What to do when my hard drive is failing

I have had my 160 GB ipod classic for 1 year and after unplugging it from my computer it said that it had no music on it. Then I plugged it back in and i got message 1439 saying that it was corrupt. After running some tests and attempting to restore it, i figured out that my hard drive was failing. How do you get it to work again, or do i have to replace it? Can i still save the ipod? and if i take it to the apple store will they fix it or charge me money?
On another note..i recieved this ipod as a christmas present on christmas day with a year long warranty. and it broke today which is christmas day a year later. could i still return it while on its warranty?

This seems to be a common issue for new Mac users - try emptying the Trash in Finder and in iPhoto if you use it a lot - and then look around in these discussions for similar questions. Here is a couple:
Start up disk is full. How do I remedy that?
how do i clean up my startup disk
Good luck...

Machine doesn't boot.  You experience strange crashes.  Gets wrong results.  Your harddrive is five or more years old.  Time to consider repacing it.   You do have backup?
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
         a) verify the disk
         b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile Wait awhile while you harddrive
          is being checked.

To verify & repair you file system on the startup drive, you will need to run disk utility from you installation DVD.
This article  will tell you how to get to disk utility.  Once in a disk utility, you can go and attempt to recover the disk.

Insert your  startup DVD  into your reader.  Power down your machine.  Hold down to the c key.  Power on your machine.  This will bootup your startup DVD.
This will bring you to a panel asking you for your language.  Pick your language.
You you come to the Install Mac OS panel.  Do not install.
Click on Utilities menu item.  This will give you a pulldown list of utilities.
    Click on the disk utility.
You are now in disk utility.  Pick your disk.  Click on repair it should be on the lower right of the panel.
Once the repair completes successfully, you should update your permissions.
    Verify a disk
As an alternative, you can verify that the filesystem on the disk is correct. You will not be able to repair the file system.
I suggest that you use disk utility to verify that your startup disk is OK.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
Start up disk utility.  On the left pane view, you will see a list of all your disks.
    Click on your startup disk.
Click on the First Aid  Tab.
    Click on verify.
Hopefully your disk will verify.  If not, you have to boot from your installation DVD and run Disk Utility from there to attempt to repair your file-system.

  • Does anyone know what actually breaks when a hard drive fails?

My macbook's hard drive has just died. It seems this is an all too common problem with macbooks and as everyone seems to go through the same sequence of events when the failure happens I just wondered what it is that actually goes wrong, and why. What is the ticking sound that I can now hear that wasn't there before? My Macbook sits on a cooling stand on my desk and hasn't been moved for weeks so why should it work one minute and die the next for no apparent reason? Could the heat that the current Apple Macbooks and MBP's generate be contributing to these failing hard drives? I have always felt that the high temperatures that the Macbooks work at can't be good for the internal parts, you would think that something would eventually fry or melt. If it is the heat that causes these failure then this is a serious issue as all the current Macbook line run very hot.

Apple uses the same drives as every other computer manufacturer. You mentioned that you upgraded to more RAM. That is one way to reduce the wear and tear on a hard drive. Unfortunately, as was mentioned, hard drives are remarkably complex devices. You have a platter spinning at 5400 or 7200 RPMs (that's 90 or 120 times a second ! ). You have a read head that is floating just a few air molecules above that super fast disk. Every year, hard drive manufacturers cram more and more data storage capability into less and less space. All things considered... hard drives are remarkably reliable. Unfortunately, as with all electronic devices (mechanical or solid state)... some are going to fail. There is simply no way around that with today's production technologies. The most important thing you can do is always keep a back up of your data on some form of external media.... be it a flash drive, CD/DVD, or an external hard drive. Hard drives are fairly inexpensive... and they are easy to replace in a MacBook. What is not so easy to replace (and in the case of business use... not so inexpensive) is your data. So long as you have your data backed up, a dead hard drive becomes nothing more than a minor inconvenience.

  • How do you know when your hard drive is failing

Having trouble turning on computer and computer freezing and getting a blue screen.  Videos freeze.  Do I need a new hard drive for my Imac  Hard drive has errors.

Boot your machine with the install disc that came with it, launch Disk Utility and repair the disk. If that passes, then boot your machine with the supplied Apple Hardware Test disc and run the extended tests, at least twice. If that passes, download and run Rember,

I thought my hard drive was failing and replaced it and migrated everything over but the problem still exists.
It felt as if maybe a virus was at work but I ran Sophos and found nothing.
I store images on my Drobo Raid system but when I work from my Macbook Pro I have no issues, just on the tower.
Any idea what is going on?

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

  • What are my options when Disc Utility says my hard drive is failing?

Before I upgraded to Tiger on my G4 (this morning), I ran Disk Utility, repair permissions. After the Tiger installation, I ran Disk Utility again and got the message that my hard drive is "failing" in red letters, something I have never seen before.
I started up with the Installer Disk and tried to run Disk repair from that, but the red remains and I am prevented from doing a repair.
    What are my options?
(I added this question to another thread, but got a little confused about the answered/not answered option when my message was not accepted as a "not answered." Anyway, John Huber1's response to my original question was helpful. I thought it was better to start a new thread.)

    Hey, guys.
I ran into a problem this morning that I've never ran into before and I wasn't sure where to write it but I thought this is best.
    Here it goes...
Last night I had a power surge and when I restarted my computer, my external hard drive did not mount on my desktop. I than proceeded with restarting my computer, I relinked all my connections and I cant seem to get it fixed. I have a lot of material on my external drive that I dont have backed up (I know, a stupid move) anyways, I dont want to lose that information. Also, when I open up disk utility, the icon for my external drive is there and the partition I made for my external drive shows up also but the title of my partition for my external hard drive is not in bolded font. I tried to click the button to mount my external drive cause the specs tell me that it is not mounted but when I press the mount button, it does nothing. I than tried clicking the unmount button and than restart my computer and still nothing.
What problem am I facing and how can it be fixed?
    Thanks.

  • How to backup data when hard drive is failing.

I think my hard drive is failing..
I booted using Install DVD, and got message in Disc Utility that "this drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired." It mentioned I should backup data and consult apple representative..
I clicked on Macintosh HD under the red physical drive (500.11 GB Hitachi HTS) and did disc repair.
Strangely, the message went away on the physical drive when I finished.  It turned back to black wording and gave green "verified/repaired" messages in the log.
I am still able to boot my macbook, although everything is running slowly... Desktop excel files take 15 mins to open.
Does this still sound like a failing hard drive?
I am trying to act fast and borrowed my sister's external harddrive/ "passport for mac", and it slowly prompted a time machine backup. It is slowly working through "8.34GB of 200.33GB"
I do not really understand what I am doing, but hoping this is the right move. Could someone explain what time machine will do or how it will help?
Is there any chance I will harm her external hd?
I am mostly worried about iPhoto and itunes library, iMovie projects, and important excel spreadsheets on my desktop. Is time machine looking after these concerns?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Where is you TM backup?
Where are your external data redundancies?
Now you will need to use very expensive data recovery experts to recover data when you could have had it safely on a $100 worth of 2 external HD.
Mechanical HD failure circumvents using recovery software.......so,  now you backed yourself into a corner and needed expensive data expert recovery.
You took a wrong turn a long while back before reaching this cliff edge.
that wrong term was not having (preferably 2) external HD as a redundant data archive.

  • Ipod makes weird sounds when the hard drive runs

my ipod video is making weird click clak sound when the hard drive starts running. Is this normal?? HAs this happen to anyone before?

HEY!!!!!! I wasnt alone. Amazing. I had the same experience with my new Black 30 Gig iPod 5 Gen. It had a 3 second delay, made lots of HD clicking noises. And worse after a few hours of usage, forgot 240 of my 270 songs that had been transferred onto it. This was all happening on the first day! Wow.
Im sure glad to hear I was not alone. The sad thing is, Amazon is going to take 4 weeks to return my money to me. I will never again by a hardware product from Amazon.com. It simply takes too long. As far as Apple iPods are concerned, I believe they need alot of design renovation to put it frankly. Here are my complaints about the 5 Gen:
    1. No Screen Brightness Controls. A major no no.
    2. 3 Second Gaps between songs. What?
    3. The trackpad on the iPod is far out of alignment. Not sure who supplied these, but the Mini was far superior to the 5 Gen trackpad. The traction was severly off kilter.
    4. 284$ for an iPod that forgets 240 songs in a blink of an eye? I don't think so Apple. Get a grip. Woz was correct when he stated you all use crapy supplies for your parts.
    I thought he was kidding?!
This was my first and by my choice, last iPod experience to be had with Apple. They are cute, but software/user level wise, they need alot of work.

  • What is a good external hard drive for use with a macbook air?

I am looking at purchasing a macbook air 13". What is a good external hard drive to use with it? Should I look for an external hard drive with its own a/c power or is the usb 3.0 capable of powering the external drive.

Have a look here for the sizes and prices.
It is however, much better to get a USB external drive that comes with it's own power adapter to avoid issues when or if your USB port can't supply enough power to your external drive.
That issue however does happen rarely but it does happen.  Especially when connecting other devices to your other USB port while your external hard drive is connected to your other usb port.

  • What is the best set hard drive set up on an iMac for video editing?

what is the best set hard drive set up on an iMac for video editing? i only have one internal 2tb hard drive.

    CIANCIO.mov wrote:
so is it best to edit directly off your LaCie fire wire drive, or off the internal HD and store on the external?
    The second.
Which one is faster to edit with?
The internal will operate  faster but editing uses both the Final Cut Application (on the internal), and the external which is used to store and access the video that you have shot and on which is stored the Capture Caches, and which also stores and accesses the various other caches such as Video Render, Waveform etc.
Does a faster hard drive decrease rendering time?
I think it must, but I have never timed it.
whats Faster, having another internal drive or a thunderbolt or firewire 800 external drive?
I think that a second internal drive would be faster than an external Firewire drive. However, a Thunderbolt drive is said to be very fast, but I do not know whether it would be faster than a conventional internal drive. This question would best be asked of the Final Cut Discussion Groups because thay might have experience.
i would love some specs, and input on different drive setups for an imac with a single 2TB Hard dirve.
Again, the discussion groups would be the best place to answer this.
    enyone. thanks,
Rendering long sections of video in the Final Cut software does take a long time, especially when it is imported from another source, such as a .mov, and when something simple like a transition is inserted or even moved or altered, or a filter is applied, rendering must be carried out in that area to see the effect properly. So you are on the right lines in thinking about how to speed it up.
