What to do after MacPro hangs

Hi,
I'm getting frequent (1 per week) hangs on my MacPro 2.8GHz Octo. This has just started happening in the last month, previously the machine has been perfect - superb even. It's got an 8800 with 10Gb RAM, always update the OS (currently 10.5.4). What happens is the screen just freezes, and the keyboard and mouse don't appear to repond.
My question is what do I do in order to work out what's happening and try and solve the problem?
To date I have tried plugging in different keyboards (no result), ssh'ing in from another machine - I can do this but I don't really know what to do via top to see what the issue is, other than it looks OK (84% idle). However if I issue reboot or shutdown -h now I get 'shutdown: WARNING: couldn't lock kext manager for reboot: (ipc/send) invalid destination port' - see below from dump of ssh issued shutdown command:
Shutdown NOW!
* FINAL System shutdown message from [email protected] *
System going down IMMEDIATELY
shutdown: WARNING: couldn't lock kext manager for reboot: (ipc/send) invalid destination port
System shutdown time has arrived
... and nothing happens.
The only thing I can do is hold the power button on the front until it reboots. I've run disk utility on reboot but it never finds any issues.

When it freezes, you need to boot from some other drive, emergency partition only need be 20GB.
I delete the cache folders (not in home though) as well as extensions.mkext. Turn off journaling, run Disk Warrior, and when "Okay" do a Safe Boot.
But you also want a bootable backup clone probably along with possibly TimeMachine.
Don't rely on Disk Utility Verify from same drive, or did you boot from another drive to run? my experience is DU not finding IS a problem, it doesn't do as good a job, and hasn't but Alosft and MicroMat out of business. And you can't ask it to scan for weak or bad sectors and try to map out. You also don't get the power of Windows's sfc /scannow (system file checker) that can find corrupt and damaged files.
And that is just to deal with side effects.
The cause is as you tried, often USB cables and devices, 'noise' or something.
Use SuperDuper to clone your drive. See how that works. Or do a fresh install and then later import your home account, or create a new test account to rule out any problem there.
This just has to be the week - I am seeing a couple similar reports every day.

In the early days of digital video editing, an export render could take hours! Not many applications are as hard on system resources as video editing, and rendering the final edit is probably the most system intense action of all.

How to I undo what was done after clicking on a link from a spammed email?

I am usually Never one to click on any suspicious emails, let alone links within the emails, but I recieved an email from my Uncle that looked slightly suspicious, but I let myself click on the link within it. It turned out to be a spammed email with a BS link from "msnbc" reharding jobs. What happened when I clicked that spammed link, and what can I do to undo what was done? I am terrified that I unintentionally installed something on my Mac Air through clicking on this link. What do I need to do to erase what was do, and how to I find out what was done? Thank you very much for your help. I greatly appreciate any advice.

Without knowing what webpage the link opened and what you did after you opened it, it is impossible to be 100% certain of anything that may have resulted from that. An email itself cannot install anything. If the webpage did not result in any unusual activity, and you did not deliberately install or supply any personal information then you have no cause for concern.
"Unusual activity" would include symptoms such as a webpage you cannot close or navigate away from, and that would be a mere nuisance that is easily solved. If Safari or the browser you used is behaving normally then rest easy.
Most of these spam emails do nothing but bombard you with ads or attempt to install a browser "toolbar" that does the same. Malicious emails include phishing scams and most of them are laughable (but they are getting better). Others carry Windows malware that cannot affect your Mac.
To edit your profile click on your name at the top of this page (where it says Welcome, saratee14), scroll down to the heading My Products, click edit, and on the page that follows select your version of OS X from the dropdown menu. The only reason I questioned this was to confirm you have been updating OS X.

I get the message "quicktime is not installed on this system some components will not work correctly" whenever I startup After Effects. It is true that I do not have QuickTime installed on this system, but I do have several questions. (This isn't any type of error, I just want to know what QuickTime does):

What to do after resetting the MBP SMC?

I have a MBP 2011 model. After having slow frame rates on games running on bootcamp, I decided to do the SMC reset as recommended by various forums and discussion threads, and the SMC was successfully reset, HOWEVER..
After restart..
- Battery icon has a "X" on it as teh battery is damaged.
- Keyboard back lights are not working.
- Sleep mode not entered with screen led off.
- Fans are always running at full speed.
- Windows does not start fully.
- Other people reported USBs don't recognize connected devices.
I know all these settings are managed by the SMC and that's why they're not working, so nothing is wrong with the hardware. I serched for these settings in OSX but couldn't find. And all discussions on the net are only talking about how to reset the SMC but not what to do after that.
How do I get these things back?

IOS 8.0.2 on iPhone 6 i get NO SERVICE after every hang-up

Hi,
iPhone 6, iOS 8.0.2, DFU restore without any restore from iCloud.
After i hang-up calls, phone switches to NO SERVICE for few seconds then gets on 4G again.
If i toggle 4G switch to OFF in Settings> Cellular this issue is not present anymore.
Tried in many locations, with different SIM cars from different operators.
Also i noticed that with phone in idle, it continously switches from 3G to 4G and back and battery is draining fast.
With 4G switch ON battery goes from 100% to 10% in 5-6 hours, with 4G switch OFF, in same amount of time, battery discharges only 20%.

It sounds like you have updated to iOS 8.0.2 but cannot connect to your cellular service. I would use the troubleshooting from the followng article, named:
If you see No Service in the status bar of your iPhone or iPad
Follow these steps, testing after each.
Tap Settings > Enable Airplane Mode, wait five seconds, then turn off airplane mode.
Restart your device.
Remove the SIM card. If the SIM card is damaged, worn, or bent, or if it's too big or small for the SIM tray, contact your carrier for a new one. Then reinsert the SIM card.
Check for a carrier-settings update: Connect to a Wi-Fi network, tap Settings > General > About, and install any available carrier-settings updates. If you can't connect to Wi-Fi, connect your device to a computer that has iTunes.
Update your iPhone to the latest version of iOS.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will reset all network settings, including Bluetooth pairing records, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN, and APN settings.
Contact your carrier to check for any network or account issues.
Restore your iPhone.

After failover from on-premis Hyper-V site to Azure, Protected item show "Commit" button.
"Commit" Jobs include "Prerequisite check" and "Commit".

In ASR Failover can be thought to be a 2 Phase Activity.
1) The Actual Failover where you bring up the VM in Azure using the latest recovery point available.
2) Committing the failover to that point.
Now the question in your mind will be why do we have these 2 Phases. The reason for this is as follows
Lets say you have configured your VM to have 24 recovery points with hourly App Consistent Snapshots. When you failover ASR automatically picks up the latest point in time that is available for failover (day 9:35 AM). Say you were not happy with that recovery
point because of some consistency issue in the application data, you can use the Change Recovery Point button(Gesture) in the ASR Portal to choose a different recovery point (say an app consistent snapshot from 9:00 AM that day) to perform the failover.
Once you are satisfied with the snapshot that is failed over in Azure you can hit the Commit Button. Once you hit the commit button you will not be able to change your Recovery Point.

My old drive was giving me the folder image with a question mark when pressing the option key during start up. I have snow leapord , disk warrior and drive genius disks available? What do intake after initial install? Do I need to format my new SSD? What steps do I take. Thank you for any help in advance.

Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
         with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
         After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
         a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
         button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
         After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
         size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
         partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
         and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
         (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
         with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
         Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
         username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
         Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
         install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
         Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
