What to do when database hang

Hi all,
May I know what to do when database hangs after shutdown immediate command perform? Can I use kill process command to stop Oracle process?

Hello,
see documentation for details of immediate-clause:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/start.htm#sthref589
You can do an shutdown abort instead, but then sql is terminated. You can read details here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/start.htm#sthref595

    Hi
If you can mount the database it means that you have a control file.
What did you lose in the crash?
What errors do you get when you try to open the database?
    How did you restore?
    Are you running archivelog mode?

  • Shutting down database hangs

    Dear Gurus,
I m facing a database hang issue while performing the scheduled offline backup.I m able to take the online backup. When the backup starts , the database starts to shutdown. When checked in the log of backup it shows in tail as shutting down database. When checked for user trace , it shows message as "Attempting to kill pid xxxxxxx" and keeps on retrying for n no. of times. Then I have to manually kill the backup and restart the application. Then again try for an offline backup. This time it happens smoothly. This activity we did for couple of weeks .But now from past 3 days even after restarting the backup, it goes to hang mode.In other words unable to perform the backup activity.
The message had been raised to SAP from almost 15 days at very high. They every time ask the logs , and say that the data in log is nt providing much info for analysing the issue or cause of hang. Also enabled the traces of 10400 for trace level 1 ,10 some more traces also. But still the output is not helping even them to analyse the root cause.
Its my observation that this issue is occuring only on ABAP+JAVA systems(CRM &BIW)not in ECC.We are on oracle database 10.2.0.0.4 with latest patch set as suggested by SAP for the same issue.
    This issue is h

Twice a day the database hangs and does disconnects all the users from local and remote locations.

    Hi,
I have Oracle database 10g my database is hanging and i want to check what locks occur on which table how can i work on this database hanging process.Kindly help...because i am new for this i need good procedure to face this problem..

Locks on table are different. You can look on alertlog and start investigating..

  • Oracle 8i database hangs for the same amount during JDBC calls.

    Hi all,
I have a Oracle 8i database on solaris. The database hangs for exactly 61 seconds for a random jdbc call from my Java application, i mean there is no particular pattern or a JDBC call for which the database hangs. If i choose to wait for 61 seconds it returns the results from the database but if i try to access the database with another query(SQL Plus) the first query starts executing immediately. Is that a database configuration problem or some thing else.
And i also get some exceptions occasionally( Maximum Open Cursors exception). Are these two related?
    Any feedback is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Hugo Victor

    I have uninstalled Oracle 8i.
Removed all the services from Windows services by deleting corresponding registry entries and deleted the Oracle folder.
I have reinstalled Oracle 8i, this time i changed the name of global database to oracledb.
I channged the tnsnames.ora file from DevSuite appropriately as:
    # tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: C:\DevSuiteHome_1\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = mscserver)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = ORACLEDB)
Still it can't login using scott/tiger authentication.
What may be the problem? Please help.

  • What's lost when you reconfigure Enterprise Manager?

    Hi all,
    Going straight into the questions:
What's lost when you reconfigure a EM? And,
What's stored in the EM Repository?
Configuration: Windows 2003 Server Enterprise, Oracle 10g release 2
All of the EM consoles stopped working after we changed the host name on a Windows Server. The EMC services refuse to start.
It seems that using emca to reconfigure the EMs fixes the problem. But the other problem is that EMCA mentioned that all configuration would be lost.
I tried searching around the forum, Google and the official documentation but couldn't find much details.
It would be much appreciated if you could help me out a bit.
    Thanks,
    Benjamin

EM repository consists set of tables in a database containing state information for the managed environment and information about the management packs. It is used as a back-end store by the Oracle Management Servers, providing distributed control between clients and managed nodes.

Is something i am missing or there is some different steps.

Level 3  --> will collect HANGANALYZE OUTPUT + DUMPS ONLY THE PROCESSES THOUGH TO BE IN HANG.

  • What exactly happens when datafile is put in backup mode ?

    Dear Friend,
i want to know what exactly happens when a datafile is put in backup mode ?
that is what happens between Begin Backup ........................... end backup
    with regards.

When u start hot backup via 'alter tablespace begin backup', the tablespace headers are marked as such. The dirty data buffers that belong to the database files are written out to the files and the datafiles are check pointed. The headers are updated with SCN @ the time the backup commences. It is the data file headers that were not updated until the 'alter tablespace end backup' is issued.
The database files still continue to be read and updated. Recovery will commence from the scn written at the commencement of the backup and it is the changes written to the redo\archive logs during the backup that are rolled forward during recovery

  • What to do when updatemanager won't install ....

    Forum Moderator et al:
I periodically see instances where updatemanager will hang when it is starting the "Install phase".
In other words, after I check for patches, select the patches to be installed, and it has downloaded the patches. It will often simply sit there at the final "Analyzing system" or at the "Installing updates" section .... but not actual be installing anything.
When it works properly, prstat shows that it is running a series of "pkginstall" and "pkgadd" commands ... but when it hangs, these are not running.
While I trust that this means that something it needs is no longer running, I can't seem to figure out what it is missing and, more often than not, my only way to recover is to reboot. In fact, when I try to hit "Cancel", it seems to sit forever at the "Canceling ..." window but never actually closes down updatemanager. So, I do a "ps -ef | grep update" and kill the processes that it lists (/usr/bin/updatemanager, the java process running swupdate.jar, and two "smpatch update" processes and then I also "rm /var/sadm/spool/sunucLog/job_history.log.lck".). But that normally doesn't fix anything so I have to reboot to "restore" updatemanager functionality. That's not a very pleasant thing to have to do on a production machine and always makes me cringe as being the Windows way of solving problems.
Is there a list of things like processes that need to be running, lock files that either should or should not be present, etc. Ideally, it would be nice to be able to run a little script named something like "um_check" that could check for all of these things.
Note: I'm confident that I've got all applicable patches installed and I have three identical machines ... periodically, however, one of them will show this "updatemanager hang" behavior and which machine of the three may hang never seems predictable.
What should I be looking for? /var/adm/messages rarely shows anything. Is there another log file that I can be checking?
    Thanks,
    John

    Forum Moderator:
I just ran an experiment that, I think, provides some additional information. This morning, one of my machines thinks that it needs to install the following 4 patches (this is a Solaris 10u4 x86 system). They are:
127112-11 (kernel .... requiring immediate reboot)
119758-12 (Samba .... also requiring immediate reboot)
    124873-04 (Sun Studio 12 stuff ...)
    128345-01 (time.h)
If I select all 4 of these, it appears to download everything and then hangs at the "Installing ..." step. When I check the log that I generated with the debug flag, it appears to have determined that the order of the patches to be applied as: 128345-01, 119758-12, 124873-04, and 127112-11. And, as shown by the last few lines of the updatemanager debug file, it tried to start installing 128345-01 and just sat there.
    Status: STATUS DOWNLOAD_PATCHDB BEGIN
    Status: STATUS DOWNLOAD_DETECTORS BEGIN
Status: STATUS DOWNLOAD_DETECTORS END DOWNLOAD_DETECTORS.0 "Download of {0} was
    successful." "detectors"
Status: STATUS DOWNLOAD_PATCHDB END DOWNLOAD_PATCHDB.0 "Download of {0} was successful." "current"

    Status: STATUS PATCH_SEQUENCER BEGIN 119758-12
    Status: STATUS PATCH_SEQUENCER END 119758-12 PATCH_SEQUENCER.0 "Update {0} passed sequencer check." "119758-12"
    Status: STATUS PATCH_SEQUENCER BEGIN 124873-04
    Status: STATUS PATCH_SEQUENCER END 124873-04 PATCH_SEQUENCER.0 "Update {0} passed sequencer check." "124873-04"
    Status: STATUS PATCH_SEQUENCER BEGIN 127112-11
    Status: STATUS PATCH_SEQUENCER END 127112-11 PATCH_SEQUENCER.0 "Update {0} passed sequencer check." "127112-11"
Status: STATUS ANALYZE END ANALYZE.0 "Request to analyze the system was successful
    ul."
    Status: STATUS INSTALL BEGIN 128345-01
So, I killed the various update processes and did a 'rm /var/sadm/spool/sunucLog/job_history.log.lck
and started up updatemanger a second time with the debug flag.
This time I only selected on patch to be applied at a time .... but with no other changes.
Starting with 127112-11 (the Kernel) .... it tried to install it, realized that it was a "reboot immediate" and came back and reported that it would be installed at the next reboot and asked if I wanted to reboot now. I answered "No" and continued.
The next patch in the list was 119758-12 (Samba) and behaved the same way ... an immediate reboot patch that can only be installed at the next reboot and asked if I wanted to reboot now. I answered "No" and continued.
The next patch was 124873-04 (Some of the Sun Studio 12 debug tools, I think). Interestingly, this installed just fine. This seems to indicate that there is nothing intrinsically broken with my updatemanager setup and would also seem to indicate that the underling call to smpatch also succeeded.
Finally, I selected 128345-01 (time.h) from the list. As when I was trying to install all 4 patches simultaneously, this hung and the final line of the updatemanager debug log was:
    Status: STATUS INSTALL BEGIN 128345-01
where it tried to start installing this patch ..... but nothing appeared to happen.
So, this would seem to imply that there are certain patches that cause updatemanager to hang. While I don't have a clue as to what is different about 128345-01 (that hung up) as compared to 124873-04 that installed successfully during the same updatemanager session .... it sure seems that there is something that is patch-specific, don't you think?
Now, I can anticipate your next question: "Does 128345-01 install properly when run explicitly from the command line as: 'smpatch add -i 128345-01'?
The answer is "Yes", here is the result of that command:
    root@flare # smpatch add -i 128345-01
    add patch 128345-01
    Transition old-style patching.
Patch 128345-01 has been successfully installed.
So, while I'm still befuddled by this, here is what I think I have learned:
    1. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with my updatemanager setup.
    2. Certain patches seem to cause updatemanager to hang after it tries to install them and that patch will seem to hang where it is installed as a series of patches selected for install or if it is the only patch selected for installation in updatemanager.
    3. That same patch, however, can be successfully be installed by manually executing 'smpatch add -i <patch-id>'.
I hope that provides some useful information that will help to unravel this.
    Thanks,
    John

what is client side database & grid database..........and what is the difference between Dataguard and stand by database() these are interview questions.........i am dba learner pls explanin me.......

I'm not trying to be funny or mean, but, in my experience, if you don't know what a product/tool/component is, then you should say so. If you give the impression that you do know about a technology in your interview and you are hired based upon that premise, you might find yourself struggling mightily when your employer asks you to 'implement DataGuard by the end of the week'...
Just some advice. Good luck in your interview!

  • What will happen when redo log file or archive log file, which is yet to be

What will happen when redo log file or archive log file, which is yet to be read by logminer is corrupted? It seems that the captures process hangs between “Paused for flow control” and “Enqueuing Messages”. How to come out of this condition without recreating the captures process?
    Any clue is helpful
Thanks in advance for your help.

Basically you can't skip SCN since it will result in a data integrity issues (say you had skipped some inserts and later there will be some updates to a not replicated data).
Streams maintain their own checkpoint tables with transaction related stuff. So there is no way you can jump over a range of SCN's without recreating capture.
The only thing you can try - temporary give capture process a rule without any objects. But it will need to mine through the redo anyway.

    Hi,
The error is because either the primary database or the secondary database is configured as read only and the callback to create the secondary keys is null. A quick glance of the code, it appears as if you did not set up the secondary database correctly. In the Getting Started Guide for JAVA API chap 10, we have detailed information on what needs to be done as well as a code example. Please refer to http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/gsg/JAVA/index.html and look for Chap 10.
    regards,
