What to do about the Catalyst unsupported Radeon X600?

So I have an older Radeon X600 PCIe card I'm using in a server right now, and unfortunately it appears there is no Catalyst support from ATI.
I need this card to support 3D acceleration because I need 3D acceleration in VirtualBox, which I run headless from the server. I tried using the open source drivers, but they don't appear to allow me to enable 3D acceleration in virtualbox (or even 2D acceleration).
Does anyone know of a way I could get 2D/3D acceleration working on this card? Would I need to drop back to a much older version of Catalyst (this card has been unsupported for a couple of years now)? Or do I simply have the open source stuff configured incorrectly?

Hi,
It is good to read that you have got it working. I dropped in here to give some information.
My older system had this card (X600 SE), and it worked perfectly with xf86-video-ati driver, with full 3D acceleration. This was using the one provided in the default Arch Linux repositories.
xf86-video-ati also works well for many RadeonHD cards (for example, my HD5670).
As for AMD's binary drivers,
AMD dropped support for this card in their FGLRX/Catalyst drivers some years ago. There is a legacy driver, but it will require an older version of Xorg.

I am not sure what could have changed in xf86-video-ati that drops support, natively, for this card. Perhaps it was removed and added to an alternative driver (xf86-video-radeon?).
I still have within my vicinity the card in question, but the machine that it is in, I gave to my family for shared use. That machine is currently running Windows XP, their favourite operating system (thus, I cannot test it to find out more).

A few questions about the Catalyst driver...

I was wondering a few things about the Catalyst (fglrx) driver.
1. Is it really that big of a performance difference between the os drivers?
2. Does it crash a lot (is it known to?)
3. I tried to install, and it says it conflicts with libgl. libgl has a bunch of other stuff that depends on it. How can I get around that?
Thats it. I'll look around some more and see if I can find anything on my own.

i wanted a cheap and a power saving card, but with common 3d features.
if you have a pcie slot i'd really recommend the nvidia 7600 GS (note _not GT_) without active cooling (fan).
though you need some good case cooling while playing/load.
it consumes about 10W (idle) to 35W (heavy load) and is powerful enough to play doom3, halflife2 or nexuiz in high resolution.
but even if you don't play (actually i started playing some old games again when i bought this card), it's the least power-consuming nvidia card i found.

it's a pity with amd/ati graphics chips. the HW is good, the boards with the HD3200 chipsets are great, but the support/drivers are so miserable that it is mostly impossible for users to use them!
the OS drivers are good, but what's the sense of buying a 3d-card/chipset if the drivers do not support this feature.

What is different about the new Airport Extreme?

I've been waiting for a refresh of the Airport line before I buy a new one; I can't tell if the new one is available or not. What is different about the Airport Extreme that the FCC listed in June 2011 from the October 2009 model? I currently have the UFO-shaped Airport from 2003 and it doesn't have enough ports on the back, so it's time to upgrade.
So... what's different? Is it out yet?

We don't have any official announcement or specifications from Apple regarding this so called June 2011 model. At any given time there are dozens of rumors floating around on the Internet regarding new products.
The terms of use agreement of the forum.....which we all agreed to.....do not permit us to discuss a product that has not been officially announced from Apple.
When/if that occurs, and Apple has provided us some specifications to look at.....we can talk about the "new" product.

What's different about the CC version?

I'm getting completely confused about the CC version. Is it still possible to work on a standalone machine (i.e. not connected to the internet) or does one have to be connected to the internet to do any work? My problem is that I do a lot of work while traveling in trains, planes, etc.. and if I need to be connected then, that's it - I can't upgrade to the new range of Adobe design suite, which would be a shame!! Any help would be appreciated.

No disrespect intended but you must have been in hiding for the past year and especially since June.
Adobe have dropped the CS products with CS6 being the last, they have promised some bug fixes but users are not holding their breath waiting. The great thing about the CS range has been that they have perpetual licenses, that is pay once and use forever.
The CC is a subscription based "service" where users pay a monthly fee, users need to log in once per month to validate the license to ensure the software continues to work. Cease subscribing and the software stops working.
Please do not start a rant, that has been done to death, the situation is what Adobe have given users, take it or leave it.
As you appear to be a CS user do the math and you will see that the CC is way the heck more expensive than the previous upgrade route.
Many CS users are actively looking or have moved to other manufacturers.
In my view the CC subscribers have thieir heads stuck so far up their own cloud that the sun is shining. Meekly submitting to Adobe, if we all stood firm and said no give us CS7 they would soon have to change their working practice
If your CS is not broke, take my advice and do not fix it.

One week ago i posted a negative opic in this forum about the service of apple. My topic was cleared after a few minutes. I posted the same text again and they wrote me a email that i agreed the rules of the forum. I should sent my letter to a emailadress they gave me. Now i am waiting for one week and nobody answered. But for me its natural. When i sent my Ipod to apple nobody red my letter and so my ipod wasnt repaired. I sent my Ipod 3 times to allple and its still broken...
These are my experiences with the apple service. What are yourones?

Be only technical here, that's all, no offense.
About service:
I feel your pain, the "cannot recommend Apple anymore" feeling,
BUT,
remember it is the same everywhere, and I think even worse elsewhere.
When you have a problem, do not take it from the argument side: this won't work.
If you call, pretend there are only unimportant mistakes, and people are so great nevertheless etc etc,
then
you get what you want very easily, replacements etc.
Apple still the best!
(if not as good as it used to be)

I tell you there is something about the number 3 that causes havoc with computer systems. Seems we should just skip over it and move on to Aperture 4... someone call me when it is ready.

What has changed about the glass edge around FF4 in Win7?

I generally don't have my FF4 (RC1) window maximized so I see the glass trim around the FF window. However, I've noticed that Microsoft tweaks that glass trim by having a lighter shade on towards the top of the sides and a darker shade on the lower part of the sides. That doesn't appear to change on anything that has the glass trim....except as of right now on FF4, it does. The darker shade will move up or move down. I can't tell what triggers it but, the same behavior in other browers does NOT re-produce the problem.
I hope this is clear to understand, lol. Any input would be appreciated.

The aero trim moves when a status message or URL is shown on mouse over in the tooltip style box on the bottom left of the Firefox window. There is a bug report concerning this.
