What to do after archive and clean install
I had to re-install 10.3 on my G5 after the hard drive icon icon disappeared from my desktop and the finder froze. Its back to normal now after I did a clean install of 10.3, choosing the archive and install option. What should be my next step? How do I get all my stuff in the 'previous system' folder (my music, photos, etc.) to the main account? Can I somehow log in my old account with all my stuff and delete the new one I had to make? What's the easiest way to do this?

All USB drives disconnect after upgrade and clean install of MAC OS X Mavericks
I first upgraded to Mavericks and noticed that my external USB dries would disconnect after MBP Retina Mid 2012 model was updated to Mavericks. These worked fine in all versions of Mac OS X before upgrade. So I did a clean install figured my machine would benifit from this anyway. This did NOT fix the problem.
Wouldn't be much of an issue but I use this macine as a media server with Plex and all the media is in one of the external USB 3.0 drives. All drives are from Seagate, and have found no info there. Guessing this is a bug that Apple needs to fix unless its a Seagate issue which I doubt.
My TEMP FIX while my machine is plugged in to the power adapter and drives.
SETTINGS - ENERGY SAVER - Power Adapter - Computer Sleep set to NEVERIf the tracks are recognized by your iPod (playable), search VersionTracker for "iPod". You'll find a number of utilities that can transfer your tracks and your playlists from your iPod back to your Mac.
If they're just on your iPod as data, then I'm not certain since I don't use a custom hierarchy, but you should be able to copy the folder back to your iTunes Music folder, turn off the "copy to iTunes library when adding to library" preference, and then use the Add To LIbrary command to get them recognized by iTunes. Again, though, I don't use a custom hierarchy, so you might want to ask that question as a new post, just to get additional opinions.
BTW, an iPod is not a reliable backup for your tracks. Too many situations can arise that would cause your iPod to need to be erased. I strongly recommend that you make backups, particularly of any tracks purchased from the iTunes Music Store or that would otherwise be difficult to replace, to CD, DVD, external hard drive, or other medium. -
BIG problems with setup after Archive and Install
It all began when I was preparing a G3 iMac to be used - as a trial - by a Windows user. I wanted to preserve the existing accounts so created a new user. I then forgot the new user password (didn't write it down, did I) and had already set it up to go straight to the login screen on boot. Do you think I could then remember the user name of the original account(this time I knew the password)? I researched and was able to set up a new password for the System Administrator via the Install Disk, and hoped that it would show me the existing user names - it didn't. Despite my best efforts, I was still unable to login. By this stage, the gremlins were really getting to me.
I then decided to do an Archive and Clean Install - after I had repaired disk permissions, disk etc. So far so good, as everything seemed to go OK and the Mac restarted and presented the Welcome screen and I proceeded with setup, like it was a brand new Mac.
After going through the first couple of screens where Apple collects information and moving onto where you can start setting up accounts, the thing just hangs with a blank screen with a grey horizontal line about two-thirds down prior to actually reaching this account setup stage. In spite of every other attempt, I just cannot past this stage. Truly weird.
Next, I upgraded my Firewire Disk from OS9 to OSX using the same installation disks and everything went swimmingly, including the creation of accounts. I have been able to boot normally from this Firewire disk and can see everything on my internal HD. I tried reinstalling the OS again - it still hangs in exactly the same set up stage - "siiigh". I'm now getting seriously ****** off with this process and have more or less decided to clone all the appropriate files from the internal HD, erase the drive and start all over again!
I really don't want to go to this level, and besides, I'm really curious to find out what on earth has gone wrong, and hope forum members can help me out here. I appreciate all responses..... Thanks

Seems the HD is bad, but whether it could be fixed by Erasing and using the Zero Data Option, once... only time will tell.
IDE HDs don't last all that long... 4 year old ones make me hold my breath!
Thanks for your reply. If the internal drive is bad, why didn't it show up when I ran Disk Utility repair? I don't think I'll try to resurrect it now if that is a possibility.
I had thought of swapping the drive in the Firewire case into the iMac and vice-versa. I have to say that this G3 has now been replaced by a newish MacBook - chiefly to preserve using Tiger (with Classic support) for all the legacy items that my partner was using on the G3. My partner's 91 y.o. mother will be visiting from Perth (the other side of Oz from us) and loves using the Mac, so I now propose the following:
1. Retrieve critical files (if any left) from the G3 internal HD;
2. Swap the drive as above - mind you, I've never changed an HD in an iMac, but after 20 years of mucking around with all sorts of Macs, fancy my chances here - especially as I come from the READ THE MANUAL school of support.
3. Buy a new IDE HD for the Firewire case, load it up with troubleshooting apps. which would then give me a tool for looking after our other Macs.
Any other suggestions?

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard. I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host. But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning. I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen. If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

Finder not responding after Archive and install
I recently encountered my first problem ever with my mac(new in '05) This is the first mac I have owned; I have worked on G3's and G4's in the past. After reading through many message boards and support pages I don't believe my problem to be similar but different to previous posts.
My problem started off with an OS problem that I was able to diagnose in the "help" book I purchased when Leopard came out. It said I should Archive and Install to remedy the problem and keep my files. I ran the archive the install (it gave me no options to preserve user or network settings). After Archive and install my computer started up alright, but I got the permanent beachball and the finder does not work. it is constantly non responsive. I can relaunch finder, but after it restarts it goes non responsive immediately once again. So I can't actually access my "previous system" folder to move anything over. I checked my dock items and finder, they opened, but my itunes asked for an update. I list of update items came up; I did the non-restart items first. they updated fine, (my itunes old itunes playlists are viewable but not playable now) then I did the items that required a restart. That is when I found out that I could not shut down or restart my computer with std. procedures.
Currently I can only access my spotlight or apple pull down menu if I am in a functioning dock program (safari or itunes, quicktime. etc.) after reading some more support pages it looked like the common thing to do was check permissions and verify disk. I did, I repaired two permissions and the disk was OK. I did look at the HD files, they were as I remembered, but unaccessible (greyed out) and the "previous system" folder was present. +It didn't look like I would expect. The HD looked same as it used to just with a previous system folder.+ After checking the permissions and verified the disk I tried a hard restart. It came back the same as before, unresponsive finder and only the few dock items worked along with spotlight. I checked permissions and disk verify again and everything was OK.
Sorry to be long winded I am trying to be thorough...In short, My finder does not work after doing an Archive and Install to fix my original problem (which has been fixed)...the remedy for an unresponsive finder is to do an archive and install. Is another archive and install really going to fix my problem? Can I archive and install OSX 10.4 and work my way back up to 10.5.6?
Secondly is there a way to restart my computer without doing another hard restart? It won't let me add a new account. I am locked out and when I try to unlock it gives me the beachball and becomes non responsive after it tries to authenticate.
I looked at the log file, I am not sure what exactly to look for. I am no programer. I see an awful lot of negative wording. I see some errors like "error (-4956) locating menu extra but they are mostly under system preferences...I see some stuff in the loginwindow that says is not a full path... Otherwise, the only reference I see to the finder is when I have force quit the finder.

Where is mail stored after archive and install?
Hello All,
I need to know where my old mails are stored after archive and install. To give a bit of background... This is a work computer. Its a MacMini which came with 10.4 installed. Before I joined the company boss upgraded to Leopard and thats what I have been using all this time. Recently it blue screened and I had to do an archive and install after trying various other options.
I only had the original install discs with 10.4 in them and not the Leopard discs. Since I needed to my computer up and running, I used those discs and did an archive and install.
I have all my old documents, etc but I couldn't open mail from the previous systems folder because its a different OS.
Is it possible to retrieve my old emails without having to install Leopard again?
Any help is appreciated. When I started the computer up, instead of the login page with the account names coming up, there was just a blue screen. There are lots of articles that gave suggestions to try but nothing worked so I had to archive and install.

Recover mail after archive and install
Hey there good mac people,
I recently archived and installed on my ibook g4. It was successful, my problem is that I forgot to backup all the mail I had in my osx mail app.
The previous system folder (library<mail<mail accounts<com.mac.mailaccounts<English.lproj< file, but I don't know if this will help restore or not?
Some of the mail is still on the server, but it is set to delete from the server once a week, and thus only a weeks worth at best is still on the server.
Does anybody have any suggestions?
In the future, what's the best way to back up mail?Hello art-is-work.
I don't understand your problem. Archive and Install should have preserved all your data, unless you told it to do otherwise. Did you?
Mail stores most preferences and all account settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. Everything else, including all your messages and mailboxes, is stored within the ~/Library/Mail/ folder.
If the problem is that you told the installer to not Preserve Users and Network Settings, then Archive and Install should still have saved a copy of your entire home folder in /Previous Systems/Previous System N/Users/, where N is a number. The old Mail folder and preferences file should be there. You can just copy them to the appropriate location of your current home folder, or follow the somewhat convoluted procedure described in the following article to safely restore them:

Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. -
Cd inserted but unrecognized after "archive and install"
After "archive and install" OS X.2 and clicking on "save settings", everything works fine, except sound cds are not recognized when inserted. iTunes works fine with the original files on hard disk, but doesnt see the cd (it did before).
I repaired permissions. I deleted the "previous systems" folder. still nothing.
I did notice that the "previous systems" folder has an "audio" file in it but the current "system" folder doesnt. I tried copying this audio file into the current "system" folder but I get the notice that it cant be changed.
I need to hear cds on this computer. Any ideas?
(It isnt a speaker problem as the itunes files play fine).

Open System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.
Adjust the appropriate setting there, and see if it
helps.
Good Luck!

Thanks, ali, but I did that early on. Didnt put it in the post. On insertion of a CD I have it set to open iTUnes.
I found a further problem which is that the midi set-up no longer locates my external keyboard. I will check the discussions under audio for this one, however. (I did check about the CD problem in the audio discussion but nothing there.)

Apps crashing, boot slow, want to wipe and clean install
Is there a good way to find what needs to be preserved in order to wipe and clean install? I tried Archive and Install, and though it helped, I'm still having issues with scanner software:

After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files. Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually. -
After performing a clean install on a stock apple 1TB fusion Hard Drive it appears as things got reversed and showing my startup as not using the SSD portion. The SSD portion of the fusion drive used to be on top in disk utility, now its on the bottom. It also appears that I have to many partitions. Im thinking i need to reformat my Hard Drive again. I can't seem to find any answers.

Time Machine and clean install
I made a clean install (Erase HDD -> Install Mac OS X) to my MacBook Pro. All previous attempts to clean my computer from all the junk I had installed on my computer during my studies failed so I decided to make a fresh start.
I did not use migration assistant after install because I didn't want to get all the preferences from the previous install. What I did, I browsed spesific folder with Time Machine's "Browse other Time Machine Disks" -function.
The questions are, what happens to my old Time Machine sparsebundle-file if I start backing up again? Will it just add new backup after previous (before clean install) backup, will it destroy all previous backups or will it create new sparsebundle? Is it even possible to continue backups to the same backup-database?Just to make sure I don't lose my previous backups. I have enough space for new backup, so is it possible just to move old sparsebundle-file to a folder so that Time Machine can make new sparsebundle on the root of Time Capsule?

Hi Guys,
I'm attempting to reinstall OSX on a Macpro - 10.4.10 using the Erase and Clean Install. All goes well with the first installation disc and all is going well with the second disc until it gets to garageband where it freezes and then stops installing and says that I need to try and reinstall again - I''ve tried three times now - is there something I am doing wrong or need to do differently to bypass this problem.
ThanksFirst off, there is no such thing as an erase and clean install option. These are these Mac OS X installation options:

So what are you doing according to the actual installer?
