What to do about archived projects and events for upgrade

Like many, I created folders 'Events - Archived' and 'Projects - Archived' In whichI put many eents and archives no longer needed and why clog up space in fcpx's windows while working.
Before upgrading, do I need to now move those back into the FCP Events and FCP Projects folders or does the process see what they are and include them in the new libraries?
best,
elmer

In order for those to be updated, they need to be moved back to the "Final Cut Projects" and "Final Cut Events" folders. If you have lots of them, it is wiser to NOT do them all at once, as that would create a very big and unwieldy, inefficient library.
I suggest you follow Mark Spencer and Steve Martin's advice on this series of free videos that cover the new library model and the updating process:

  • IMovie - Archiving projects and events

    I use iMovie 11, 9.09 (1795)
    1.  I have some older projects and events that I moved onto external drives and now I have read that you loose stuff when you move them with finder and not in iMovie.  What do you loose and is there any way to recover them?
    2. I want to confirm that the right way to move them onto an external drive is to use command-drag within iMovie
    3. If the project in iMovie is at the top, and my drive is at the bottom off the screen, how do I drag it down to the drive off the screen?  It doesn't scroll down to it.
    Thanks!

  • IMovie 10: Lost all projects and events when upgrading

When I opened iMovie 10 the first time, it starting updating thumbnails. At some stage it got stuck on a certain event. After have seen the rainbow circle for a few hours and it was getting nowhere, I force quit the application. When I opened it the next time, both the 'events' folder and the 'project' folder are empty. I can see that all projects and events are still there in the finder folder, but I cannot import them into iMovie. Does anybody know what to do?

The events and projects from older versions have to be updated. You should a dialog about this when you first launch the application.  You can also update from the File menu.

  • What's the deal with notes and screenshots for upgraded app versions?

We uploaded a new version to replace our 1.1 version of an app in the store.
There was some confusion today that still persists:
    (1) For a while, the link to our current version app became invalid and we lost like 2/3rds of our normal sales until the link became valid again. Anybody else ever see that happen? Very frustrating.
    (2) Right now, there are two app versions inside itunes connect - the current selling one and the upgraded version awaiting review. I know the old one disappears when the new version is approved and goes on sale. But what is confusing is that the new screenshots and notes for the new version are also displaying in the current app version on sale in the store! I went ahead and added an explanatory note to potential downloaders... but is this a bug or something? Or is that the way it has always worked?
How do people here tend to handle the timing of new screenshots and descriptions when you add new features and want to show them off in your update app?
    Thanks,
    doug

This has been discussed a number of times here already.
The only items cached for an update release are the specific 'update/what's new in this version' notes.
All other changes will be updated immediately (within a few hours).
    You have 2 choices:
    1. Post the changes with a note (i.e. this is the next version, awaiting apple approval) so users aren't ticked by downloading the latest actual version.
    2. As soon as your update is officially released (monitor it) change the text and images.

  • Backing up/archiving projects and events in FCP X

I have been using FCP Studio since 2003 and have a great workflow and back up procedure but with FCP X I have to find new ways to do things.
Situation: My client will have me shoot many people asking the same questions. I love FCP X because metadata and keywords are much more powerful than logging was in FCP 7. So in FCP X I end up with an event and 12-14 projects. The client often will come back with changes many months later so I need to be prepared to modify an existing project or make a new one from the footage in the event that was never used in a previous projects.
Back Up: So I duplicated the event to a external drive because I need everything ready to go but need to free up space. Very easy.
Now the projects need to be duplicated to the external drive and this is where I am struggling.  I need back up each individual project because I can not select multible projects, which so different than FCP 7 where you could just send the project (which contained multilbe timelines) out as a ****.fcp file and put it with your original footage. The FCP X projects are duplicated projects only and it works just great but now only do I have to duplicate each project individually and they are not in nice folders. They are seperated folders by events and projects.
Not complaining, just reaching out to see if anyone has more knowledge than I do or has worked out a better solution.

Awesome. Thanks dredcomm. That will save tons of time.
I have already been doing that inside of FCP X but it should also be noted that FCP X does not let you duplicate a project folder.
Now I will just use the finder to copy the appropriate folder to an external drive.

  • Updating projects and events in 10.0.6

Has anyone had issues updating their projects and events for 10.0.6?  I have backed up mine, but I am holding off on updating anything as yet.  I updated FCPX before I was aware of the Apple warning about archiving 10.0.5 along with the files.

If you need to go back to the old Events, you just move the new Events to a new folder and drag the Event you want (most recent) out of each Old Versions folder.
I think the reason I have several Events in each Old Versions folder is because I have a great number of Events and the new FCP X crashed a couple of times while it was updating. Last time it updated, I moved most of the events out and it only had to update a few at a time.
I guess this time, FCP X created a new backup even though there was already one in there.
I'm not bothered though, everything seems to be working perfectly.

  • I tried to import a video into iMovie. Its says their is not enough space on the destination disk. I deleted many projects, and events. Nothing changed. What files do I delete and how?

I tried to import a video into iMovie. Its says their is not enough space on the destination disk. I deleted many projects, and events. Nothing changed. What files do I delete and how?

Hard drive full or near full:
You are going to have to delete, move or archive your data to regain hard drive space.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
You may have to Purchase an external FireWire or Thunderbolt hard drive to move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

Somehow it doesnt' see all the movies I have on iMovie 9 library.  What do I do?

I'm dealing with this same issue. At one point, it did recognize the Update function but then said it could not import the cache.mov and plist files which apparently means that imovie 10 can't see any of these past events. I can't figure it out.

  • HT5958 updated10.1.1 and just opened FC, potponed project & events updating (not realizing what that ment) and now can't seem to get back to that. The above thread say "choosing File Update Projects and Events" but I do not see that option in my menu ???

I updated Final Cut and I postponed updating Projects and Events (not understanding that this mean I would have nothing in FC when it opened!). Now I can''t find how to go back so i can update those. The help thread says to use "file > Update Projects and Events" but that opinion is not in my menu ????? I also restarted my laptop but that didn't give me the option either....

The easiest way to fix the hosts file is to restore it from a backup that predates the modification, or to copy the unmodified file from another Mac. If you can't do that, then do as below.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    open -e /etc/hosts
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Paste into a Terminal window by pressing command-V. A TextEdit window should open. At the top of the window, you should see this:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting.  Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1                              localhost
    255.255.255.255          broadcasthost
    ::1                                        localhost
Below that, you may see some other lines. The first 9 lines should be exactly as above, apart from differences in the blank space within lines. Otherwise you can't use this procedure—STOP and ask for guidance.
If the contents of the TextEdit window are as described, close it, then enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (by copy and paste):
    sudo sed -i~ '10,$d' /etc/hosts
You may be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Confirm. Quit Terminal.
If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.
That will fix the hosts file. There is now a copy of the old hosts file with the name "hosts~" in the same folder as "hosts". You can delete the copy if you wish. Don't delete the file named "hosts".

  • Moving projects and events from FCPX to server

Bear with me here...I'm a new FCPX user as far as file management is concerned.
I have several projects and events sitting at the root level of FCPX when I open it. It's completely bogging down my system (whether FCPX is open or not) and I understand I need to archive the projects I'm done with. I have access to a server that also houses all of my original footage so I'd like to archive my projects/events to there and delete them from my local hard drive so that my computer is lightning fast again.
When I go to File > Move Project the location pull-down menu only has one option: No Value and doesn't allow me to pick where to move the files to. Error Message reads: "You don't have permission to write files to the choosen destination."
When I go to File > Duplicate Project, I choose Project + Used Clips (I have all of my original and Pro-Res footage on the server already, no need to copy them again, right?) it creates a new "Clips for [project name here]" folder in the Final Cut Projects folder in my Movies folder on my hard drive. It seems like there's a lot less content in this "Clips for" folder than in the original and it makes me nervous, but I understand that since I'm only checking "Project + Used Clips" there is bound to be less content than ALL of the clips I originally had in my event when I was editing and wanted access to all of my footage.
    1. Is this all I need to drag onto the server? When I go to open the project in the future from the server will it have "broken links"?
    2. Can I then delete the original project folder from my hard drive?
    3. Do I need to check "Include Render files" when duplicating? What exactly does including these do for me in the future?
    4. If I drag this duplicated project do I need to drag the separate Events folder with it? Or was that taken care of with the duplicate function? A lot of my projects reference the same events so I'm afraid if I move one event folder for one project it will screw it up for another.
I've also read about "hiding" my FCP projects and events in different folders on my system and then they won't open when I open FCPX. Problem is, I don't want all that extra footage on my hard drive slowing down my computer when it's already on the server somewhere.
Hope this all makes sense and thank you in advance for your help!

    kkorgan wrote:
Thanks so much for responding! That all makes sense, and I was concerned about editing from the server directly because of bottlenecking, so I will continue to have my current project on my local drive and then move it later.
Can you clarify this for me:
"create a sparse disk image on the server, mount it"
Does that mean I create a "shortcut" on my desktop to the area in the server where it goes and then archive my projects to it?
One more question, when I hide my events/files as you show in your screenshot, isn't it still housing my footage on my local drive and therefore eating up space?
A  disk image is a special kind of file that you can double click and mount as if it were a hard disk.
The word "sparse" means that it will grow only as you add content to it. So you can create a sparse disk image with size, say, 50GB, but if you only add files that occupy 1GB, that's the space it will take on disk; it will grow as needed to accomodate more files (assuming the actual disk where the image resides has available space, of course). You create disk images in Disk Utility.
You probably have used disk images a lot without maybe realizing it. The dmg files that contain installers for many applications are disk images.
Regarding the hidden events: yes, if they are still on the drive they will still occupy space. If the matter is freeing space on the drive, this will not help; but if the matter is making FCP X work faster and use less memory, it will.
And you could just as well take the events and "hide" them in a different drive.

  • FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk

FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk.
I upgraded from an i5 to an i7 15" MBP and restored my files using my time machine backup. All seemed to go ok, except I had to use the migration assistant because on the initial boot the MAC didn't recognize the backup database on the USB device. MAybe this is a hint.
Since when I start FCPX it too cannot finnd the project or event directories.
Before my upgrade, I had a choice of files either on the Macintosh disk or the 2TB USB disk.
Now only files on the Macintosh are accessible to FCPX. The USB drive is visible under events and project but it finds no projects or events.
    Please help if you can.
    Thanks
    Barry

Thanks... alas no one has responded.
I think I have the structure that you are recommending.
I have a root level directory (Final Cut Events) with the files in them.
The puzzling thing is that it used to work before the migration!.
Anyway I'm going to move the contents to the root and see what happens.
    On a slightly different note...
I also posted a question about CPU utilization. Can I ask a question or two?
While rendering a short clip, I noticed burst of disk activity when the render started (likely loading the media files into ram since I have about 4Gigs available, then almost no activity while the render is happening, then more disk activity when its done.
However the cpu activity is not as high as I would have expected since rendering requires a lot of cpu.
What is your experience? I know some render is done by the GPU, but in my older i5 the CPU was about 100%, now in my i7 its about 50%.
Please look at the attached utilization for CPU and disk activity.
    Thanks for any thoughts... Barry

  • Disk appears twice in Project and Event window

There seems to be a bug in iMovie that causes the default disk to appear twice in the project and event viewer if you have a symbolic link in the path.
For years I have used a symlink to allow me to locate my Users area onto a second drive. This keeps all my user data separate from the more generic system data. Occasionally an application gets confused by this link and this seems to be the case with iMovie.
I think what is happening is that iMovie is trying to list my home directory which by default is usually on Macintosh HD/Users/louie but when it hits the symlink at /Users -> /Volumes/DataDisk/Users it sees this is actually on drive DataDisk. Then I think it looks for all mounted volumes and it finds DataDisk again and doesn't realize that this is already recorded and includes it again.
Other than this odity it seems to work just fine. If I add a project or event, initially it appears in only one of the DataDisk entries in iMovie. Then if I restart iMovie the new project and/or event will show under both entries. The actual project and events are correcty created in my ~/Movies directory.
    -louie

I don't know an easy way to fix that if you are using a symlink.
Click on this link for some good information about how to set up your home folder in a different location. You can set it up on OSX where you will not need a symlink. On the other hand, if its working well for you, may be best to leave it alone.

  • How to update older FCP X projects and Events in files attached to a AirPortExtreme USB connected drive?

    Hi
I have a one generation Air Port Extreme with a 250GB USB drive attached.
I copied some older FCP X projects and events to that drive as a backup.
FCP X 10.1.4 has now been released and these older files need to be updated.
However when I click on the update command in FCPX none of these older files are recognized (greyed out)
but there is a note about selecting "SAN" drives.
A little searching seemed to indicate that I need to declare this file a Network Attached File for this to work.
The basic question in this forum is can i set up the USB disk on my APEx as a NAS?
If not, what are your suggestions?
    Thanks
    Barry
PS apologies but I also posted this on the APEx support site.

You don't update projects and events, you update the volume that contains the projects and events, which must be stored in the correct location.
    Start here

and then go on to the other updates.

  • Project and Event Mgmt - Revisited

I started a discussion a few weeks ago about how to manage FCP x projects and events.
    That discussion is here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15630947#15630947
However, as I look more closely at my workflow as permitted by FCPx I have a quandary that I suspect others have as well.
Once I have created an event and a related project in the Events and Projects folder respectively, the question arises as what to do with those elements when you are done for the time being with both.
I have created a large number of projects, each with their own event.  As I move on from them, I would find it useful to have them not show up in the active Project and Event lists in FCP X.  But I do want to get back to them from time to time.
The wisdom seems to be to not move those project & event folders elsewhere with Finder, but to use FCP X Move Project instead.
    But here is the quandary.
If  you don't want to Move them to an external drive (and I would like to avoid that), the only other solution seems to be to move them to a sparseimage disk which can be mounted and dismounted whenever needed.  The problem with the sparseimage approach involves backing up with Time Machine.
My tests (and survey of the boards) indicate that whenver you add a file to the sparsebundle disk image, the entire sparsebundle is backed up to the Time Capsule drive.  That eats up TC storage in a hurry.
So, has anyone got any suggestions as to what to do with projects and events that you don't want to see on a current basis in the FCPx lists, but do want to get back to them from time to time.

    Rex,
As a freelance editor I'm always working on multiple projects and use this workflow to hide, show or backup projects and events.
As your aware while working on a project/event, these need to exists in the Final Cut Events folder and the Final Cut Projects folder.
In order to hide an event, simply move the event or events from the main Final Cut Events directory, back one level.
Example: I'm currently working on a productions where the events live on my Machintosh HD. First I create a folder called Final Cut Events HIDE.
Under your Home Directory/Movies/Final Cut Events/ move the event you'd like to hide to the Final Cut Event HIDE folder.
Be sure Final Cut Pro X has been quite.
When you re-open Final Cut Pro X, you should have a empty event library.
If you'd like to re-work on these events, simple quite Final Cut Pro X, drag and drop your "hidden" event or events back into the Final Cut Events folder, re-open FCP X, and there you have it.
Use this exact same approach for projects.
Regarding backup, you can manually backup your events/projects, however I only do this if the edit is completely finished and exists in my Final Cut Pro HIDE folders. All I then do is copy and paste to a backup HD.
    Hope that helps.

  • Moving project and events and continue to edit

I'm working on a MBP, I have the project and events on that computers drive. I'm fast running out of space and therefore I would like to move project and events to external HDD and continue to work on project from the same computer MBP. What is the best method to achieve this?
I know I can move the project and referenced events but will I be able to continue to work on the project unhindered.
    Thanks
    Jeff

One more question, if I move another project that uses the same events folder, how would I go about that? Do I choose just move project? Or do I again choose move with referenced events? Would that duplicate the events folder?
