Hi,
i'm a new member of this community. I've recently learn about flashback malware and other threats to Mac devices. I've installed the new Mac OS X update for Lion 10.7, and the flashback removal tool. What about the update for Flash Player? Should i install it? Otherwise, should i permanently remove this app?
I realy need some advice.
Thank's to all.Be sure to install the latest version of Safari (version 5.1.7) which is available via Software Update (in the Apple menu) if you have not already installed it. This update will automatically disable older versions of Flash when new versions are available, and will instruct you on how to install the latest version on your system. This should help keep your system safe from any vulnerabilities in Flash.
Note that this is only useful if you use Safari, though other browsers have their own update mechanisms you should research and enable or configure to your liking. -

HT5244 What does Flashback malware do once it is installed on my machine?
Hi, Just read HT5244 About Flashback malware, and I still don't know what it does once it installs on my machine. Anone know?
Thanks.
You can call me RayHi Ray,
Since it allows potentially malicious Java code to run on your computer, the possibilities are many. The most serious concern is a suspicion (though unverified) that Flashback and its variants could mine confidential information from your computer and upload it to whomever is collecting the data for whatever purpose it intends. A somewhat lesser but still significant concern is that it could simply cause random crashes, slowdowns, data loss and other annoyances.
To alleviate the first concern there is a tool called Little Snitch that alerts you to any outgoing network requests. It requires some knowledge of what requests are legitimate and what are suspicious, but allows you to block requests that you believe are malicious attempts to steal your information, or simple invasions of your computing privacy. It has been established that - in an attempt to conceal its existence - the malware you reference will not install itself on a computer running Little Snitch as well as a number of other third party utilities.
Little Snitch is not for everyone. If you were to use it to block all outgoing network requests, for instance, many normal and required functions would fail. -

Apple has released Java updates for Snow Leopard and Lion users:
Java for OS X Lion 2012-003; available only for users of Lion with Java installed.
Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8; available only for users of Snow Leopard.
Flashback malware removal tool; available only for users of Lion without Java installed.
Install whichever shows up in Software Update. It removes the malware (if present), updates Java (if present) and tightens up Java settings for the future. You may download from Apple's web site instead of using Software Update, but it's important to know which one to get, because the other two won't work for you.

What is known about Mac flashback trojan malware?
What is known about Mac flashback trojan malware?
LOL... Don't want to see this guy shirtless, anyway... Seriously, this Flashback thing is not to be taken lightly, and the first line of defense is the user's sense of precaution. Don't click on dubious weblinks, don't download (or if you do, don't open) dubious files, etc...
Now, this said, there's an ongoing criticism as to how quickly (or rather, slowly) Apple has been patching the vulnerabilities that could lead to an infection by such a malware. Some websites insist on the fact that if Apple let the third-party vendors (Oracle comes to mind where Java is concerned) patch their own software under Apple's supervision, such risks of infection would be next to nil, but that's another debate. -
I cant watch some videos on websites where i could usually watch videos before. This happened after i updated to MAC OS X 10.7.4 and a flashback malware removal tool 2 days ago. I have very little knowledge about computers so your help is very much needed n appreciated!
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only Guest login created by "Find My Mac."
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. -
I broke Safari trying to get rid of Flashback malware. How do I fix it?
I foolishly tried following the instructions on the CNET site for finding if I have the Flashback malware and supposedly fixing it:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57410096-263/how-to-remove-the-flashback-ma lware-from-os-x/?tag=mncol;txt
On the page, it says to run this command in Terminal and that if it returns a path result that you have the malware:
defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment
When I ran the above, it gave me the following:
"DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES" = "/Applications/safari.app/contents/resources/.PassmarkMonitorTestV.xsl"
Based on the instructions on the CNET site, I believed that this file was infected and I deleted it, even though it was a hidden file. I followed the rest of the instructions on the page as well, which would supposedly "reset" the infected application, but this didn't work.
I now can't run Safari, It would apear that the file deleted was necessary for it to run.
I tried downloading Safari from the apple.com website so that I can reinstall it, but when I ran the installer, it said I couldn't use it because there was a newer version already on my machine.
I'm running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I'm not sure what version of Safari I'm running (I can't open Safari) but it must be higher than the version on Apple's site, which is 5.1.4.

How can I repair my Safari installation?
<Edited By Host>If you’re certain you know when the infection happened, and you back up with Time Machine or something similar, you can save yourself a lot of time by restoring your whole system from the most recent snapshot taken before it was infected. Then take Steps 7, 8, and 10 below.
How can you tell when the infection took place? All you can be sure of is that you were infected some time before the problems started. You may have visited a blog that prompted you to install some kind of software, or a “certificate.” If you remember doing that recently, mention it in a reply, but don’t post a link.
If you don’t know when you were infected, there's no easy, reliable way to remove the malware, because it's constantly changing. There are differences of opinion on this site as to the best of course of action, so you should do your own research before deciding how to proceed.
I suggest you take the following steps:
1. Back up all data to at least two different devices, if you haven't already done so.
2. Boot from your recovery partition (if running Mac OS X 10.7 or later) or your installation disc (if running an earlier version of the Mac OS), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This action will destroy all data on the volume, so you must be sure of your backups.
3. Install the Mac OS.
4. Reboot and go through the initial setup process to create an account with the same name as your old one. Don’t import anything from your backups at this stage.
5. If running Mac OS X 10.6.x or earlier, run Software Update. You may have to run it more than once to fully update your system.
6. Restore the contents of the top-level subfolders of your home folder except “Library” from the most recent backup. The Library folder may contain components of the malware. It’s best not to restore anything from there. If you must do so, restore only files, not whole folders with all their contents, and only if (a) they’re visible in the Finder, and (b) you know what they are, and (c) they haven’t been altered. Don’t restore anything in the home subfolder Library/LaunchAgents, if it exists, or any hidden files or folders, no matter where they are.
7. If you’re running Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, launch Safari and select Safari ▹ Preferences… ▹ Security from the menu bar. Uncheck the box labeled Enable Java. Because of known bugs, Java in those OS versions is unsafe to use on the Internet. (Note: I’m not referring to JavaScript, which is unrelated to Java, despite the similar names.) If you’re running Mac OS 10.6.8 or later, you should still disable the Java web plugin unless you really need it. Few websites have legitimate Java content nowadays. If you encounter one that does, enable Java temporarily.
8. Change every Internet password you have, starting with banking passwords. Check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Take this step only after you’ve secured your system in the preceding steps, not before.
9. Reinstall your third-party software from fresh downloads or original media, not from backups which may be contaminated.
10. If you use any third-party web browsers, disable Java in their preferences. As with step 7, this step is mandatory if you’re running any version of Mac OS X older than 10.6. Otherwise it’s optional, but recommended. -

Not unless they're doing something new with it. If your OS is completely up-to-date, you need not worry about Flashback in any case. -
How can i tell if i have flashback malware
How can I tell if I have the flashback malware? Will installing the latest security update get rid of the malware /virus and protect my computer?
Here's what I am suggesting as a rudimentary test for some of the known strains of the flashback trojans. Open a terminal window and copy/paste each of the following lines hitting return after each one and note the results:
defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment
defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment
ls -la ~/Library/LaunchAgents
grep "/Users/$USER/\..*" ~/Library/LaunchAgents/*
For the two defaults command if you get anything other than a "does not exist" error message post the results since you are almost certainly infected.
The third command, ls, just lists the contents of your LaunchAgents, if any. That's additional info to be used in conjunction with the last grep command. If the grep shows any results then that too may indicate infection and again post its results. -
Hi, I believe I got Flashback Malware problem. I tried to open Google or Youtube in Safari and it kept giving me the warning "Please update your flashplayer", and I've checked in adobe's official website and ensure that I have the most recent flash player. I did not click "OK" or "Remind Me Later", I just quit Safari. I tried opening google in Safari again several times after that; sometimes the website wont open and gave me that same warning but sometimes the website showed me Adobe Flash Player sign and a link to update Flash Player PRO (which from my understanding after reading various discussions - it's a fake link leading to what's called flashback malware). Again, I never click OK to update it, I just immediately quit Safari.
I also understand from reading older discussions that Flashback Malware is believed to be an old problem that no longer exist, but here I am facing this issue and I can't find a way to get rid of it. I'm using OS Mavericks 10.9.2 and I always keep my software updated whenever any update is available. Can somebody please help me with a step-by-step troubleshooting on how to solve this problem? Thanks a lot! That malware will not affect your computer. You simply need to install Flash properly:

If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
The facts are:
1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
protection against malware.
5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware. -
Snow Leopard and the Flashback Malware
I am visiting my elderly mother and (like an idiot) responded to a prompt to update Adobe Flash last night. I have checked for the presence of DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES per C|Net's article on how to detect and remove the Flashback malware and it is not present in Mac OSX, Safari or Firefox. Can I relax? Do I still need to completely disable Flash in Preferences? She does not see well and is trained to automatically update via Software Update for Mac.
Also, her computer is running VERY slow. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot the speed?
Thanks in advance for any help! Happy Mother's Day!
