What to do about QuickTime question marks in Safari 2.0.4?

Hi everyone,
This may sound like a stupid question but it's beginning to bug me:
When I use Safari to browse the internet, I see question marks in lots of areas where there is supposed to be animated clips or images. The question marks are over the QuickTime symbol.
I'm using Safari 2.0.4
I'm using QT 7.1.3 and did not update because 7.1.5 had a bug in it that was interfearing with ffmpegX that I use to convert video and music containers.
- Is there any firmware that could get rid of the anoying Questions marks and let me see what I'm missing on webpages?
- Or do I need to update Safari?
FireFox on the other hand does not give me that problem.
Input is always appreciated.
Rio.

1) what does "com.apple.Safari.plist" do?
2) What is it for?
3) Why was it created?
a .plist file stores all of the user preferences for the associated application as well as information like what app to use for video, audio, viewing PDF files, etc. These files can easily become corrupted over time. Trashing them forces the application to create a fresh file.
4) What IS a Cache file?
5) What is IN a cache file?
6) Why does a computer NEED cache files?
7) What will happen when I find the mentioned cache files and delete them?
Cache files store information. The cache file for your web browser would store previously visited pages, images, downloaded files etc. This allows the application to reload pages (or files) faster since the data is stored locally and does not have to be retrived from a remote server. Again these files can become quite large and are prone to corruption. I have found it prudent to empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu, select "Empty Cache") every couple of days.
Re-installing apps from the DVD requires a program such as "Pacifist" to extract the program files. It's cumbersome and better if you can avoid it.

PS: You should reboot the computer after trashing .plist files. Since the file is already loaded into RAM, the new file will usually not be created until the next time the system loads.

I have tried several troubleshooting steps.
    -I reset cache.
    -I changed text encoding.
-I checked bos to always display images.
-I went to "develop" and opened in every other browser.
-I updated my adobe flash player.
    What else can I do?
    It is so annoying!

  • The quicktime question mark!!!

I was wondering if anyone can help me with this problem. I am trying to watch a trailer from apple.com. When the trailer screen opens it's white with a faded quicktime logo with a question mark on it in the middle. I know this has been asked a lot, but nothing posted has worked. I don't have firefox or mozilla so those suggestions didn't work. Someone said to delete the .plist file but I don't even know what that is! I have unchecked the flash media in the setting and that didn't work either. Please help me!!!!

i am experiencing exactly the same problem which has occured since the Quicktime Security update which was put out in the past few days. all flash type video from websites like www.nytimes.com are no longer working. i have tried the MIME solution suggested on Dec 22 but this has not solved the problem.

  • Question Mark in Safari, Quicktime , Movies don't play, Mime settings

I get a question mark in QT, using Safari, and latest updates, while trying to play movies. I notice the QT preferences will not stay when I close preferences, especially mime settings. I tried re-install, tried latest updates, throwing away preferences files in User/Library/preferences. What's wrong. You would think that QT would work, but QT only works in Opera.

    To Apple Discussions!
If you have no problems w/playing QT files while using Opera, then the problem could be w/Safari. You may wish to crosspost in the Safari Forums where the Safari users hang out so that they can see your issue & can possibly help you out. Sorry, I don't use that particular browser.
See if cleaning out the cache helps. That is the one thing I always here Safari users complain about.
    Check QT Preferences>Advance.
Make sure "Enable Flash" is unchecked (disabled)
As for the QT MIME Settings not sticking, see if repairing permissions from your Tiger DVD helps.

  • Safari Help - Quicktime Question Mark

Hey guys, I need help here. My Safari doesn't seem to be working 100% here. I have the Quicktime logo with a 'question mark' on top of it on some on the website I visit. I wonder what I need to do to fix that. Thank you.

Same thing happened to me. Finally figured it out. Install the latest Flash 9.
    Now do this...
    1. Go into System Preferences and choose Quicktime.
    2. Click on Advanced tab.
    3. Uncheck Enable Flash box
    4. Then, click on MIME Settings
    5. Click on triangle next to Miscellaneous - Miscellaneous File Formats
    6. Uncheck all boxes under and including Miscellaneous - Miscellaneous File Formats (you may only need to uncheck the Flash Media box, but I did them all and haven't noticed any other problems)

  • The eternal Quicktime Question Mark! Help?

    Hi,
I've installed and re-installed quicktime 7.0.3 (the latest for OSX) a few times now and am able to view a single file (ie a movie trailer) once only, and then all subsequent attempts to view media with Quicktime result in the dreaded question mark. The files I am attempting to view are from Apple movie trailers so I can't imagine they're corrupted. (Or are they?)
    Can anyone help me please?

Open the HD/Library/QuickTime folder and drag the QuickTime Plugin.webplugin to your desktop (so you can replace it).
Restart your browser for this change to take effect and try movie trailer again.

    Any support would be helpful

Did you also install a Quicktime update recently? One of the recent ones caused this to happen for some people.
Also check if it happens in a different user account. If it doesn't, it's probably something simpler to fix.

  • SWF files get the faded Quicktime Question Mark !!

I began to see that any swf art won webpages was not playing in Safari - It just shows a faded Quicktime Q with a question mark over it.
I suspected that these were a newer flash version 9 swf so I downloaded the Adobe Flash 9 player. But this did nort solve the issue, and any flash image - even earlier version just evoke the faded Q?. I suspected it was Safari, but
Microsoft's Internet Explorer does not play any flash swf either but Firefox does!! Is this a Quicktime plugin issue or an internet plug-in issue?
    any suggestions or support here?
Regards from a long term Mac evangelist.

  • Videos will not play in safari either quicktime question mark of nothing

    Hi everyone,
Initially I had an issue with Quicktime videos in Safari. - They would not play, all I got was a question mark infront of the video. Looking on these forums, appartently unchecking the misc. settings in MIME in QT preferences helps. Anoyingly I cannot actually uncheck those preferences, the mac won't let me. also, after reinstalling the flash update, and restarting etc, now all I get when I go to apple.com/trailers and try to play a video is the QT playback bar, but nothing else. It just stays there and does nothing. I am on broadband so speed is not an issue. how can I fix my issue? Thanks, Adam.

Hello to everyone! Sorry if I seem to be straying off topic. There are several related threads in this forum, the Safari 3 beta forum and also the Quicktime forum.
I have this problem as well - on my PowerBook G4, but not on my PowerMac G5... Specifically, in Safari on the Apple Special Event August 2007 page where we look for Steve to intro the new iMac, I see no button to push to display the stream. Just after the last word in the paragraph that the Play button should be under, there is a small active area that will bring up the stream on its web page (an invisible button), but when that happens, there is only the audio content. I have not tried the movie trailers, but these problems sound identical. So, this looks like several related symptoms - may be several problems or only one.
    Everything works normally in FireFox.
Moving the HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/QuickTime Plugin.webplugin file to the desktop fixes this problem in Safari, but induces several other problems.
I have MacOSX 10.4.10 up to date, Quicktime 7.2.0, Safari 2.0.4 (419.3). DIVX web player 1.3.1 (p/o 6.6 package), Flash 9.0.47, etc... I have upgraded from many, many versions of Mac-OSX to the present.
I recently installed i-Life '08 on both computers.
I repaired permissions and sucecssfully verified my disk - no impact regarding this problem.
I reinstalled Quicktime - no resolution.
I am a knowledgable user - not expert, but quite knowledgable - I suspect that there is an internet plug-in conflict. Someone elsewhere in the discussion forum (Quicktime area, I think) also ventured that guess.
Here are my internet plug-ins for the problem PowerBook G4:
    QuickTime Plugin.webplugin
    Quartz Composer.webplugin
    JavaPluginCocoa.bundle
    Java Applet.plugin
    RealPlayer Plugin.plugin
    npUpload.xpt
    iPhotoPhotocast.plugin
    VerifiedDownloadPlugin.plugin
    npdivx.xpt
    Windows Media Plugin
    Disabled Plug-Ins
    AdobePDFViewer.plugin
    flashplayer.xpt
    Flash Player.plugin
    QuickTime Plugin.plugin
    Java Applet Plugin Enabler
    ContentUploaderPlugin.plugin
    nsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt
    DivXBrowserPlugin.plugin
    NP-PPC-Dir-Shockwave
    DRM Plugin.bundle
Don't know why the order is like it is - I displayed my directory, selected all and copied and pasted to get this list - sorting by date or name didn't alter the order of this list (hmmm - something to ponder on a dull day!).
I will post the plug-in list for my desktop that works correctly on Tuesday when I am back at the office.
That is all I know on this issue. Hope someone sees something useful here to help get to the bottom of this.
    Brian

  • Question Marks In Safari

After I updated to 10.4.11 for PowerPC I get these question marks with the Quick Time Logo on some websites. I went into preferences & Enable Plug-In, Enable Java, and Enable Javascript is selected.

Quicktime with a ? refers to Flash video.
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, QT 7.3 and OS 10.4.11.
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.9 or above (this has not yet been verified with Leopard) and have Quicktime 7.2 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
    RealPlayer 10 for Mac from http://forms.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html?platform2=Mac%20OS%20X&product= RealPlayer%2010&proc=g3&lang=&show_list=0&src=macjack
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
    Adobe FlashPlayer from http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.)
In Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them).
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them).
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
The world should now be your oyster!
You should also have the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
