What to delete on internal HD if using external HD for storage

Need to free up mac mini 2010 HD space of 200 GB of music.  Currently have an EHD as a backup and may add another for backup.  What gets deleted on the internal HD if I have my itunes backed up to the two EHDs.  I deleted somethiong on my emac years ago and had to rebuilt my itunes collection , do no t what to mess it up again.  Also, if I partition one EHD that is a clone of the mac min/itunesi can the other EHD be just an itunes backup?

What gets deleted on the internal HD if I have my itunes backed up to the two EHDs
Nothing as those are backups on the external drives.
Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from your internal to the external (not a backup).
Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library and select the /iTunes/ folder you copied to the external.
Then you can delete /Music/iTunes/ folder from your internal.

• Turning off internal monitor while using external one

Hello, Apple Support Communities.
Before OSX Lion, anyone could turn off internal monitor while using external one, by waking up computer with lid closed, and the internal monitor will be kept turned off. But now, -I wonder what made Apple to think this way- Lion will turn on the internal one back on.
I don't care about all sorts of reasons why should I or shouldn't I desire to this. I just want it, because I have nice big monitor, which is apparently bigger than my Macbook Pro. Besides using double monitor will just exhaust my poor laptop. -mine is bit old-
I found ridicoulus answer from community, saying I should try fridge magnet. Sorry, but I don't want risk my whole computer, especially my HDD from getting magnetic damage. It happened so many times, -thanks my little bro- so now I am sick of magnet. I don't think Apple will cover this AKA magnetic damage anyway. -It wouldn't just damage, just erase your HDD-
So.... Any helpful insights? Thanks.

Nevermind. I found solution. Though it cost me 24 bucks.
Now Apple is seriously making me to consider to roll back to sucking Windows.
Thanks Jobs!

Didn't work in what way.  Are you unable to start it up?  Does it start but then freezes?  Does the screen stay black when you turn it on?
Try this - press the home and power buttons and keep pressing them until the apple logo appears.

• What happens if I switch off the "Use Cellular Data for Facetime"?

So I got a notice saying that my phone's storage was almost full which makes no sense to me because I barely have about 300 pictures on my phone, barely any apps, but I do have music. I have mail turned OFF, and I am always on WIFI. I don't know how this is a problem.
So what would happen if I pressed the switch off button for the "Use Cellular Data for: facetime"?
I use facetime A LOT with my friends WHILE ON WIFI but if this is causing my storage to go so full, I will do it.
Please heLP!

Using cellular data has nothing to do with the storage capacity on your phone. By turning it off you will only be able to FaceTime when your connected to wifi, thus saving you on your data plan if you do not have unlimited data from your carrier.
You can go to settings > usage to view what is filling up the capacity of your phone. You should import and back up your pictures to your computer following the directions here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083

• How to use External Drive for Users Directory

I just did a clean install on my Mac Mini - I have over 4 TB of storage attached, but the main drive (160 GB) keeps filling up. What is the best way to have the Users directory located on an external drive?
Thanks for your help,
Chris

Think about it for a second. What would happen if that external drive wasn't connected for some reason? Maybe it died the night before, as external drives have a habit of doing. How are you going to log into the system?
If the main drive is filling up, it says that you aren't making effective use of the attached storage. There's nothing saying you have to keep video files in the Movies folder, and music in the Music folder, etc. Find some things, that aren't your user profile, and move them to your external storage. Or consider putting in a larger internal drive.

• Internal HD upgrade or external HD for my Macbook Pro (Late 2008)

Hello,
I am finding the 250gb internal hard drive not enough and want to upgrade to a 500gb/1tb hard drive for my macbook pro (late 2008 edition).
What I am wondering is whether to change the internal hard drive OR buy the fastest possible external hard drive for my mac which I believe is one that works with firewire 800 as my late 2008 macbook pro does not come with USB 3.0.
The external hard drive I have found is £110 and my macbook would be using the Firewire 800 connection:
LaCie Rugged Triple 301984 1TB USB 3.0 and Firewire 800 5400 rpm Portable Hard Disk Drive
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rugged-Triple-301984-Firewire-Portable/dp/B005C2BNJI
I dont necessarily need the portability of a external hard drive. I work with large files (photoshop, illustrator files mainly) and would would be concerned that I would not be able to work directly on the hard drive for this type of work so an internal hard drive may be better/
Can anyone suggest a good, fast, cheap, popular internal hard drive compatible with my computer and whether you would suggest changing the internal HD or buying an external.
I am running Mavericks and the only other change I have made is by upgrading my RAM from 4gb to 8gb. Thanks so much for your help

For both convenience and speed, I'd recommend replacing the internal hard drive.  Your MacBook Pro can handle nearly any internal SATA 2.5" HD on the market, including 7200rpm models. For what it's worth, I'd recommend a Western Digital Black WD7500BPKX or similar or Hitachi HGST 7K1000 although in my experience Hitachi drives run hot and that's the reason I don't use them as internal drives.
FW800 is fine, but then you have an external hard drive to lug around plus the connection is considerably slower than the internal SATA connection used by the internal hard drive.
Note that you will have to either 1) clone your existing drive to the new drive or 2) completely reinstall OSX and all your apps from scratch to the new drive when you replace the internal drive.   If it were me, I'd take the opportunity to reinstall everything from scratch.
btw, I have done this myself on a number of 2008/2009 MacBook Pros and it's not hard at all.  iFixit has tutorials on how to do this.  (Here is a link to the one that I believe is your model.

• Can Front Row use external HDs for Movies?

Hey, I download and store podcasts, vidcasts, and movies on my external USB/firewire HD and I was wondering if Front Row could play them off of there. From what I've read, Front Row accesses movie files from ~/Movies but not elsewhere. Could I perhaps add an alias to the folder with my other movies to trick Front Row into playing them?

No no no...you don't need iTunes, but yes, you can do it. I just posted this in another thread so here it is again...this is how I do it. For short, I put an alias of the folder on the external drive (or just a separate partition on internal HD) into my Movies folder, and it works! Here you go, from http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1837976#1837976:
All you have to do is make an alias of the folder your videos are in and put it in your Movies folder in your Home folder. To do this, click and drag the folder on your external drive where your videos are stored. Hold down Command and Option, then drop the folder in your Movies folder, noting the little arrow indicating you are making an alias.
The same can be done with your iTunes setup if you're clever. Move your iTunes folder out of your Music folder in your Home folder and onto your external drive, then put all your music files inside the iTunes folder in iTunes Music. Then make an alias of your iTunes folder back into your Music folder in your Home folder. Aliases can also be made by selecting a file and choosing Make Alias from the File menu in the Finder.
I have used this setup for awhile, even over a network for a period. Works great. Good luck.
• Want to use external drive for new Mac, fresh iTunes

So I recently got a new Mac and have not transferred any music to it yet. In fact I haven't even launched iTunes. I want to store all of my music and play it from an external drive. I have found articles detailing how to transfer your library from your internal drive to an external one but I don't have an internal library of music on this machine. How do I set up iTunes to play from an external library for the first time? And how do I add my backed up music from my previous iTunes to that external drive's new music library? Do I just drag the files into the folder and hope iTunes will recognize them?
Thanks!

okay, i had to collect my thoughts for a moment
... but I don't have an internal library of music on this machine.
is *this machine* the new Mac ?
How do I set up iTunes to play from an external library for the first time?
the files will have to be added to iTunes. however, with the correct settings, they can be put straight on the external.
in order to set up iTunes on the new Mac, you will have to launch it. with the external drive mounted on your new Mac's desktop, go iTunes > preferences > advanced and point +iTunes media folder location+ to the external. this will cause iTunes to put all newly added content in that location.
also on the advanced tab, check +keep iTunes media folder organized+ and +copy files to ... when adding to library+.
And how do I add my backed up music from my previous iTunes to that external drive's new music library?
did you back up the music to disk ? if so, you should probably authorize iTunes with your iTMS account details, then just pop in the disk(s) and add the content to your library.
if you have backed up to an external HD, use the +add to library+ command from the file menu and navigate to the folder containing your media files.

• Use external drive for windows and mac

Hello,
I just bought a external 320Gb Western Digital Drive. I would like to use
the drive for windows and mac.I will not like to make partation on the drive
to use it on both operating systems. Is there any formating system with which i can use in both operating systems? I would like to use time machine feature on that drive also.
Thanx.

If you want to use a disk for both PC/Mac file storage and Time Machine, you will have to create two partitions. Partitioning is sort of like creating multiple virtual disks on the same physical disk. One partition should be formatted for PC (which the Mac can also use) and the other should be formatted for HFS+ (Mac only) which is what Time Machine requires. The Disk Utility application makes partitioning and formatting very easy.

• Tiger Archive and Install Using External Disk for Archive?

Any way to do an archive and install by moving the saved stuff to an external usb drive? My 10.4.3 install disk is offering me only erase and install, I was updated to 10.4.8 and quite invested with software, etc., would really like to at least try archive and install, but of course the main drive is too full for that.
As an alternative, is there any way to use single user mode command line to locate and move files before doing the erase and install?
Finally, I gather I cannot boot os 9 with my mini. Is there any workaround for that?
Thanks for any help.

> One of the unexplained mysteries to me is what users are supposed to do about iTunes libraries?
Create and maintain a backup saved to an external drive or media (used for backup purposes only) as should be done with all other data that is important to you - for this very reason and for other important reasons. It isn't a matter of if but when your hard drive has a partial or complete failure since none last forever.
Since an iPod can be accessed/used via Disk mode as with any other external drive, many use their iPod for backup purposes which is a big mistake IMO since this isn't what an iPod is designed for. There are ways to retrieve music from an iPod but if you have your iPod preferences to automatically launch iTunes and update with iTunes and/or don't have Disk mode enabled, it makes it much more difficult if not impossible.
Do you have access to another Mac that supports being connected to another Mac via Firewire Target Disk mode? If so, you can connect your Mini to another Mac this way to retrieve your data and then you should probably consider reformatting the drive (which completely erases the drive) and then re-install Tiger and all software.

• Using external drive for MacBook that was previously used for PC

I can't be the only person who'd had this issue...but I can't seem to find anything about this problem.
I have an external drive that I was using for my iTunes library on my PC. I recently upgraded to a MacBook. I was hoping to continue using my external drive for my iTunes library. When I plugged the external drive into the MacBook, it characteristically made my life very easy by quickly setting up itunes for me. It wasn't until the next day I realized that my entire library had been copied from the external drive onto the MacBook hard drive. This was not my intention.
It seems, however, that though my nifty new MacBook can easily read and use any files from my old external drive, it absolutely will not write to the external drive. In fact, even though I've repeatedly changed my iTunes settings to use the external drive for the iTunes library, it continues to write CD's onto the Macbook hard drive.
sigh
I'm very worried that:
1. I've now used 4 of my 5 "authorized" machines
2. I've used another move that I can make with the music I've purchased on iTunes and I will now have to use yet another move in order to make this right
3. I fear if I back up my music now, because of 1 & 2 I will lose my rights to some of my music.
If anyone has any help for any of these issues I would be very grateful! This is my first Apple in about 20 years, so be gentle!

i'm guessing this is a NTSF formatted drive. in order for your Mac to write to it, you need to install e.g. NTFS-3G
In fact, even though I've repeatedly changed my iTunes settings to use the external drive for the iTunes library, it continues to write CD's onto the Macbook hard drive.
above will probably take care of that
I'm very worried that:
1. I've now used 4 of my 5 "authorized" machines
you can deauthorize the PC if no longer in use. also, once you've reached the "5-computer" limit, you get the option (once per year) to *deauthorize all*, then reauthorize those in use. click here for information.
2. I've used another move that I can make with the music I've purchased on iTunes and I will now have to use yet another move in order to make this right
not sure what you mean by move.
3. I fear if I back up my music now, because of 1 & 2 I will lose my rights to some of my music.
no. you can transfer purchased content between authorized machines as much as you want. see _*iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between computers*_.

• Using external HD for backup with Macbook Pro

Hi. I've got a Macbook Pro 4.1 with a 300 GB primary HD running OS X v10.5.8. Am about to connect a 2.0 TB external drive in an OWC mercury Elite Pro enclosure via an eSATA controller card.
My partition scheme is as follows:
1st partition: 950 GB (for storage, etc.),
2nd partition: 600 GB (2X capacity of primary for TM backup),
3rd bootable partition: 450 GB (1.5X capacity of primary for Carbon Copy Cloner).
I know I can't boot the external through an eSATA connection, but in the event that I would need to boot up from the CCC partition, I would temporarily switch the connection on the drive to FireWire 800 for emergency boot up only and retain the eSATA connection which I understand is faster, for my normal day to day operations.
As I am currently restricted to using the one external HD, does the above sound like a reasonably workable and sound configuration?

Remember that whatever's on that 950 GB partition is not backed up.  Personally I don't like too many paritions but one thought would be to split it into two with one acting as a backup of the other.  This won't guard against mechanical failure of the drive but would help in a case of directory corruption or maybe a bad sector.

• Use external drive for Time Capsule backups AND file storage?

I have an external drive formatted by my MBP.  I'm using it to store my iTunes music library and iPhoto pics.  Can I use the drive for Time Capsule backups as well?

Yes, but that is not recommended. Storage and backup should be kept separate to reduce the chances of a disk failure. This is especially important because you cannot even partition a Time Capsule drive. Go get a separate drive for your storage needs. Get another drive for a second backup and use a different method of backup than Time Machine

• How to use external CSS for standard items ?

Hi,
I would like to use my external CSS style-sheet for the standard items I add to my portal page.
I build an UI template with a CSS-link to my css style-sheet, and I used this UI template for my portal page. But it seems that items cannot use this UI template CSS reference.
Is there a way to use external CSS on standard items (text, url,...) ?
Thanks for your help,
Best Regards,
JC.AUDARD

Easiest way I find to do it is to drop your css file in the portal/images folder. Make a hidden html portlet on your template and link to /images/mycss.css. You can then use it for many items such as text, links, html portlets, etc.
