What to charge to shoot & edit in HD vs SD.

Hi all,
I just received an inquiry from a company about producing some industrial as well as corporate marketing material in HD.
I currently shoot and edit in SD using the Sony DSR-300 and Premiere CS3. I'd like to pursue the inquiry with a quote but i'm unsure as to what to charge.
I'd like your opinions how much is generally charged to produce a typical video in HD as opposed to SD. I know there are many variables, but a ballpark percentage and/or examples would be appreciated.
I know i'll have to rent an HDV or HD camera and playback deck. I'll also have to upgrade my aging system to be able to capture and edit the HD or HDV footage without problems. Also, i think it would be best to go tape based since the tapeless cameras require expensive memory sticks and additional equipment to off load footage.
Hardware wise, my idea is as follows:
Camera
- Either the Canon H1 w/ tape, PMW-EX1 or AG-HVX200 w/ pc for capture & storage
NLE
- The Supermicro 7045A-WTB barebone tower
- Harpertown E5450 or E5472 quad-core processor or the new intel Penryn family of processors that support the new SSE4.1 instructions
- 4 gbs of ram
- a 4 drive sata II raid 0 video array with hardware controller
- separate sata II drives for system, storage and audio
- blueray dvd burner
- aja xena LHe HD SDI capture card
- cineform Prospect HD
- Nvida Quadro FX video card

I think if you're going to be renting the camera, don't write off solid state recording. The cards do require some investment - if you're buying. But you're not buying, so just make sure the rental house includes enough of them (or a way to offload them) with your camera.
As for what to charge? At a minimum, your price increase needs to cover the cost of the rentals. Beyond that, you should guesstimate how many other HD projects you can expect in the near future, and figure out some way to include the cost of the upgraded editing system spread over those future projects. Meaning if you can expect 10 more HD projects in the next year, divide the cost of the new system by ten and include that as a part of the price increase.

is no real industry standard for storage. However
Fiber Channel is more prevalent in most high def
suites. External Sata raids and internal Sata raids
are gaining popularity however fiber channel offers
"hardware security" with raid controller cards that
let you set up Raid 5 or Raid 6.
Fiber channel is definitely the way we want to go.
What capture card are you looking at?
for HD there are 2 major players BlackMagic
(decklink) or AJA (KONA)
Again I am not sure but I will find out, once I know what they are.

Which is best?

If you want best quality and will be showing the movie from a computer file onto a computer monitor or HD television or burn to blueray and don't mind very large files then shoot full HD (should be 1920 x 1080 = 1080p). You can always export lower-resolution versions if you need them.
If you never want to show full HD then HD (720p) - still pretty good on an HD TV .
640 x 480 is about the same as a standard TV. I wouldn't use that unless you are more interested in having the smallest file size and showing on low-resolution devices - old TV, old phone or tablet or on line. Also for burning to DVD.
I'd advise shooting in the best quality to avoid later regrets that you didn't! (Before too long 4K will become the new HD and Full HD will seem pretty mediocre).

Could try saving as tiff provided layers and transparency are chosen at the time of saving. But it's hard to give a definitive answer as it depends on the final usage. For example PSD's tend to work better in applications like In Design in comparison with tiff.

Adobe Reader for iOS (which is what this forum is for) is for VIEWING PDF files. Not for EDITING PDF files.
There is no file editor software that I'm aware of for iOS devices. You can do limited editing of PDFs on Acrobat Pro for Macintosh or Windows. This software is NOT free.

What is it like to edit HD with FCE4 and multiple video tracks

I would like to get an idea of what it's like to edit HD on final cut express on an Intel based Power MAC (let's say 2.8GHZ with a large hard drive and 4mb of memory)
If one was to have 4 video tracks and a track of green screen with various transitions ( 4 minutes of video)
I really can't get a handle on this when reading the threads and forums.
When I hear people say I have no trouble editing HD on an Intel 2.8 power MAC, I often wonder that may be the case if you are editing one track of video, but what about multiple tracks, transitions and green screen layers?
If anyone is doing this on FCE with an Intel based Power MAC, I'd like to hear what you are experiencing. I know it;s different for everyone but I'd like to hear some examples and times

Four streams of video with effects can be handled by FCE using Unlimited RT, but it does depend on the computer and the drives. The internal drive of an iMac for instance would be hard pressed to do this without a lot of stuttering on playback. A fast external drive like a RAID would be needed to get good performance.
