What to do about an update for my G4 software and OS...

Some things haven't been running well on my G4 lately. At first, I thought it was because I had downgraded my internet but then realized that I hadn't updated the plug-ins in a while (Flash & Quicktime are "URGENT"). When attempting to update these, I found out that the newest versions require at least Snow Leopard. So I checked into upgrading the OS when I noticed that it requires an Intel processor and I have a Power PC. I'm not really sure where to go from here other than change out the processor or buy a new computer. I'm basically trying to get my G4 running as well as possible so any other ideas I can try to improve things would be great. Thanks for any info!

Hi burdo,
Lyssa is ever so right about the more recent versions of Flash. I have noticed the decline in video quality over the past few years. However, I have to say that the iBook G4 1.42 GHz is still a very good machine. I use it as one of my daily "around the house" computers. It runs Leopard nicely (Tiger is also a great OS). There are probably other reasons that your iBook is slowing down. Please excuse me if you are already quite aware of these tips.
A build up of temporary internet files in your browsers. If you're using Safari, you should reset it from the drop-down menu fairly often. You can uncheck the boxes for clearing your passwords and logins. If you use Firefox, got to preferences > Privacy > and from the drop down menu select "use a custom setting for history". then check the box to "clear history when Firefox closes" and if you click on "settings" to the right, you will again have the option to clear the cache and cookies but uncheck the boxes for your saved passwords, forms and logins if you'd like to save them. Another nice thing about Firefox is that you can install the add-on Ad Block Plus. This will remove all of the advertising banners and animations that take so long to load. After you install Ad Block make sure to add the recommended list to the subscription. It can hide behind the ad block page after you restart Firefox.
Stay current on your updates and don't ignore them. Check "software update" in system preferences. Things get wacky when your machine is behind on updates.
You should repair Disk Permissions at least once a month and after every update installation. You can find it inside the Utilities folder that lives in your Applications folder. Open Disk Utility, select your HD volume from the top of the list to the left (not the sub-volume) and click on "Repair Permissions". This can take quite a while in Leopard, but it runs through the permissions database in Tiger more quickly.
Files may also get misplaced in the hard drive directory. You can run a simple test with Disk Utility by Opening DU, select your volume to the left again and click "verify disk". If there is red ink in the report that indicates a repair is needed, you will have to boot from your install disk. After the opening page (languages) select Utilities from the drop down menu and select Disk Utility, only this time, after you select your volume, you'll be able to click on "repair disk".
The ultimate disk utility (my opinion) is DiskWarrior. Using DW to replace your existing directory with an optimal directory (and de-fragmenting your hard drive in the process) can really speed up your machine, especially after a long period (months, years) of using your OS.
I'm sorry for running off at the mouth like this but I hate to hear that someone's trusty iBook is slowing down and is believed to be obsolete. So far the G4 iBooks are still in the running and are very viable machines. You probably read somewhere, as I did, that the iBook G4 was recommended as the best deal in college computers due to it's low price compared to a new machine and its capable performance.
One parting thought.... Just make sure your RAM is maxed out. Minimal RAM is a scourge, especially if you're running Leopard.
Randy
Oh dear, one more thing.... The iBook G4 still runs current and secure versions of both Safari and Firefox.

    Hi,
i'm a new member of this community. I've recently learn about flashback malware and other threats to Mac devices. I've installed the new Mac OS X update for Lion 10.7, and the flashback removal tool. What about the update for Flash Player? Should i install it? Otherwise, should i permanently remove this app?
    I realy need some advice.
    Thank's to all.

Be sure to install the latest version of Safari (version 5.1.7) which is available via Software Update (in the Apple menu) if you have not already installed it. This update will automatically disable older versions of Flash when new versions are available, and will instruct you on how to install the latest version on your system. This should help keep your system safe from any vulnerabilities in Flash.
Note that this is only useful if you use Safari, though other browsers have their own update mechanisms you should research and enable or configure to your liking.

what do i do after downloading iOS 3.1 software and "There was a problem downloading iOS 3.1.1 software update for ipod touch. an unknown error occurred (8288). Please check that the connection to the network is active and try again." comes up?

Hello, I hope by now you have resolved the upgrade issue, but if not, here is what I ended up having to do:
“SUCCESS!!! I took my iPod to a friend who is a computer programmer/genius. He turned off his wireless, hooked the ethernet cable directly into his computer, and the download went through without a hitch. YAY!”
Here is my original post explaining what I had already tried:
    “Hi all,
I got an iPod Touch 1st gen for my youngest son for Christmas as a starter. It has the 2.1.2 ios on it, but after I paid for the upgrade to 3.1.1, I keep getting an error message (8288) saying there was a problem with the network connection. I have called customer service, and they suggested I try on a different computer, and if that didn't work, try connecting to a different network, and then trying the update. None of this has worked. It seems that tech support is clueless with this issue.
I have installed and unistalled iTunes 10.5, 10.3, 10.4, and now I am back with 10.5. I have tried looking up the issue from several search engines but no one seems to have a universal solution and I have tried several.
I really want to have this thing updated for himw hwne he opens it, but I am starting to worry that my purchase was a bust. I know this is the oldest version, but I don't want to buy a newer, more expensive iPod and him still not be mature enough to really take care of it. As I said, this one is a starter.
    Can anyone help? Please?!
    Thank you!!!
P.S. We have a PC, with Windows XP Home.”
Now, there seem to be a lot of different ways to solve the 8288 error, none of which are universal. Best of luck getting yours upgraded!

P.S. The post by Sparkhi is a link to his blog going into a long story about how he wanted Apple to pay him for “solving” the issue….the one that apparently has been solved by multiple solutions. I’m not trying to bash, it just bothers me that he put up this whole story and finally, at the very end of his blog post, posts his solution.

What to do about blurry pictures for iPhone 3gs?

Use "tap to focus" feature for the iPhone. Just tap and hold the area on the screen that you want focused. Since the 3GS is not as a good camera taker as newer iPhones, be sure to hold the phone very still. That should do the trick, just a little patience, and physical integrity

Ok I think it's a problem with my router. I went to my cousin's house and the Wi-Fi worked there perfectly. I was even able to download many apps. So I guess my router probably can't take in more connections. Oh well thanks anyway.

I purchased a used 2008 iMac. And although the previous owner said he deleted all of his information, his iCloud account is still the primary. I don't have a clue about what to do about it. I signed him out and logged in with my info, but still no go. Is there any way to eliminate his iCloud account and make mine the primary without rebooting it back to factory settings? There was an update, I believe, that I couldn't install because i didn't have his password that is what made me aware that his acct. was still active. I don't know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
    a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

I downloaded two cd's last night and I am un able to play some songs cause it tells me I am this computer is unauthorized to play some songs,I did what it said about going to store to get authorized and still will not work, not happy at all!  I NEED HELP OR MY MONEY BACK NOW!

There seems to be an occasional issue with downloads from the store. They prompt for authorization when they are in fact corrupt/incomplete in some fashion. Try deleting the problem tracks (do not hide from iTunes in the cloud), close iTunes and reopen, go to iTunes Store > Qucklinks > Purchased > Music > Not on this computer. Select a few tracks to download then click the icon that appears at the top-right of the iTunes window.. Untick the box that reads Allow simultaneous downloads. Proceed with the rest of your eligible purchases.
If you still have a problem use the Report a problem links in your account history to contact the iTunes Store support team.

I have downloaded an update for my ipod 4th, and after that all my songs, pictures and apps have been erased, Is there some way to recover all my information without have done a security copy?

I supsect you did the update on other than your syncing computer. If yu did the app, music and synced photo will not be on the iPod after the update since those items are not in the backup that iTunes makes. See:
iOS 5: Updating your device to iOS 5
The above applies to all updates performedvia USB on a computer. To get stuff back, restore from backup on the syncing computer.
The above in my educated guess since you provided litle information about how you did the update.
You can redownload many iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
