What to do when Firefox runs slowly and hangups. Running on two PCs -- Windows XP & Windows 8.

Firefox has been working great on both PCs until the last week or so. If it was just running poorly on the PC with Windows XP, I wouldn't be so concerned. But it's running just as poorly on a new laptop with Windows 8. It seems to hang up if I have more than 3 tabs open at once or if I click a link within a site, the new tab opening hangs up. Frustrating! Can anyone offer some advice?

my computer is running slowly and slowly and the sound of fan becomes louder and louder .I suspect my computer get infected by virus

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Don't do anything until you can restore and have repaired the disk drive.
Post should get moved to either ML (10.8,.4) or iMac forum
Swap out the hdd for an SSD : )
Don't do anything to clean it up unless you don't know how to first remove browser history from within the programs; low on disk space (I consider more than even the 15% minimum, more like 3--40%)
And do you have page outs? more than enough RAM? what actually leads you to ask? Programs aren't opening properly?
Sometimes it is easier to take the long road: just reinstall and restore.

Error -Your Computer Is Running Slowly and Affecting Audio Quality

Getting this error very frequent on Users Computer - I have made sure the Physical Memory and CPU usage is below 10 still we have the error for users .
Lync 2010 Client -Is there some logging that i can enable on Client side which will give me more insight as to what is the cause of error .

Does the issue happen only with external users or all of the users? Do you use VPN? Please provide us more environment configuration information.
Please make sure your computer’s device drivers are up-to-date.
You can try a different audio device to test the issue.

Have you unplugged from the power for 30 secs and retried?
If it constantly still does that it may have become corrupted and you'd need to restore via iTunes:

You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7-8 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7-8 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

Mac running slow and fan running at high speed

My mac is running slow and fan running at high speed & very loud. On MRI diagnostic it passes everything except this error "CPU Proximity: Can't Read ". I did low level configuration and still having issue with unit.

Firefox 3.6.3 runs slowly and hangs

Recently I started having an issue with Firefox running slowly. I upgraded to version 3.6.3 hoping this would fix the problem but it did not. I tried this suggestion from CNet - http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6136_102-0.html?threadID=242416, which seemed to help at first, but then I started having the problem again so I un-did everything suggested in the CNet link. Now in addition to Firefox running slowly (pages load slowly and it is also very slow to scroll up and down), I am having problems with it hanging when I try to move windows. For example, I play games on Pogo.com which open in a new window. When the window opens, if I click at the top of the window and try and move it to a different location on the screen, Firefox completely hangs. At first I thought maybe something was wrong with my Java, but Firefox also does this if I open Tools->Options and try to move that window. I read the "Firefox Hangs" article and the suggestions either didn't apply, or didn't work. I've disabled all my plugins and add-ons and that doesn't fix the problem. I know there is nothing wrong with my internet connection or my computer because everything works fine in Internet Explorer. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to have to go back to IE.

My Firefox hangs I am using windows 7 and the CPU meter runs rightup into the red when I open a page and it also hangs I also get other programmes not responding (mainly Adobe stuff) not sure if this is because these programmes connect to the web when you open them . if I cant fix this I may try I E 8 but have not used internet explorer for years so dont really want to change

I am running FF 18.0.2 on a Win7 system with an i7 CPU and 8GB RAM. My Flash plugin is newly-updated. I've used Firefox on this machine its entire life (3 years).
Since 3 or 4 (?) versions ago, I've been getting massive activity on my hard drive with Firefox. When I check with Win Task Manager, I see the plugin-container.exe *32 and the FlashPlayerPlugin_11_5_502_149.exe *32 processes are generating millions of I/O reads and writes, even while Firefox is idle (minimized, running no audio or video). On this latest version, 18.0.2, the drive activity stalls out YouTube videos repeatedly, even though I can see they're buffered ahead. The playing video will stop, audio will continue to end of buffer, and then EVERYTHING stops (Firefox not responding) for 30 seconds or so. It will then pickup again and play until it repeats the same pattern in a minute or so.
Example: I closed and restarted Firefox 2 days ago. Earlier today I checked Windows Task Manager and found the two processes EACH generated about 161 million reads and 141 million writes since then! My wife's laptop is showing nothing like a hundredth of that.
The constant drive activity is slowing down all programs outside of Firefox too, as you might imagine. The PC is acting like it's a dedicated machine for Flash.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.

To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
