What to do about bright spots before color correcting

I have a video of the Lion King show from the Animal Kingdom at Disney World. I shot it on HDV using a tripod, although I occasionally zoomed or panned the camera. This is not an important project, just one I would like to finally get done seeing as how I have had the footage since 2006. Procrastination is a bit of a problem for me as you might infer from that. The export might be my first Blu-Ray export, but more likely it will just end up on Vimeo.
The problem with spotlights is probably familiar to many of you so I thought I would ask for some advice before I even begin. My initial thought was to use a gradient matte over the top 1/3 or 1/2 of the frame at times to dim the spotlights before using an adustment layer to color correct each section. A vignette so to speak that would help focus attention on stage. Or, perhaps a large collection of little circular gradient mattes over each of the brighter spotlights (using AE)
I am not planning on zooming in to the video in Premiere Pro. The shots are the shots and they are staying that way as far as I can tell, unless something really screams for that and I can get away with it. There are quite a few changes in lighting. I attached three examples of what I will be dealing with.
What I would really like to know is how other people would go about this. I haven't researched Speedgrade yet, mainly because I think I might be able to handle this in Premiere Pro and After Effects. Although it may be the perfect opportunity to learn Speedgrade. I have a subscription to the Creative Cloud, so any Adobe product is fair game. I am not planning on buying any third party tools. This is just a hobby project, and I can not justify any additional expense for it.
I don't want to over do the correction. The yellow and blue tints are really there, but I would like to reduce the tint so that just the hint of yellow or blue is visible. I have a feeling that I am going to have to spend some time adjusting curves to deal with some of the dimmer lighting like the last image. Or, is there a set of magic parameters I can change to keep this simple and get close to my goal without a huge effort.
There will be no cutting other than what might be needed at points where colors change dramatically. I would really like to see everything keyframed so all changes are smooth if that makes sense technically. The video is 00;31;31;02 in duration. This is going to be a pretty big project for having zero cuts. The longest I have ever done without a cut as far as I can remember.
Here are three sample frames. Any and all suggestions are welcome. How would you start?

Oh, I know about the Disney issues. I just like to use my Roku to watch HD videos from Vimeo on my HDTV. It depends on the footage. If it has to be pristine, then Vimeo might not be the best choice, but for most of my footage, it is good enough. Most of the people I show my vacation videos to are friends and family so I just keep the video private and nobody bothers me about it. So far at least

  • Workflow KeyLight Before Color correction?

WHat is the best workflow when working in green screen.
Should the color removal (green screen). in Keylight  come before any color correction?
In this specific case I am dealing with a medium shot of a person. Talking head, not much movement.
I assume getting rid of the green screen should come first since then I am only am dealing with the remaining image (specifically the medium shot of the person.)  For example, I need to enhance the hue a bit on the person's face, and it seems to me that first getting rid of the green, making it alpha/transparent, first makes sense.
    Or does it?
    Thanks

Generally - yes, but you may find situations, where pre-key adjustments are unavoidable. The real question is, whether the green is green enough, if you get my meaning. There may be situations, where you need to compensate for insufficient lighting or color shifts from non-ideal lighting conditions (sunlight shifting colors, for instance). In those cases, you would try to clean up the green as much as you can without regard to the rest of the footage - as long as they facilitate generating a clean matte, nobody will mind. Once you have gnerated a proper Alpha, it is easy to introduce it into an untreated footage via matte modes and channel operations. That's the one thing you should keep in mind. In most cases of course you will want to do a direct key and if there is enough contrast, there should be no problems. Indeed you would then do the color correction after the key. This also applies to compressed footage like HDV or AVCHD - any pre-key corrections may in fact have an adverse effect and make things harder, as they also increase the intensity of artifacts. Anyway, all theory aside, you only know when you try. The more you do this stuff, the better wil lyou be able to gauge what's required.

  • Color correction

there was a thread on cs5 about this that interested me, so I started new thing here cause Im using cs3..
Shooternz, your help in the cs5 thread was great...and this is what I did....in my particular circumstances...
( I have to say that this is really the first time I'm sorta getting serious about CC and using the scopes etc...to try to learn this better )
I know the basics and the monitor stuff and the way people shoot properly exposed grayscale, color etc on set for calibration ( using film mostly in my experience, but done with digital too as I've seen )...
Sooo, here's the thing... I shot this clip as a test to see how long the music had to be to get a mssg across later on ( an insert shot that I will shoot on the day in the right location etc )... so this was a timing test sorta....didnt care about the lighting.
However, since I shot it I've tried to make it as good as I can ( why not ? )
I had a flourescent unit ( drop down ceiling 32K flourescents ) above...but it read about 36k on color meter and needed color correction at that ( LB and CC correction ..know what I mean ? )...so OK...who cares, its a test and timing only sooooo I dont put gels on the light and just shoot.
Soooo, I DID IN FACT put a grayscale down to fix it later if possible....even though it wasn't lit right....
This is what it looks like basically...
pretty terrible...very yellow and compressed tones etc...not good...
Soo, following your suggestions in thread in cs5, using waveform and vectorgraph, I come up with this instead..
    WAYY BETTER !  ( thank you ! )....but...not perfect...thats OK, I didnt light it right...but better ....
Now, though, when I paste attributes of this to the clip in question I end up with this pixelation or "splotchy " stuff..as shown here
Now, my experience using psd tells me that if you try to correct too much, there's a sorta " limit" to what you can do, and things start just plain getting screwed up..."splotchy" like this...  but if I had some way to just pick on the "yellow" gamma or something maybe I could get rid of it ....OR do a color replacement ( change ??? )... like pick out that particular color and change it to something closer to the white???  Have you ever dealt with this type thing ???  I know I started out all wrong to begin with but am wondering what you think ??
    Thanks !
    Rod
ps...this was a dumb test so please dont , you know, put much into this...I know I shot it all screwed up to begin with..

    Hey Rod
Your CC looks fine and if the intention was to correct the col temp and exposure issue..you did fine.  I see you have a full scale of tones in the greys.
Obviously you should start off with a correct  exposure  and that doesn ot necessarily mean a "technically correct" exposure.
You do not have to shoot and CC / grade to display the full range from Balck to white.
Its important to rember that the CC and grade (and the composition) are part of "the story"  At times you will want crushed blacks and other times you may want a high key look or compressed tones in the mid.  Then afetr the "tones" you think about what color tells the story.
    Always..... Levels before Color correction!
BTW - the eye rules but ensure technically that the scopes confirm what you think you see.
Heres someof my images reflecting different CC for a "fit with the story"
Flat , clean, compressed mid tones, clinical ( a green screen BTW)
Dark , compressed toward blacks with detail in mids, juicy highlightsdramatic ( slo mo)
Full tonal range,hi color, "summer on xmas day"
full range color and tone, texture "yummy"
Clean and clinical mid ranges with slight color de-saturation of BG
FG grade to match bg (key) and fit time of day look.
Keep in mind...the above shots started in the photography and the cc / grade is enhancement.
    Good luck mate.

  • Calibrating FCP for Color Correcting

I'm about to do some color correcting for a video project. The challenging thing is I don't have a TV monitor hooked up to my computer, which is preventing me from seeing what the exact color looks like.
Does anyone know a way I can callibrate my FCP's canvas window to show the same color a TV monitor would show?
    Thanks for your help.

TVs aren't used for this, as they vary greatly in every way...brightness, contrast, color...more. TV's aren't designed for broadcast color correction. You can try, but it won't be a true representation. Sorry to be a purist, but in this case, it is true.
    Try these articles:
    http://www.videouniversity.com/tvbars2.htm
    http://www.bluesky-web.com/colorbars.html
What is this for? If you are doing any sort of broadcast work, then you'd better get a broadcast monitor. Can't afford it? Aren't they paying you? Paying for your system?

  • Color Correcting MOV file

Hello,  I have a problem with importing FCP generated XML file into Adobe Premiere Pro, so I can later transfer it to Adobe After Effects for color correcting.  So I'm thinking to color correct a high quality MOV file that I can export from Final Cut.  Does that make any sense?  I'd like to keep highest quality possible for submitting my film to film festivals, DVD etc.
Would such a method adversely affect the quality of the image?  What would be the best way to color correct a file?
Also, as a side question, does Color Finesse come built-in into After Effects or one has to purchase it separately.  For someone, who is an amateur in color correcting does it make a big difference whether one color correct in After Effects or Color Finesse?
    Many thanks

If you export a losslessly encoded movie from Final Cut Pro, then you won't lose any quality by moving your movie back and forth as a QuickTime movie. People often use the Animation codec or the PNG codec in a QuickTime container for lossless encoding of movies for such transfers. The files are big, though, so don't expect to use such files for distribution or realtime playback.
Yes, Color Finesse is included with the full version of After Effects (not with the free trial version, though). See "Color correction and adjustment".

  • Color correction change across all clips?

I know how to make a color correction to my first clip, then I can copy and paste it onto all the other clips. However, what if I want to change the color correction later on? I have to delete all the color corrected clips, and then make a new correction and re-paste. Then if I want to do it all again, same hassle. This can be very bad when working with hundreds of clips on the timeline.
I wonder if I can set up a color correction profile and then send the clip to that profile. Then I can change the profile and each clip will follow that.
    Thanks,
    MrD

    Two observations...
    1.  You don't have to delete the clips to change the CC.  You simply modify settings in the effects panel.
    2. Provided that you want to apply the same CC to all the clips in (say) Timeline One - nest Timeline One inside Timeline Two and apply CC to it.  In this way you only have to apply one CC instance..

  • Needing to color correct a bunch of blue clips!

I recently did a shoot and the other shooter I hired gave me a bunch of blue video. What is the fastest way I can color correct those clips? I used a color corrector 3 way on those clips but it didn't really take the blue out. I then copied the settings from my camera (it was a 2 camera shoot) and then pasted the attributes to the problem clips and again I didn't see much of a difference with the blue being removed. Am I doing something wrong?

Using the 3-way there is a feature...white balance. There is an eyedropper next to the HIGHLIGHTS wheel. Use that to click on something in the image that is supposed to be white. The 3-way will then adjust the settings to make that white.
Same with the LOWS. Use that eyedropper to hit something that is supposed to be black.

  • Color correction help - step-by-step

I'd appreciate some help with a snippet from a video I posted on YouTube.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DFqIQPH_iU
This video was shot with three cameras. The wide shot has the most "correct colors". The video from that wide shot camera is what I want to use as my benchmark. I want to get the two "close up" cameras to match, as much as possible, the colors from the "wide shot" camera,
The two close up cameras have a little too much saturation in at least the red areas -- note the reds in the painted background. The close ups have a bit too much red, which is particularly noticeable in the painted background
So my question is what Adobe CS5 color correction tools should I use to give me the color correction I need.
For example, in what order should I use the various color correction tools? Or is there one tool I can use that will "fix" it all.
    Thanks

    shooternz wrote:
Its going to be a bit trial and error because thats the way it is in the CC workflow.
I agree its a bit of a saturation (red) issue which you already identified so deal with that.
Try LEVELS in the red channels (and most likely red gamma - which is the mids)
Shouldnt be too difficult because its not too bad as it is.
Maybe with LEVELS drop the RGB Gamma (or Black) to bring the BG down a bit on the refernce clip ( effectively saturating it a little more)
Tip: Set up a Reference Monitor with the reference clip.
    Hi
I am on another computer this morning without Premiere -- I assume a Reference Monitor is one I set up within Premiere -- not a physical external monitor.
I will try your suggestions -- BTW is an eyedropper included in Levels?   So I can do some color matching, or is that something completely different.

  • Does anyone know what to do about iCal colors changing.

Does anyone know what to do about iCal colors changing.   Ever since ios7 came out I have many problems.  I kind of feel like Apple has become Microsoft at twice the price??  Anyway, today all my calendars (iPhone, iPad, iCloud and on my Mac) all changed colors from the customer colors I had set.  I have about 5 calendars.
I was able to change them back on my Mac, my iphone and my ipad, but not in iCloud.   Once each of the ones I changed updates / syncs it reverts to the incorrect colors again.  I have tested back and forth, and it is definetly coming out of the iCloud.com.  The web site will not let me chance colors, so once it updates / sync, all my other devices and calendars sync to the purple in iCloud.
I could go on and on about my frustrations with the apparent lack to testing, and the irony around Microsoft and their "bugs".  It is more important that I find a cure, as this is really annoying.
Has anyone else seen this today

Don't spend a lot of time trying to change it. It's an iCloud problem that's happened before, and when it happened in August it went back to the correct colors in a few days. Just be careful when you add new items to the calendar to use the right calendar (even if the color is wrong), otherwise you'll have things out of synch when the correct colors come back.

    Hello USME,
'Tis a common problem on old Macs.
Do as Allan says: open the door and blow out all the dust bunnies. Canned air from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack can be handy (though sort of expensive) especially for blowing through the back of the power supply. A cool Mac is a happy Mac.
Be sure your Mac can breathe. The air intake is on the bottom of the case, so be sure a deep pile rug or too many papers on your desk are not blocking the air supply.
Feel the power supply and the processor with your hand. They should be warm but not hot; if you have to move your hand away, that's too hot!
Check the fan on the power supply, and on the processor if it has one. Take a flashlight and peer in the back of the (Mac) case through  the grille; make sure the fan is turning. If it's not, the power supply won't work for long.
Fans are not considered serviceable, though they will succumb to mechanics of determination. A CPU fan is easy and straightforward.
A fan replacement will not cure an already damaged power supply; the PS may already be done for. Used power supplies for a DA are hard to come by, and not especially cheap when found (c.$50). An entire  working DA or Quicksilver may often be found for under $100 on eBay, and swapping in your HD is easy and simple... this might be cheaper and more expeditious than repairing an expired DA. Replacing a power supply is fairly easy, but it's a nuisance and requires a 2mm Allen head wrench in addition to the usual #2 Phillips head screwdriver.
In my experience, power supplies and CPUs are about equally likely to fail. There are a few other possibilities, but they are not nearly so common.
    Good luck!... Jon
