What to do if you spill liquid on your keyboard

After searching on Internet, I found many interesting answers. The one that I tried worked out for me. I found you can unclip each key one after another.
So if you spill juice or any liquid on your keyboard, This is what I recommend.
1- take the bateries out of your keyboard (unplug it if it is a wired keyboard) and put it upside down to let some liquid drop out of it.
2- Before it dries, firmly grip one key and pull it until you here a ''click''. (try to pull the top and not the bottom)
At the beginning, you will probably think you broke it but it should be all right. (to make sure you dont brake anything by taking the keys out, try it out first in the useless keys at the top of your keyboard.)
3- Take Q-tips and alchool to clean the interior of the keyboard. (you can try to RINCE IT BUT I NEVER TRIED AND IT MIGHT BRAKE YOUR KEYBOARD) if you ever try it, let a reply to tell me if it still worked after.
4- Once you consider the key and the part of the keyboard where it was is clean, snap the key back in. place it right side up and push until you hear a ''click''. If it doesnt work, make sure it is not upside down.
MAKE SURE YOU TAKE ONLY ONE KEY OUT AT THE TIME SO YOU DONT MIX THEM UP AND PUT THEM BACK IN THE WRONG WAY!!!
(you might notice the keys are still sticking a little once they dry but it will be better then nothing.)
I hope this advice helped you!     :)

The important lesson to learn from all of this, never leave food nor drink near computers.   Many computer labs won't let you in if you have either food or drink.

  • What to do when you spill water on your MacBook Air

Thisb morning I spilled 1-2 tablspoons of water on my laptop.  The sceren went black immediately. I dried off as much water as I could and placed it like a tent to try and get some of the water to spill out. It is now sitting in a tupperwear container almost completly submerged in dry rice and has been like that for a few hours. What should I do now? have I done enough?

With the Air splayed open, invert the unit, so that the water exits the same way it came in (keyboard face down).
Immediately take the Air into an Apple Store or Auth Service Center for diagnostic and repair.
It is hoped that any potential damage is limited to the keyboard, and not the Logic Board or any other components. Water contains minerals and minute contaminants which will tend to short any exposed electrical connections. The entire logic board is absolutely full of exposed connections, as is the keyboard.

  • I spilled liquid in my keyboard is it a matter of they just drying out or do I need to purchase a new one?

I spilled liquid onto my keyboard. Is it a matter of drying out or do I need to purchase another?

"Separate keyboard" is the good news ... MBP is a much more expensive fix.
If only water, maybe will work.  But I would go for a new one, for fear of the keyboard going wonky and sending bad messages to the CPU.  But that is just me.

  • What do you do when you spill water on your key board and some keys no longer work?

I spilt coffee on my key board I few hours ago and just wiped it off. It worked fine when I did that and then I left it for a few hours just on stand by. Now have come back to go on the laptop the key board doesn't work. Only a few of the keys work but because of that I cant get on the laptop because I cant enter my password. What do I do?

Hopefully you havent fryed your machine and I would suggest if your mac boots up ok try pluging a usb keyboard in or a wireless one to it and see if that gets you out of the fix.
I will need cleaning by a profesional though I would imagine
What i suspect has happened is the coffee has dried with the heat of the machine and is blocking the electrical conections through the keys
    Hope this helps

  • What to do when you want to restor your ipod but it says there is not enough space to do it ?

My problem is that i have 21go of the section "others" on my iPod 5. So, I went on internet to find what is the solution (or what to delete to get more space on my iPod), and I found that it was a problem to have more than 5go of "others", and that the only solution was to restor it. My second problem is that I can't even restor it because it says there is not enough space to do it. So, I deleted stuff and there is now 4.73go of free space. But it still says that there is not enough space to restor it !!!

No, it says that i don't have enough space on my iPod ;$ But it's ok now, I went on youtube to find a way to restore an iPod (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzyy4puapig). But thank you for trying to help me !!

  • What do you use to manage your clients and push software?

Going around from machine to machine is getting tiring. We have been evaluating different software distribution applications and have yet to find one that has done the job well. What product(s) do you use to manage your clients as far as drivers, applications,

The one's I've tried are: Dell Kace and ManageEngine Desktop Central 8.

  • Spilled liquid on top of mac book pro; usb/wifi problems.

So yesterday evening I spilled hot chocolate on the top of my mac book pro while it was sitting on my desk closed. I picked it up, unplugged everything from it and grabbed a towel so that I could try it off. I got most of it off and nothing got into the keyboard area underneath. But I did see some of it get into the side ports and mainly the first usb port. I just realized that now when I plug something into that usb port, the wifi and usb don't work! The second one is reliable and works fine, it charges and plays audio. That is basically all I use it for. But now I am limited to just one usb port, it could be alot worse. It is an annoyance though, especially since I bought this laptop literally a year ago. From what I understand Apple will only guarantee their product for one year and won't honor most customer accidents. So with an expired warranty by just days, I am left with a perfectly working computer -1 usb port. I know getting frustrurated wont solve anything and I've spent the last hour figuring out why the internet and mouse weren't working.
What are my options? Anyone else have this kind of problem? Is there something I can do to fix my computer?

Take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you. Liquid damage is not covered under Apple's standard 1 year warranty or Apple Care.
NOTE:  If you are out of warranty and purchased the computer with a credit card, discuss the warranty issue with the credit card company which you purchased the computer with.  They are the only ones who can at this point cover the computer after it goes out of warranty with the manufacturer (Apple).
If you have Homeowners insurance, place a claim with them.
How to remove and clean your Macbook Pro Keyboard
Cleaning Macbook keys after a spill

  • I spilled liquid on my macbook pro

Okay I need some serious help... I've never done anything like this before, and I want to act fast.
I spilled liquid on my macbook, quickly turned it upside down, and then mopped up the remaining liquid.  The screen and everything worked fine for about a half an hour.  I then shut the macbook and came back to it ~4 hours later.  The mouse moved, I could see everything, but when I tried clicking, it would only right click, and I therefore could not do anything on the computer.  Also, typing was very screwy... only a few keys worked, but I wasnt sure if this was because it was in a "right click mode" or something... I tried to shut it down, but the power key wasnt responding.  After trying another 8-10 times to shut it off, I finally succeeded.  Stupidly, I tried to turn it back on, but it didn't do anything.
I took a blow dryer on med heat to it for about 5 mins and have now covered the keys in white rice in an attempt to dry something out.  What else can I do?  I know I'm basically screwed, but are there any other tips you have for this?  Taking anything apart to help it dry?  And how would I do this?  Can the battery be removed? (I don't even know).  I feel so dumb that I let this happen.. please help!  Thanks!

    Spill Cleaning
Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery if it's a portable Mac.
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).

Spilled Liquid on Keyboard!!!!!!! NEED HELP
Posted: Jun 23, 2009 6:32 AM in response to: ovacs Reply Email
    Hi,
I spilled juice on my keyboard and at first it was just my left shift key that didnt work then the keyboard would only be in caps. Now it is acting really slow as well when I open and close things it looks like its sucking them away.
I took it into an apple retailer who said to keep it tipped upside down for a day and said he could replace the keyboard. Then I went to a Apple store (one on their site) who said they could open it up (for more of a cost) and see what was wrong.
Any advice would be great. Is it fine to just put it between books and keep the keyboard facing down. Blowdry?
    Thanks

Liquid spills are usually disastrous — more so when the spilled liquid is sugary and acidic like fruit juice. Your keyboard will certainly need to be replaced because the keys will become sticky as the liquid dries. Your warranty is now substantially or wholly invalid too, so not only will the spill repair not be covered, but subsequent problems you might encounter won't be covered either, at least not unless you pay Apple to go through the machine completely and replace every part that was affected by the spill. I'm not sure whether your warranty would then be reinstated or not. I hope it would. You should ask.
Simply letting the machine dry with sugary residues inside will be a mistake: Whenever the weather is humid, the sugar will draw moisture out of the air and get sticky again, and the acids in the juice residue will corrode any metal parts with which they are in contact. That's a recipe for a short-lived MBP.
    Read this article:

Tekserve is obviously interested in promoting its own services, but the article also contains a lot of good information about what must be done to clean and repair a spill-damaged Mac.

  • I bouhght my computer a week ago and I spilled a liquid on my keyboard , and i would like to know how much coast to repaid the damage , i didnt buy in the offical apple shop.

i bouhght my Macbook pro retina display 13 Inch i5  a week ago and I spilled a liquid on my keyboard , and i would like to know how much coast to repair the damage in apple store , i didnt buy in the offical apple shop. Some places are asking to pay 620 Pounds.

The only way you can get a valid estimate is by someone examining the MBP directly.  Since no one on these forums can see or examine your MBP, you will need to get this infomation from a qualified repair shop.  It seems that you already have secured one estimate.  You can also bring the MBP to an Apple store and have a genius bar examine it for FREE.
    Ciao.

Fluids and electronics do not mix.
You have caused some serious damage to parts of your computer, and likely voided the warranty until Apple completes a repair and re-certifies it.
Step one is to turn it off and do NOT (did I say do NOT yet?) turn it on again yourself.
Take it to an Apple store and be prepared for a large repair bill.
Sorry, but that is the truth.

  • Spilled liquid on MacBook Pro - won't start - any suggestions?

spilled liquid on MacBook Pro - won't start - any suggestions?

Thank you both for your responses! I watched a video on how to remove the hard drive - special tork(?) screwdriver and too many steps for me to feel confident about doing it myself, so I took the computer to an Apple Store - and thank God, the hard drive appeared undamaged - they are transferring the data to a new Macbook Pro. The loss of data was the scariest part, so I am breathing again!
The laptop was three years old, I was hoping for another year or so before upgrading, but such is life. I appreciate your upfront advice.

  • What to do if you dont have an apple store near you for repairs.

Just curious as to what apple will do if you dont have an apple store near you and you have a defective device. My nearest apple store is 300 miles each way and after reading about some of the defects people have been seeing such as screens being scratched easily, loose screens, software problems etc.
Verizon is backordered so im sure they wouldnt be of any help.
So whats apples procedures for people not near an apple store to make an appointment.

If you contact Apple Support, they can also ship you a replacement, if your device is eligible for service or Out-of Warranty repair.
Check this article about it: Apple - Support - Service Answer Center
    Choosing a service option
You can request repair service from your carrier (except AT&T and Virgin Mobile), directly from Apple, or from a local Apple Authorized Service Provider. If you get service through Apple, you can mail us your iPhone or make an appointment with a Genius at an Apple Retail Store.
    About repair service
When you send your iPhone to Apple, we’ll examine it to confirm it’s eligible for the service you requested. If your iPhone is eligible, we’ll either repair your iPhone or replace it. The replacement will be new or equivalent to new in both performance and reliability. If we determine that your iPhone is eligible for a different service than the one you requested, we’ll contact you with more information.
    Out-of-warranty service
If your iPhone or the required service isn’t covered by Apple’s One Year Limited Warranty, AppleCare+, or AppleCare Protection Plan, you may still be able to get out-of-warranty service. For example, an iPhone damaged by liquids may be eligible for out-of-warranty service. Apple reserves the right to determine whether your device is eligible. See Apple’s Repair Terms and Conditions for complete details.
Read Apple’s Repair Terms and Conditions
    See out-of-warranty service pricing
Before you send your iPhone for service, back it up!
Your content is important, and you’ll need the backup to restore your iPhone after service. Apple will delete the content on your iPhone during the service process, regardless of whether you bring it to your carrier, take it to an Apple Retail Store, or mail it in.
