you want to use the software. When you stop paying the monthly fee, the software stops working.
The major advantage with the Creative Cloud is that all major upgrades and minor updates are included in the membership fee for no extra cost.

  • HT4009 Shouldn't an in-app purchase tell you what your buying is for a specific number of uses?

There is a Word-O-Meter in Words with Friends that can meter how good the word is that you are about to play or if it's valid.  You first get some free uses and then an offer to buy when the free is used up.  What it doesn't tell you is your purchase is only for a limited number of uses and then you have to buy again.  This does not seem right, so wanted to get an opinion.

I completely agree. Just happened to me. Very disappointing. Anyway/where we can rate them?
