What to do? Advice needed-sell MBP 2.2 and get 2.4? Boot-Camp?

My question, should I sell mine 2.2, LED, August 07 and buy a new 2.4? Worth it?
The catch is, Logic works better in Tiger from what I've read. I could get about $1530 or so, then a new one for a bit more (friend discount), so wonder if its worth it?
The overall goal, which eliminates using TIGER, is that I have many many plug ins for windows/nuendo VST instruments ranging from EWQLSO to FX Xtreme to Drum Modules. (not to mention a great set up for Nuendo). That said, I would have to get an external HD then use boot-camp to boot up to external and then add all my programs there. So what would you do? For about the same price, bigger HD, double GPU, and .2 faster. Worth it? Or since I have a "ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. Have talked to some apple folk and they are aware of some problems. But then I can't use boot camp unless I upgrade the OS. Which I can do.
Some argue TI was an issue, seems to be back on newer MBP, however, others say it could be PCI-E which I think they changed in OCT. As some experience problems with TI firewire anyway. I've never had any problems with mine.
Just not sure what to do. I could always downgrade to TIGER, but then, no WINDOWS machines for high end ORCHESTRAL and SOUND DESIGN PLUG INS, so if I want those, then why not get a glossy, newer mac that might run a bit cooler?
Advice appreciated.
Very, VERY unclear on what to do.
Thanks, love Apple, just not sure what to do about this - people want to buy my machine.

You've got a lot of good questions in there, but I want to address one of them. First of all, if you can find the beta version of bootcamp somewhere, you can use it with Tiger. It's too bad they've taken that download away, but I'm sure it's out there somewhere.
If it were me I'd stay on Tiger and get a copy of Parallels or Fusion. I use Fusion and it works really well, although not for music, and I don't have to boot my machine in Windows to use Windows programs. Each will run you less than 100 bucks.
There may be other reasons you want a new machine, and that's understandable. But regardless, I don't think the performance hit you'd take by moving to Leopard is worth being able to use Nuendo and your other plugs in Bootcamp. Whether you get the new machine or not, I think Tiger plus either Parallels or Fusion is the way to go.

  • What drivers do I need to reinstall different OS and where can I download them for ThinkPads T61?

I just accidentally purchased one ThinkPads T61 with Linux OS version.  I don't use Linux so I plan to wipe out Linux and install Windows XP Pro instead.  I have the Windows OS, but as I know I will need to install some drivers afterward to make the notebook work properly.
My question would be: How many and what drivers do I need to reinstall different OS and where can I download them?

  • Advice needed on monitor for Photoshop and Lightroom use

Hi. I am aserious amature photographer wishing to move to the next level and sell some of my work.
I just had a custom pc built to work with the new copies of Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3 I bought (lots or RAM and HD space, ssd, etc....)
The last piece of my system is to purchase a monitor. I want to be somewhere in the better then Best Buy but less than NEC/Eizo range in price, or between $500 - $900. I have worked with cameras since the early 80's and moved to digital several years ago but the only post processing I have done is with Photoshop Elements.  I would be doing mostly prints to sell but also need to have a web site to do so. Will also use the pc for daily net surfing... but do not game or watch a lot of video on the pc.
Being really new to this whole process I have a few questions.
The first thing I need to decide is whether I need to look for a wide gamut display or not.
I realize the whole chain must be 10 bit (Adobe -OS - graphics driver - graphics card - display port.
I have Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3, Win7 64 bit, Zotac ZT 50701 10M video card (which uses GeForce GTX 560  fermi and an nvidia chipset. It does have displayport). I am having a hard time determining whether my video card actually supports wide gamut (10bit).
Standard vs Wide Gamut? Is wide gamut important enough to deal with the issues it brings (calibration, viewing things other than PS and LR or color managed, which appear to be rare?) Is sRGB good enough for most prints (don't do fine art, mostly nature and portraits but starting to do some HRD things). If wide gamut is the way to go I have no problem with that and have the time to learn about calibration, color management, etc... But I also want to make sure the juice is worth the squeeze.
24" vs 27"? Is there any advantage to one or the other when editing photos?
IPS vs PLS? I realize they are similar but are there differences worth noting?
Glossy vs Matte Anti-Glare? seems to be a lot of comments regarding the anti-glare coating, mostly poor. Yet I can see issues using a glossy screen in my study with a window to my back.
One manufacturer vs another? I realize Eizo, NEC and LaCie are at the top of the heap. But with my budget, after upgrading my pc and camera equipment, I can't make that work now. So I need to choose from the next group down (Dell, HP, Samsung, Asus...)
One or two monitors? It looks like many (mid-grade) wide gamut monitors do a lousy job of displaying anything but color managed sites. Is that necessarily true of all the mid-grades? Or can some be used for graphics but as well for routine net surfing, MS Office, etc...? Or am I better off getting two monitors, one for graphics and one for the rest? That would pretty much limit me to 24" or less given my budget (used to using a Dell 21" TN monitor that oddly crapped out just as my new pc was done).
The more I read reviews the more confusing it gets. There seems to be a difference of opinion even among pros on whether to go wide gamut or stick with an easier sRGB. Realizing a standard gamut monitor would be cheaper, I do want to make the right decision up front, given my budget.
The one thing I have found astounding is that there is nowhere to actually see many of the monitors I am considering. We live in Nashville TN but my wife is from Atlanta Ga so we drove there a few weeks ago to visit family and for me to visit monitor shops. Even the largest ones there (Fry's and Microcenter) had minimal IPS monitors, a few Dells and HP's. The knowledge of their sales folks was so poor I finally gave up. Felt bad about this until I posted this on another board and got a reply from a guy in LA (second largest city in the US) that he wanted to see a particular monitor and there was no place even there to do so.
Anyhow, here is what I have considered:
24" Wide Gamut: Dell U2410 and Asus PA246Q. Dells appear to be good IF you get a good one. The Asus appears to be a clone of the Dell that gets a lot of good press.
27" Wide Gamut: Dell U2711 that also gets a ton of good reviews
24: Standard Gamut: Dell U2412 and HP ZR2440.
27" Standard Gamut: Samsung S27A850D and Apple Cinema- The Samsung uses PLS technology versus IPS while the Apple is a glossy screen that will work with a pc.
Sorry for the long post. Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Not trying to talk you out of setting up a 10 bit pipeline, but it's still not very mature, and it really isn't a necessity to get a good editing experience.
Personally I find advantage in using two 4:3 ratio monitors for Photoshop work.  All my panels are on the right monitor, while pretty much the entire left one shows the Photoshop main window and the working canvas space.  My desktop is 3200 x 1200 pixels overall, and I find having the panels remain visible all the time is important.
Regarding whether a wide gamut is important...  Will you be printing to devices that deliver a wide gamut?  What other things will you be doing with your system?
It's not a no-brainer whether a wider gamut monitor is always "better" for everything, since it can accentuate the differences between the output from color-managed and non-color-managed applications, and it's definitely true that not everything is color-managed.  With a monitor that's close to sRGB, for example, you might find Internet Explorer output acceptable, while using a wide gamut monitor will result in garishly oversaturated IE displays.  On the other hand, FireFox (with a settings tweak) seems to get color management right, so there is an alternative.
I think, as John has implied above, you should work to get your head completely around how color-management works, soup to nuts.  If you don't, there will always be things that are a mystery or which surprise you at the wrong times.  Being able to order a print and have it come back with the expected color can be very important, as you might imagine.

  • What specs. do I need to look at to not get chirping sounds at the end of a sound fi

Hi all,?I am trying to run an experiment for a doctoral project and I need some help. I have a really expensi've sound card called the lynx one that I have no problems with. Recently my school purchased the soundblaster x-fi extreme audio sound card because we are testing to see if we can use a cheaper sound card and get the same results. However, at the end of certain sound files, we get a chirping sound from the soundblaster which is the end of the clip being cut off. It is like the release time of the file or something, but we can't mess with the cli
    ps.
Also it doesn't do that for the lynx one so we know that some sound cards will not allow you to hear the cut off. Any advice on what specifications to look at etc to not hear the chirping sound but still getting a sound card that isn't 500 dollars? Thanks!

  • What does my Mac need to run Access 2003 and SAM training CD

I'm enrolled in an intro database class using Microsoft Office Access 2003 and SAM 2003 Assessment and Training CD. Both require a PC, but I have Mac Book Pro 2. Would someone please explain to a PC dummy what my Mac would need to run these two applications or if I need to (gulp) purchase a PC. Mostly likely I'll be taking additional classes in the future. Thank you.

    Welcome to the Apple Forums.
You will need the following to Run MS Access and SAM 2003:
    1. An Intel Mac (You already have this)
    2. Leopard Operating System (You have Tiger), which contains boot camp to install Windows
    3. Windows XP or Windows Vista installation Disk (Please read the Boot Camp instructions/Guide)
    4. Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007 for Windows (which has MS Access)

  • How do I install Lion on an MBP with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Boot Camp'd XP and a Master Boot Record?

I think this is called "a pickle."
The machine is a 13" MacBook Pro, 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo w/ 4 GB RAM and a 500 GB HDD.
The HDD has a Snow Leopard 10.6.8 partition, and a Windows XP partition, via Boot Camp.  Its Partition Map Scheme, sadly, is a Master Boot Record. I need to reformat it to a GUID Partition Table scheme to install Lion, but when I attempt to boot it from the Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD to wipe the drive, it grey-screens.  Dead end.
From what I can gather on the forums, I can't boot a 10.6.8 machine using a Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD.  I can't find my grey DVDs for this machine – still looking for those – but I expect those won't work either, being Leopard-generation?
The machine works fine, for the most part, including the optical drive.  Has occassional display and wake glitches.  Its HDD is backed up on a Drobo via Time Machine.  I also have a 15" MBP Core i7 (with the exact same problem: 10.6.8, XP, MBR) which I can use for Target Disk Mode via FireWire.  If I try to wipe the HDD on the 13", using Disk Utility on the 15" via Target Disk Mode, will the 13" then boot successfully from the Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD?
I just want to wipe the 13" machine, reinstall a fresh copy of Snow Leopard, then update it to Lion and restore from Time Machine, and never touch anything Windows-related ever again. (And then do the same for my 15", for which I've found my 10.6.3 grey disc. Not sure if that's any more promising.)
    Any help appreciated!

Sounds like something is wrong with your disk. Have you tried cleaning it?
The Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD is fine – it mounts on both my 13" and 15", and I successfully created an image of it on my 15".  I also tried my wife's Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD, also clean, which produced the same grey screen result.
Have you tried to use boot camp to erase the Windows partition?
Yep, this is supposed to be the proper way to remove a Windows XP partition from Boot Camp, so this was the first thing I tried.  I get the same error as everyone with a Master Boot Record scheme appears to get:
The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) volume.  Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again.
So, if I can't launch the Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard DVD, my next best guess is wiping it from my 15" over Target Disk Mode.  However, if I try that, and still can't get it to boot from the Snow Leopard 10.6.0 DVD, then I'm stuck with an MBP without an OS.
My conclusion – that 10.6.0 DVDs can't boot to 10.6.8 machines – was based on forum posts about downgrading from Lion.  I was wondering if there's a way to create a "10.6.8 restore DVD," and try booting from that.  Shot in the dark perhaps.

  • Hey I need to expand my RAM and get another HDD.

I am an avid Final Cut Studio user, and I have about $500 - $600 to blow on some upgrades, but I need to know how much and what exactly I need to buy. I want to run Final Cut Pro and Motion efficiently with little slow-downs, so I understand that I need more RAM and another HDD so streaming media won't be bottlenecked on one drive.
    Thanks.

"I am an avid Final Cut Studio user..."
    Heh. No pun intended?
I would go with the Crucial RAM (which seems like you already have). I have had great experience with them and just stuck in 2 1GB sticks myself into my G5.
Go with a Seagate hard drive. They really make the most reliable, fastest drives out there, esp. with a 5 year warranty. Look at www.newegg.com for the best deals on hard drives. The 300 GB is wicked cheap at $130; the 400 GB model is probably somewhere around $250. Note that the 500GB is SATA II and the others are regular SATA 150--I dont believe the SATA II is compatible with the G5 yet.
Keep your primary HD as a boot drive... Apps and perhaps user data, iTunes music, iPhotos. The second drive should be your media drive used as a scratch disc, capture scratch, etc... as well as a place to store all your projects and media.
