What to do If a backup file is corrupt

Hi!
Recently I restored my iPad 2 to factory settings. Before I did that I updated it to iCloud. I went through the standared set-up process. But when restoring from an iCloud back up a message poped up saying that there's a problem with my data and that I should choose another backup. So I tried with all three backups but the message was still present. What can I do if a backup file is corrupt?

Please help!

  • What is the password for backup files

Just updated my iPhone & lost my contacts & calendar. It is requesting my backup file password; I don't recall setting one. Please help! Is there a way to obtain this?

If you didn't set the password, and it isn't possible to' override or bypass it (there wouldn't be much use in having one if it could), then have you got an Exchange email account on the iPhone ? If so then it's possible that the account administrator has set the password for you (e.g. to protect potentially sensitive work content) - in which case you could try contacting them.

  • DMG Backup file is corrupt - Urgent help!

    Hi all!
    I have a major problem.
My Macbook Pro's HD crashed few weeks ago.
Brought i to a repair centre. But before i did that i was able to create a dmg backup file.
Now i got my Macbook back and tried to open the DMG file.
The problem is that i get the message that it ain't possible to activate it.
I guess my DMG backup is corrupt but i don't believe that everything in it is corrupt.
It is a huge backup of 350 GB's.
I now have external drives for extra space to put it on.
Does anyone know how to open it, mount it, extract it, or another solution so i can get important files back?
Maybe bypass the scan or something?
I'm not so into terminal but if you guys know any command line's i can put into than i'll sure try!
I hope you guys can help me. I searched all kind of forums before i would post a request and i really need my data.
    Kind regards.

The command line program is hdiutil (see: man hdiutil)
    You can try:
         hdiutil mount -noverify -ignorebadchecksums [file.dmg]

  • I did a backup on my iphone 5s yesterday, now im trying to restore it and it says "backup file is corrupt or it is not compatible" Please HELP

i am using the latest version of itunes. and running ios7 on my iphone 5s.
    Thank you for the help

If iTunes is reporting the backup is corrupt, there isn't anything you can do about that, except to delete that backup and try to create a new one before you attempt your restore. If that is not possible, then you will have to set the phone up as new and re-sync your data.

  • InDesign file crashing and damaging file...even the backup file.

Of course in times of deadline but I have a lengthy 20 something page document that continually crashes and then gives me a damaged error but attempting to recover just crashes InDesign. I have tried recreating a couple times thinking maybe something corrupt in the doc but even the back up file is corrupt now! UGH! HELP!!!

Hard to tell what you mean by the backup file is corrupt.
It's possible that only the recovery data is bad, and if you empty the (hidden by default) InDesign Recovery folder you will be able to start ID without auto-recovery, then use File > Open... to navigate to and open the last saved version of the file.
If a backup file is also misbehaving it  may be that it already had a problem, or else there is something not specifically file-related that is the problem, a plugin conflict, or a bad font are two common errors. Without more information, though, it's impossible to say. What version of ID? Which OS? Do you have the latest patch installed for your version?
If yo are a Mac user you likely have a crash report associated with this. If so, post it on pastebin.com and give us a link to it here and we might be able to narrow things down.

  • Time Machine backup file corrupted and locked

This morning when I switch on my Mac there was a dialogue box telling me that my Time Machine backup file was corrupted and that Time Machine would have to create a new backup file.
I am backing up my Macs to a disk connected to my Airport Extreme. It's been working for months without any problems. Other than this morning. Time Machine buddy had the following message:
    +Starting standard backup+
+Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/MyBookHome+
    +Mounted network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/MyBookHome+
    +QUICKCHECK ONLY; FILESYSTEM DIRTY+
    +Runtime corruption detected on /Volumes/MyBookHome/iMac27.sparsebundle (fsck_hfs -q termination status: 3)+
+Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/MyBookHome+
    +Mounted network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/MyBookHome+
+Backup verification failed for image /Volumes/MyBookHome-2/iMac27.sparsebundle!+
+Moved previous backup image to /Volumes/MyBookHome-2/iMac27_2010-11-01-032949.sparsebundle+
    +Recovery backup declined by user.+
    +Backup canceled.+
    +Ejected Time Machine network volume.+
Has anybody seen something like this before?
I now have a locked and renamed sparsebundle on my disk and backups are not working anymore.

Yes you are right, I know it isn't supported - as so many other things but they work!
This one is notorious for working for a while, then . . . not.
In addition to the problems above I got a pop-up from Time Machine saying the backup file is broken and it needs to create a new one. I told it to go ahead and what happened is that it actually proceeded to DELETE the old backup file before creating a new one - there goes my several months of backup history!
Yes, just as it says in the message. See #C13 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
All I can say do now is connect my drive directly to my iMac and figure out a way how I can backup my other iMac and the MacBook I have. On the AE this just worked remotely.
    Yeah. Until it didn't.
Really not much options here to backup a home with 3 Macs!?!
Sure there is. Back the others up to the same drive, over your network, via sharing. See #22 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for details and setup instructions.

  • Corrupt iCal backup file?

I had some very important texts in my iCalender, before my MacBook pro plaptop crashed. I did however export a backup file of the calendar, but the backup file seems corrupt. It does not seem to have saved the content or it just isn't able to load the info to the iCalendar on my new Macbook. I REALLY need this very important information back!
Is there anybody here that I can send the backup file to, so you can check what the problem is?

p/s given the above problem, I used Target Disk mode and FireWire to transfer the .icbu file from one Mac to another, and the file size that was copied to the other Mac was roughly the same MB size, and updated iCal with no problem. Still curious about the problem of using the USB thumb drive though.

  • Torch 9800 - backup file corrupt

Hi everybody. My device is BB Torch 9800. Recently I installed the OS 6.0 bundle 2647 (v6.0.0.600, platform 6.6.0.223). After I finished to install the new firmware, the device made a reboot and turned on, but on the display appeared this message: "The backup file is corrupt. If possible, create another backup file and try again, or choose another restore option". In anycase, the device seems to go well, nothing is going wrong; but after each reboot (for example, if I install a new app), when the device turns on, the same message appears. What can I do to fix the backup file? How can I create another backup file? Which other restore option I have? Thank you for your help.

Delete your BBM app and try to reboot. If your issue is gone, download again BBM.
    Thanks.
    Hope that helps. Good luck!

  • Backup file corrupted

iPhone will not backup to PC nor to iCloud.  Error msg states that "backup file is corrupt or not compatible with thie iPhone.  Please delete the backup file, and try again."  When I look at backup files there seems to be only one, dated a month ago.

You can find your backup file here:
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
It seems that iTunes lists all of the ones that are in that folder.
I just lost my backup, too. More than a year's worth of settings. I can't find any way of "fixing" the corrupt backup. It seems that photos are gone forever, if they weren't imported into iPhoto, but I did find this software to recover notes, sms, and call logs:
    http://homepage.mac.com/vaughn/msync/#VER
The developer seems like kind of a passive aggressive borderline extortionist, but the software seems to work.

  • Corrupt backup files...

My iPhone when backed up from iTunes, says the backup file is corrupt. How can this be when I only backed it up the day before today?

Where is the old device. Create another backup if you can. If you cannot, you have no choice. That is why besides a backup, I have everything synced to supported applications and pictures are imported. I sync my phone every day, twice if necessary depending on the amount of changes. I teach computers, so I'm always in front of one. I could restore my phone as new right now and get all my content back less Messages, but I usually delete them after reading. I think I only have short message threads from about 3 people right now, and I will delete them in a little bit when I go to sync my phone for the night before going to bed.

Now when I try to syn my iPhone 5 with my computer I get an error that says the backup file is corrupted and I need to delete it and try again. How do I do this>

    It is under Edit/Preferences/Devices

Migration Assistant (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant) is the tool that you would use to restore backups from older Macs to another Mac.
Details are here:   http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html   The same info applies for Mavericks and Yosemite.   If you are saying that this is a "no go".....where are you getting stuck?  What error messages do you see?
